If you have never tried a mind map program before, and you want a way to help you organize your thoughts and information electronically, check out a Windows app called The Brain. It's a commercial product with a 3-digit price tag, but there's also a free version available for personal non-commercial use which includes most of the important features that you'll need.
You'll find more information at www.thebrain.com, from where you can also download the beta of the latest release. It's an 85 MB file and, although that particular beta will expire in April, the installed version will keep itself updated with later editions so it won't be an issue. The file is malware-free according to VirusTotal, and the download site is rated as reputable by Web of Trust.

Best freeware mind map around is Freeplane (https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeplane/files/?source=navbar). I've used it for years and the usability keeps getting better and better. It is truly a joy to use.
I really have never seen a more dedicated and thoughtful developer and community.
