Wallpaper of the Week: Triangular Concrete Structure 2 weeks 23 hours ago rhiannon

Thank you for finding out what the structure is. It looked like concrete to me in the black and white version, but it could easily be metal. :)
I didn't see the sepia version. I like both equally well.

After a little research, it's an image of a structure (in Armenia) to break up the force of a raging river.
Personally, I think it looks better in sepia. The metal seems to pop a bit better.

Anupam, Tracker Software have not removed mention of PDF-XChange Editor.

You will still find it with a web search as the text on the website has not changed (https://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads/enduser/pdf-xchange-editor):

The smallest, fastest, most feature-rich FREE PDF editor/viewer available!

Around 85% of the features require no license to use.

Approx 15% of the advanced features which are clearly identified will place a trial watermark on output if used without a license

The list of free features also remains (https://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor#free-product-features).

Google Launches New Dataset Search Engine 2 weeks 3 days ago rhiannon

It searches datasets exclusively. Search engines don't index everything on the internet - thus the creation of specialty search engines such as Google Scholar, Springer, BASE, FOIA.gov, VADLO, CiteSeerx, the Icon Archive, Kaggle, refseek, Academic Index, etc.

Run a search in a standard search engine for boston education or "boston AND education".
A wide variety of returns appears, depending on the search engine, most of which are not useful if you're looking for data/datasets. Pioneers Happy Hour announcement, a Forbes article on Paul English, a pdf from Northeast Insurance Agency, and a CNN article on school gardens are not what I would want if I were looking for data/datasets on boston education.

Search Dataset for the same "boston AND education" without quotes, and it returns two datasets. Remove the operator AND, and more datasets are listed. These may not be exactly what I'm looking for, but are much closer to what I'm seeking.
(Using quotation marks in Dataset returns a "boston AND education" - did not match any datasets" message).

view
Google Launches New Dataset Search Engine 2 weeks 3 days ago lanshark

So Google's Dataset Search can find a set of docs relating to "Boston education". A regular ol' Boolean search should find any docs that have "Boston AND education" as index terms, no matter where the docs are, and those docs are the "data". So how is Google's Dataset Search an improvement?

'Find Album Info' Not Working In Windows Media Player? Try This 2 weeks 5 days ago Peter Blaise

.
Just carefully inspect the Options for any music program and make sure it's default directories are the same.

Even Apple iTunes ... and VLC and MusicBrainz Picard and Zortam MP3 Media Studio and Media Monkey and others ... will leave music in the same folder as Windows Media Player, and all these programs will just present the music files as found -- or collect and reorganize them if that's your goal -- and these various programs will either inherit each other's fixes that have been applied to your music files if you make any changes, or if you let them make any changes to your music files, or they may try to refix anything that they disagree with each other on, so also inspect all Options and play with choices for what any program should do regarding moving files, perhaps by Rip settings or when played or when saved with new or updated tags, art, and lyrics.

You da boss, there's no "right" or "wrong" way, only find YOUR way.

Try adding THIS line to your hosts file:

23.48.39.50 musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com

... since 23.48.39.50 is the IP address of redir.metaservices.microsoft.com, and THAT line above may fool Windows Media Player to look at Microsoft instead of XBoxLive for Lookup Album Information.
.
Also, inspect your hosts file for other entries that may compete and ## comment them out.
.

view
'Find Album Info' Not Working In Windows Media Player? Try This 2 weeks 5 days ago Peter Blaise

.
[ Note: I put spaces in web addresses in my comment here to stop them from appearing as active links, so, for you to use them, copy them and remove the spaces. ]

I found a line already in my [ C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc \ host ] file as

[ 0 . 0 . 0 . 0 redir . metaservices . microsoft . com ]

... set by SoftOrbits Anti-WebMiner v1.80 43320 -- luckily they have a comment line in my [ hosts ] file above their entries so I know who did it!

I simply commented it out with [ ## :: ;; ] at the beginning of the line -- I leave it there so that I remember it was set and don't let it happen again ... or we can just delete the line and resave [ hosts ].

Suddenly, the Windows Media Player [ Find Album Information ] feature started working again, go figure!

I did an IP lookup for the address as reported in Windows Media Player's error screen:

C:\>_ ping [ redir . metaservices . microsoft . com ] [ Enter ]

... and it came up with [ a1095 . g2 . akamai . net ] at [ 23 . 48 . 39 . 50 ], which is not the IP address as suggested in the opening article of [ 2 . 18 . 213 . 82 ].

Pinging [ 2 . 18 . 213 . 82 ] leads to [ 82 . deploy . static . akamaitechnologies . com ], for what it's worth, and I did not test it since just removing the line in my [ hosts ] file worked for me.

Letting Microsoft do their own redirection of the address called by Windows Media Player, rather than me forcing anything in my [ hosts ] file, seems the most reliable way to keep Windows Media Player features functional ...

