Best Free Portable Applications

Gizmo's Top Pick  Best of Gizmo's Freeware: The Portable Apps List

Introduction

This list provides a collection of portable apps from across Gizmo's Freeware and other sites. Portable freeware is an amazing development and is forcing software vendors to adjust their wasteful ways.

They reduce problems with uninstalling software (you just delete them and don't have to worry about failed installs or incomplete uninstalls), they allow for extra flexibility in copying or moving software to different locations on a portable device or on a PC, and they help improve your privacy and security by running from portable devices like flash drives.

Take your "computer setup" with you, keep every piece of free software that impresses you, or run them, say, at a library. I suggest starting a collection, or an army actually, of your favorite portable apps instead of trying to minimize the number of programs you install.

For an introduction to portable software, read the Guide to Portable Applications.

Installation Tips

Step 1: At each download site make sure to get the "portable" or "standalone" version. Most sites clearly label it as such. Usually it's a regular file name ending with EXE, ZIP, or PAF.EXE (usually, but not always, without words like "setup" in the download file name).

  • EXE files run "as is", or they self-extract after you double-click them.
  • ZIP files must be extracted first. Right-click the ZIP folder > "Extract All...".
  • If the downloaded file ends with PAF.EXE, just double-click it and install it to a folder of your choice (and if you copy over the previous version of a program it even deletes the older version first).
  • Other download formats usually have a special launcher (such as the downloads for LiberKey). But sometimes you choose portable as an option during installation (AIMP music player comes to mind).

Step 2: After you get the portable app functional, you must make a shortcut to it (or upload pure portable apps to an online backup site, such as Windows Live Skydrive).

  • Add a shortcut to a portable launcher or the portable launcher that comes with a suite of portable programs. Sometimes they do it automatically if you copy and paste the folder to its directory, but sometimes they do not and you have to make a new shortcut in the launcher.
  • Go to its folder or download location, right-click the main application for the portable app (usually it's the one with a recognizable icon and a large file size), and select "Create Shortcut" or "Send to > Desktop", and then drag the shortcut to the start menu. Or read How to Manually Create a Program Launcher for an interesting approach.

TruPortable: Portability + Stealth

We will start marking applications as "TruPortable" if they work as standalone apps and run without waste (few significant registry entries, few auto installation features, little need for user tweaking, etc.).

This excludes registry entries automatically created by windows. An application must work from a flash drive and run without problems on most computers. We also require no user involvement (to make an app portable). For this designation, we want apps to do their job and leave the rest of the computer alone!

As always, if you know of corrections or additions list them in the comments.

Best Portable Apps for Security & Privacy    (Back to Index)

1. Secure Internet Browsing: Portable Firefox (Home); + addons: a Password Manager (LastPass), Site Adviser (WOT), etc.

Description: Firefox is an excellent Internet browser to use for portable surfing, with many built-in security measures and addons. Additionally, you can run it from your flash drive so that most of your tracks will be stored on the flash drive and not on the computer you use. Note that some addons may not be portable. Creates crash files by default in the user AppData folder. In order to make it fully portable, see here.

PortableApps has an excellent and informative download site for their version of Portable Firefox (use the PortableApps Guide for installation tips). You can also get the Lupo Pen Firefox Plus version, the winPenPack X-Firefox version, or the Vidalia-Tor or xB Browser bundle for anonymous surfing.

Download Sites: PortableApps | Lupo PenSuite | winPenPack | Vidalia-Tor Bundle/xB Browser

2. Portable Anti Malware: ClamWin (Home | Download | Support); + online scanners for downloads and new files (Virustotal/Jotti)

Description: ClamWin is a popular choice for portable malware scanning; it makes the top spot here mainly for lack of competition from truly portable apps! In any case, it scans for both viruses and spyware. But it won't provide real time protection, and it doesn't have scheduling or program updating in the portable version. It allows you to update the database with the newest threats any time you want, but dialup users will have great difficulty getting them initially, if they are patient enough to get them at all (it took me a morning while surfing around doing other stuff!). Verified TruPortable.

Be sure to upload any newly downloaded or suspicious files to an online multi-scanner such as Virustotal or Jotti before copying them to your flash drive and use ClamWin for regular scanning. Additionally, I suggest periodic scanning with your regular antivirus and antispyware software when you can. Many of the best antivirus and antispyware scanners/removers must be installed.

3. Portable All-in-one PC Tune-up: Comodo System Cleaner (Home | Download | Support)

Description: Comodo System Cleaner continues to improve since the first time I saw it. Though I found its interface a bit sluggish on my system. It has three main cleaners (disk, privacy, registry). And it uses a two step "safe delete or registry protection" procedure to prevent you from deleting essential files or registry entries, including a built-in backup and restore tab and a restart of the computer. The second step requires you to restart the computer before finalizing its actions. In addition, it allows you to set a new restore point before cleaning for a third safety precaution. Why all the fuss? Well, automated cleaning is risky business, so also be sure to have a good backup of your files and a drive image.

