How to Restore the Google Chrome Browser New Tab Page to the Previous Appearance 6 years 10 months ago suruha

Oh, YES! I did not like the 'new' window! I had no idea that, 1) it could be changed, and, 2) how on earth to change it - I wouldn't have even known what to look up!
I, too, like to use the 'Recently Closed' feature. I'll see something just as I click the 'X' to close the tab. Without that feature, I was lost! LOL

Thank you so very much!

PDF Import for Apache OpenOffice 3 years 10 months ago SusanI

HI I have downloaded this extension for OpenOffice but I am damned if I can get it to do anything with a .pdf. I downloaded it an installed it, closed and opened Open Office again, then went to extension manager, and it seems it is indeed installed (although I didn't get a chance to "enable" it...but when I open Draw and try to "Open" my .pdf document (that I want to edit, in that I want to take text from it and put it into a WORD document), it gives me a a document with a number of pages in it that contain complete gobbledygook for the first few lines and then leave the rest of the page blank, and the document contains a number of pages like this. The original .pdf document is quite long. How can I correct this, is this plug-in not supposed to just open the .pdf document in "OpenOffice Draw"? What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks.

I am really sorry to say that i found this article really poor, there's not any observation about the use of resources for each of these browsers, nor about the actual performance of each in comparison with others, all was in an anecdotal level and then there's not much anecdote either. I was happy when I found this article but got quite disappointed with the actual content.

"Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition" has a serious problem, I tested it on three different computers running Windows 7 x64, and on each one the program/installer was in Romanian and the option to change the language was greyed out, this issue has been there ever since it came out and I never managed to find a solution for it.

Also, I'd like to know your thoughts on "ZoneAlarm® Free Antivirus + Firewall 2015" I've used it in the past and my experience with it was quite positive.

view
Best Free Antivirus Software 5 years 10 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I always download it from Bitdefender's official website: http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

Thanks for pointing that out, I will check the other article.

One more thing, I'm curious as to why "MSE" isn't included in that list? From my experience it's an excellent set-and-forget antivirus and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it has been integrated in Windows 8 and higher.

view
Best Free Antivirus Software 5 years 10 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

Not possible, all three computers I tested this issue on they are in English.

I also just tested right now on my own laptop (running Windows 8.1 x64) and I'm having the exact same issue.

However I managed to find a workaround for this issue here:

I am still curious as to why "MSE" isn't included in that list? It remains to this day one of my favorites and from my experience it proved to be an excellent set-and-forget free antivirus.

Also, could you state which antivirus require yearly (free) registration (such as Avast) in order to continue to function? Because the "set-and-forget" is an important factor for me since I tend to install AV on several PCs.

I tried it today briefly but it was disappointing. During the initial scan it stated that it found and cleaned 16 infected files which is highly unlikley considering the semi-empty PC I was testing it on, but even when I opened its log, it was empty. Also, the fact it has no options to speak of leaves a lot to be desired.

Best Free Download Manager 5 years 6 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

You stated that "Ninja Download" doesn't support IE, but according to the download page, it supports IE out of the box.

In any case, I tried briefly but it was disappointing. It has several flaws, some of which you mentioned already, but there are two particular flaws that were a deal breaker for me.

1) The automatic categorization for downloads seems to be broken, more often than not it would give me the category of "None" regardless of the extension of the file I'm downloading.

2) The integration does not work unless "Ninja Download" is running in the background. If you close it, then the integration either doesn't work or gives you an error. I shouldn't have to keep it open 24/7 in the background, I certainly don't need to do that with FDM.

In any case, it looked promising, but FDM remains my favorite still.

Tixati "attractive interface"? I know it's a matter of taste but I personally find it absolutely hideous.

As for me, I'm still using uTorrent 2.2.1 and haven't had a problem with it so far. I imagine that there will come a time when I have to upgrade, but not today.

view
Best Free BitTorrent Client 5 years 6 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

None taken, by the same logic your statement "attractive interface" is equally meaningless?

