do you use? Please tell us, so we get some sort of impression, what's going on amongst our users. Also, if you want to share some insight and experience with a distro, open a thread, and let us know

Yes, of course you may, alas, it would do no good
![]() I simply took the ten most used distros from a poll on distrowatch, and our poll here can't have more than ten entries. Sorry, mate

Hi All,
I use Fedora for it's reliability, the upgrade capability is excellent, replaces everything including the kernel without a reboot, very impressive. I also use Vector on very old machines, its extremely lightweight and will run ok with an old P3 and 128 Mb of RAM. Have fun. Laurent |

Well I am new to the Linux scene. I imagine like most I was not sure i wanted to try it, for fear of not knowing what I was doing. I loaded Ubuntu on a machine that was having trouble with windows, and it loaded up, updated itself, and ran flawlessly. I was very impressed. It didn't take long for me to figure out how to run the different built in software, again very impressed with these.
It did take a little while to figure out how to install new software and to get other things to run on it. However after some time, I was able to install and play a call of duty game. I think Linux is ready for the average user, but since a lot of apps, and games (I'm a gamer) won't work on it, I personally can't run it on my main machine. I would like to try running it as a home server, does anyone have any experience with that. |

I keep trying different ones. The great thing is, it doesn't have all that heavy duty protection that you wait to load. At the moment, having just gotten a new comp I am running OpenSuse and just figuring it out. It is one I have wanted to load since I start looking at Linux, it just would not load on my old machine. Now its working there are a few quibbles but I am sorting them out. I am very pleased with it, still have WindowsXP. In fact it took me a few hours to load Linux, still just a few tweaks, but now working fine. Windows I haven't finished yet and that takes me to get it how I want it days. As its a new comp I thought I would have problems with Linux, as it turned out it was the other way round!!

PCLinuxOS rules! Or at least it would do if someone could figure out how you get my Sony Ericsson USB broadband to work with it. I still have a thread on the forum with about a million hits and no replies! Used Ubuntu for a while but switched back to Windows for reasons I've given in the other thread here.
I still boot the live disc from PCLinux occasionally and wish that I could use it more (don't want a dual boot). I love the dark desktop and just everything I need is included with the package (except the 'how to' for my wireless connection!) |

For those that are thinking of giving linux a try. Stability will make the difference if people will continue using linux or fly back to windows and never look back. It simply has to work out of the box.
I can think of several stable platforms. Mint, Pclinux and my personal favorite Simply Mepis. Another major issue is installing linux side by side windows. I believe people will be hesitant to delete windows and dive right into linux. Cheers wdhpr |
