VideoPad Video Editor 4 weeks 1 day ago ichabod

Thank you for that info. On that page, the "Free Version for Home Use" box has a "VideoPad Free for Windows" link to the "vpsetup.exe" file. However, above that on the page is a bold graphic with a "download now" button that gives the "vppsetup.exe" file; that's what I had previously and is the trial/demo version. Today, after uninstalling the "vppsetup.exe" version, I installed the "vpsetup.exe" version--but with a huge catch: The program opened with a dialog saying that since I'd already used an expired trial version, I'd have to either buy a license or make this the "lite" version; when I chose the latter, it behaved like the expired trial version and would not save any new changes to a video file.

Mesh or another Gizmo editor needs to update their download links for desktop installations, because they currently link to the paid version. And, unless my experience was abnormal, the product review should caution people about using the trial version if they are likely to switch to the free version on the same device.

On 11/4/17, I installed VideoPad 5.11 and thought that it was the free version. I got the "Certify" prompt each time I opened it. I used it then to learn its features, but don't recall if I saved any video files at that time. Today I tried to save a video file and it said that that was a paid feature.

Check If Your PC Is Vulnerable To Spectre And Meltdown 1 month 13 hours ago Australia

Installation of patches, (including for Spectre and Meltdown), often has unintended problems, including potentially significant hardware and software performance issues
Using the Meltdown and Spectre patches, it is a fact that users have documented performance drops, and it is a fact that some computers have been rendered unbootable.

It is also a fact, that Intel is recommending in January 2018 - not to apply the Meltdown and Spectre patches

From the official Intel webpage "Intel Newsroom": We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior
(Google: "Root Cause of Reboot Issue Identified")

Now you can see the reason I recommended holding off applying these patches.

When did we accept "software patches" (aka firmware updates) as acceptable. Nothing less than a full refund or a hardware replacement with a proper functioning processor is acceptable. The affected Intel and AMD processor parts are sold but are not fit for purpose

Check If Your PC Is Vulnerable To Spectre And Meltdown 1 month 1 day ago gizmo.richards The Gibson website explains the gray buttons in their Q & A: " Either of the Protection Enable/Disable buttons will be disabled when the button's respective vulnerability cannot be enabled or disabled by its user. For example, Since AMD processors have never been subject to the Meltdown vulnerability, the Meltdown button will be disabled because there's no way for its protection to be disabled. This would also be true (in the other direction) when a system has an Intel processor and any version of Windows that has not been updated for the Meltdown vulnerability. In that case the system is vulnerable and there's no way for the button to make it invulnerable. Similarly, any computer whose firmware has not been updated will be vulnerable to Spectre attacks and, again, the button cannot make it invulnerable. So, InSpectre will enable those buttons when the system's conditions allow the operating system to protect against the respective vulnerability, but the user may wish to disable that protection, where possible" view

I am bewildered, it downloaded OK and worked Fine, but I just cannot understand the results, it tells me "This system's hardware has not been updated with new features required to allow its operating system to protect against the Spectre vulnerabilities and/or to minimize their impact upon the system's performance. (Protection from the Meltdown vulnerability does not require BIOS or processor updates.)"
Then gives me the option to "Disable meltdown protection"
Its all beyond me I'm afraid, I wish Geeks could talk to idiots like me in plain English

Im am interested in a really free customizable "Keyboard", a board with keys.
But with free customizable buttons (text and graphic) over the whole Touchscreen.

I would use it as a big comfortable an flexible video exiting keyboard.
Every free customizable button needs a free customizable shortcut.
This touchscreen monitor I would use for video editing, flat on the desktop (in front of the monitor).

Quite obvious for some mature and drooping sunflowers shown in the wallpaper :)

Ran InSpectre tool and it confirmed the Microsoft patch was installed and my PC was not vulnerable to Meltdown plus confirmed my speed was not adversely impacted by the MS patch.
It did however indicate I was vulnerable to the Spectre threat requiring a BIOS update despite Intels own vulnerability tool INTEL-SA-00086 Detection Tool (the current updated version) reporting that my system was not vulnerable and my i7 X555LDB model was not included on Intels list of vulnerable models.
I wonder therefore how good InSpectre is in detecting specific models which are vulnerable as in my case it appears to have come up with a false positive?
In any event probably 99% of the World's computer users have never even heard of this vulnerbility and most wouldn't have the savvy to update the BIOS anyway so I would have thought a more practical solution would be to stop the as yet non-existent Spectre and Meltdown malware from getting on to computers in the first place.

Answers to most of the questions people normally ask can be found on the very informative What3Words General Questions page at:
https://support.what3words.com/hc/en-us/categories/200511181-General-Questions

Just click on the red link that says "See all 29 articles" and you'll find lots of info.

Seems like a profoundly useful idea, not only in rural/unmapped areas, but also in large convention centers, office complexes, apartment complexes, or theme parks. I'm not surprised that various corporations which require precise geolocation are using it.

It seems to me that the folks who dreamed up this system and created the W3W algorithm clearly had waaay too much time on their hands, but overall I think it's quite clever.

