German company Paessler is probably best known for PRTG, its tool that helps you monitor your computers and network.  Until today, the company also used to sell a product called Web Stress Tool, which can simulate multi ple users from a single PC in order to help you discover how well your web site responds to heavy usage.

Now, though, the company has decided that it wants to focus its business efforts on PRTG, and has therefore made the web stress tool freeware.  The product used to start "from $250", according to Paessler's web site, so this move to freeware represents a bargain for anyone who runs a web site and wants to check that it works efficiently.

The program is a 6 MB download from http://www.paessler.com/tools/webstress and is malware-free according to VirusTotal and Web of Trust.  Simply install it on any Windows PC, set up the parameters for your desired test, and click the Start Test button.  Just be careful not to have it simulate thousands of users if you don't think your site is up to the job, and be cautious about directing its potential power at anyone else's site too!

HI, got a warning message from Comodo Internet Security, while trying to download the setup file of the webserver stress tool: CloudScanner.Trojan.gen@2@1....not being an expert in this field i did not dare to proceed (to ignore the warning). Is it save to download it and install? thanks for the support, Giorgio

Anything with "gen" in the detection title stands for generic. This is not a confirmed "hit" but applies to programs with features or behaviors indicative of known malicious threats. Most of these are false positives. This program is safe according to multiple scanners, including that of Comodo. :) MC - Site Manager. https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/bf6f013e6218fa0ea089bd6e1b96d2e36f145...

Thanks a lot. best wishes from Asunción Paraguay.

Confirming there are no toolbars & adware inside installation. Usage seems to be straight forward (mostly self-explanatory) and reports look very good.

Would recommend another utility for benchmarking website people usually are not aware of: ab (part of apache web server supporting programs).

ab is a tool for benchmarking your Apache Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server. It is designed to give you an impression of how your current Apache installation performs. This especially shows you how many requests per second your Apache installation is capable of serving.

Note: Thus program description refers to Apache web server, you can use it with any server lighttpd, IIS...