"System Cleaner has a wide variety of file utilities, with encryption/decryption, a rename tool and calculation of checksums, to name a few. The registry cleaning is very aggressive, maybe too aggressive in my opinion. Other features include a minimal disk-space analysis feature, a detailed process manager, a startup manager, a rather basic tweaking utility and system information and benchmarking." Don't use the internal updater, it downloads its installer.

Product Review: PC Tune-up Utility

4. Portable Disk Defragmenter: Defraggler (Home | Download | Support)

Description: "A solid combination of performance, stability and usability from Piriform. With a very clean interface design based on the common Windows defrag interface, Defraggler is incredibly easy to use and offers all the options you need to keep your machine running smoothly – including the ability to defragment individual files and folders as well as an in-built defragmentation scheduler." Verified TruPortable.

Product Review: Disk De-fragmenters

Alternate Products: MyDefragGUI

5. File Cleaner: CCleaner Portable (Home | Download | Support)

Description: One of the essentials for a portable collection and getting closer and closer to an all-in-one utility. It hits several of our articles for different purposes and could compete for many more. "It's very effective in freeing up disk space by removing unused and temporary files, cookies, Recycle bin entries, history and cache files in many applications, and much more."

Plus it cleans the registry, manages the startup, uninstalls software, securely erases anything it deletes, wipes the free space and MFT, deletes old system restore points, manages cookies, or runs as a task with the /AUTO command argument. Verified TruPortable.

6. Portable Memory Optimizer: CleanMem (Download | Forum)

Description: Some people argue that memory optimizers aren't needed anymore. "But CleanMem seems to work and it helps you automatically recover memory and file cache space to improve performance. The program will install and run every 30 min via the windows task scheduler. It doesn't run in the background constantly."

Just extract the ZIP download file to a folder of your choice and click "schtasks.exe" for it to run automatically by the task scheduler, but don't use either of the BAT files since they aren't needed in the portable version and they install files to c:\windows\system32.

Product Review: Memory Optimizer

7. Secure Delete: Portable Eraser (Home | Download | Forum)

Description: It's easy to recover deleted files unless you routinely wipe the file data away. Eraser "overwrites the data area with your choice of random data patterns, and also wipes data in the recycling bin, unused disk space, and a number of other places where data can secretly lurk." Creates an INI file in C:\windows.

Many file cleaners include secure erasing such as CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller. But even if you securely delete files with something like CCleaner, I recommend regular free space wiping to increase the effectiveness of erasure (1 or a few passes are usually enough).

Product Review: Secure Erase Utilities

Alternate Products: EraserDrop Portable

8. Program Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller (Home | Download | FAQ)

Description: Revo uninstalls software and scans for any leftover remnants. It's "the only freeware product I know of that will make a decent job of cleaning up a failed install." Additionally, click "Tools" for its startup manager, list of windows tools, and junk files scanner. Don't miss the "Tracks Cleaner" right below the Junk Scanner for its several other cleaners (browser cleaner, Office cleaner, Windows cleaner, free space wiper, file shredder). Verified TruPortable.

9. Portable Startup Manager: Autoruns (Download or Run Online | Forum)

Description: If you have many unnecessary startup programs and tray icons hogging your RAM space and slowing your PC, then you can get many specialized startup managers beyond CCleaner and Revo above. For users who want to manage all possible startups, Autoruns is a gem. It allows you to manage auto start programs by simply unchecking them (so you can turn them back on if you really did need them), but you can also manage scheduled tasks, services, drivers, sidebar gadgets, and many other things. Writes settings to registry.

10. Portable File Manager: xplorer² lite (Home | Download)

Description: If you have had two or three windows Explorers open, then you might benefit from a feature rich file manager. xplorer² lite "is easy to use and learn, has a similar interface to Windows Explorer, and supports dual panes and folder tabs." Now, if I could just remember to use it! Verified TruPortable.

Product Review: File Manager

Alternate Products: FreeCommander Portable | XYplorer

11. Portable Backup Program & Folder Sync Utility: Toucan (Download | Support | Forum)

Description: Toucan has a simple interface for syncing and backing up. It allows you to easily keep the same files and folders on multiple locations. If you want to sync to a flash drive, just use its "mirror (update)" function to periodically add new programs and remove unwanted programs from the flash drive. Or use its backup tab to archive your folders and files to a backup location. The encryption and other components look much more complicated for some users. But it comes with a help manual if you need its advanced features.

"If you are looking for a light weight portable backup solution this little app has your number. It supports incremental and differential backups, zip or 7-zip compression, AES 256 bit encryption using ccrypt, and a simple restore feature." Verified TruPortable.

Another interesting approach is to backup portable apps or your essential archives to a secure online backup site. For example, Windows Live Skydrive allows 25 GB of space, or use DropBox if you don't need as much space and want to share files.

