Freeware Game Of The Week (The Suffering)

Oct 2 - Oct 8 :  Halloween Monthly Special

Imagine you’re transported to an eerie island, to a high security penitentiary on death row that’s crowded with slews of bad-guy’s, for a crime you never actually did (or you might have, but you don’t remember a thing: the story unfolds as you play) but the worst of the worst is yet to happen? As if pitch black cell walls or sure death wasn’t enough, the prison is haunted with horrific monsters and grotesque ghostly figures who kill the in-mates and the prison guardians alike @@!
Chaos erupts and you’re left to gamble for your life as you fight to escape the unleashing of penitentiary’s gruesome secrets in a challenge more terrifying than death itself. Prepare yourself for the GREAT ESCAPE....

Gameplay: The Suffering features ultra-mature content. You take on the role of Torque, an inmate who must face much more than his own inner demons and the harsh and gritty reality of death row for murdering(or not) your family and finally escaping this monster infested prison compound. The game features nine levels, frightening character morphs, and more than 10 deadly weapons from the shiv to the tommy gun to aid in the survival of this freakish nightmare!!
The best parts of the game are its immersive plot, range of monsters and attacks, plenty of gore, some light puzzle solving, 1st person to 3rd person switch, Torque turning into beast in rage mode, thick and eerie atmosphere, flashbacks unfolding in real time and 3 distinctly different endings depending upon how you choose to survive (such as being helpful to other people in need or brutally killing them, will later have an affect on the story and portraying if Torque is actually really guilty or not of murdering his family.) The Suffering is one of the best in its genre and hey, it's the best for a freeware.
Come on, turn the light’s down low, grip your controllers and keypads, crank your sound ystem to max and get ready for a thrilling adventure and onslaught of the blood thirsty monsters late at night.

YES!!! I finally fixed the MISSING/INVISIBLE/TRANSPARENT TEXTURES problem. What I did was just delete SettingsDX105 from the registry and then ran Suffering.exe and on the configuration utility I just set everything to the highest settings possible. If that doesn't work for you, try various settings from the configuration utility.

Note: On my particular registry, the SettingsDX105 is located under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Wow6432Node->Surreal->Riot Engine

and not under

Either way, if you can't find it manually, just use ctrl+f and type in "Riot Engine" then hit "Enter"

Thank you for reporting this. I assume yours is a 64 bit system, so that's why the entry was located in WOW6432 node. I'll add this info to the main article.
