This Lightweight Image Viewer for Windows is Fast and Versatile 2 weeks 1 day ago Sturgeon General

Thank you rhiannon, for this find. It looks awesome on the surface. Lots of decent simple and straight forward looking features is always a treat. I personally use FastStone Image Viewer. After doing a rough comparison, I can say Quick Picture Viewer opens in about 3/4 of a second on my desktop. Meanwhile FastStone Image Viewer opens in about 1.5 seconds. To myself, I find that impressive. I will be keeping this on my computer along with FastStone Image Viewer and will see in time which turns out to be the overall best for me with simple everyday use. My only immediate suggestion for Quick Picture Viewer would be the ability to also have text on the menu bar along with the small icons.

6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 7 years 8 months ago subscriptionsformpb

I use Feeddemon to actually add and read feeds. However, the best thing about GoogleReader was the ability to share and/or comment on feeds (in FeedDemon) and share to subscribers via GoogleReader share. GoogleReader deleter the share feature for new users some time ago, but the oldsters still got to share.

So, what will replace sharing feeds with others? (via an RSS)?

Del.icio.us dumped my previous library and accounts when they became delicious.com. Connotea is no more.

view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 7 years 8 months ago subscriptionsformpb

Sharing to those specific sites means someone has to have an account to see the article shared. Will any provide an open feed to the shared content, like GReader used to? I would post the shared feed to my websites and folks could subscribe from there or in their own reader to my shared reads.

Feeddemon allows sharing by email which means a Wordpress or Tumblr could provide the library location (post by email) and those have feeds of tagged posts.

Sounds like a hassle...

WordPress either free or hosted is pretty good at showing you what has permission from elsewhere.

LinkedIn app is one of the worst. It doesn't need permission once installed on your phone or tablet to start telling you to connect to your long-dead grandmother.

Best Free Notes Organizer 7 years 3 months ago substorm

I have searched the entire internet to find a notes organizer with the following features:
- Search as you type (find all word instances just like in CintaNotes and ResophNotes)
- Rich Text support including images
- Flagging
- Alarms/Reminders like in Pnotes
- Re-arranging of notes in a list using shortcuts or dragging
- Category folders (could be in a folder tree)
- create notes from clipboard
- offline
- portable

The closest is Evernote but with their enforced cloud approach it won't work for me.

If ResophNotes could store images, I would be set. I find ResophNotes much better than CintaNotes since ResophNotes just works. For instance, try searching in CintaNotes for a repeating word in a large note. It displays the found instances in the preview but once you open the note, you only see the first found instance. A huge bug!

If you know anything that has similar features, please let me know.

It diminishes value of your guidance. I want to feel I can track down a Gismo's offering, without discovering it's problematic when I get there. Truly curious.

Using Firefox for about 3-4 years now, very good.
But, what really disappointed me is that Firefox always hang when Flash contents are loaded. Flashblock can no longer block Youtube on latest Firefox 21 beta.
Internet Explorer is a very good option, with its deep integration with Windows 7, and is the first browser that I had ever used and know, and seems most friendly with screen readers.
But, IE has limited number of add ons, and I need to use third-party programs to back up my profile!
Chrome looks interesting, but screen reader, particularly Jaws, does not work too well with it, but at least it does not hang when Flash contents are loaded, and like FF it has dozens of extensions, the combined address and search box is very cool (IE has it too), the sync feature rocks, and starts up very fast.
Now I don't know whether to remain using Firefox or go back to IE. I will have to leave Chrome out until screen reader support has improved.

view
Best Free Mega Web Browser 7 years 7 months ago supanut

Oh wow, it worked! Thanks very much for this tip! I didn't even know that this feature was there!
Mozilla should make it visible to normal users though, since normal users would probably not bother with about:config thing; rather, they will probably look under Firefox options window.

view
Best Free Mega Web Browser 7 years 4 months ago supanut

I would agree on those points, but I think the reason for Firefox's slow startup is because it have to load its components, while with IE some components of the browser is already loaded along with Windows.
Now I'm using IE, and I like its Windows intigration features, but too bad few sites took advantage of it.
I do still like Firefox for its customization and no rebooting the system when installing, and also of its huge add on directory, and also its rapid development cycle compared to that of IE.
Also, IE have 1 very annoying problem, and that is it loads some unnecessary iFrames and adds, even with the 'do not track' feature enabled, while Firefox didn't and so thus loads a bit faster.

After my try with Avira, I am now considering whether I should change my AV. I like MSE for its non-intrusiveness, but the new versions rarely get released. Avira, on the other hands, has new versions more often, but it may have some annoying popups that I may not like too much.
I'm on a core I5 with 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate X64, and MSE didn't seem to eat too much resources, but I've heard from some of the comments that Avira doesn't use up as much resources as MSE.