12. Portable Zip Utility: 7-Zip (Home | Download | Support)

Description: A much better app for archiving is the portable 7-Zip. It allows you to compress, encrypt, and set passwords for your backups. I found it easy to use. It was especially good for uncompressing files/folders in its file manager. "It's easy to install, gives meaningful error messages, and is capable of uncompressing from multiple embedded files. Even though it handles fewer archive types than some other programs, it's a fantastic program that will fill 99% of all your file archiving needs." Verified TruPortable.

Use Peazip or IZArc (etc.) below if you need additional formats.

Alternate Products: PeaZip (Verified TruPortable) | IZArc | Universal Extractor

13. Portable Data Recovery / File Un-delete Utility: Recuva (Home | Download | Support)

Description: Recuva is a "quick simple solution, copes well with the flash memory used in digital cameras, MP3 players, or USB drives". It recovers files from damaged or formatted drives, deleted emails (Outlook, Thunderbird Windows Live), and deleted iPod music. On its default settings, it has fast scans, but if you need to do a deep scan to find a deleted file, then it will take much longer. Make sure to recover files to a different drive to improve your chances of recovery. As a nice extra, it can erase most files it finds. Verified TruPortable.

Product Review: Data Recovery / File Un-delete Utility

Alternate Products: DataRecovery

14. Portable Encryption: TrueCrypt (Home | Download | FAQ | Forum)

Description: Encrypts your files to protect your personal information while in transit or in cases of stolen or lost computers or flash drives, or just to lock out prying eyes from your hidden or private files. "TrueCrypt is a seasoned, widely-used encryption program. Its open source status allows the all-important peer review of the source code required for a trustworthy encryption program." Limited function in portable version and writes settings to registry.

Other types of freeware also encrypt to some extent, such as file archive and folder sync programs.

15. Portable Windows Tweaker: Ultimate Windows Tweaker (Download | Support)

Description: Sometimes windows comes with more extras than you need or want, and sometimes its default applications have a mind of their own and represent a privacy or control threat to the user! You won't be able to completely get rid of Windows Media Player or Internet explorer with this tool, but it takes a good shot at them!

"UWT is a well equipped tweaker utility that supports Vista/Windows 7 (32/64 bit). Besides others it covers user account, security, performance and internet tweaking. The only thing that did not work on my 32Bit Vista Home Premium was the Network tweaking option. I received an error message and the page would not show. Still, UWT is a great tweaking utility worth a try." Copies files/folders to the system directory.

Product Review: Vista Tweaks

16. Software Update Monitor: FileHippo Update Checker (Download); + an online software inspector (Secunia OSI)

Description: Keeping software up-to-date is sometimes essential for security, especially with critical Windows updates and risky software (browsers, office document apps, media players, PDF viewers, Java/Flash player plugins, etc.). Secunia OSI is an excellent online app to run every once in awhile, but it requires the Java plugin. It searches for apps with security flaws, and it scans for Windows patches to make sure you haven't forgotten or ignored the sometimes annoying Windows update messages! But it's limited to risky and common software.

To check for newer versions of the rest of your software, you can use a general software update monitor to automatically search your PC for applications in need of updates. FileHippo's Update Checker is "easy to use and provides direct download links" from a very reliable site. You can also click on "Settings" and add custom search locations, such as for your portable app folders. But it only searches for the updates of apps listed on its download site, so it may not be enough on its own and may require supplemental manual update checking. Writes setting changes to registry.

Product Review: Software Update Monitor

17. Portable System Information Utility: SIW (Home | Download | FAQ)

Description: Windows has some built-in system information features in its control panel. But SIW is a much better option and it does even more than all the scattered Windows tools lurking in unseen places. It "displays detailed specs for motherboard, BIOS, CPU, devices, memory, video, disk drives, ports, printers, operating system, installed programs, processes, services, serial numbers (CD keys), users, open files, system uptime, network, network shares, as well as real-time monitors for CPU, memory, page file usage and network traffic. It also displays currently active network connections, passwords hidden behind asterisks, installed codecs, and more."

I did receive an antivirus warning for its Eureka password revealer, but that's a false positive if user initiated.  The network activity meter didn't work for me (probably my firewall is the culprit). And I much prefer to use the handy Process Explorer to view running processes and CPU/Memory activity. But the great thing about SIW is that it brings together all your system information into one portable app. Verified TruPortable.

18. Portable Screen Capture Utility: PicPick (Home | Download | Support)

Description: Again Windows comes with only very basic screen capture features. You can use the "Print Screen" button to copy the screen to the clipboard (or hit ALT at the same time to copy an active window to the clipboard), but PicPick has better flexibility and features, and many additional tools. It's "user friendly and suitable for most average users. A right click on the tray icon shows a context menu for capturing full screen, active window, window control, rectangular, fixed or freehand region. Supports auto-scroll, dual monitors, sound effect and multiple formats. An image editor is included, plus extra features such as a color picker, screen ruler, protractor, cross hair and whiteboard." Verified TruPortable.