In any case, I was referring to the interface design. The use of "Buttons" for almost everything, the large bland icons, the colorfully vague logo design. It all reminds me of applications that was made with VB5/6 for Windows 9X back in the day.

I tried it and from what I could tell, you can't really change anything about the interface design. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but you can change colors and fonts, but the icons and ultimately the overall design remains the same.

I've been trying qBitTorrent for a while now but I'm fed-up with its bugs.

If I try to add a torrent that I downloaded a part of previously, it doesn't automatically recheck, all it does is stay "Stalled" and manual/forced recheck does nothing, it just re-downloads everything again after the check is done.

Also, when trying to change the download folder for the torrent, it becomes utterly retarded. Sometimes it works, but often it downloads some of the content to the new folder and the rest in a folder with the original name, it's so frustrating.

The only feature I liked about was the "sequential download" option, it's very helpful when downloading series..etc

I'll probably go back to uTorrent 2.2 since I still can't find a decent replacement.

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 5 years 4 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

Personally, I never had any issues with OpenCandy nor have I ever considered it "controversial" to begin with. On the contrary, I have discovered some useful applications through it on more than one occasion.

OpenCandy is legitimate way for developers to earn a little money from the applications that they distribute for free. It's perfectly harmless and all its offerings are always optional.

If you have a problem with OpenCandy, then you're free to look for an alternative. But demonizing it doesn't help anyone.

Adware is not perfect but it's not necessarily evil either.

PS: I'm not affiliated with OpenCandy in any way.

view
Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 5 years 2 months ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I never had OpenCandy install an application that I explicitly declined its offer, not even once. Also, it's not hidden at all. All the applications I have tried that had OpenCandy, it was clear that was optional, but people rarely bother read and many are just to the "next-next-ok" sequence. But whose fault is that? We're not talking about some ambiguous "fine print" here, the option to decline is right there.

Deficient? I wouldn't know. Perhaps careless? I can't understand why so many people complain about it, AFAIK anyone can bypass it completely using a switch, an application (Unchecky?) or simple common sense. And even then people are always free to look for alternatives.

It's not that I love OpenCandy, but this all feels like some sort of witch-hunt to me. If you personally experienced OpenCandy installing applications without your consent or it installing actual harmful software then I'd like to know, really. I simply never experienced any issues with it nor have I ever felt it to be harmful.

That being said, VidCoder is basically HandBrake (GUI) done right, its far more stable and supports all of its necessary functions while providing a simple and friendly interface, so thanks a lot for that suggestion.

AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 1 month ago SwanKnight (not verified)

You make it sound like OpenCandy is some sort of malware, it is not. It's adware, and last time I checked it's completely optional.

It's not unreasonable for developers to try earn some money by including something like OpenCandy which is as far as I can tell is completely harmless. If you don't like the included application(s), then choose not to install them, it's as simple as that.

I'm really getting tired of people whining about OpenCandy.

view
AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 1 month ago SwanKnight (not verified)

I'm afraid I've noticed a certain degree of bias against OpenCandy on several occasions from some Gizmo's staff/users, so how can I not complain when they demonize "OpenCandy" and use terms such as "OpenCandy-infected".

Also, the author goes as far was stating that he cannot recommend the installable version just because it comes with OpenCandy? That's not fair in my opinion.

OpenCandy is not malware and I've never faced any problems with it, I always just unchecked it and installed the application normally.

There are far worse adwares out there, some cleverly hidden that the user could miss it and other don't even give you a choice.

AstroGrep's results presentation is much nicer, and it saves unprintable characters when saving all result lines to a file. I do lots of FIX log searching, and that's a nice feature. However, for complex searches AstroGrep is so slow it's essentially not usable. Sigh. On that note, jko, have you figured out how to get Agent Ransack to use boolean operators? I've never been able to get it to work (short of using a regex similar to below).

Ok so I guess its really unfair to judge the list (and the webpage) on one experience, but then it is equally unfair to HIGHLY rate CRIPPLEWARE that is NOT 64 BIT SOFTWARE like the list says. I mean we are not talking some ho hum "yea its ok" review, but "EDITORS CHOICE"...