Rocketdock is great, but after I reformatted my PC, I felt too lazy to install it, Windows 7's superbar is great with jumplists similar to OSX's dock (although less customizable). For me the Windows 7 taskbar is more than enough, the higher your screen resolution is, the more that can fit on the taskbar.

view
Best Free Program Launcher 7 years 9 months ago supanut

I have to agree with those points. Rocketdock is indeed the greatest, as I've seen it featured in almost all Windows - Mac transformation packs/tutorials.
Also one unique feature is that I can pin specific files to Rocketdock while the Windows 7 taskbar can't!
Although, I may decide to install Rocketdock later, if I feel that I want something cool for my desktop.
One question, are any of these still in development? Rocketdock I think has no updates for several years and it kinds of becoming outdated.

How To Write Down Your Passwords Yet Remain Secure 7 years 6 months ago supanut

Good idea,
But what about those visually impaired? They can't physically write things down; me included. Re Mobysaurus

Anyone planning to run the above on a Win 7 64bit or higher machine needs to download an updated DLL file in order for it to work. I couldn't find much on it other than an obscure post by the developer himself.

After installation the current "dc_lic.dll" needs to be replaced with the updated one.
Download the above named file & then paste same into the Mobysaurus directory which will replace the origional 32bit dll. After that it should work fine.

Link to the developer's note is here : http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=18066.0;wap2

Link to the updated version of said file is on the page.
[Moderator's note: Link to direct download of file edited out. Not allowed]

Copy & paste the new "dc_lic.dll" into :

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mobysaurus Thesaurus

PDF Import for Apache OpenOffice 4 years 2 months ago SusanI

HI I have downloaded this extension for OpenOffice but I am damned if I can get it to do anything with a .pdf. I downloaded it an installed it, closed and opened Open Office again, then went to extension manager, and it seems it is indeed installed (although I didn't get a chance to "enable" it...but when I open Draw and try to "Open" my .pdf document (that I want to edit, in that I want to take text from it and put it into a WORD document), it gives me a a document with a number of pages in it that contain complete gobbledygook for the first few lines and then leave the rest of the page blank, and the document contains a number of pages like this. The original .pdf document is quite long. How can I correct this, is this plug-in not supposed to just open the .pdf document in "OpenOffice Draw"? What am I doing wrong?

"Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition" has a serious problem, I tested it on three different computers running Windows 7 x64, and on each one the program/installer was in Romanian and the option to change the language was greyed out, this issue has been there ever since it came out and I never managed to find a solution for it.

Also, I'd like to know your thoughts on "ZoneAlarm® Free Antivirus + Firewall 2015" I've used it in the past and my experience with it was quite positive.

I always download it from Bitdefender's official website: http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

Thanks for pointing that out, I will check the other article.

One more thing, I'm curious as to why "MSE" isn't included in that list? From my experience it's an excellent set-and-forget antivirus and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it has been integrated in Windows 8 and higher.

I am still curious as to why "MSE" isn't included in that list? It remains to this day one of my favorites and from my experience it proved to be an excellent set-and-forget free antivirus.

Also, could you state which antivirus require yearly (free) registration (such as Avast) in order to continue to function? Because the "set-and-forget" is an important factor for me since I tend to install AV on several PCs.

In any case, I tried briefly but it was disappointing. It has several flaws, some of which you mentioned already, but there are two particular flaws that were a deal breaker for me.

1) The automatic categorization for downloads seems to be broken, more often than not it would give me the category of "None" regardless of the extension of the file I'm downloading.

2) The integration does not work unless "Ninja Download" is running in the background. If you close it, then the integration either doesn't work or gives you an error. I shouldn't have to keep it open 24/7 in the background, I certainly don't need to do that with FDM.

In any case, it looked promising, but FDM remains my favorite still.

Tixati "attractive interface"? I know it's a matter of taste but I personally find it absolutely hideous.

view

None taken, by the same logic your statement "attractive interface" is equally meaningless?

In any case, I was referring to the interface design. The use of "Buttons" for almost everything, the large bland icons, the colorfully vague logo design. It all reminds me of applications that was made with VB5/6 for Windows 9X back in the day.

I tried it and from what I could tell, you can't really change anything about the interface design. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but you can change colors and fonts, but the icons and ultimately the overall design remains the same.

I've been trying qBitTorrent for a while now but I'm fed-up with its bugs.

If I try to add a torrent that I downloaded a part of previously, it doesn't automatically recheck, all it does is stay "Stalled" and manual/forced recheck does nothing, it just re-downloads everything again after the check is done.

Also, when trying to change the download folder for the torrent, it becomes utterly retarded. Sometimes it works, but often it downloads some of the content to the new folder and the rest in a folder with the original name, it's so frustrating.

The only feature I liked about was the "sequential download" option, it's very helpful when downloading series..etc

I'll probably go back to uTorrent 2.2 since I still can't find a decent replacement.