Alternate Products: FastStone Capture (Verified TruPortable)

19. Portable Desktop Search: Everything Search Engine (Home | Download | FAQ)

Description: "It finds files on your hard drive faster than any product we’ve tested. Even on a terabyte sized drives containing hundreds of thousands of files your search results appear near instantaneously. That’s impressive in itself but there's more. Everything indexes your disks in seconds rather than hours. That means no more laborious background indexing that slows your computer to a crawl. Everything only searches filenames not the contents of files. However in this role it is a product without peer." Verified TruPortable.

20. Portable CD / DVD Burner: InfraRecorder (Home | Download | Support)

Description: InfraRecorder is a common choice for a simple burner (its the top pick at PortableApps.com & Lupo PenSuite for example), but ImgBurn is our "Top Pick" and can be made portable (see alternate products). InfraRecorder is portable out-of-box and therefore excellent for average users. It can create data discs, audio & video discs, write images for bootable discs, copy discs, read discs, and erase/format discs. The welcome screen is optional, but its built-in help didn't work for me.

"It works with all types of CDs and DVDs including dual layer discs. It even includes full command line support like CDBurnerXP. The interface is clean and simple without a lot of extras to make things confusing. InfraRecorder is a respectable burning program, but it has a few disadvantages as well. It does not support Blu-Ray discs or HD-DVDs. It also does not include many advanced options for tweaking the burn process to perfection like ImgBurn. Its interface isn’t as nice as that of BurnAware Free, and it doesn’t have any extra features like CDBurnerXP." Verified TruPortable.

Product Review: CD / DVD Burning Software

Alternate Products: CDBurnerXP (requires Microsoft .NET Framework) | ImgBurn (no portable download, see steps to make it portable) | DeepBurner (borderline portable)

21. Portable Media Player: The KM Player (KMP) (Home | Download | Support)

Description: Media players are good for playing your audio and video files and CDs/DVDs. The KM Player is "easy to use and install, has awesome playback, and plays most everything without need to download extra codec packs, making it easy to use for those with less experience. Other features include setting multifarious audio and video effects, slow down or increase playback speed with regular tone, etc."

First you need to click on the download file to have it self-extract to a folder of your choice. Then it requires a simple setting change in the interface to make it portable: use a right click on it anywhere > Options > Preferences > General > check "Store settings to KMPCfg.ini". See an alternative option here.

None of the media players run with stealth and variously write to the registry or user folder.

Product Review: Media Player

Alternate Products: Media Player Classic HomeCinema | VLC Media Player Portable

22. Portable MP3 Player / Music Player and Organizer: Jaangle (Home | Download | Forum); + a CD ripper/converter (BonKEnc)

Description: Sometimes media players are not enough for music lovers, and we have to search around for a suitable music player by trial and error. Jaangle has an intuitive and user-friendly interface for playing music, an excellent library for music managing, and very interesting download capabilities of artist photos/bios, song lyrics, etc. Download and extract the "files only" version. Writes to registry.

However, it doesn't rip or convert music files, but to do that try BonKEnc (Verified TruPortable), or the utilities that come with AIMP 2.

Alternate Products (Verified TruPortable): AIMP 2 | Foobar | XMPlay | 1by1

23. Portable MP3 Tag Editor: TagScanner (Home | Download)

Description: Once upon a time, I often resorted to Windows Media Player (WMP) mainly because it's rather good for the initial tasks of tagging and cover art finding. But TagScanner is even better and allows me to shut down WMP for good! It "supports basic and extended tags and is complete with Music Renamer and Tag Processor. You can preview tags and cover artwork from an online database before saving. However, it does not come with a normal windows menu. You may need to spend some time to get yourself familiarized with its user interface". Verified TruPortable.

Product Review: MP3 Tag Editor

24. Portable Video Editor: Avidemux (Home | Download | Wiki | Forum)

Description: The vendor describes Avidemux as a "free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks". It has many tutorials and guides at its Wiki to help with these tasks. It's "designed for multi-purpose video editing and processing, and can be used on almost all known operating systems and computer platforms. It's simple to use and supports many file types, including AVI, MPEG, MP4, and ASF". Writes settings to user folder.

It displays images very quickly, and these may be viewed full screen, as slideshows or as thumbnails. 27. Portable Office Suite: OpenOffice Portable (Home | Support)

Description: One of the greatest names in freeware is the OpenOffice software suite for productivity, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, powerpoint presentations, graphics, and a couple math apps. Merchants often advertise commercial counterparts to OpenOffice (mainly Microsoft Office) to customers buying a new PC, which come at a very expensive price. OpenOffice allows you to smirk back at them with confidence!

OpenOffice is free and open source, it does almost everything commercial suites do, and it saves/loads document formats compatible with Microsoft Office. You can get the PortableApps version or the winPenPack x-version. Verified TruPortable.

