How to Write a Hot Find Item

Hot finds are short one paragraph items that are of general interest to users of this site.

What qualifies as a hot find?

  • A recently discovered freeware program
  • An interesting tip or tutorial on another website
  • A shareware program at a bargain price
  • A free download-of-the-day type item
  • A tasty hardware bargain

Hot finds do NOT include plugs for commercial products, your blog or website.

How to create a hot find item

1. Login to this site

2. Select  "Create content" from the left sidebar

3. Select "Article"

4. Enter the name of your hot find item in the Title box.  Make the title descriptive and snappy so it catches people's attention. For example:

  • Three Ways to Kill Internet Explorer
  • Registry Mechanic Free for 1Day
  • 8GB USB Drive for $5
  • A Free Skype Plug-in That Alerts You When Somebody is Online

Capitalise important words in the heading and all words 4 letters or more.

5. From the Article type menu select "Hot Find."  It's near the bottom of the list. Don't select anything else.

6. In the Article text type a description of your item followed by the link.  Usually one paragraph is enough

7. If you are a Category Editor select Publishing Options and uncheck "In Moderation Queue".  Other users can skip this step.

8.Click Submit and you are done.  Hot Finds written by Category Editors will appear online immediately.  Tips subsmitted by other users will go online after moderator approval.

Alt-N is the authors of a great non-Microsoft Exchange server, called MDaemon. It works great, and is MUCH cheaper than Exchange. With the latest version 10 they now also have a free 5-user version available for very small businesses, or for home use. Great for testing purposes too.