Best Free Trojan Horse Scanning And Removal Software 1 month 5 days ago MidnightCowboy According to their website, the paid version enjoys "Important and high-priority updates" over the free version which has a red cross against this feature. IMO this makes the free version all but useless as any of the major AV's will identify pretty much all known malware and something designed to detect new malware cannot deliver with restricted updates. MC - Site Manager. view

I'm not sure about that. I thought the only difference between ZAM Free and Paid is that the former doesn't have real-time (+Pandora) protection and automatic scan scheduling.

I've been very impressed with Zemana AntiMalware Free on demand scanner. Quicker scans than Malwarebytes AntiMalware and better detection. Haven't used Emisoft for a long time so not in a position to compare it against Zemana, but I would have Zemana ahead of Malwarebytes at the very least.

Best Free Trojan Horse Scanning And Removal Software 1 month 5 days ago torres-no-tan-m...

I'm afraid I've come to the party a tad late!

I have just tried Zemana, the portable version, on my system. It's offering real-time protection during the 15 day trial, after which this facility is removed. It took approx 3 minutes to update the vrus definitions and the same time to run a Smart Scan. Under Settings, I ticked Pandors cloud-sandbox technology prior to scanning; however, I wouldn't recommend doing so because it increases the risk of false +ves. Zemana 'detected' Suspicious Browser Settings and by default the items were selected for repair: I excluded the aforementioned and continued the scan without Pandora enabled.

The GUI is straightforward and easy to navigate; I think I might be keeping the portable version just for a second opinion, but I will still continue to use Virus Total on my PC when installing new software.

view
Best Free Trojan Horse Scanning And Removal Software 1 month 5 days ago George.J

Each has their own strong points.

Zemana is slightly better at detecting zero-day malware than MBAM but at the cost of more false positives from my own experiences. It's multi-engine AM uses Kaspersky, Bitdefender, AVG, ESET, Avira and it's own in house engines. It started as a clone of Hitman Pro but is now a good stand-alone product by itself. Zemana also has a portable version and is seemingly lighter during scanning than MBAM with a pleasant interface.

The removal capabilities of MBAM with it's Chameleon's engine seems stronger though but ZAM is growing rapidly. MBAM is better at rootkit detections and PUP's which is it's strongest selling point. My only gripe with ZAM is that since it's cloud-based it means you got to run it with internet connection enabled.

view
Best Free Trojan Horse Scanning And Removal Software 1 month 5 days ago biggerabalone

i have followed zemana and have its lifetime license. it started out with the multi engines in the beta. afterwards, there were some changes in the product, such as, you couldn't select which engines to use. finally, all the engines disappeared and there is no longer any mention of them. i suspect they purchased the signatures/engine rights for a time, garnered a following with that as an excellent marketing tool, and when they had enough users, dumped the extra engines when it was time for renewal. i'm not sure, but i wouldn't trust that it has multi-engines at this point.

It has never installed a 64 bit app for me in all of the years I have tried it. I'll give it another try on a fresh 64 bit install later today, but I seriously doubt that anything has changed since November when I last tried it. But even if by some miracle it does work, I would still need to run PatchMyPc after that to install the many apps Ninite doesn't have so it still isn't that useful to me. Ninite doesn't add new apps and hasn't for the past several years. PatchMyPc has at least twice the apps and doesn't require one to download a customized installer. You download the base file ONE TIME, then check the apps you want to install, and let it do it's thing. You can update the apps that are already installed and select new ones to install during the same pass without going to Ninite to download a new installer. It also let's you halt updates on selected apps in the free version, something that Ninite does NOT do (requires the Pro version that costs money).

Sorry, but there are way too many reasons why Ninite isn't as useful these days to make it worth the truble.

view
AVG Free Antivirus Gets A Smart New Look 1 month 1 week ago jmjsquared

I'll say what Rob and MC are too busy or too polite to say. YOU are wrong --loudly and undeservedly offensively wrong.

First, "Potentially Unwanted Programs" MAY BE just that, "potentially unwanted". Some 'security' programs flag other programs -- security-related and otherwise-- that THEY have unilaterally determined to be "potentially unwanted" only to alert the user who, then, can make his/her own decision whether the subject is "wanted" or not. For example, the Chrome browser extension offered with Avast!'s and AVG's installers IS WANTED by many users while NOT WANTED by others and, in any event, is prominently identified as "optional" by those installers. The user can choose for him/herSELF.

Second, One of your so-called "better clean-up program[s]", namely Malwarebytes (MWB), recently, itself, has become a "potentially unwanted program" that flags so very many useful, legitimate programs as PUPs or, even as malware, that I no longer treat its findings as reliable on-their-face. It appears that MWB intentionally flags competitors' products as PUPs or malware in an insidious marketing ploy to disadvantage them. And, to add insult to injury, since going commercial, MWB has gotten so much heavier-and-heavier on system resources that I, a life-time multiple-licensee, disable it except for the periodic scan whose results I have to go through with a fine-toothed comb.

In short, no one security program is better than all others in every instance and, therefore, should not be used as THE benchmark in always assessing all others.