"It loads reasonably fast, prints PDFs, exports PDF documents to many formats (BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PNG), magnifies text, and extracts text and images. It also allows you to save and fill Adobe PDF forms." And the portable download is half the size of the regular installer. Verified TruPortable.

"It will ease you into accounting equations and help you keep tabs of your budget. You are allowed to easily create as many accounts as you need. The program has a reporting and graphing module to generate a full suite of standard and customizable reports, including balance sheet, profit & loss, portfolio valuation, etc. On the downside, it doesn't provide encryption of files, but you can rely on third party encryption software to keep files confidential and secured if necessary." EssentialPIM also has additional syncing and scheduling features: "It does many of the same things as Outlook and can import your Outlook data and/or Outlook Express contacts as well. There is no way to schedule repeating to-dos, but by creating an all day repeating "task" (which is essentially an appointment) you can effectively create a repeating to-do which begins before the day grid." Portable App Sites, Suites, & Launchers    (Back to Index)

Top Portable App Sites:

  • The Portable Freeware Collection: It's the only choice here without a program launcher and suite, but it's one of the very best places for portable apps and commentary. It rates programs on stealth and provides tips on making them portable if needed. You can also look at download stats, user comments, dependencies, and products in similar categories. The search engine returns portable apps and forum posts. And the forum is especially helpful. Once the programs are on your drive, you can use any of the portable apps launchers below.
  • Lupo PenSuite: Provides an impressive number of apps (see full list, use tabs at top). If I were to get a launcher and suite, it would probably be from Lupo. The details page for each app is very helpful, with ratings and related links. It also packages its own versions of portable apps (named "Plus" versions). It's a very good list and an excellent portable app site to explore.
  • PortableApps.com: It's the coolest looking site, with a professional looking launcher and a couple default suites of apps. It draws from hundreds of portable apps and then narrows them down to a select few, but I personally would only keep a few of those (4 of the 13). The forum and guides are very helpful, though. And the site is an important download source for its PAF versions of portable apps. It also has a longer list of applications.
  • LiberKey: It's rather good at choosing portable apps for its launcher. For example, I would keep the majority of it picks even in its basic suite (about 16 of 24). The suite pages have links to product websites for many of the apps. But the suites are not nearly as good as any above without a word processor or OpenOffice! (But, yes, you can add them later.)
  • winPenPack: Once you get past the awful look of the site and click the English translation, it has an excellent suite of apps. Like the other top portable app sites it creates some of its own versions of open source portable apps ("x" versions). It has the most default suites at 5 (see the comparison table). I was unfamiliar with many of its choices, so it may require more exploration and user testing than the suites above.

Here's what I have with me on the go:
OperaUSB

I have various OperaUSB folders, and I rename them depending on what area of my life it concerns, e.g. Photography, IT, Design, Personal Development.

In each different version of OperaUSB I go into userprefs and rename Opera to, for example OperaPersDev, then I change the skin.

This way (if that all makes sense) I have a range of Opera browsers that I can open depending on work to be done.

What I still haven't worked out is how to have shortcuts for each of them. I did have them set up with PStart, so when I inserted my usb stick I only had to open the PStart file and all my versions of Opera were to hand. This stopped working for some reason, so I'll have to rebuild it.

Also what I would like is to have the usb stick encrypted or a portion of it encrypted so my personal files are protected. Haven't figured out how to do that portable yet.

Hope my idea is of use to Gizmo fans!

Has anyone tried making Photoshop CS2 in portable version.....
can someone make/show to make PS CS2 as Portable,,,,,

My choice is following:

Browser: Opera Portable http://www.opera-usb.com/
Email client: Mozilla Thunderbird http://www.mozillamessaging.com/
Office: Open Office
XML editor: STDU XML Editor [Edit: Non-freeware]
RSS Reader: SE-RssTools http://www.se-soft.com/RssTools.aspx
Application launcher: SE-TrayMenu http://www.se-soft.com/TrayMenu.aspx
VirtualDub for video editing http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
Media player: GOM Player

Love seeing the GOM Player get some love. I used to use MPC before you started having to install it. I am such a fan of these types of programs. I don't know when or why it happened, but somewhere along the line I became phobic about installing anything I did not absolutely have to. Especially antivirus products, which, once on your system, sometimes just don't want to leave...

These lists are always so great to look at and check out. Your tips and instructions are also very much appreciated. There are always free gadgets but these are great. Thank you so much.

Thanks, I'm quite enjoying portable apps.

So do I, Rizar. That's why I like this post of yours very much.
Have you checked NFReader yet?

Is it this, a RSS reader? http://www.gaijin.at/en/dlnfreader.php

It has positive comments in the forums at Portable Freeware (PFC).

In fact I'm not sure I have a category for this yet. I'll have see about adding one when I get to the Internet area.

