Ecosia Search Engine – Trees and Privacy

The Ecosia search engine, search and plants trees…

There are alternatives to Google when it comes to searching the Internet, such as StartPage and DuckDuckGo, but none with the green credentials of Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees. It is one of the world’s largest social businesses and the first B Corporation in Germany. It was founded in 2009 by Christian Kroll who is the CEO of Ecosia.

As part of their mission to cultivate a more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable world, they are planting and protecting forests by enabling people to channel their everyday actions into environmental good. Hurrah!

Ecosia home page

So far, 15 million users, and counting, have planted over 134 million trees. This is achieved by donating 80% of its surplus ad revenue. They have no third party trackers and don’t sell data to advertisers. For approximately every 45 searches Ecosia will plant a tree on your behalf, somewhere in the world, from as far afield as Indonesia, South America and Africa. Since 2019, after they built their own energy plant, every search is powered by solar energy.

In addition to the browser version, there are apps for both Android and iOS.

You don’t need to be a tree-hugger to use Ecosia, just someone who cares about climate change and the future safeguarding of planet Earth. Now surely, that can’t be a bad thing can it?
