Not sure about Nexus, I've tried it in the past but, just checking now, it doesn't seem to have been updated since Feb 2012. I went ahead and downloaded Nexus on a spare machine running in virtual, uploaded it to VirusTotal and it got flagged four times for Conduit toolbar. During the install you get offered the toolbar although you do get the option to opt out, which I did. Once installed it would only run if I right clicked on the Nexus icon and selected 'run as administrator'. I did that, it loaded, and then a screen appears asking you to fill in all your details and open a Nexus account. You can't use it until you've done that. So I left it at that and re-booted the machine to have rid of it. So just a word of caution about that.
There was a brief period a few years ago when Tapin also went down the toolbar route, an attempt to help fund the project. Lots of users were up in arms about it at the time so the developers discontinued the toolbar offer, this was in 2012. Instead they created a free or paid option, which still exists today. It's up to the user to decide which they prefer. I use the free version - totally free, no toolbars or anything of that nature. This is the version that's been reviewed here and which works perfectly well albeit with a few features disabled - scheduled recording, showing lyrics etc, which Jojo has pointed out in the review.
The beauty of TapinRadio is its simplicity, it's nothing too fancy but offers a huge selection of worldwide radio stations. It doesn't hog resources yet still offers lots of functionality.
A massive thank you to whoever it was who found this site. I have looked for something like this for ages none of them even came close to TapinRadio
thanks again great find
Going to check this out although I think a basic screen recorder would probably accomplish the main tasks here. I'm a fan of Tune-In online radio but if your looking for a stand alone option that can unobtrusively sit in the background while you browse websites, Nexus Radio is worth a look.
Hi tim,
thanks for this very intreresting paper!
And what about "Sophos UTM Essential Firewall", free for home users? Did you tested it? I'd be quite glad to have your opinion about it.
Best regards

DiskTune which was on the previous list (4.5 out of 5 starts, was in top 5 of freeware defraggers) is now back as DiskTuna at www.disktuna.com. Has been revived, the current version is where DiskTune left off, and is being further developed now.
I have been using LastPass for the past few years and have always been happy with this password manager. I have been quite busy recently, but eventually got around to install the app on my S6. Unfortunately, it is not free. As I live in South Africa, where our currency is basically plummeting whenever Pres Zuma opens his mouth, paying for an app on top of nearly a junk status economy, is currently not possible for me.
What is a another good app that would manage my passwords on both Android and Windows 10?
Try this Brad O, download and unzip the plugin to a folder, then go CLCL main window, select Tools > Tool Setup, click "Add", browse to the folder containing the plug-in, select the plugin, e.g. tool_text.dll, click "Open". A list of tools from the plugin will appear, select a tool you need, click Ok to confirm.
This tool will then be available from the Tools menu.
I used CLCL several years ago and was happy with it. I don't know why I switched to something else, probably a newer shinier model of clipboard manager! But I thought of switching back to CLCL now and I can't find any help file with it. I mainly was wondering how to "plug in" the plugins. I downloaded them but cannot find out how to put them to use.
Thanks so much; I would never have figured out how to disable without your instructions.
I just finished disabling it on three separate Windows 7 machines.
There is a ton of stuff on that list; I wonder just how much of it is junk that should be disabled.
Commspro, where did you get your information on the last update? If you click on the VT link Jojo provided you will see the last update was done on 26th June, 2016. I will be downloading this to all three of my androids. VT is a very good link/URL tester [red-rated product reference removed as per site rules]
Why not? "I wouldn't use..." implies you think there's something unsatisfactory about the app, and I'm probably not the only one that feels if you're going to make a comment like that, it's worth explaining why not and why "...can suggest this one..." is a better option.
At a glance it looks like the funnycat app is a front end to the virustotal app, developed in conjunction with VT. Is there any real difference in the two as far as detection of problems? If FC is a front-end to VT, won't the last update of VT be more significant, since the update to an access point doesn't really add any detection value, maybe just a better (or not?) user interface?
Either way, I'm going to try the fc version based on your recommendation, with the assumption that the detection quality won't be any less than VT, and with benefit-of-the-doubt, maybe it's better. I'd try them both, but I'm worn out from writing this and only have the mental energy for one.
No offense but I wouldn't use this app. Instead I can suggest this one, which is being developed in collaboration with VirusTotal : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funnycat.virustotal