I see PortableApps has a Sage Extension for this category. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/rss/sage_extension

I've just noticed that SSuite have a portable version called SSuite Bladerunner
The site gives very little information on what it contains, but at 13.9Mb I can't think it's too much. Blurb says "A fully portable office suite".
I can't download in work, but might give it a test at home this week and post again...
For non-portable applications, they seem to be everything for everybody including a document manager, graphics, ripper, email, invoices, personal finance, PIM, Skype, Lan phone, envelope printer, etc. etc. Website is a bit confusing as regards a concise and comprehensive list of all these apps, but I'm wondering why I haven't heard posters rave about this if all their claims are true?
Download sizes are small, does not need Java, compatible with the usual major file formats

A very good review indeed. Although we can see that there is nothing about FreeFileSynch under Synch Utilities up there.
I found that FreeFileSynch as a quite simple yet powerful for a small portable application. Found it by accident when checking Codysafe updates.
Thank you for your review and information. Keep up the good work, mate ;)

Thanks, it looks pretty good.

Seems any of those lists is also lacking an emulator to run linux distros under windows: MobaLiveCD at http://mobalivecd.mobatek.net/

Wondering why Liberkey doesn't make the list of suites?
I have Liberkey installed on my hard-drive to do updates at the fastest speed, and let it sync with my USB stick everynow and then at the slower USB2.0 pace.
It's covered in the Best Free Software Suite section, so I won't go into it here, but I will mention that I find the tree-menu better than using the PortableApps one, although sometimes it can be hard to remember where to look for apps that do more than one task (Ifran viewer for instance also edits).
Best part for me is the simplicity of adding any other software to the menu.

By the way, you can store pure portable apps in Dropbox, and run them from any PC or sync with a USB drive anywhere in realtime. Incredible handy if you're on the move, and 2Gb is free to all!

Thanks, I added it. Does anyone know if its portable apps can be freely moved to another launcher? I can't try with the large download sizes.

LINUX MINT The Best and Easiest LINUX yet!
I fell in love with Ubuntu, but later found Linux Mint 7, waiting for the NEW version to come out version 8, Linux Mint is a remake, glorified Ubuntu Linux. Much easier and better improved version of the Ubuntu versions. EASY and works right 'out of the box' I installed Linux Mint 8 RC-1 onto a USB drive and using it 'persistantly - save changes' and using it right now. Awesome. I can carry it to my other laptops and boot into Linux Mint whenever... all changes are saved!! Ya gotta love it... I do.

Hello

May I suggest :
Portable email client : Koma-mail. Excellent email client and certainly lighter than Thunderbird.

Portable File Manager : Q-dir can provide until 4 panes + a treeview ... if your screen is big enough :)

Portable Music Player : XMPlay. Small audio player reading a lot of format (including tracker format XM,S3M,IT,MOD), skin-able and visual (as WinAmp).

Hi guys,
Portable Softwares are really convenient to everyone because of its characteristic (without installization). I prefer test new sw but sometimes it’s really hard and take many times to install them. But portable sw, I can do them easier . Oh, I know a web which contains many portable sws and i guess that it’s interested w/ you. You can download @ [link removed]

All these programs find LARGE numbers of 'junk' files, etc. that they suggest you delete. Once these files are deleted, there is no easy way to recover them. So, how safe would it be to let them delete all 'junk' files they find? Do any of these programs delete files that are actually not 'junk'? How do you identify files that must NOT be deleted??

I've recently tried portableapps http://portableapps.com/ which is a nicely designed portable software suite but found it lacking when it came to menu organisation and adding custom folders - until I found geek.menu, problem solved! - certainly worth checking out.
http://geek-menu.sourceforge.net/

Alternatively, another great choice would be PStart - a fantastic application for accessing your portable apps etc.
http://www.pegtop.net/start/

They're both so good, I'll probably end up using both!

It is a little difficult to add custom folders and programs to PortableApps.

But you can create a new folder under the PortableApps directory (with the other Portable Apps-specific programs) and extract the files to that folder.

I was able to attach all my portable programs to its launcher.

Except some programs have many executables, so in the interface you have to change the name of programs you don't want in the launcher interface to a dash or minus sign. You do a right-click on the item you don't want and it will allow you to change its name to "-". They say they will have better features to customize programs on the interface in the future.

PortableApps, I noticed, also has a built-in backup program too.

geek.menu lets you hide items that you don't want showing. This would same the trouble of the "-" sign.

Pretty nice stuff for anyone's USB stick...
Thanks...

Hi

I think:

2: DrWeb Cureit
3: A Squared USB
6: A Squared USB
7: Panda Anti-rootkit
9: XB Browser/OperaTor
11: XYPlorer free
18: Adblock Plus
26: Easy Cleaner or Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

8 is rather strange. If by HIPS you mean behavioural blocker, which I think you do, it makes no sense. Because the whole point of behavioural blockers are that it is constantly running analysing the behaviour of process. So even if you have a USB/removable hard drive permanently connected to your computer, it will still always use memory. So it would be the same as installing it. Unless your computer was so full that you cannot use an extra ~50 mbs. If so, you should probably buy a removable hard drive or a new computer.

