New version of Tapin, 1.39.2 has been released. Updated via the program, no problems. Tapin steadily gets better, stations file always updates weekly and many more stations keep being added, even amateur radio repeaters now.

Great to see Tapin still being improved, and still free. If you want the latest info it's best to use the Tapin Facebook page here.

New version of Tapin, 1.40 released. Missed it while I was away but got it now, installed via the program no problems. Changes are;

• Added: Option to select status bar labels (in menu/settings)
• Added: Play random station (also ctrl+f2)
• Fixed: Next and previous streams in options menu
• Added: Option to show peakmeter left or right (also ctrl+F1)

A new version of Tapin has been released, v1.50. I updated it via the program but noticed when doing the install that Tapin now wants to install a toolbar and change your homepage to a deal finder type Website - shopping etc, which I won't link to because it has a yellow WOT rating.

This is from the Tapin Facebook page;

"A brand new Tapin-radio version 1.50. has today been released. There's a change in updating database so it's vitally important to install this version not to be left behind regarding the database updates. All older versions won't update anymore.

Further you can edit existing task in scheduler and in menu/Recording there's a new function to generate playlist.m3u files in a folder you select so you can record whatever you want splitting it in tracks and then using m3u file playing it all at once.

And finally in general tab in options you can allow muntiple instances of Tapin-radio so you can record one radio while listening to the second one
."

No mention of the toolbar.

I went ahead with the install. The recommended installation [with the toolbar etc] is set as default, but you can change that and select the 'Custom Installation' option, which allows you to un-check the three boxes relating to the toolbar.

So I used the custom install, un-checked the three boxes, then continued and updated the program. Tapin updated to v1.50 with no problem - and with no toolbar or homepage changes.

Downloaded the Tapin set-up from their site, uploaded and scanned it at VirusTotal, all clean. Checked every browser I have, searched the machine, no sign of the unwanted toolbar. So the option to opt out of the toolbar works and Tapin is working fine.

It's a shame about this new development, but to be honest I've been half expecting something like this to happen. Once you've done the 'custom installation' and un-checked the boxes everything is fine - but because of that, and the site for the toolbar having a yellow WOT rating, I think it's only right to warn people before updating or installing TapinRadio from now on.

I have no problem with still using it, and will continue to do so, because it's still a very good, free internet radio player and recorder. Lots of freeware comes with various unwanted stuff now, and as long you get the option to opt out of it, it doesn't bother me too much. You just have to be careful when installing it.

I took a screenshot of the installer so I'll try upload it here so anyone who uses Tapin can see it.

There it is. You should be able to see what I'm on about from that image, and also see the boxes to un-check by choosing the 'Custom Installation' - so you don't get the toolbar etc.

Hi Deya,

Thanks for the update news. I downloaded Tapin from their website, and like you, uploaded the installer (8.6 MB) to VT.

I then went carefully through the installation process and stopped at the final install part. There was no mention of any toolbar or custom installation. As I hadn't installed v1.50 I then updated via check for updates within Tapin's GUI.

The exact same thing happened as before ie no mention of any toolbar or custom installation.

The only strange thing that occurred was that my firewall (Comodo) warned me that the update was digitally unsigned.

The actual radio is working fine!

Hi torres, - that's strange, wonder how come I got the toolbar thing? I downloaded the set up from their site but didn't update with that, I did it via the program instead. Once I'd done that, and got the toolbar option, I then part ran the downloaded set up and got the same thing again.

I'll maybe have a look again tomorrow and see what happens. Anyway, main thing is that Tapin is still working fine, if not better, and no harm done. If anyone does get the toolbar option though, the info is up there for how to avoid it.

Ok; I downloaded Tapin on a spare machine, ran the set-up and same thing again, the toolbar option was there. The machine runs in virtual so I did the recommended installation to see what happened.

It installed the DealBulldog toolbar to Internet Explorer and also changed the homepage to somoro, which is a search engine with a red WOT rating. There was also a DealBulldog folder in program files.

