Have you tried Linux Distribution Chooser?

They found the following perfect matches for me:

Ubuntu 100%
Linux Mint 100%
Fedora 100%
Mandriva 100%
OpenSuSE 100%

Hmmm... so many are perfect matches, but which is the best, huh

Got the same exact results.

Funny though....I have mepis installed ........tried mint, mandriva, fedore and (ubuntu twice)
The only distro that actually allowed me to get stuff done with out making me frustrated was mepis. Conservative but rock solid.

Note: DistroWatch list's Mepis as a good distro for beginners

The first time I took that test, it recommends Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Mandriva, and OpenSUSE as 100% and some other distro as 95% or was it 90%. Now, I took the test again and it recommends Mandriva, OpenSUSE, PCLinuxOS, MEPIS, Fedora and Kubuntu as 100%, also Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Debian as 95% because of the following...

May not be suitable because:
# Does not use the desired desktop environment, but has it available

As you had guessed it, KDE...

I just tried that distribution chooser and it suggested the following

Gentoo 95%
Slackware 95%

I had a Gentoo system a while back and it was the biggest pain in the ass.
It took 2 days to compile the system and another 2 weeks getting my applications installed. Portage was cool at first, but I found that it was to much of a hassle to install and remove new software just to see if I liked it. In addition, I had to manually edit config files when libraries were upgraded.

Never bothered with Slackware

I've tried the following distros, but nothing really clicked:
RedHat (way back when, about 1997)
openSUSE
Debian
Gentoo
Startcom
Sabayon
Mint
Fedora

I'm currently using Mangaka Chu it's a Debian/Ubuntu based distro for the Anime community, and my favorite, by far!!

I'm having a great time with this distro, looks like I finally found what works best for me.

I installed puppy on a a usb flash stick and I am impressed. I believe Puppy is debian based with a sprinkle of this and that. Next to Mepis it was the best so far for finding my hardware. It has every app that I want or will ever use. The part I love is I can carry it in my pocket. Plug in to a friends computer an BAM Instant Linux! The best way to get people jazzed with Linux is to show them.

Been using #! Crunchbang for a few weeks now. I like the minimal appearance but as it's based on Ubuntu there plenty of support and repos and has the stability of Ubuntu. Dual booting with Vista ... and so far so good.

I have my newest laptop (7 months old) which is running Ubuntu, and old HP Tower that is running Simply Mepis, and an older laptop that is running Puppy.

I love Ubuntu, but find that my family are preferring the ease they can learn using Mepis....

All are excellent in their own ways, and I am surely satisfied with the fact that I can get a lot more use from older machines also...

I've put #! Crunchbang Linux on an old laptop for my 9 yo daughter to use. Added MTPaint and there's another happy linux user!! She likes the idea of "Super W" to get on the internet!!!

Linux Mint. Great O.S. lags behind Ubuntu in distro releases though. Makes me impatient sometimes.