... though we can abandon Microsoft and use MusicBrainz Picard and Zortam MP3 Music Studio and Media Monkey and a whole bunch of other programs that also have lookup-identify-and-fix for tags, art, and lyrics for music files.

In my case, running the SoftOrbits Anti-WebMiner, and running Windows Media Player, at vastly different times, denied me the direct correlation that one caused a failure in the other, my bad.

Pinging any "can't be found" web address on different computers, and especially checking the [ hosts ], file are great ideas ...

... much easier, in hindsight, than removing Windows Media Player, rebooting, reinstalling Windows Media Player, rebooting, and finding the problem still there!

Doh!

How To Get A Windows 10 Upgrade For Free 3 weeks 2 days ago Australia

If you have been involved the computing industry long enough (and most who have commented here are in that group), you would know to treat all industry press releases with due scepticism
The ultimate lesson is that Microsoft does not have your interests at heart
Of higher priority are Microsoft profit margins, and Windows 10 Enterprise customers
Subscription charges both for Windows and for Office are inevitable

With due scepticism therefore, its laughable to read this Microsoft release:
"Microsoft Managed Desktop will charge a monthly fee to configure computers running Windows 10 and keep them running smoothly as new updates are released."
But what about your existing installed software, and device drivers for older hardware that you still use ??

I can assure you, no subscription will help you when a new update renders some of your existing software or hardware nonfunctional
- there is no way that Microsoft will ever review your current installed hardware and software, and work to maintain your current setup
- there is 100% chance that future Windows updates will stop older programs and devices from working
- you know your favourite printer or software (that is no longer being updated) that was installed over 3 years ago ?
It can be irreversibly rendered nonfunctional with a new Windows 10 update

When a new Windows 10 update is released, have a read of the untold number of useless features which do not improve your productivity, but which can potentially conflict with your current hardware/software setup. Im talking Feature updates, not Security updates

Key points
- if all you do is create Office documents, browse the internet, read your email, watch audio/video, and play video games
then new Windows 10 Feature updates, dont necessarily improve your productivity over your current Windows 7/8/10 version
- paying a regular subscription to use Windows 10 will be inevitable in the future
- the industry secret is that there IS a version of Windows 10 which only receives security updates.
This is the ideal Windows 10 version to have, not the one with all the unnecessary "Feature updates"
- the Enterprise LTSB is a long-term support version of Windows 10 Enterprise released every 2 to 3 years.
It is supported with security updates for 10 years after their release, and intentionally receive no feature updates
The 2019 release of this edition is expected to be called Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC

- using the 'free' Consumer version of Microsoft means you are running the beta version
meaning Microsoft will continually update your computer to trial their latest tweaks (Feature updates)

DEMAND FROM MICROSOFT A VERSION OF WINDOWS 10 THAT ONLY HAS SECURITY UPDATES, SO YOUR CURRENT SOFTWARE SETUP IS LESS LIKELY TO BE CORRUPTED BY LESS IMPORTANT FEATURE UPDATES

Until this happens, I am quite happily running Windows 7, and I use a number of utilities to stop Microsoft from updating my computer to Windows 10

I usually disregard positives from the lesser known scanner engines. I have had to clean the computers for a company that I worked for due to ransomware. That was not fun and it was VERY time consuming. I do not wish to do it on my personal computer. Thank God that I had a daily backup available that I had set up for the company that were out of reach from the ransomware. Although I was making my living as a mechanic, I did take care of the computers for them.

H&R Block is one site you can test. It blocks pasting of passwords from the clipboard via keyboard or mouse.
It offers to generate a strong password for you. If you use it, it will generate a password and autofill both password fields. The issue I had with the password generator was that the generated password threw up the message "Password must contain at least one special character".

It would seem their password generator doesn't know it's supposed to insert a special character when generating strong passwords. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have RightToCopy installed in Chrome, and H&R will not allow right click and paste using that extension.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/righttocopy/plmcimdddlobkphnof...

If you're using Firefox, changing the clipboard events entry in about:config will unblock copy and paste in fields.
about:config > agree that you know this might void your warranty (if you haven't disabled it) > search for: dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled > double click to change the entry to false
It avoids installation of another add-on.

The only difference is that the copy and paste fields are blocked - if they were not blocked, they would behave the same way a field does. Unblocking the fieled doesn't, to the best of my knowledge, increase the standard risk of copying and pasting into a field. It's like a door - if the door is open, you can walk through it. If the door is closed, you can't walk through it. Either way, the door frame stays the same.

If you don't see the '+ Add to Chrome' blue button, you're either not in the Google web store, or you're not accessing the web store with Chrome (or any Chrome fork).

There is a slight chance that the installed versions will give a different result ? ?
Anyone who wishes to experiment with those, can find them here -

THE best portable clipboard manager is Spartan Multi-Clipboard. It is not free, but is well worth the cost due to its ease of use, customizable interface and generally great application design. I challenge anyone to try this app and compare it to their current app of choice. I have used every app listed above that is worthwhile and Spartan blows them all away. I'm very technically proficient so I don't tend to need much support, but when I do, the response times are extremely fast if that is one of your qualifications for software. Try Spartan and I don't think you'll be disappointed....

