I think this problem is occurring because all of you do not log out of the site, and the forum, at all? If yes, then such a problem will occur, and also that's not the right way.

Most vBulletin forums have this feature that you will be logged out automatically after a scheduled amount of time. Its kind of a security feature. And that is why, you face such problem.

When I shutdown my PC for the day, I always logout from both the forum, and the site.

When I login, I always sign in to the site first, and then I move over to the forum. Never had any problems.

I appreciate what you are saying Anupam but on ALL sites that I visit (and there are many) there is always a "remember me" or similar option. When I save my logged in page in my favourites I just have to select that favourite and I am there. The fact that doesn't work here is not the end of the world but is very annoying. I can live with it.

Although we are not unique (except in terms of what we do ) I guess the other sites you refer to are all single entities. Here we need to combine the main site (running Drupal) with the forum (vBulletin) which presents a different set of challenges.

We are always looking for ways to make our user experience easier within the bounds of the security measures needed to also keep it secure.

I was going to partly say what MC said. MC is right, that other sites do not have this feature of tying up a Drupal based main site with a vBulletin based forum. Half of the problem lies there.

Secondly, I don't think there will be many forums involved in the other sites that you mention. Forums behave differently with respect to login. I think that majority of the forums will have this feature of logging you out, after some period of days. This is a security feature, and is essential IMO.

IMO, its a healthy practice to log out of a site, or forum, when your work is done there, atleast for the day.

Well, we all have our methods of working, and browsing.. but not logging out might be OK, when you are on your own computer in your own house, and no one else uses it. But, if someone else do happen to use it, and in your absence, then such a thing can be considered non-secure... because they can just open the site from your bookmark, and start using it right away.

Also, in case you forget to logout properly, as a habit, when you are somewhere outside, then this security feature comes in handy, as it logs you out. The sooner then, the better.

Our forum also has the feature of "Remember Me", and it works well. And there must be some period of time, before it will log you out though. George must have elongated that period. But, after that period is over, you will of course be logged out. And that is why the trouble. Because, the Drupal based main site does not log you out... and you think that since you are logged in there, you should be logged in the forum too. But, that's not the case.. because you have been logged out of there as a security measure. So, only way is to logout of main site, and then perform the login process.

If you are lazy, this can be simplified by making the browser remember your username, and password. Just open the site, select login, and your credentials will appear. Just login as usual.

OK Anupam, I am not making a big deal of this as I said. It really is not a BIG problem, just a minor annoyance that other folk had commented on previously and, as it was happening to me again, I thought I should mention it. I hadn't considered the fact that the forum and main site uses different linked software and that is where the problem lies. Perfectly good explanation - thanks MC.
However Anupam, just to reply to your last post, nearly all the sites I am talking about ARE forums and, unless I have a 'puter problem, I stay logged in all the time. With regard to this site, since I stopped editing (but stuck with moderating) I very, very rarely go to the main site. Only if I need information on some freeeware, but I am on the forum EVERY day (even if I don't post). My point is that I can be here on the forum for weeks at a time every day and never go to the main site during that time but, suddenly out of the blue, I find myself logged out and have to go to the main site etc. etc. to get back in. As I said, not a big deal and MC has explained the reason but I thought I should just clarify exactly what was happening. Staying logged in is nothing to do with laziness and I rather resent that. It is just my love of playing with software/options and making things faster to jump between various forums that I love to visit. If there really was such a problem with staying logged in then forums wouldn't offer that facility. Anyway, please consider the matter closed, I shall not post again on the subject.

Jim, I completely understand your points and actually concur. Like you, I seldom go to the main site. I spend the bulk of my time here. Until recently, it was very much a pain to have to go through "hoops" to login here at the forums.

However, since the time expiration on the cookie was lengthened a couple days ago (week or so?), I've not had the login/logout problems at all. For me, lengthening the time the cookie expires appears to have worked magic for me.

Jim, sorry if my post offended you in any way, or it feels that I came on too strongly, but it was not meant in that way at all. It was meant to be a general kind of post, and not totally directed at you either, but everyone having the problem. I apologize again, since I think my post agitated you.

I am surprised that you were talking of all forum sites. I always logout whichever site I use, when I am done with it... so I might not have noticed this problem in detail, but sometimes when I accidentally forgot to logout, or I could not because the internet went down, then on the next day, I found that I was logged out of those forums. So, I assumed that forums must have this feature to log you out automatically. But, maybe not all forums adopt this, as you say.

I am no expert on forum software, so don't know how they do this. What I wrote, was what I had observed myself. As I can see, things can be different.

Default 100% successful log-in directly to the Forum

This trick was used before and it still works now, give it a try:

Click either of the links below, you can then 100% log in to the forum directly without the need to go to/fro the main site.

Log in to the Editor's Forum:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/free...editors-forum/

Log in to the Who's Online Page:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/free...rum/online.php

Though either one of this doesn't get you to the main page of the forum, but it's faster to successfully log in without the need to go the main site to log out, log in and come back to the forum again.

The above two links are on my bookmarks bar. It's one click away to log in when I'm logged out of the forum.

I'm glad it works for you!

It doesn't solve the problem of not being able to login to the forum. I have to go to the main site, logout then login again then come to the forum already logged in.

That is correct and intentionally configured that way. The Drupal and VB accounts are synchronized and the logins are chained. The master login is on the main site. You cannot login to the forum standalone.

I know that this is an inconvenience for some, but most say it is ok to get used to.

The safest way to login is as you say: Go to main site, logout, login.