I'm waiting for "The best free mobile software" (or the best free smartphoneware) section.
Magal

The thing is, there are already so many good sites that list good freeware for pda's and smartphones. 1src.com and pda247.com are two places that come to mind. With sites like these available, I think it would be a duplication of effort to list ALL the good software out there for them.

nice site dude

I used Opera USB but found that Opera Portable is much better and it incinerates your tracks on the host PC!

A few thoughts:

I'd put Irfanview in category 20 not 21 -- it can do some image tweaking and file conversion, but it's not really designed to be an editor, I'd have said.

Does ArsClip count as a clipboard replacement, or just a manager? It's working well for me, anyway, completely portably, and I'd suggest it for the relevant category.

Zip-managers: IZArc I'd not recommend. It's okay for normal stuff, but 7Zip (and 7Zip Portable) will handle things that choke IZArc, in my experience.

No category seems to fit another favourite of mine: TrueCrypt. Particularly useful to me is the fact I can cart an encrypted drive around with me and open it under Linux as well as Windows -- although, naturally, the Linux machine needs local installation.

It might be a PortableApps component (I haven't double-checked) but DosBox Portable works very well too. Okay, so it's more useful for carrying old games around than doing USEFUL things...

PStart is a better and more configurable portable menu app, so I use and recommend that.

I found SumatraPDF Portable at PortableApps.com and use it in preference to FoxIT -- it's more stripped down but really fast -- to the extent that I will even use it in preference to Acrobat on my own PCs.

A recent discovery is a freeform database, useful (to me!) as a portable knowledgebase. Neomem, at www.NeoMem.org. Free and can be run portably.

The WinPenPack's good -- mentioned elsewhere -- and comes in handy occasionally, but there's an awful lot there that's not very useful, and one day I'm just going to extract the useful bits and delete everything else...

There's a useful hex editor at http://www.mh-nexus.de called HXD, runs completely portably, occasionally a lifesaver...

Finally, two portable apps that are (in my view!) worth paying for: RoboForm and Directory Opus (www.gpsoft.com.au) The former, you all know about anyway. The latter... I don't think you can buy a plain portable licence for it, but you can add a portable licence to the desktop one. Sorry, but it makes all other file managers look a bit second-rate...

I think that this list would be found by more users if each of the category entries was changed to include the word "portable" in the label. For example, "Best Anti-Virus" would be shown as "Best Portable Anti-Virus."

I've done many Google searches over the years using expressions like: "anti-virus" best portable. Although "portable" does show up on this page, and should cause the page to be picked up, it will occur much further down in the results list than it would if the terms were written together in the label.

Google Desktop is portable? I'd like to know how to install it on a USB flash drive. Google says that by default it only installs on C:\Program Files or another drive if there is not enough space on C:. So how do you get this onto your flash drive??

Even I'd be interested to know that...

Here are a few others for consideration. I've used each of these except for DateDiff

Yamipod - A standalone iPod interface tool that let's you sync with Windows folders, extract songs from iPods, organize and rename/retag files, create/edit playlists or just use it as a standalone music player. Drag it to your iPod and run it directly from there. Play your music anywhere without iTunes (I used this feature after they disabled streaming music sites at work). Always backup your music files before using a tool like this. And it's better if you don't interface your iPod with iTunes before or after switching to Yamipod or other similar tools. It's still ok to use iTunes, just don't connect your iPod while it's running (in other words you should only use one tool for managing your iPod's internal library otherwise you'll have conflicts)

URL: http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/

PeaZip - Found this on PortableApps.com. It's a nice backup for those who are big fans of 7-Zip. When you run across the occasional RAR file you can use PeaZip. Of course PeaZip also supports 7-Zip and IZArc supports pretty much everything. So again, this one's good for 7-Zip fans who need occasional RAR support.

URL: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/index.html

Mess Rename - Another renamer tool. I particularly like how simple and clean the interface is on this one. When you just need quick and simple rename ability a tiny app like this can be helpful. Personally, I see no reason why this couldn't share space on your USB drive with something more robust like Lupas Rename.

URL: http://www.download.com/Mess-Rename/3000-2248_4-10648239.html?tag=dir&cd...

Clementime - It's a play on words. The app is simply a tiny (and readily available) stopwatch. Need to time something? Here you go. USB ready and completely free.

URL: http://www.kobayashi.com/clementime.html

DateDiff - I've got a similar app on my Palm Treo that every once in a while comes in extremely handy. Enter two dates and find out exactly how much time has passed or will pass between them. Seems like there's a tool for everything and here's the perfect example of that.