I have tried installing Comodo Firewall on the different windows 10 computers, all different vendors and the install fails!
FATAL ERROR. at 99% of the install, but hey according to you its every thing else , why don't you go tell Misrosoft its them, or is it also not their issue, its some kind of mysterious alien presence in the ether that is the problem.?
I installed this program on windows 10 pro, and all I see is a blank space. I did the F9 like instructed, and that too is a blank space with nothing in it. Nothing that tells me about any network connections.
I think the "fastest" tag has to be given to UltraSearch now, and I love how it achieves its speed by using the MFT directly on the NTFS partitiions. Moreover the latest version has a load of changes, the major one being support for searching for file content.
Switched to UltraSearch from Everything, and am really happy with it. It comes in 32 & 64 bit flavours, is crapware free and portable too.
Yup, Nirsofer's Nirsoft has a tool for just about anything you might need or want for Windows.
@Rob, - After months of proper functioning, one of my laptops began having the same exact problem which (after much digging and troubleshooting) I only managed to fix by uninstalling my third-party Windows Firewall utility, (Binisoft's "Windows Firewall Control - WFC") and resetting Windows Firewall to defaults; uninstalling the WiFi adapter and *deleting* its driver; then, rebooting and reinstalling the adapter, followed by the firewall utility. So far, after about six hours, all remains well . ~;-)
My difficulties began while I was traveling and repeatedly switched back-and-forth between two ISP's (via tethering to my phone) without first shutting down the firewall; and perhaps, even rebooting for good measure. I know you know how to fix your problem but I hope sharing my experience is helpful.
Thanks for this info !! I am downloading the ISO file now.
The only 2 choices as far as language were French and Korean (no English) -- not sure why that is, but I chose French as I can at least muddle through that if need be.
I'd lost my disks so thanks for the headsup on this, there's a few comments earlier here saying an OEM is ineligible....unless something will go wrong at the end of my download which is a bit away yet, I am downloading a copy via my OEM key as I type this...the key was even recognised as an OEM key by the site but there was no trouble with commencing the download.......maybe it was blocked on the Digital River site and the updated link allows the download??.
Why would you put this back up when the download site no longer offers it. Also I believe most people have a windows 7 version that came preloaded on their pc and therefore is a OEM version and not eligible for this download. Microsoft is very stingy in not giving Win 7 to anyone wanting it.
Regarding several of the posts below - there is a very good new article here:
http://windowssecrets.com/best-practices/using-windows-powerful-recovery-environment/
One thing I didn't know is how to access Windows Recovery Environment in Windows 7. It is described here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/11028.how-to-access-windows-recovery-environment-in-windows-7.aspx
Quite useful!
I updated my Windows 7 to Windows 10 several months ago but would prefer to revert to Windows 7. Can I use my old Windows 7 product key if I download this Windows 7 installations disk?
Some might like EssentialPIM, not least because it can sync with the Windows version, and also with Google. It doesn't (that I know of) have the ability to link contacts or photos, though.
I'd like a wider review of checklist and shopping apps. The best I've seen is Handy Shopper for the Palm. You have a master list of everything you ever want to buy (or pack for travel, or put in your camera bag for a specific project); go through it to select the items you want right now, mark them; when complete, change view from "All" to "Need"; the marked ones then appear with checkboxes and everything else (i.e. not currently needed) disappears. Go shopping, check off each item as you put it in your basket. When all done, or as many as you could get, hit "Checkout" which resets everything, leaving those you wanted but couldn't get still with empty checkboxes. Superb app. A few in the Play Store claim to emulate it.
I'm still using Real Opera - from prior to the current Chrome-based abortion - and Vivaldi resembles it fairly well - except that its bookmark handling and implementation of Speed Dial are like the new Opera - which is to say, virtually useless.
Wow...this is weird. Comment I posted earlier today is...........gone.
And it wasn't even a slam; part was that I installed
To-Do Calendar Planner
and ended up with
isoTimer (having a completely different icon....
and could not get it to sync nohow/noway to my Google calendar.
I installed it and really like the GUI interface and ease of use--EXCEPT...
I was very interested in what you said, "I really was impressed at ... how the app synchronized with Google calendar by itself without me having to anything." Except nothing I do will get mine to sync with my Google calendar. I checked to be sure both are associated with the same account, but I cannot find a 'sync now' command in it, and it sure isn't doing it on its own. wifi is connected, cell data is on, ????
