Avast Free Antivirus 3 weeks 5 days ago ILoveGizmo

The free version of Avast does NOT include a firewall, but is blocking Windows Firewall from working because it is telling Windows that it is taking care of that.. I see no way to work around this so will uninstall Avast. This is a very nasty tactic to try to force you into buying the version with firewall. I also have a paid version with all bells and whistles on another more critical computer and will not be renewing my license because of this sneakiness.

I wondered the same thing, since LIFE was being published later than that. I didn't find an answer to that during my research putting the article together.

OTOH, I apparently didn't thoroughly read the Wikipedia entry, because that's when they stopped publishing weekly issues:
"Industry figures showed that some 96 percent of Life circulation went to mail subscribers, with only 4 percent coming from the more profitable newsstand sales. Gary Valk was publisher when the magazine laid off hundreds of staff. The weekly Life magazine published its last issue on December 29, 1972."

Definitely a collection worth exploring as Life magazine provided so many images that have become iconic over time. Wonder why they decided on 1972 as the cutoff date.

I do have several apps which will block things I don't want intruding on my computer and this sounds like something else that would be very worthwhile. However, my expertise is not as great as I wish it were. Can you just download and Install Trace and let it do its thing? We all need as much protection as we can get because our privacy is being stolen from us by all kinds of unlawful means and I definitely think I need this application.

5.) https://antivirusprotection.reviews/review/360-total-security/

Qihoo must have poured millions of dollars in developing this product but it is quite BAD.
1.) Poor Realtime Protection
2.) Poor phishing Detection
3.) Performance Impact
4.) Too much advertisements and Privacy issues
5.) Extra tools are overemphasized and underpowered
6.) Intrusive and interface layout stressing non-essentials.
7.) Too many false positives by 360 Cloud Engine
8.) Poor Documentation

I know that its protection can be improves by enabling those 3rd party Bitdefender and Avira engines, but tests shoes in spite of that protection is not remarkable and performance impact goes very high.

Lots of negatives, like those Extra tools when seen from view point of a PC professional are bloatware and not absolutely essential.

MY SUGGESTIONS:

1.) Have a crystal clear privacy policy
2.) Just use Bitdefender Engine by default and ditch 360 cloud engine forever.
3.) Non-intrusive and quality advertisements
4.) Improve real-time protection, program should immediately react to the presence of malware without executing them.
5.) Improve Phishing protection.
6.) Remove nonessential tools and do not emphasize them, like frequent cache cleaning and aggressive startup management.

Thanks... It has been quite a long time since I last looked at Clonezilla I will have to give the latest version a look at on one of my test systems when I get chance. Something else lacking in some of the imaging software these days is the option to re-build / replace / not replace the MBR I know that is not relevant on a GPT drive but I bet a lot of people are still using MBR drives.

The thing is with Windows 10 though you don't have much control over it when it comes to multi boot (or anything else for that matter) and the ability to create up to 128 primary partitions on one GPT drive would have been useful many years ago but I don't see a whole lot of point in the need to have dreamed up that technology these days, couple that with the fact a BIOS is not just a BIOS anymore it's very over protective of what you wish to plug into "it's" main board and if you try and force it to accept something it really does not like then that is comparable to poking a bear with a stick !

I could say that your reply is pretty much what should have been in the article ie saying "beware, some progs are closed with prompts but it's up to the user to work out what is and is not being closed gracefully".

However, for me, the program is extremely useful. I have a buggy PC (hardware issue) and have to reboot every few days. This closes the 20 odd progs I have running at a click. I appear to get notices from all progs that prompt (an old Office 2001 Excel among them), although I do do some precautionary saving before I start...like you, "not sure" LOL.

It may be my buggy PC but HD sentinel seems to resist closing.

Big thanks for this one. Been years since the last time I was introduced to a "tinkering" program that was so helpful.

Good points. The other thing I like about Clonezilla is the documentation. It's almost impossible to go wrong if you browse it first and then follow their step-by-step examples. The one possible issue for some users is the drive destination for the restore needs to be the same size or bigger than the source drive. MC - Site Manager.

I recall quite a number of years back using a mixture of Windows and Linux flavors in a multi boot environment I used Grub to boot the Windows boot loaders, so I would have a Grub menu with the Linux systems and an option to boot Windows that would load another menu to boot into the various Windows systems quite complex to set up a first but all worked fine unless Windows in it's wisdom decided to change something and that was always a nightmare to fix...

