I connected my laptop to my ethernet cable and went ahead and installed Kubuntu 18.04 LTS. After many, many updates, I went into the package manager and downloaded and installed several items identified as "broadcom wireless" and rebooted. Lo and behold, upon reboot, both my wifi networks showed up in the network manager and I can connect to my wifi!
Thanks MC. Now...to learn Kubuntu.
