I just have found an interesting article about 'How to protect ourselves from hackers'. It is available here:

http://blog.hotspotshield.com/2013/08/08/how-to-protect-yourself-from-ha...

One quote from the article:

"According to the Trustwave’s 2013 Global Security Report, cyber-security threats are increasing as quickly as we can implement measures against them. Hackers have lots of different ways to steal your private data and information. And the main reason why hackers go after your personal information is identity theft!

Over the past year, there have been roughly 12.6 million victims of identity theft – or, to put it into perspective, one victim every three seconds. No matter how safe you think you’re being online, chances are you’re making at least a few mistakes that compromise the integrity of your personal information."

About Hotspot Shield:

"Hotspot Shield VPN is the ultimate Internet security solution that secures your browsing session, detects and blocks malware, protects your privacy and allows you to access blocked sites. Hotspot Shield is available both as a free VPN and a paid Hotspot Shield Elite subscription.

Key Benefits to using Hotspot Shield:

- Secure your web session, data, online shopping, and personal information online with HTTPS encryption.

- Protect yourself from identity theft online.

- Secure your IP address for your privacy online and private browsing.

- Access all content privately without censorship; bypass firewalls.

- Protect yourself from snoopers at Wi-Fi hotspots, hotels, airports and corporate offices.

- VPN client works on both wireless and wired connections. Provides Unlimited Bandwidth. [!!]

- Works on PC and Mac, including new operating systems (Windows 8 and Mountain Lion)."

Even if their product has received many awards - including from CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Business Week Intl. -, I would like that the editor of this rubric to test the FREE version of Hotspot Shield; and then, to tell us his opinion about the program.-

For those tempted to use TOR:

"Snoops can identify Tor users given enough time, experts say"

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/09/snoops-can-identify-tor-users-gi...

A recent academic paper shows “that Tor faces even greater risks from traffic correlation than previous studies suggested.” In other words, one of the world's best tools for keeping online speech anonymous is at risk in a previously known—but now even clearer—fashion...

It seems there is a lot of contradictory info going around. As has been noted elsewhere, there isn't any body to consistently benchmark and evaluate the VPNs according to speed, logging, anonymity etc.

Here's another article I've found with different info again about Hotspot Shield. The upshot is no, probably not the most trustworthy one out there and not the most anonymous. In cahoots with google according to this http://howtodoit.eu/learn-how-to-install-and-use-hotspot-shield-vpn-soft...

It stuffs up -well not IT exactly, but google- stuff up gmail in the email client, because of their infuriatingly intrusive geolocation login validation 4rsholery. Apparently doesn't work with Bittorrent. therefore those who also don't really need it for general surfing may judge it not much use.

I wonder whether more voracious reading of user comments will elucidate things or whether there's just a whole tangle of misinformation out there.

I *love* your reviews: Detailed, broad coverage and, most importantly, unequivocal and expertly opinionated. You saved me an hour of headaches and a bottle of aspirin re-re-researching the state of VPNs today.

SecurityKiss is my (current) VPN of choice based on their adequate server facilities in my locale, unlimited/unthrottled bandwidth, the simplicity and elegance of their GUI and ease of configuration. I'll stick with them for now, not the least because of this review.

Thank you and all the excellent Commenters. Gushing finished.

Hello guys.Yes i'm quiet interested too in stealth surfing;and the best about my personal view is spotflux.Spotflux vpn is an absolutely free vpn at 0 coast.Fast and reliable with a bith of installing problem with the older version. The new release is quiet reliable and change tour ip adress immediately and you are encripted.Very good.To give an eample like to watch HULU.com tv outside the US is impossible but with spotflux you get doesn,t matter where you are.Like a lot of you guys i tried a lot vpn software, but mainly i.have been unsutisfied.

To Predator 00728,

I wish to thank you for your suggestion of Spotflux. I have been playing with VPN's and proxy servers for six months now. I have used every VPN on this review page, plus others that are not here at one time or the other, but ended up deleting them for one reason or the other. Spotflux is the only one that has meet all of my criteria for what I want in a VPN.