ADDED further observations...while installing, everything refers to To-Do Calendar Planner, and that is what I commanded to install. It does not appear in installed items...what shows up is isoTimer, with a completely different icon. I also found a screen that shows calendars to display
-My Calendar [checked]
-one named with "my gmail address (Google)" [not checked and not checkable]
-one named with "my gmail address" (no parens) [checked]
-US Holidays [checked]
I found Winaero being mentioned a bit on W10, W7 threads on Whirlpool Forum AU, recommended for some tweaks, It has been around for a few years and members have used it for a fair amount of time with no issues being raised.
I don't have it installed on my daily l/top at present so will run it on 2nd l/top to see if it has problems, nothing untoward happened after latest W10 update last night.
As you can see from the page title, this is a stub and not a review. It is therefore a work in progress and the reason why there are no product ratings or a working link to a Quick Selection Guide.
If you would like to help our volunteer editors with this page or any other please apply using the form here. MC - Site Manager.
Gents, you may use friendly windows recovering - may be someone find his lost files on hidden places in hard-drive. But, it was not me - I tried to recover my data by several times though all life, the last time was for years ago, but useless. So, I figured out that I need the Unerase program to deal with it - cause I didn't saw any other way out of my issue. And software from Hetman (https://hetmanrecovery.com/file_uneraser/hetman_uneraser.htm) solved my problem - I've found my lost photos 6 years ago. But, you must be sure, that you didn't record any other files on mentioned drive.
I started using Mylio as my primary photo organizer in late 2015. It lets me manage one library across all my devices, and I can make non-destructive edits to my pictures like I used to be able to do in Aperture. They have been adding new features monthly like face recognition and using events group pictures. I use this on my 19,000 picture library and have access to organize my photos on my iPhone, laptop and desktop. They just added the free version in March 2016.
I experienced slow page loads with Vivaldi in early versions, but with the latest versions (1.1 and 1.2) pages load as fast as the 4 different browsers I use on a daily basis. Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned or linked to it. YMMV. :)
Ron525,
I guess it's about time to wish you a Happy B-Day.
To answer your question: I have no clue. Quite some time ago I found Classic Shell's description, I believe on Sourceforge.
I liked what I read and tried it; have never looked back and just don't have enough time and energy to make any kind of comparison. Sorry.
my system is 64-bit Windows 7 as well and GPU Caps Viewer works perfectly, including the newest version. And I already ran it on other 64-bit machines without problems.
I don't know why you had problems, but if you liked it, try to report the error to the developers. By the way, nowadays my GPU is an AMD Radeon R7 260X and I am using the newest drivers.
I can't see a top recommendation here (or even a top three) - and my attempts to find one using "Quick Selection Guide" merely recycle this page. Also, the reason that most of us turn to Gizmo is to identify software which is free of viruses, bloatware, malware, PUP's, adware, ransomware and the rest of that swelling poison caboodle. It we want to spend a couple of hours having to scour our computer after every download, we can simply turn to CNET, Filehippo, Softonic and a dozen other sites.
What shame, then, to find software highlighted on this page, time and again, which is known to be riddled with hidden nasties. Please, fellow readers, carry out further checks before you choose any of these.
eikelein, how different is Classic Shell from Winaero on how it instigates changes and in your opinion do you think Winaero would have problems with updates?
How true Jojo Yee, I see that issue on my Xiaomi phone adding a lot of fancy mods(many could be called bloat) far out weighs true enhancements, simplifications and fixing bugs.
But I think some of the W10 changes create more actions to get to things as well, or I still have to adjust to a different OS.
Maybe change is not liked but when one is used to a product and it it works so easily and smooth you start to question why it has been altered.
"... quicksafe is a tiny Python script that provides a GUI text editor to edit notes that are then encrypted and stored within the script file itself. Thus notes encrypted with the system bring their own decryption and editing environment, capable of running anywhere Python/Tk can run, perfect for being archived, sent by mail or posted on the web ...": https://github.com/p-e-w/quicksafe
There is another issue related to this in that many folks still insist on using so called registry cleaners for reasons beyond my comprehension. These things are coded to see a system in a certain state and chuck out anything that doesn't match. In so doing they are quite capable of trashing Windows and often do. A tweaked system is even more likely to be "corrected" to produce a nice blank screen at next boot . :) MC - Site Manager.
I only use whatsApp because some of my adult children live half way around the world, I refuse to use Messenger which was the one prior to that that they preferred to use- phew!