As for paying for imaging software go's many of them don't offer much extra as far as usefulness go's in the paid for versions such as the ability to reinstate / migrate an image onto a different brand of computer for example something the average user would probably only use once or twice if ever, I have always had mixed results with that and should only be used in an emergency to gain access to your data on a different computer since I found the migrated system usually starts acting abnormally after a few weeks if not sooner...

The only imaging software I have ever paid for was one of the very early versions of Norton Ghost that I used to create factory install disks with since at the time it was the most advanced and reliable in my opinion, however these days like all Norton products it's bloated beyond belief and essentially "hijacks" your system.

That's a very good point. I didn't include that information in the article because I don't know how it behaves with all or most programs that have save changes before closing prompts, and that information isn't listed on their site.
It prompts me to save changes in Microsoft Word, Notepad, and a couple of HTML editors and various other programs that I don't recall right now (I've been using Close All for some years) using the program's 'Close All' button.
The 'Terminate All' button doesn't prompt to save changes before closing open programs.
I would think that it would work in Microsoft Office programs, but since I don't use Excel often I couldn't say one way or the other, and I don't know if it works in all versions of Microsoft Office.

In other words, if I included that information in the article, and Close All closed a program without a prompt to save changes, and that program normally prompts to save changes before closing, I would be providing inaccurate information and someone could lose whatever data or project they were working on. That's not something I would want to happen.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

view
Close All Open Programs With One Click 1 month 2 days ago i8spombots

Could be very handy but the article needs to state whether you are prompted to save unsaved date/tabs or whatever on close, eg for Excel, text editors etc etc.

Without those prompts being available I would not use this....and I do see you can close programs individually but sorting through a list sorta defeats the purpose of the program IMHO

Best Free Tray Clock Replacement 1 month 2 days ago raymond4500332

In Windows 10 version 1709.16299, every time I use the Control Panel to change the clock display to show day of the week, month, day, and year (i.e. Wed 05-16-18), Windows resets it so it only shows the hour and minutes! I have done this twice and Windows insists on resetting it back to the dull default setting. Therefore, I installed the 64-bit version of DSClock on my 64-bit system, formatted it to display a two-line hour, minute, second, AM or PM on the top line and day of the week, month, day, and year on the bottom line. I set the font in white, the background in black and move in to be in front of the standard clock in the taskbar. Once locked in position, my clock display is now the way I want it, not Windows' pitifully ugly clock display.

Thank you for the update... I did actually try Veeam but was not significantly impressed enough to write a review the ability to create an image from their bootable media is negotiable mainly because how many people actually do that these days ? I know I do not anymore...

AOMIE has added a few extra features in their free download but I feel they like most imaging software are starting to loose focus by adding in more and more utilities that are yes somewhat related however it just confuses the novice user and makes the software overly complex from a programing perspective... I am a firm believer in one tool for one job the Swiss Army knife approach is all well and good in theory when your in a tight spot but for serious backup and recovery the tool / software in this case has to be specific to the task... that is just my thoughts...

In addition I noticed AOMIE has teamed up with Lenovo (also another company I forget the name off hand) to deal with factory restore / recovery of their end users computers using the OneKey recovery software... however with the Lenovo system I had in for repair the OneKey software did not carry out it's task correctly I was expecting a factory restore all it did was recover system files and bloatware and not actually remove the issues present all user data was left intact where technically it should have been wiped ! my solution, download the drivers for the system, low level format the entire HDD, reinstall Windows from an official disk and then the specific Lenovo drivers... problem solved !

Personally I have been using Macrium Reflect as of late on all my systems without problems it is far less complex now than it used to be in one respect that does concern me but it seems intelligent enough to get the recovery image re-instated correctly... though I admit I have not tried recent versions on a dual boot system that could be another matter entirely, I do not know as yet.

As stated in the first comment about Veeam Endpoint Backup the bootable disk only allows you to recover. There is no backup from bootable option available yet. I have requested that feature for a while now but as of today, there is still no backup from bootable device option.
On a side note, I have never received any SPAM messages from Veeam since signing up to download the installer.

