But I did find out that since version 5.2 - 5.3 is the latest - Macrium Reflect has multiboot support available for its rescue disks, i.e. the rescue disk can be used on PCs with different firmware:

I can't live without something like that these days. Just too much trouble trying to fix boot problems or whatnot.

Thanks for the info. I read through the article and have decided to go for AOMEI as this is an area i'm brand spanking new to, and according to the article this is a lot more newbie friendly. I probably would have gone for Macrium if i understood anything about boot files. Alas i don't, and the description of possibility tanking my system by playing around with it was enough to put me off. Having said that, where would i learn about booting and the options i have with it?

Aomei has some tutorial pages like this one that will help you to use Aomei Backupper. The English is sometimes awkward but it is a good place to start learning.

The Wikipedia article on disk partitioning may be a good place to understand how your physical drives are organized into partitions that correspond to the logical drives that you see in Windows. So one physical drive can have many logical drives each in its own partition. You'll probably only read as far as the advantages and disadvantages to get an idea of what partitioning does.

Aomei allows you to select three types of backup:
  • Disk backup for the entire physical drive.
  • Partition backup for the logical drives you select.
  • System backup to backup the partitions required to startup or boot your system: the boot partition and the Windows system partition.
