The cairo configuration options are pretty vast. You can change the themes and add new applets but in my example most of the icons for instance were chosen and configured individually for each launcher. Cairo is unbeatable though if you can invest the time to set it up although a lot of folks will find one of the default settings perfectly acceptable.

I have installed Cairo and am very impressed, especially with the variety of themes. The only downside I can see of using the dock is that I lose about 2" of vertical space in my browser and any other app I have open.

This doesn't bother me because I have quite a large display but you can set it to auto-hide.

I've tried selecting Keep the Dock Hidden but I still have the loss of vertical space.

Not sure why that is.

I'm using Compiz with MX-17 if that makes any difference but not sure how stable that might be with MX-16.

Presumably the answer must be in here somewhere.

Thanks for the link: looks like I'm going to have fun tweaking to my heart's content!

Zorin OS Lite 12.2 complete with CCSM, Emerald themes, wobbly windows and everything else, all running error free which is more than can be said for the 'full' version of Zorin.

This is BigLinux, a native Brazilian distro also available in English. Comes with Deepin and Cinnamon DE's pre-installed. The Deepin environment is not as good as other offerings but the Cinnamon is cool and classy. My example shows theme/icon tweaks and some Conky examples.