Another note that the name has changed from Veeam Endpoint Backup to Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows FREE 2.1.

I'll take a look at Cliqz, looks interesting.
Since Waterfox forked off Firefox when Mozilla started using WebExtensions API for it's add-ons, Waterfox and Firefox quit using the same profile folder. CCleaner doesn't "see" Waterfox.
Click&Clean is a good add-on for Waterfox, it let's you selectively clear out browser history, cookies, cache, etc or clear everything all at once.

Completely agree, so much software, so little time........... :)

Microsoft has gathered data via telemetry for many years. If you want to block it, Blackbird works for Windows 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista, and O&O ShutUp10 works in Windows 10.

I don't use IE or Edge either - limited tab functions, few add-ons/extensions. Meh.

Thanx rhiannon for the info...Will check out Disconnect and keep it in mind in case I start having problems with Ghostery. Another one to watch is Microsoft gathering info, even if you check all the Do Not Track boxes. The big corporations are just sneakier in their tracking and info gathering. For example, I never use Internet Explorer anymore, yet when I clean my machine each day IE shows a full cache. Seems MS has other ways to track us. Google is everywhere and Amazon is trying to surpass the big G.

view
Facebook: What It Knows About You and How It Tracks You 1 month 1 week ago rhiannon

The shadow profiles that Facebook maintains on people who don't have a Facebook account are troubling.
Ghostery is good - I use Disconnect because I have a years long history with Ghostery of pages not loading or functioning properly when it's installed. Most people don't have any issues with it.
I haven't had any issues with pages using Disconnect over period of few years and across all browsers so I stick with it.

I'm aware that both Google and Amazon collect a lot of user data. Google in particular amasses a large amount of data on users. To date I haven't seen either of them handle user data the same way that Facebook does (Cambridge Analytica, for example). Whether it's because they handle their data differently, or they don't and it hasn't come to light so far, I don't know.

view
Facebook: What It Knows About You and How It Tracks You 1 month 1 week ago classicggma65

Sadly, those of us who do not have FB account are also tracked and the only way to see what FB has collected on us is to Sign Up for FB. They get you coming and going. Have no social site accounts and am doing very well without them. Also have Ghostery and love it. You can pick and choose who tracks you for the most part, including FB Connect, which I have found is really not an Essential as sites say it is. Do not forget that Amazon and Google also have their hooks into us...

Best Windows Freeware/Shareware Download Sites 1 month 1 week ago Australia

I have been downloading freeware since 2000
The best freeware sites that have stood the test of time, in my humble opinion, in 2018, are:

1)Softpedia
2)Majorgeeks
3)Snapfiles
4)Portableapps.com
5)Sourceforge (depending on the freeware)
6)Filehippo

Some of the other sites mentioned in this article, have had issues. One wellknown freeware site was bundling freeware with added spyware (ridiculous)

In summary, avoid these freeware download sites:
1)Freeware websites that deliberately make it hard to find the actual download link, and force you to click on junkware links
2)Freeware sites that dont make it clear which freeware is actually demoware (that you have to pay for)
3)Freeware sites that have freeware, but also a lot of demoware, and it is hard to just find the freeware without having to sort through demoware
4)Freeware websites that have downloads bundled with additional nonessential software
5)Freeware websites that include a lot of free software that is actually spyware and fails testing on virustotal.com - these sites are basically malware webpages

Over time, some previously reliable freeware sites can fail the above 5 rules, and then you avoid them forever. Once unreliable, always unreliable

Virustotal.com is your friend. Become well acquainted with it - it will tell you if a certain file is clean or very dangerous

The Best Browser-Based Screenshot Program I've Ever Used 1 month 1 week ago rhiannon

Security and privacy are on my mind often too. Browser extensions and add-ons in Firefox and Chrome have both been used as attack vectors. Google recently restructured their web store and extensions so they are tested more thoroughly, and Mozilla did the same with Firefox a while ago.

Mozilla changed the add-ons to a different structure, the add-ons no longer have the same level of access to Firefox that they previously had, which increases security, and is one of the reasons that so many of the legacy extensions can't be ported over to the new format.

That said, I've been using this particular add-on/extension in Firefox and Chrome based browsers for a long time. At least a few years that I'm sure of, with no issues.

