Free Desktop To-Do List is Easy to Use
If you are like me and think deskop to-do programs have become way too complicated then you should check out this freebie. It has the important features you need to create basic to-do lists including timed reminders yet remains easy to use. And it looks pretty good - sort of like formatted Post-it notes on your desktop.
To-do Desklist also allows you enter task priorities and sort tasks by date due or priority. Best of all, tasks are visible on the desktop where you easily see them. For anyone like me who has very basic to-do list needs, it is near ideal. Those who want to set up complex hierarchical to-do lists will need to look elsewhere. Windows XP, Vista. 1.3MB

Lovin' the "tooltip"!
The BEST desktop to do list reminder is getscattrbrain - getscattrbrain.com - the simplest and fastest, it sits on your desktop and you just add a reminder/task in the box. It puts your stuff in any order you want. Just a click deletes each one as completed and type a new line for your next one. No clicking around - just appears on desktop right in front of your face so no forgetting.
FYI, the new To-Do DeskList 1.61 allows you to sync your to-do list between computers, and also to share your to-do lists with others.
Looks useful. I'm a big fan of having calendars and to do lists on the desktop. You wouldn't hide a paper calendar or to do list away inside a folder inside a draw, so why do that with a digital version?
I would look at Rainlendar also.. http://www.rainlendar.net/
it takes away half screen at small size setting too, not a good idea for space utilization
none of these seem to do recurring tasks. Also worth mentioning: coolendar.com
Also checkout the freeware Task List Guru - it is much better for handling larger number of tasks (eg. over 5), and supports notes and reminders as well:

If you dont care about due dates and would like to be able to add subtasks, then take a look at TodoPlus (http://todoplus.com), which is a freeware desktop task manager for both Windows and Mac. It is very easy to use. 5 cows from Tucows.

You do not have to look far elsewhere, you can look in their web site for Swift To-Do List Lite (free).
