Many thanks deya, I have read all the articles and checked Device Manager. There is a Microsoft audio driver listed, but not an IDT one. (FYI the audio is working fine and the LT is a HP Pavilion G6.)

The link within tomshardware only goes to a signin/signup page on the HP website. I have found an IDT audio driver on the site, but it is for Windows 7 (it dates back to 2012) and previous versions of Windows ie I can't find any audio driver for W10 CU.

I'm currently trying to get my MX-16 back to normality, so apologies in advance if I don't reply promptly!

Does the LT not have the HP Support Assistant installed? If it does you could run it and see if it offers driver updates? Just a thought. Both the machines here are HP, not brand new though, but maybe the age is the difference.

The bit in tomshardware ... "What I found further disturbing is that even while my notepad was under warranty HP never informed me that newer IDT Audio drivers were available and that HP did in fact have a newer Windows 10 driver available to freely download" ... suggests there is one.

The HP LT does have HP Support Assistant installed, but upon launching I have to close the app because it has 'encountered a serious problem'.

I did find a newer driver on the HP website (2015) which was supposed to be for W10; however, it failed to install.

I will keep trying to track down the very latest one: apparently HP are going to revamp the site later this month.

I got the Creators Update on 13th. The update came really early for me this time, which was quite a surprise, since last time, I had got the Anniversary Update really really late.

A day before the update, I had got a cumulative update to the previous version of Windows, and shortly after that, I had got a window about Update and Privacy settings, which by the way, is installed and can be seen in Programs and Features, and in Start menu too. It said that Creators Update will be downloaded soon, and the privacy settings were given to be reviewed. It also said that you will be informed when the Creators Update will be downloaded, so that you can backup your files.

This was a good move IMO.

But, next day, I noticed that the Creators Update was downloading, and I didn't get any notice whatsoever about it. It was fine though, because I had already backed up my files and folders the day before itself.

Anyways, the download and update went really smooth, without any problems at all, and Windows continues to run nicely.

As per the changes, I noticed quite a few new options in the Settings, with a new setting category for Games, for which I have no use at all.

I reviewed the Settings, and made changes wherever I felt like. As always, new apps have been installed for Windows, and I have yet to review and uninstall those. Will do so soon.

I just noticed that when I open File Explorer, I get a list of recently opened documents below the usual icons. I don't know if it was there before or not, but this is a good thing. Earlier, I had to put a shortcut for recent items on desktop for this purpose.

I also noticed that in "small icons view" in the explorer, there are now only two columns for files, whereas it was three earlier. It does look odd. Anyone else noticed this?

Another change that I noticed that when you right click on the Windows icon now, you won't find Control Panel, and Programs and Features there. Don't know how many of you have noticed it till now.

Programs and Features has been replaced with Apps and Features, which leads to the Apps options in the Settings.

This removal of Control Panel has been covered in Ghacks article today too:

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/04/17/ho...eators-update/

This is not a good change. It's inefficient, and a backward step. Why remove the Control Panel, and also Programs and Features?

Now, I have to go through extra clicks to get to these. .. bad change Microsoft!

Another thing I noticed...

I have a local account with no password. When the computer used to boot, there should appear a lock screen wallpaper, for a short time before the desktop appeared. But, the wallpaper only appeared whenever there was a Windows update download... the next day, the wallpaper wouldn't appear. But, after the Creators Update, the wallpaper appears everytime now. Don't know if this was happening for others too.

I use DLighter to control the brightness of my monitor, and it starts with Windows. It used to work fine until now. But, after the Creators Update, it starts with full brightness, and I have to decrease the brightness everytime. I will try to uninstall and reinstall and see if it fixes it. Minor annoyance, but it is an annoyance.

Apart from this, Windows is running quite good. I will post if I notice anymore changes.

Ha! .. you got it before me this time, Anupam. Good that you didn't have to wait so long this time

I've added the Control Panel shortcut to the start menu to save all the clicking around to get to it so I'm ok with it now. Agree though, they should have left it where it was - right click on Windows icon.

torres; Shame the Support Assistant wouldn't run, might have made life easier for you. Searching around I found a video on uTube 'Fix Control Panel Crash Windows 10' .... it might help. Five minutes long and looks easy enough to follow. Comments below suggest it works. It's here;

... maybe it'll be of use to you.

The short story: I downloaded the latest version of HPSA and it uninstalled the previous version before installing itself. I then ended up in a type of Safe Mode nightmare loop which for a time I couldn't escape from, with on screen commands telling me it was diagnosing the problem and then saying it couldn't fix the problem. Essentially, I couldn't get back to logging into Windows as restarting or even switching the LT off completely, failed to get me out of the aforementioned loop. I was eventually forced into running System Restore: thank goodness I had switched it back on as CU turns it off by default for some odd reason.

I have decided I can live without the CP for now as I cannot find the IDT driver on their website and the audio works fine on the LT.

Suffice to say, it's has been all very stressful and time consuming. :-(

However, many thanks for your suggestions and links deya.

Yes deya, it's good that I did not had to wait a long time this time. Last time, it was really a lot.

One thing I forgot to mention is that, for me, the most used recent apps list in start menu does not appear anymore. Even in Settings, that option under the Start is greyed out. Any idea why?

Anupam; In Settings, go to Privacy - General and enable 'Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results' .. Then go to Personalisation - Start and you should be able to set it to show most used apps.

I don't like the sound of that . I had turned that setting off in Privacy. Will it send data to Microsoft? This is stupid.

That's the thing - disabling certain settings in Privacy you find that you can't use certain other features I don't use the most used apps feature so I turned if off. I don't know of another way to enable it other than the one I described. And yes, I suppose it will send data to MS - that way they'll know which apps are popular and used a lot, and which are not. At least that's the way I see it, could be wrong though.

It's like disabling some of the telemetry. If something is wrong with our systems how will they know, and how will they be able to try fix the problems? I choose to disable it while many others leave it enabled, and through them doing that, sending feedback, I still get the benefit of the fixes via cumulative updates etc. We just have to set things the way we feel is right for us.
