Default low resource media player suggestion?

My low resource netbook has a slow Atom processor, only 2GB RAM and Intel HD graphics. Sometimes when I play a vid on VLC the vid stutters or halts. Sometimes the picture and the vid part company.

Is there a media player that can use my limited resources more efficiently?

TIA

Your best option is Windows Media Player - if the video format is supported.
If not, try Media Player Classic - Black Edition.

It will also depend on the quality of the video you are watching. While 720p videos may play fine on your laptop, 1080p might not.
