These free mario games look interesting. Do I need to buy any additional equipment for these games to be played on my desktop?

The desktop has Vista Business 32 installed on it and I have a admin and standard user account setup (both password protected). My niece is 10 and I do not want her accessing anything else on my system, so I was looking at logging on as standard and then letting her access the games from there.

I am totally ignorant on this subject. It will be winter when they arrive so I really need to get something set up for this 10 year old.
No, you do not any additional equipment. Just install the games and let her enjoy.

If the child is ten years old, I'd install something educational. I don't think there's much benefit in 2d scrollers. They're fun but it's good to have some games the child can learn from as well.

That's a bit tricky. A lot of the kid friendly games I've seen for windows need to be bought. However that's just inconvenient.

Other kid friendly games require registration on gaming sites or having a browser open.

Gizmo's freeware has only two kid friendly games for windows listed. Out of those two, I thought Marble Arena would be the funniest to play for a child because of it's 3d graphics and funny noises.

Tux4Kids has some nice educational games that are open source. http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/

Tuxmath

Tuxpaint

Tuxtyping

They are cross platform and work on Windows.

A kid friendly web browser or some kid safety features are important. Even if the child doesn't mess up your computer, it still isn't good to have a child marching off to Myspace or Facebook.

It's also important to understand the child's IQ level and interests when customizing fun activities for her. I would ask the child's parents as to any activities she already enjoys doing on a computer and if she doesn't use one, then it's a toss up.

Tnx for all the info, I really appreciate it.

I'll take a look at those games you suggested and I think I will also get Pacman (from the Gizmo list). I'll put some of the mario games on as well ... my brother might enjoy giving them a try.

I have PuppyLinux on a flash drive, so this might be the better way to go.
Tnx again for your advise.

I thought of creating an article on Best Fan Made Mario Games(before this thread even started) because I've a collection of Mario games which also includes the top and the best ones. I've been impressed with a few because their quality matches or is better than most commercial Mario Games from Nintendo.

Cool. If you do, add a section for the hardest, most frustrating Mario hacks. I've laughed myself silly watching people on Youtube try to beat these fan made Mario hacks that are way harder then they should be.

I think Sayobon Action falls into that category then, doesn't it?
