iPad 2 Virus & WiFi Protection

Hey
I have read various articles about the need for virus and non-secure (free) wifi protection for my iPad 2. Any thoughts on whether or not virus protection is needed and any programs that are recommended? Also any thoughts on any programs needed if and when I am using a non-secure wifi connection (when a secure connection is unavailable)? Any articles about security and protection for my iPad would also be helpful.