I now have what I consider to be a perfect setup for me. I have Squid 2.7 for cache catching, and blocking HTTP_headers. I have Privoxy and AdblockPlus for blocking ads. Now thanks to you Predator, I have added the final piece of the puzzle, which is Spotflux, that changes my IP address. All of this for FREE !!

I wish to also thank the editor of this page for all of his hard work. There are some real good VPN's reviewed on this page, that can meet a lot of the needs of the readers of this page. Thank you all !!

I been using SecurityKiss for the past months but then last week something weird happened - I am automatically disconnected every unknown minutes, even though I am connected to the internet. And this morning, as I am using the service, it always disconnect, thus, risking my connection. What is happening to SecurityKiss?

For now, I am using Tor Browser Bundle (as I write this). And I did not find any problem with this. As for the speed, it is okay (beyond medium, with the fact that I am using broadband). This Tor is promising.

My suggestion: Please update this, because some of the programs are updated - like Cyberghost which is in 5.*, SecurityKiss is i 0.3.0 and Tor Browser Bundle which is 3.6.

Anyway, thank you for the list. Keep up the good work. :)

Chris PC I haven't tried for a few years but this may be useful:

If you are going to install it, check the Privacy Agreement and see if you are about to accept a company called "Relevant Knowledge" is going to be allowed to track and retain every site you surf.

If you have installed it and review the above and decide to uninstall it, after you have uninstalled it, go to Windows Services and see if there's a programme called "Relevant Knowledge" set to "automatic" (automatically load on boot). If there is, set it to "disabled".

Of course they may not still do this or the name may have changed but worth looking.

I thought it a bit odd for an anonymous surfing proxy to be recording every site I surfed.

It offers numerous advantages like:-
1. Security and safety.
2. Protect data from hacker.

So, if your in planning to have the secure system you must always go for such kind of software.

Best Free Anonymous Surfing Services 5 years 7 months ago Ratzo An interesting note from Securitykiss PPTP discontinued 2014-12-17 We knew for a long time that the PPTP connection method was very broken and since Snowden it was known that PPTP had been compromised by the NSA. In SecurityKISS we kept the PPTP service running because it was easiest to set up on mobile phones and tablets. We were warning users that they should not expect confidentiality from PPTP. It was targetted at users who needed to change their IP address for video streaming and where confidentiality was not of paramount importance. There is an old saying in the security world: "there is always a tradeoff between security and convenience". We believe we were standing too long on the wrong side of that tradeoff and today we concluded that the warning is not enough so we decided to discontinue PPTP service in SecurityKISS view

As I am far from being an expert of VPNs, I have a simple question...

It is said that many VPN suppliers collects informations about you. Is that possible to conceal our true IP to a VPN supplier by using, beside the VPN itself, a software which has for unique task to change our IP ?

If these two softwares (VPN and IP hider) may work together, will the IP hider software change my IP between my computer and the VPN supplier or will it change the IP that the VPN supplier creates to hide my real IP ?

Please, I would like that nobody tells me that the VPN is supplying a new IP and that I don't need a IP hider, that is not the question here.

I have done both computer hardware and software design since 1985. Owning my own computer company for a couple decades has filled my retirement years with opportunities to work for the greater good in computers which is all done free of charge. I'm looking for some animation software which is not to expensive where I can make minor changes to photos and create gif animation files. I could use my Adobe Account to get what I need but I've given them enough over the years. I did 10 solid years in software design so I might have time to work on projects here but my community service work comes first. I need no income, life has been good to me. I'm not saying I won't help but I'm not looking for a job either.

I had no idea what to write here so I just like it is.

FYI
MS GIF Animator comes from Softronic which includes this in their EULA:

"In addition, a toolbar will be offered, and it shall change the User’s home page, default search settings and 404 error traffic, in the event the User selects such options."

