Default Build 1809 'upgrade'

This pretty much describes the experience I had yesterday having been asked by a friend to help upgrade her system she having failed with multiple attempts. Turned out to be the useless commercial antivirus she had installed that was blocking the upgrade and using a registry cleaner to ‘fit it’ as per her Google search of the problem had only made matters worse.

Removed the crap and eventually got the thing installed but the miriad of lost or changed settings drove both of us nuts to the point she asked for a viable alternative. A brief discussion followed about the requirements for her university course followed by some complimentary stuff about my laptop she’d been looking at. This required some more discussion after I explained this system was regarded by most now as being obsolete (KDE4) plus it was also Russian. Anyway we set to and performed as much of what she needed to do with her course work after which she said screw Windows I want this and that is what she duly got.

Yeah, I'd read that... well, I started reading it then skipped to the conclusion. Glad I use Linux.

I was totally in awe of the whole experience.

Imagine buying a car with Michelin tyres as standard but opting to use Pirelli instead and then every time you turn on the ignition a message pops up on your sat-nav suggesting you try the default tyres instead.

Do folks really still pay for this?

Well.......... to be fair, it's difficult not to if you buy a ready-made PC. But I like to build my own desktops and there's no way I'm shelling out for Windows, Linux works fine for me.