HOW TO RUN VIRUS SCAN AUTOMATICALLY
WHEN YOU PLUG YOUR KEY IN AT INTERNET CAFES

Hello there,

For what it's worth, this is what I am doing at the moment. Won't prevent virus to jump onto the drive but at least Antivir will catch it right then.

Place these two files in the root of your USB. (This only works if the host computer has Autoplay enabled)

File 1: AUTORUN.INF
[autorun]
label=(YOUR NAME HERE)
open=scan.bat
ACTION = Launch portable workspace

File 2: scan.bat.
pause "Press Key for Antivir ACTIVE PROCESSES"
start \PortableApps\Avira\AntiVir\avscan.exe /GUIMODE=1 /CFG="process.avp"
pause "Press Key for Antivir SYSTEM FOLDER"
start \PortableApps\Avira\AntiVir\avscan.exe /GUIMODE=1 /CFG="sysdir.avp"
pause "Press Key for Antivir USB DRIVES"
start \PortableApps\Avira\AntiVir\avscan.exe /GUIMODE=1 /CFG="rmdiscs.avp"
start \PortableApps\Avira\AntiVir\avcenter.exe

If you don't want to scan, just press Ctrl+C at the "Press Key" prompt
Also recommend launching Neo Safe Keys and Ultra Shredder

Would anyone has a better idea on how to prevent viruses from jumping onto USB drives at Internet cafes?
So far the best idea I've heard is to buy a flash drive with a Write-Protect switch, but these are rare at the moment on the 4GB-32GB drives.

It might be helpful for less experienced computer users to make a distinction between [portable] and [truly portable] software. There may already established terms I'm not aware of but I'm talking about the difference between "portable apps" that require installation to the USB drive versus those that are self-contained executables that you simply drag-n-drop to your USB drive (they run instantly as soon as you double click em). All are welcome of course but personally I'm more drawn to those in the second category.

Thanks for this comment, even if it's over a year old! I'm thinking about something similar. For example, we could restrict the list to "portable" apps, and then note which ones are truly portable (Verified TruPortable). It's probably impossible for an app to be perfectly portable, but it's a good idea to have this marker. Now where to put it?! Or maybe an icon would be better?

I've already found a couple that don't really qualify at all, at least based on the Portable Freeware Collection testing and some of my own:

Add Another One to the Butcher Bill! Just because it says "portable," doesn't make it so!
--Auslogics Defrag leaves too many registry entries (also rejected by PFC);
--Dr.Web Cureit! was rejected by the PFC website so I removed it for now;
--A-squared Emergency USB runs a service that gets left behind and must be manually disabled.
--Glary Utilities creates many registry entries, also noted at PFC forums.
--JLC Internet TV is borderline portable; it seems to require default directory paths for its dependent programs (WMP, VLC, etc.), which means you couldn't use it with a portable VLC in your favorite folder of choice.

IMO, probably those with some restrictions (or adding registry entries) needs a mention. Like Ubuntu Linux, it's portable, but when you run it from a LiveCD, it comes with some limitations.

By the way, feel free to make any other adjustments to the portable OS section since I know next to nothing about them and I won't be able to test them any time soon!

Thanks,

Another good example for limitations is TrueCrypt. I don't think it allows certain drive encryptions from portable mode. Not sure of any others. Maybe we could have a designation like limited function in portable version, or an icon for it with popup text.

I like the idea of mentioning ones that write to the registry, but I don't have a good list of the ones that do as of now! I'm sure there are more on the list. I need to re-test FileHippo's updater since I see registry entries for it, but maybe it created them after I changed some of its settings (it might just be a limited function app).

Readers will know to be suspicious of ones that aren't verified as TruPortable, though.

And then as we get to them or receive comments about the others, we can add warnings about the ones that fail at stealth, or zap them if they are excessive to the point that they lose users any benefit of being portable.

If an app installs a service or writes a bunch to the registry, it might as well be installed!

Auslogics Defrag, for example, has a whole page of registry entries. I haven't checked DR.Web (it has a large download size), so I relied on PFC instead. I believe A-squared still uses a service that I had forgotten about, which seems very unportable-like to me unless it would remove it before closing or something.

So far I haven't removed anything that makes one of the major portable app lists, I believe (PFC especially, PortableApps, Lupo, winPenPack).

This downgrades the performance of the top picks on the list, but it raises the street cred of their portability!

System Cleanup http://www.xs4all.nl/~franckey/franckey/ it does not need installing and cleans up all your drives

Don't know what category it should be in, but if you do any sort of website development, Firebug (firefox extension) is damn near indispensable

Restoration is a file recovery program. Download the zip file, unzip it, and put the unzipped folder on your jump drive or external HD. Then, just run the exe program. No installation needed. There is no help file, but it can restore files from one drive to another drive. I just used it to restore & copy to another drive about 60gb of media files my daughter managed to "delete." She says that everything seems to have been recovered. By the way, if one restores a folder it appears to also restore everything that is in that folder.