The install option is set by default to install and includes this paragraph:

"By choosing to install and automatically enable the appbario19 Toolbar and SearchProtect in your web browser and set the search features you agree to these products’ terms, license agreements, and privacy policies. I also agree to the Value Apps terms and privacy policies, which may include third-party apps that may access, collect, and use your personal data, including your IP address and the address and content of web pages you visit. Hi! I read through the products...and er, wondering if there is any features that you didn't list that includes animating by dragging the mouse around while the program records your movements?

Like, you drew a happy face, then select happy face, and press record, and you move the happy face around with your mouse to make it dance. then hit Stop Recording and you can play back the animation.

Do any of the programs you listed do that? Yeah I saw the features listed, but maybe it wasn't important enough to mention? Just checking :D

Because I've been searching for the past 2 days looking for such a program. I remember I had such a program many many years ago (when I was using the new Windows XP system). For the life of me, I can't remember the name or what the interface looked like.

It may not even be an animated gif program. I'm desperately going around the internet asking people now. Thanks if you or any of the users here know of a program that can do this type of mouse-recorded animation! :)

There's a game... I think it's called 3D Cats or 3D Flying Cats.... it's pretty addictive too but is a battery drainer. The cat meoows when you crash sometimes growls a bit, actumy feel bad for smashing his rocket into a wall.

Es file explorer is universally the best file manager in terms of simplicity and options. Have used it on both HTC and Samsung.

SuperSU is better than Superuser IMHO especially now with the new updates.

Google Drive is awesome for storage space and versatility as you can open and create virtually anything using docs without having to install office software. Kingston Office I think its called is an amazing free office manager of you want one.

Titanium Backup and My Backup are great apk and data tools. My SMS backup is handy too.

This listing of Android apps is superb, as always, but I'd like to add a small note of caution about Ringdroid. It's a great program and works well, but when I repeatedly found icons for gambling and other unwanted applications on my home screen, I finally tracked down Ringdroid as the source. As a result, I uninstalled it, as I don't need to create ringtones regularly, and I can always reinstall it briefly if I want to create a ringtone, then uninstall it again.

If anyone has reliable information that this problem is no longer happening with Ringdroid, that would be good to know, but until that is known for sure, users should be aware that Ringdroid may install all kinds of junk apps on their phones.

view
Best Free Android Apps - Updated 2020 7 years 5 months ago Jojoyee Thanks for the feedback Yankiwi. So far I've not experienced unwanted app icons on the home screen resulted from Ringdroid. Check if you have installed Ringdroid developed by Ringdroid Team or the Social Edition by another developer, and if you have installed the app directly from the Play Store. According to the developer, Ringdroid is an open-source project and it does not contain ads. You may also email the developer to find out more. view
Best Free Android Apps - Updated 2020 7 years 5 months ago Yankiwi

Hi, Jojoyee,

Thanks for the info. I've never downloaded any app from any source other than the Google Play Store, so I'm sure it was that version of Ringdroid. I scanned with AirPush Detector, which found that Ringdroid contained AirPush, because I'd noticed occasional app icons on my home pages ("Slotto" and others). The unwanted app icons would only appear occasionally while I had Ringdroid installed, but they have never appeared since I uninstalled Ringdroid.

As I said, I really liked Ringdroid; it's a great program, does what it says it will do, and does it well, but until I'm sure that it's not going to load junk onto my phone, I'll only install it long enough to create a ringtone (which I rarely do), then immediately uninstall it. However, if others have better or newer information to the contrary, I'll be glad to hear it.

hi yankiwi, i think you may find that you have downloaded a knock off copy of ringdroid from google play. it is called ringdroid (social edition) by song qinglin. a while ago i did the same as ringdroid had not developed their most excellent app for ice cream sandwich/jellybean at the time i needed it. it did exactly the same things as you have detailed..crap dropped all over my screens from airpush. i finally tracked this down with the excellent dr. web. as far as i know & have experienced ringdroid has never done what you have detailed. ditch the fake app & get the real thing. as you stated it is a great app.