Finally, to answer your polemical question: No, I do not sense any slippery, downward slope here at GIZMO's Place. I suspect almost no other fair-minded, well-informed and truly experienced computer user who finds his/her way here does either. Your assertion otherwise is just another one of those Probably Unwarranted Opinions littering the Internet.

Happy New Year, anyway.

It's alright to be critical of the review, but please do not do so with offending words. This is a site run by volunteers who dedicate their time for free. If you have any problems with the review, please point them out, and we would have happy to correct, or respond. But, please do not use bad language.

Now, about FreeFileSync, yes, there is a third party software being offered during the install, and that is the unwanted component, and that is why a caution notice has been included in the review. To you, who has knowledge of these things, it might seem like a small thing... but to a general user, who isnt aware of these things, and who will just hit the Next button without looking at what was on the screen, it's our duty to make them aware of this unwanted component.

So your criticism here is unwarranted, and your offending language uncalled for.

Next time, we won't reply to such a comment... it will simply be taken out.

I am shocked - but bot surprised. How so?

Three to five AVG modules are recognized as PuPs and removed by every better clean-up program I know and regularly use. Just yesterday I delivered an originally badly messed up computer back to a customer and showed the log files of above mentioned clean-up programs to the lady. AVG were numerically among the most numerous things that showed up. And that machine is no exception.

And to name names here: The clean-up programs I refer to are JRT, Adw-Cleaner and Malwarebytes Free.

I really take issue with even still writing about AVG - and then in a place like Gizmo's Freeware that so many people have over years learned to trust.

Anybody else sensing the slippery (down-)slope ahead?

It would be good to note the comments at tomsguide.com on antivirus about the merger of AVG and Avast and the differences now between the two. It appears that Avast might be the better choice given recent developments. Please correct me if I am in error.

really ? which components are you referring to ? there was one checkbox that i unchecked. is that really a risk that warrants Caution! ? NOT; duh.

i'm the person who is most likely to be critical, but now i'm being critical of this b.s. review. this review was spot on with respect to the rating. and maybe another detail. and that's about it

there is plenty of help by way of walkthroughs from youtube. the links to the videos are right there on their homepage. there isn't an issue here with help or the learning curve. did you watch the videos ?

this program does preserve the original date and time. you are talking about freefilesync, and not some other program, right ? what version are you using ? i'm using freefilesync 9.6 and have no issues at all. i've just started using it, but this problem that you are having is not an issue with version 9.6

This got me thinking of a terrific documentary I saw a few days ago about Johnny Carson. At the very end he does his Amazing Carnak bit. He holds the card to his head and says "Sis boom bah". There is a pause as he looks out at the audience and then he delivers the punch line....."describe the sound made by a sheep when it explodes".

One word: Android. Customize it, hack it, root it to your heart's content at 1/3 the price. Apple is for rich kids.

Perfectly put! After one of my tablets got completely hosed by the last win10 update, I said the hell with it and disabled automatic updates. Updates break more than they fix imo. I'll take my chances and be careful where I go.

As far as I know, those older versions can be free. They are still for sale at a lower price and they have a 30-day trial that will downgrade to the free reduced version once this period is over. That applies to ZPS18, reviewed here.

This tool helps you find adjectives for things (nouns) that you're trying to describe. 'Stalwart' is not a noun.
For non-nouns try their sister site: http://relatedwords.org/

KiltedMuskrat No results are probably because you entered an adjective, not a noun, as the initial search box requires. If you enter, for example, 'hero', stalwart will be one of the adjectives in the search results and then you can click stalwart and get this in a popup box :
1. a person who is loyal to their allegiance (especially in times of revolt)
2. used especially of persons
3. dependable
The popup also has an option to search for related words, and there is an extensive list of related words for stalwart.

You could also go to thesaurus.com. Same thing....a list of words that mean the same thing......

While an interesting concept...I entered a perfectly normal word "stalwart" and recieved a "No Results Found" So I guess their database isn't very large.

Tips and Tricks for Linux Mint after Installation [Mint 18 - Cinnamon Edition] 1 month 2 weeks ago pretapen

Actually I found that under Administration > Update Manager > Edit there was an option to upgrade to 18.3 Sylvia
and so in terms of the necessary clicking this update was just like any other.

I have now applied that update and on reboot System Info now shows “Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit”.

Case closed.

Rev_Don, Yeah, I'm not so worried about Big Brother, or the Big Sisters (AMD, Intel, ect), or even Uncle Google, although I gripe about him some. I would gladly surrender some of my "rights" and privacy to those that work so hard for the security of our Nation. I don't think 911 was a "theory". Yet. Nor do I think it's over. Yet.

I have to wonder if in view of the long history of this same "bug" being installed in the CPU's of so many manufacturers if this isn't a back-door or keyhole that was intentionally installed for security (as in NATIONAL) or counter-intelligence purposes. I'm not a "conspiracy theory" freak, in fact, if this is the case, I'd be very upset that this "bug" is outed and in such a way as to make the CPU makers look bad for doing something to help keep our nation safe.

Could this be a possibility??

Thanks. Can I upgrade to 18.3 without 'starting from scratch' with that huge download ?