As I understand it, the security flaw creates a vulnerability in a PC, not in the zip files themselves. The security flaw "could install programs on your PC, view, edit, or delete data, or create new user accounts with full access rights".

As long as you are using the newest version you should be ok.

On the verge of installing, came the realization that nowhere in your long piece was there a discussion of the security and privacy concerns of a browser based capture process. That is not to say anything about this particular extension. But security should always be the first concern before convenience and utility. And being browser based, it leaves me wondering if we are just punching another hole in the patched up sieves that are our browsers.

Now using as a Firefox add-on, and will be using often. Easy to get going with the included YouTube link. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up! This site is one of the first places I check each morning for interesting and valuable information, both in the articles and in the comments (thanks, "Australia").

Does this mean that even if I update my version of 7zip, and someone uses an old compromised version to send me a file, when I use my clean version to unzip the file my computer will be infected? Obviously I will be relying upon my antivirus software to protect me, but nothing is 100% secure.

Sorry about that. I tried to search for it on TSA but got no results. It looks like Anupam's recommendation got dropped off sometime in the past ...

Thanks, Panzer. ImgV was already suggested by Anupam back in January 2013. I reviewed it at the time and my thoughts about the program then are stated here below. I've downloaded it and taken a look again but it still has exactly the same problems I saw five years ago.

This is the review of IMGV, one of the free programs suggested by readers here. In this case it was Anupam who put it forward after seeing the promising features described on its website. It's difficult for me to comment on this app because I can see the big effort that has been put into it, but unfortunately the result is disappointing.

First of all, it isn't user-friendly and switching folders is complicated; sooner or later you must use the keyboard and write the letter of the drive where they are located to reach the ones you want, like in the old days of MS DOS. There's a lack of elements such as arrow icons or mouse commands which would greatly improve browsing ease and speed. Mouse operation is confusing because you have to click and then right-click if you want some usual operations to be performed. You can specify the initial folder but just by writing its name to the corresponding option. Zooming is slow and you can't use the mouse wheel for that, just the + and - keys. It takes a long time to load the subfolders and if you have large drives with lots of them, it frequently crashes after a while. New users will need an extra effort to get used to this program because of the uncommon ways to handle normal functions.

You're quite welcome, glad to be of help. I'm glad you were able to see it after unblocking the file. I don't understand being able to view only certain parts of the file either. I'm sure someone knows, but I don't.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've only had a free Proton account for about 4.5 months but there have been no threats to upgrade to a subscription.
I gave them a donation of a few Euros to cover the couple of megabytes that I'm currently using.

Lightshot is nice for me because it's simple for me to use and I don't really need anything fancy...just shots of those pesky error msgs. Love Print Friendly, but have found a few times when it couldn't pick up articles...maybe the site was blocked for some reason. However, found that Clean Print came through for those times...that will even catch Comments which is nice since I have found quite a few comments that have helped me to understand something. PF doesn't pick up any comments.

I am on Win 7. I used the Properties to Unblock the file. I was previously able to open it and see the TOC and index, but no content in the right panel. After Unblocking, I can see the right panel as well. That's really strange. You'd think that either it could be opened completely or not at all, as opposed to partially! Thanks!

I just tried Lightshot and a few other browser based screen shot add-ons again, and I found that the Nimbus interface is simpler to use for me.
Print Friendly is awesome, I've been in the process of writing it up along with a few other add-ons that do the same thing. :)

The N opens a new tab instead of the interface every time there's an update to the extension or when just installed.

To find the version of Nimbus in Chrome, go to Menu/More Tools/Extensions/Nimbus/Details and the version is listed there. Similar process for Opera and Vivaldi - versions are listed in Extensions.

All good points. I would also add that performing a regular disk image with files and backing up files like Documents when needed is a good thing. Mobile users have backup options as well.

.Net installed on your D: drive? That's odd. I'm glad you let them know. You can probably download it separately and install it on your C: drive.

Thanks for the resource. I'm able to read the chm file, if you're using Windows 8.1 you can read chm files by downloading and installing this Microsoft update:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47671

For Windows 7, 8, Vista, and Server 2008 the updates that let you read chm files are here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/917607/error-opening-help-in-wi...

But before you run any updates right click on the file, choose Properties, and make sure it's unblocked. They seem to be blocked by default. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
