What’s new in the Windows 10 April 2018 Update;

Downloaded and installed via WU. Took just over an hour from start to finish. Quite a large download, about six and a half gigs. Everything runs fine, re-booted the machine a few times to settle it down after the initial re-start.

Quite a few changes, which are explained in the blog link above.

Check your settings after the upgrade, some change. Also, if you're running O&O or similar, check those settings as some of those also change.

Updated to the new version 1803 (aka "April 2018 Update") on a laptop.

Experienced a few crashes and needed to re-login to the Windows a few times while trying out the new features in the Edge and running Chrome at the same time.

The app "Microsoft Phone Companion" is going to retire as now linking phones is available via Settings > Phone.

Interesting to explore new features, minus the crashes at the mean time.

To be fair, even though the download was a whopper in size, this upgrade seems to have been a good one for my desktop. The system is definitely snappier, not that it was slow before but this upgrade has made a difference - even Edge is noticeably better.

As has happened with some previous upgrades though, this one disabled my system restore again and for some reason I ended up with a load of rubbish tiles on my Opera speed dial page, and it also changed my Opera default search to Google. Dunno why that happens, but soon rectified.

Still checking out some of the feature changes. But all in all, worth doing the upgrade.

Edge on Android has gotten better too!

Wish i could figure out how to tell Edge on Windows not to change font size to last page viewed. Just because i increased the font on one page doesn't mean i want it to do the same everywhere else.

There's another irritant factor in Edge.
For whatever reason, it has started to load with previous session without my doing anything to that effect in settings. Was it one of the two extensions i've installed lately? Shouldn't take long to check that but i doubt it.

As far back as four years ago all the tech media were talking about Microsoft's quality control or lack thereof and nothing has changed since.

I only have Windows (7) on one machine now and it gets so little use it's almost stagnant and yet I still have to battle with non functioning updates and other issues resulting in "start Windows normally" being my most popular message.

Surely any other product being sold on this scale would be subject to mandatory government intervention on behalf of consumers.

Have to agree with the two previous posts. Reading around, the problems some people face after these updates is not good. I think I've just been lucky with my home desktop so far, no real problems but as I've said before, I reckon it's only a matter of time before it's my turn to feel the pain after an upgrade.

It came to the point, quite some time back, where I stopped using the Win 10 laptop I bought. I never use it, never even switch it on. I grew bored of the constant updating, slow downs and bandwidth hogging that comes with using it. I just want to use the internet and a few other programs on an evening around the house so I bought an Android tablet and that was that. It does want I want it to do perfectly well, without all the updating and upgrading that I got with the laptop. Much less fuss.

I appreciate that I got Win 10 for free, and that using Windows in general over the years has made life easier in so many ways - work etc. It still does. But this Windows as a service thing is not good. To break things like they do, the time and money it can cost to put things right, at times, is unacceptable. We've been in business for many years, and if our quality of work was at the level of some of that from Microsoft we'd be in trouble. We can't afford to turn out shoddy work, there would be serious consequences - we'd be sued. That's not to say things don't occasionally go wrong but if they do, we put it right. We foot the bill. It's our reputation that's at stake. But we're not a massive global company, one with endless corporate resources to bat away any problems that may arise from poor quality of work. We're heavily regulated and rightly so.

It would appear to me that Microsoft (and others) are doing things on the cheap - using their customers to test the quality of their work instead of paying for a large, highly qualified and dedicated department staffed with teams of testers to make damned sure that things are right before pushing these upgrades out.

Truth be told, all they're interested in is the bottom line and keeping the shareholders happy. Average, every day consumers don't really matter anymore. The way of the corporate world - and governments aren't much use when they do intervene. Just look at the recent debacle with Zuckerberg and his crowd.

I just wish these companies were managed better, and that if things do go wrong at the consumer end then help and honesty were more forthcoming.