However from the time I knew FB acquired WA Ive been using it less and less and wanting something totally unconnected with Google, FB et al.
The trouble isnt finding one so much as trying to get family who are quite happy with the convenience and so-called encription of WhatsApp that they show little to no interest in movinng on:/
People just get lazy about actively pursuing 'safer' ( hopefully!), alternatives even though they often complain about the obvious intrusiveness etc of most of the stock IM apps.
I myself admit it becomes tedious sometimes when you finally find something that delivers on the requirements you're looking for but sooner or later gets picked up by the big multi billion $ companies and becomes just another like the rest of your blacklisted ones.
My want of my legal rights to privacy is still more important to me so I soldier on no matter what.
I just wish my family/friends werent mostly the 'bury the head in the sand' types who say that 'it's too late now anyway'. They do have a point however that doesn't take into account other very serious privacy invasion issues that we will be dealing with in the very near future!
I seriously don't see how WhatsApp can be seriously offered on techsupportalert as an alternative IM in this day and age, but that's just my opinion!
And exactly that is why I don't like to tweak at all.
I use Classic Shell; there is at least a chance that things will eventually get fixed should an update "break" it.
Worst case I just uninstall Classic Shell and live with W10 as it is meant to be.
If I really hate it I can still switch to Linux and/or run Linux in Virtual Box... ;-)
i read the description of the progs, their functional ... lolwut? A programs is used to restore files, but the description says : "Lacking some features available ..." .wtf?) as far as I know , there is NO good free soft to recover photos / video and other data.I buy Hetman Photo Recovery 4.4 for 19$ and happy
look here and see for yourself https://goo.gl/ZTmyVS
Yes eikelein I think it's true that chances are higher for broken parts when we have more tweaks.
The problem is that we do not know if some tweaks are interlinked in the system settings contained in the registry or hidden files and how they work together.
Micro$oft might update some of them, leaving some remaining tweaked parts untouched since they were considered or supposed to be original without needing an update. It would be perfect if the tweaked parts and the updated parts can work together :) but a nightmare if not :(
Jojo,
The more you "tweak" the higher the chance of the tweak being "broken" by an update; that update does nothing but "reset" the tweak to a known good default like MIcro$oft wants it.
I use a password manager too but the websites I was referring to (MSN may have been one) don't allow copy & paste of passwords from that source or apparently any other (eg. Stickies). I will try that configuration tweak you mentioned to see if that can solve the problem.
I agree, I have some 20 character passwords that combine upper and lower case letters, numerals and the keyboard characters. I copy and paste them from a password manager..........thus the search for a work around. :)
It'as a lot easier than you might think. There are tons of tutorials on Youtube and the web in general, many for specific distros. This is just one example. https://www.pcsteps.com/207-windows-virtual-machine-linux-windows/. The only real issue you might encounter is getting USB recognition for the virtual system but this and anything else are bound to be documented with an appropriate fix in one of the Linux forums. MC - Site Manager.
Excellent finds Rhi. I've come across a couple of websites that don't allow copy & paste of passwords which is very frustrating when they expect you to remember a 16 character sequence off the top of your head. I've been searching for a way to get around that. No Squint is a must have add-on for me. One of it's best features is the ability to change backgrounds of sites such as Gizmo's which are primarily white. This results in much less eye strain particularly when using these sites at night.
Truthfully, I have neither the time or inclination to experiment with Linux.
My Linux interest does not stem from a hobby... but business application... user-friendliness and efficiency... keeping in mind I am tethered to Windows due to specialized applications needed for business.
There are many issues that determine how slow or fast a particular Linux might run on different hardware. This is a good list to experiment with although not all of these are particularly user friendly. My vote goes to MX Linux. MC - Site Manager. http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/10-of-the-most-...
Alan,
Even for your "oldie" laptop I recommend you at least look at Linux Lite (https://www.linuxliteos.com/).
I have found it to be much more efficient with computer resources than Linux Mint which for me slowed a computer (with much more Ooomph than your laptop) down to a virtual crawl.
Will someone at MS please notice that the population is aging, in many cases (like mine) with diminishing ability for eyes to adjust to radically different light levels? I'd like to see a third party develop an appropriately intrusive "app" (shudder) to restore user control over background colors in Window 10, preferably within the next month!

