I have an ancient Samsung RV415 laptop with Intel atom and 1G and the 320 hard drive failed. I replaced it with a cheap as chips 120 SSD and added a 4G memory card to the existing 1G. Now it runs many times faster and will no doubt last for a few more years yet.

Are you using Kubuntu or Q4OS on it?

I'm using Kubuntu. Resource use for Plasma 5 is so good now there's no need to discount KDE unless you have the lowest ranked hardware.
