All,
I have had a very difficult time with the newest version of Hitman Pro, 295 I believe. Scan stops at 20%, won't go any further. I've uninstalled/reinstalled a number of times, makes no difference, still stops at 20%. I can't find a solution to the problem, don't have a clue what the problem really is. Today it simply wouldn't run at all, and I'm not going to chase their anemic support. Any alternative(s) to HMP on the security list that stand out right now? I assume I'm looking at the "1. General" category? Thanks, in advance...

If you're an advanced user, try RoqueKiller.

RogueKiller is for removing serious malware infection. I wouldn't recommend it, unless there are indications of that.
Malwarebytes Antimalware free version is a good alternative.

Thank you, but no infection, none whatsoever. Just cautious.
I run Firefox with Sandboxie, Voodoo Shield is on, Panda is my realtime A/V. Anupam, I should have mentioned that I already run Malwarebytes as a second opinion scanner. I liked Hitman Pro because it got rid of tracking cookies quickly. I read that Zemana is similar to Hitman, I don't know anything about the software. I have always run second opinion scanners, ergo, no infections.

Was a MalwareBytes user in the past, but now it's only good for detecting PUP's and probably the best at the same. It would come at the bottom rung for me when you are considering detection of regular malwares. It has only a single engine for scanning, has average scanning speeds and no portable version.
Zemana is a great alternative that is also portable as well. It's cloud based and has multi-engines (>10) in it's scanner component, so it works best scanning when online. It has really great scanning speeds and even faster removal process. While it works great for highly infected PC's, PUP's and fileless malware's it's not so good against extremely new .exe malwares. HitmanPro (quad engines) is another great free scanner for malware that's as good or better than Zemana and has a portable version, but that's where it ends. Unless you buy the pro version you won't be able to remove the malware, very slow scanning & uploading speeds. However it has the best frequency of updates and is really good against new .exe malwares but is very poor against fileless malwares. Emsisoft Emergency Kit (dual engine) is an all round winner that is portable too but is quite heavy and has big signature updates. It has the best detection out of the above antimalwares and has the best scanning speeds too. Due to the big update sizes, the frequency of updates are very slow. The best idea is to download and keep the portable version (if available) of the above softwares and run it atleast once a month to be sure. Because each one is good in a different way.

George,
Thanks, maybe I'll try Emsisoft, although I've had issues with their software in the past, too many conflicts. As I originally posted, I already use MBAM, my problem was with the new version of Hitman Pro, it won't scan past about 20%, tried for a days to get it to work, it finally wouldn't open at all. I tried Zemana, it really screwed my system; it deleted VoodooShield, and repaired some Firefox extension I never heard of, nor could I find out what it was. I found I had little control with Zemana, I uninstalled it. I run FF in Sandboxie, have Voodoo Shield - that is a great piece of software, support is really great - Winpatrol and Panda real time, with MBAM and Hitman Pro, until my recent issues, as on-demand. I liked Hitman because of the detection and deletion of the tracking cookies. I feel comfortable with what I have, just wanted to find an alternative to Hitman. |

When you are using multiple security software's it's important to exclude each other during scanning process. Chances are that it will treat each other as "potentially" dangerous software. It might even cause your system to freeze if not treated right. Especially with anti-exe's like Voodooshield because other security software's might treat it as a program that can hinder their own functioning. I used to be a user of Voodooshield when Kaspersky Free didn't use to have behavioural blocker and successfully paired them with Zemana.