Thank you
I'd lost my disks so thanks for the headsup on this, there's a few comments earlier here saying an OEM is ineligible....unless something will go wrong at the end of my download which is a bit away yet, I am downloading a copy via my OEM key as I type this...the key was even recognised as an OEM key by the site but there was no trouble with commencing the download.......maybe it was blocked on the Digital River site and the updated link allows the download??.
ImgBurn v2.5.8.0 has no more open candy :]
Maybe it's here http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/do-calendar-planner-isotimer.htm...
I've looked at Vivaldi.
This is very confusing.
Might want to take a look at a relatively new entry in the genre: TickTick. Checks pretty much all the boxes I want in a simple to-do list.
How about Elmedia Player:

eikelein,
Thanks.

Check it out at http://mylio.com
Sorry.
Every tech website I visit seems to have something to say about Vivaldi. Much hype. Extremely sluggish loading of pages.
I have downloaded and installed IZArc 4.2 and it's no longer bundled with any adware.

eikelein,
my system is 64-bit Windows 7 as well and GPU Caps Viewer works perfectly, including the newest version.

@Sgluber:
GPU_Caps_Viewer seems to be 32-bit only. Two of it's three tests blew up under my 64-bit Windows 7 system.
YMMV.

Jojo,
You are correct again.
And exactly that is why I don't like to tweak at all.
I use Classic Shell; there is at least a chance that things will eventually get fixed should an update "break" it.
Worst case I just uninstall Classic Shell and live with W10 as it is meant to be.
If I really hate it I can still switch to Linux and/or run Linux in Virtual Box... ;-)
I copy the passwords in the password manager, and then paste them into the fields. It's extra steps but it's better than typing.
i read the description of the progs, their functional ...
GPU-Z is a great tool that I have been used for years.
Another great tool in the same category, that offers still more functionalities is GPU Caps Viewer:
http://www.ozone3d.net/gpu_caps_viewer/
Thank you, rob! :-)
I agree, I have some 20 character passwords that combine upper and lower case letters, numerals and the keyboard characters. I copy and paste them from a password manager..........thus the search for a work around. :)
It appears to me as computers were evolving it was a race for the best bling i.e. good colour outstanding icon graphics.
So what happened now we have to put up with faint characters that are hard to see and often small pale colours and flat grade school quality graphics.
I will do that I did try google with specific for the LiDE 110 but found nothing, tried Canon but they don't support Linux for it.
I have never looked at running a virtual machine thought it might be complicated,
I am running dual boot W7 and Mint 17.3.

Thank you, eikelein and MidnightCowboy !
Truthfully, I have neither the time or inclination to experiment with Linux.
My Linux interest does not stem from a hobby... but business application... user-friendliness and efficiency... keeping in mind I am tethered to Windows due to specialized applications needed for business.
Much appreciate. ~ Alan
There are many issues that determine how slow or fast a particular Linux might run on different hardware. This is a good list to experiment with although not all of these are particularly user friendly. My vote goes to MX Linux. Alan,
Even for your "oldie" laptop I recommend you at least look at Linux Lite (https://www.linuxliteos.com/).

I think Midnight Cowboy runs Windows 7 in a virtual machine using Linux. Maybe he'll chime in with his preferences.
Yep, I've been using IDD for several years now. Not as modern as this new app, but I'm used to it.
