Nice freebie for Youtube users

If you like to watch or listen to Youtube content in a desktop media player rather than in your browser, SMTube is an excellent bit of software, essentially being a standalone Youtube search engine.

It has to be installed as a plug in for SMPlayer (which can be portable if you prefer) but after that it can be run as a standalone program which allows you to add other media players to the "Open with..." menu.

Some welcome features are the "Open audio with..." option (useful if you just want to stream music or audio books etc), a selction of filters to narrow the search by content type, duration, quality and date etc, and the option to manually update the Youtube code, so that SMTube can keep up with the code changes there.

It also works nicely in conjunction with standalone Youtube downloaders.

Thanks. SMPlayer is also a popular app for Linux. SMTube runs fine on my system, but with this notice.

I got the same notice when I first ran the new version. You can also see it by clicking Help - About this release.

I just discovered that you change SMTube's default player by moving your favourite to the top of the "Open with ..." list, and I read on the website that you can also add downloaders to the list.

Everything works fine for me too, except for SMTube's internal browser, "Open link in this window". When I click that, it opens Youtube in SMTube but the video window is just black with no content or play controls. Does that part of it work for you MC?

That's undoubtedly saved me a frustrating session of wondering if it's just me and spending three hours trying to make it work.

Just to clarify, first you download the player and then the tube. I didn't realize they were separate until I opened the player.

another drawback is when you open the player and then youtube through the options menu, it opens a new window.