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 5 years 7 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

Personally, I never had any issues with OpenCandy nor have I ever considered it "controversial" to begin with. On the contrary, I have discovered some useful applications through it on more than one occasion.

OpenCandy is legitimate way for developers to earn a little money from the applications that they distribute for free. It's perfectly harmless and all its offerings are always optional.

If you have a problem with OpenCandy, then you're free to look for an alternative. But demonizing it doesn't help anyone.

Adware is not perfect but it's not necessarily evil either.

PS: I'm not affiliated with OpenCandy in any way.

view
Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 5 years 6 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I never had OpenCandy install an application that I explicitly declined its offer, not even once. Also, it's not hidden at all. All the applications I have tried that had OpenCandy, it was clear that was optional, but people rarely bother read and many are just to the "next-next-ok" sequence. But whose fault is that? We're not talking about some ambiguous "fine print" here, the option to decline is right there.

Deficient? I wouldn't know. Perhaps careless? I can't understand why so many people complain about it, AFAIK anyone can bypass it completely using a switch, an application (Unchecky?) or simple common sense. And even then people are always free to look for alternatives.

It's not that I love OpenCandy, but this all feels like some sort of witch-hunt to me. If you personally experienced OpenCandy installing applications without your consent or it installing actual harmful software then I'd like to know, really. I simply never experienced any issues with it nor have I ever felt it to be harmful.

Personally, I despise MediaCoder, that nag screen makes it impossible to batch-encode anything. And the only way to get rid of it, is to "donate" $35 or more (that or buy the premium version obviously).

I suggest "Lightning Browser", it's lightweight and gets the job done.

I tried most music players out there but JetAudio remains my favorite.

Best Free File Manager for Android 5 years 10 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

"File Commander" is an excellent file manager with a beautiful interface, but lacks some advanced features.

"FX File Explorer" remains my favorite though, it's well designed and it has root support which is a must for me.

Best Free Internet Security Suite 6 years 1 month ago SwanKnight (not verified)

It's sad there aren't many security products that offers an integrated firewall. That being said, I've used "ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall" before and my experience with it has been positive.

The Best Photo Viewer I've Seen In Years. And It's Free. 6 years 6 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

Tried it briefly but didn't like it at all. I found the interface to be clunky and confusing. I think I'll stick with FastStone ImageViewer instead.

AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 5 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

You make it sound like OpenCandy is some sort of malware, it is not. It's adware, and last time I checked it's completely optional.

It's not unreasonable for developers to try earn some money by including something like OpenCandy which is as far as I can tell is completely harmless. If you don't like the included application(s), then choose not to install them, it's as simple as that.

I'm really getting tired of people whining about OpenCandy.

AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 5 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I'm afraid I've noticed a certain degree of bias against OpenCandy on several occasions from some Gizmo's staff/users, so how can I not complain when they demonize "OpenCandy" and use terms such as "OpenCandy-infected".

Also, the author goes as far was stating that he cannot recommend the installable version just because it comes with OpenCandy? That's not fair in my opinion.

OpenCandy is not malware and I've never faced any problems with it, I always just unchecked it and installed the application normally.

There are far worse adwares out there, some cleverly hidden that the user could miss it and other don't even give you a choice.

Use This Keyboard App When Sliding Is Faster Than Typing 6 years 4 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I tried them all, but I couldn't find anything that could replace "Swype Keyboard Free" for me. It's not perfect, but for someone who relies heavily on "swipe to type" it's the best.

The free version of FRAPS is crippleware, it's way too limited to be of any real use.

Increase Your Browsing Speed And Privacy With Ghostery 6 years 3 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I used to use "Ghostery" for quite some time, but I got tired of it breaking certain webpages that I visit frequently and I wasn't exactly fond of how they made their money.

In any case, I'm using "DoNotTrackMe" now and so far I haven't had any of the issues I was facing with "Ghostery".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the free version of Unity doesn't allow to publish to mobile platforms, as I recall, even in the pro version, mobile platforms had extra cost individually.

Here are the differences between the "Community" and "Express" editions in case anyone is curious:

Also, more information here:

I'm curious though, why is it so large when "Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate" is roughly 3.5GB and "Visual Studio 2013 Premium" is about 2.8GB?

A Reminder: If You Use Windows, Just Get Flux 5 years 10 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I tried this a long time ago and I distinctly remember that I hated it at the time. The idea sounds great in theory, but in reality it kept dimming the screen too much, it was never comfortable.

Perhaps it improved over time, I'll give it another shot.

Edit: No, it's still too uncomfortable for eyes, also there's no option to detect games/movies so it can be disabled automatically as far as I could tell.

Develop Web Sites On Your Own PC Easily And Safely 5 years 10 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

The title is a bit misleading; the term "Develop" suggest the article is about some sort of web development IDE or suite.

I suggest using "Host" instead of "Develop" (for the title).