A new process, TbHelper2.exe, was constantly running in the task manager and I also noticed that a process called BetterInstaller.exe ran briefly once Tapin was started. It ran for a few seconds then ended by itself.

Did a search and found BetterInstaller - \local settings\TempDIR\BetterInstaller.exe

I then checked my main machine, the one which Tapin is installed on, but without the toolbar option etc, and found BetterInstaller.exe on that one as well. So I deleted it, and doing that had no effect on how Tapin runs. But even though I had opted out of the toolbar stuff during the install, Tapin installed BetterInstaller. It's never done that before.

Re-booted the spare [in virtual] and then downloaded the older version of Tapin [1.40] from CNET and ran the installer. No toolbar option this time and Tapin installed without a problem, and no BetterInstaller. Tried to update the station pre-sets file but it wouldn't work, so I then updated Tapin via the program and during the install process the toolbar option was there again. Did the recommended installation and all the rubbish was installed once more.

At this point I noticed that another new version has now been released, v1.50.1, and on updating Tapin I got the toolbar option stuff again. Opted out of it, Tapin updated without the toolbar but on searching I found, once again, that BetterInstaller.exe was back so, again, I manually deleted it.

So, if I stick with v1.40 I don't get the station pre-set updates anymore. If I update to the latest version, 1.50 or later, I get all the unwanted rubbish with it. I've also noticed that someone is asking question about BetterInstaller on the TapinRadio FaceBook page - no response so far, but something has definitely changed with Tapin in this new release.

Thanks for the update news deya,

I updated to v1.50.1 (via the program) and once again there was no toolbar. The only thing connected to to Tapin in the TM was TapinRadio.exe; no TbHelper2.exe or BetterInstaller. There was also no sign of DealBulldog folder under Program Files.

I like the typo under Version 1.50.1:

Good luck with getting rid of the toolbar etc.

Well that's just it, I don't have the toolbar to get rid of because I used the opt out. It never installed. To make extra sure I've scanned the machine with all the scanners I have, it's clean. The one thing that did install was BetterInstaller, which I only found when I used Search Everything, after seeing the comments on the Tapin FB page.

It only installed the toolbar and changed the homepage on the spare machine because I allowed it to. But it's in virtual so it was all gone after the re-boot.

I've now downloaded Tapin onto a third machine, a Win 7 one this time, just out of curiosity. Ran the installer, accepted the EULA, clicked next and got the same 'Choose Installation Type' screen that I got on the other two machines - the toolbar option. So I just cancelled the install.

Doesn't matter how many times I do it, or which machine I do it on, that screen in the image I posted appears during the install process. Same thing happens when updating via the program.

It's no big deal to me, Tapin is working perfect, it's just more puzzling than anything.

Maybe it's got something to do with those 'Minor big fixes'

Torres; There was something in one of your previous posts, about your firewall warning you about the update, that got me thinking. So I downloaded the setup again and ran it on my machine with PC Tools firewall plus installed.

Once the installer ran I got the 'Setup/Uninstaller is trying to access the internet' pop-up alert from the firewall. I blocked it then carried on with the install process, no toolbar option screen appeared.

Cancelled the install, ran it again but this time when I got the pop-up alert I allowed it and got the toolbar option screen. So the installer is dialing out, and when I checked manage applications in the firewall it shows BETTERINSTALLER.EXE in the list.

So I reckon that your firewall has blocked it. The machines I've been trying it on are running Windows firewall, no alert, so I got the unwanted stuff included in the install. That's what's happening, I've checked and double checked.

Now I know what's happening I'll keep a closer eye on Tapin when updating it in the future, and I think that anyone else who uses it should do the same.

Thanks for your feedback, it helped me solve the puzzle.

Great going er...Sherlock!

Your findings sound totally logical and thus the mystery is solved. I guess Comodo deserve some praise for spotting the 'dial home' shenanigans of Tapin. Just a shame the T devs have gone down the dodgy toolbar route.

Thanks for all your feedback.