So I DL WPS, only to find out from task manager that is is not 64 bit at all, but a 32 bit program.
And then when I come here to express my disappointment, I find out that printing is disabled. I know you say it prints, but any program that watermarks a feature is making that feature useless -- would you print your resume on that, ya know that BIG JOB you were aiming at. Really? Would you ? Turn in a resume with a huge KINGSOFT across it. Go right ahead but don't be supprised when they DONT CALL YOU! :-D

So my first experience here has been HORRID at best - I didn't get a 64 bit office suite, I didn't get freeware, and the whole review is so much hoowee. But then it seems such doesn't exist -it anyone finds one please inform.

But that doesn't mean the rest are all bad ... I will keep an open mind. BUT I really really hope you learn that FREEWARE and CRIPPLEWARE are not the same - VLC is freeware - WPS is not.

You could have something really big here going forward as 32 bit dies and everything goes 64 bit. You could be the definitive sourse for 64 bit Freeware. BUT ONLY IF YOU DRAW THE LINE AND HOLD FAST TO IT -
No crippleware and no 32 bit software belong on this list.

If you do that it will be golden, if you don't it will be 'the fool'.

Best Free BitTorrent Client 5 years 9 months ago swreynolds

I just dumped BitTorrent. For the last 2 days it has been spouting political ads while it's running. Either they've sold out, or the program has been infected. My system tests clean, though.

Thanks Phyllis, much better. I'd still like real appearing snowflakes, but these are good enough for my Christmas party.

I couldn't find https://rainmeter.net/. I just get ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH (Chrome)
However, Firefox worked fine.

I tried CCleaner once. It removed so little junk that I didn't use it again. Look at DriveTidy or Find Junk Files if you want junk files removed. Caution, not for the feint of heart.

What an awful pain navigating different download mirrors to actually find the iso! Even the Stalwart Major Geeks was unusable.

Best Free File-Based Backup Program 5 years 11 months ago SyDiko

In my opinion, and I'm sad it didn't make the list yet, but Cobian backup is probably the best free backup software available. UNFORTUNATELY, last Novemberish (2013) the developer has stopped releasing updates and sold off the source code, but its still free and the current version is as stable as cement. :)

Still Got An XP Machine? Turn It On Now. 6 years 3 months ago SyDiko

I think what people need to realize is security goes far beyond your operating system. A decent antivirus is all you need to lock up your computer from viral. However, your network is what should really be lock-down. No matter how secure your computer may be, what's to stop someone from accessing your machine from a whole in your LAN.

If You're Using Windows Remote Desktop You Need To Read This 6 years 1 month ago SyDiko

I'd like to shine some additional light on this topic, because technically any publicly facing computers can suffer from brute-force attacks regardless of the port. And, what I mean by, 'publicly facing' is a computer that can be accessed from the internet or outside of your network.

If you are worried about a brute-force attack on your publicly facing machine then you may want to also look into:

Changing the port of the RDP protocol
- As stated in the article, 3389 is the default RDP port, but this can be changed...GOOGLE IT!

Change the Name of your Administrator account
- Either change the name or disable the account altogether.

Set Complex passwords (10+ combination of upper, lower, and special characters) on your admin account(s)
- Shouldn't have to explain this, but complexity negates brute-force by sheer time constraints. For example, lets say you use the word password, as a password. It's already 8 characters in length, and now lets add some complexity following the above algorithm. I changed password to "p@$sw0rD* and now you have a pretty beefy 10-character password that would take any brute-force attempt something like 500 years to complete. Yeah, I don't think a hacker has the patience to wait that long, but you get my point! :)

Setting up a Home VPN
- Not to be confused with anonymous web surfing services. With a VPN, you wont need your RDP box publicly facing, therefore you are safe from brute-force attacks. However, any computer that you want to use to access your Remote PC will need to be connected to your VPN. If you forget to disconnect or anything like that, you will be subject to attack by your own negligence.

IP/MAC Filtering
- At your router level, only allow access to certain IP and/or mac addresses.

There a few more avenues for additional layers of security, but the above are the easiest to setup.