Hi, mjuice7,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I just went to Google Play and checked out both Ringdroid apps. After reading them both, I'm quite certain that I had the one from the Ringdroid Team, and for three reasons:

1) Because of the obvious difference in the two icons (I'd never before seen the blue and white emblem in the "Social Edition" icon);
2) Because I've never heard of "song ginglin," but seem to remember reading something about the "Ringdroid Team" before; and finally (and most important),
3) Because I am cheerfully "anti-social" and heartily detest Facebook, Twitter, and all other annoying forms of "social media" or anything that even remotely smacks of that, so I would never download the "social edition" of anything!

Ringdroid is indeed a great app, but for now I'll play it safe and leave it off my phone unless I have a reason to load it in order to create a specific ringtone. I hope others enjoy it and find it "AirPush-free."

Thanks again for your post.

Hi, mr6n8,

Thanks for your post, but I understood that difference. I was simply trying to use that difference to explain to the previous poster that one of the reasons that I knew that I had downloaded the original Ringdroid app and had NOT installed the "social edition" version from the alternate developer was that I had NOT seen that additional blue and white emblem before. Just to be sure I'm being clear, the Ringdroid I downloaded was the original Ringdroid with the icon that had only the reddish note and yellow scissors you described and did NOT have the additional blue and white emblem.

I hope this clears up any misunderstanding.

Cheers

I have installed and used it on Samsung Note 2, and it is a rock solid stable app to lock any or all apps you chose
I have no affiliation with this program

May I suggest to add Viber to the Best Free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for Android list? I know it had some ups and downs along the time, but the newer versions have improved the voice quality a lot and they have finally launched the desktop app that works pretty well too.

Best Free Android Apps - Updated 2020 7 years 2 months ago Jojo Yee Certainly yes Av_Crazy, you have been one of the great contributors to recommending good apps including this list. And yes the Holo theme design introduced since Android 4.0 ICS is a good trend for better cohesion between all apps on the Android OS and I believe more apps will adapt to it soon. I'll look into those that you've specifically recommended. The Evernote icon has now been fixed. view

I have not seen any reference to Android Lost
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost

It's the best, most simple, cool featured security app I have seen.

Not only can I lock my phone remotely (from pc or other phone), I can remotely unlock it, erase data, send it a message, make it sound a loud siren, have it take a picture, have it display a message like "low battery warning" when the OK is pressed it snaps a picture and sends it to me... If stolen, I now have a photo of the bad guy/gal and also can get the GPS co-ordinates...

Lots of other features too, very useful, very simple app. I just love it. Best security app I found.

Highly recommend the game for Android called 'Bottle Crash'
Have had the app on my Note 2 for 3 months, with no problems
The best thing about this game is that the advertisements are not obvious
Many bottles flying up on the screen, and you throw ninja weapons.
Watch out for the bombs that are also thrown in front of you
Highly recommended as a test of concentration
I have no affiliation with this game

many thanks for all involved in the website - it's been a lifesaver for finding good freeware and now it's come in handy again as I get onto android (late, admittedly).

I've built up a good list of apps to add to my new device, but I did notice you're missing one important category - kid's education!

Most people seem to get tablets for kid's educational purposes, and a quick browse on Google Play indicates many many different apps for maths, language and other skills.

We're looking for good apps for kids from 3-6, so if you or others can recommend any particularly good educational apps for them it would be much appreciated.

I would recommend the app called aCalendar. It shows text in the month view on a phone better than Calendar pad does. I have used it for several months and it has always been reliable.
Thanks for this site. I have used it a lot.

Is it time for its own category, viz. Offline Navigation (GPS) Apps, ?

For example, I would like to see a comparison between OsmAnd and Copilot Live V9

360 Mobile Security is a joy to use, and it includes a very convenient Flashlight and Cache Cleaner which work very well. Maybe worth mentioning the program under these categories too?

I recently bought a Nexus 7.... I've never been crazy about the ipad and its dependence on itunes for any movies... also the ridicuously high price for an ipad here in Australia... $350 to $750 depending on the size.

Very happy so far with the Nexus 7 but I don't seem to be able to find "Adobe Flash Player" for it.
....apparently discontinued for the latest Android.

Do any of you have an alternative replacement for it ?
