CCleaner released version 5.38 a few days ago.
Before this version, CCleaner used to release the portable version along with the installer version, and released the slim version (without third party software), after a week or so. Now, they have changed their strategy, to get more people to download the installer version. Now, the portable version is released with the slim version, which is atleast a week after the release of the installer version. Also, for the portable and slim version, this is what is written above them: Quote:

I only use the portable version but I'm thinking that these new delays are more likely to be used to get people to download the installer version first, so the new owners can promote their AV product?
I don't think trying to sneak a full anti virus program on to unsuspecting users PC's is a good idea, nor is the wording of the statement you've quoted for the portable and slim versions. But they own it now, and can do as they wish with their product. I just hope they keep providing the portable and slim versions in the future. I was disappointed when it was announced that Avast had bought CCleaner to be honest. I don't really like the way they try to trick people into installing stuff they didn't ask for - because they've done stuff like this in the past. Not good at all. |

Yes, of course the delay is to make people install the installer version. Atleast they used to release the portable version along with it. Now, that is delayed too.
I am particularly disappointed with the wordings. An inexperienced user will of course believe it to be true. But, with advanced users, who are they fooling with such foolish wordings. They can't do away with the portable version. They will come under fire for it, if they do. I liked Avast as a company, but with this step, I am really disappointed with them. I guess, it really is becoming all about money nowadays.

It is all about money, unfortunately. It won't get any better.
I came across this thread on their forum; https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=211936.0 Interesting comments on there regarding this report from Reuters in November; https://www.reuters.com/article/us-c...-idUSKBN1D715Y ... taken from the forum thread I linked to. If that's true, then expect more aggressive marketing strategies from Avast in the future, no matter what they say about having their users best interests at heart. |

If you're happy to do a portable installation/update manually, you can download the installer, extract it using 7-Zip and copy either the 32 bit or 64 bit exe file to the folder of your choice.

The portable and slim versions became available a few days later on the CCleaner site too.

Another version of CCleaner is out.
With this version, the portable version is available, along with the standard version, which is good. But, now, they have done away with the "builds" link that used to appear on the download page. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download So, there is no option to download portable version on the download page. You have to know the link to the builds page to download the portable version, and the slim one, which will appear in a week's time. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds This is really really disappointing.

and I've been telling folks that it was taken over by Avast . . .
- not that most folks can understand, what I'm really meaning. as I'm still awaiting to see if Avast will merge the two products, or keep them separate, like they currently are, - my money is on their eventual merge. |
