Details

Reversi, also known as Othello, is a classic strategy board game good for all ages, easy to learn and play but not easy to win.

To learn or enhance your strategies in playing the game, get those programs or apps that are equipped with a good engine to provide hints and evaluations of best moves. Zebra created by Gunnar Andersson is generally considered as one of the strongest engines in the market and can serve as your trainer for the game.

To play Reversi with this engine, you will need a user interface like WZebra, the Windows version developed by Lars Ivansson in a joint project with Andersson.

As for the Android version of Reversi using this well known Zebra engine, get this excellent game app Reversatile, a fork of the discontinued DroidZebra app by Alex Kompra.

Reversatile is open source, no ads, and has a very clean user interface.

With this 2-player game, you can play with your friend, against the Zebra engine, or Zebra versus Zebra by setting the engine function in the app.

By default, this app indicates valid moves for you. Switch to a practice move if you want it to show evaluation marks of possible moves on the board. You’re likely getting better moves by following higher marks evaluated by the app’s engine. Basic functions such as redos and undos are supported.

Using the engine with a built-in opening book, Reversatile offers you an option to adjust engine strength with a search depth from 1 to 20 moves; the deeper search, the higher difficulty level you get.

Besides the search depth, you can opt for other settings like auto forced moves, random moves, forced openings, human openings, or using the opening book in the settings.