Due to small bandwidth caps and slow internet, even short YouTube videos stutter, stop and try to restart on my internet connection.
I rarely use Google Search, usually only to test something I want to write up, like adding the view image button back to Google images when it was removed recently. I'm not logged into a gmail account most of the time on any browser I use.

I have a gmail account I access with a third party email program. My main email addresses are attached to domains I own and ProtonMail. When needed I use a temporary email address.
These are all accessed through my desktop. I don't have a data plan on my cell phone - it's Android but there's no Google account associated with it and all non-essential Google services have been disabled.

That's how I use Google services. I'm neither for nor against Google. Everyone has their own level of comfort with free services like Google and Facebook, ranging from "I don't care" to "I will never use any Google/Facebook/etc service, ever". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Valuable information. Personally I have been always vigilant with the tracking capabilities of Google and their diverse “historification” engines. One has to find a compromise point between convenience and privacy.

I do not see this as black or white, I mean, every person in the world should expect theses tracking activities by using such free offerings nowadays, not only coming from Google but other companies as well.

Of course that does not invalidate one fact: if you want to remain private, don’t use Google’s services.

Transitioning from Windows to Linux is like coming out of a dark cave and seeing the light for the first time. :)

Granted any type of change involves a time investment but this is easily achieved without dual booting via a virtual install or spare machine.

Linux driver issues were mostly related to NVIDIA and wireless cards but now it is only the former that still causes any real issues but most of these have solutions in the forums.

Mail clients are as personal as browsers but Thunderbird, Evolution and Claws tend to cover most needs. Windows clients such as eM Client and others work with Linux using Wine to varying degrees.

Overall, the time you will save from Windows updates, Windows software updates, cleaning and security will be time better used on Linux.

If you let me have your machine specs I can possibly recommend some suitable distros you haven’t yet considered.

view
How To Get A Windows 10 Upgrade For Free 1 month 4 days ago rhiannon

That is a multi part answer. :)
- I haven't found a distro I really like that would make transitioning relatively seamless (I've tested 8 or so). Drivers have been an issue.
- Much of what I write here has to do with Windows or requires Windows so I can test it
- I don't like to dual boot. Some dual boot set ups have worked for me but some go south and I have to wipe the drive and reinstall from a disk image. Not hard, but time consuming
- I don't have the time and energy right now for the learning curve a new OS and the programs it runs needs
(and email.....I haven't found a Linux email client I like. Thunderbird is ok, Mailspring looks promising)

I'll move to Linux when it's time. :)

Ever since CCleaner was bought by Avast and it started to track ones usage CCleaner has had to go bye bye. This is not a good thing as CCleaner was very popular.
Always,

That makes sense. They would want the latest Windows 10 version tied to the Media Creation Tool.

That's a good point. I'm assuming you're talking about systems that come with Windows pre-installed, with a product key?
I build my own systems, so I should clarify that the older versions of Windows that I have are (valid, licensed) installation CD's that I purchased. They aren't attached to any hardware.

I installed Windows 10 on my desktop, then re-formatted the disk and did a clean install of Windows 8.1 with the disk and product key with no issues.

That said, I was able to delete a Windows 10 installation from my laptop and do a factory restore of Windows 8.1 and it worked fine.

I've used Advanced Tokens Manager to back up and restore the activation data for Windows and Microsoft Office on Windows 7 and 8.1. It may work with pre-installed systems. (I run Advanced Tokens Manager right after installation finished, and wasn't connected to the internet at the time to prevent any confusion with online activation)
Advanced Tokens Manager 3.5 RC5

Just for info, if you have an old media creation tool, it probably won't work, I tried one I had downloaded last year and I had to go to the download page and download the latest one "MediaCreationTool1803.exe". There is a EULA before the user will get to the two options

Yeah the problem is I'm pretty sure that once you activate a win 10 license those old win 7 and win 8 keys are no longer valid for install. You don't GET the option of keeping both. I still have a win 7 htpc that records my tv shows using Media Center and don't see giving it up any time soon. Ironically almost all my other computers DO run linux and have for a while now. If you have to have a few windows apps it's pretty easy to run windows in virtualbox on the linux pc with any modern hardware. There are still distro's like bodhi linux, lxle and others that will restore old hardware to new life.

I hang on to my older versions. And there's always Linux, if you don't mind the learning curve.
What I find interesting about that article is this"...the company will soon launch ‘Microsoft Managed Desktop’ which will charge a monthly fee to configure computers running Windows 10 and keep them running smoothly as new updates are released."

The wording specifies that they will configure computers, and keep them running. They've formed a new team to do this through new called the Microsoft Managed Desktop. Focused on businesses right now. That's where the fee will come in. How Microsoft will segue that into charging monthly fees to consumer level users is unknown.

It doesn't say what happens if you don't want Microsoft to configure your computer(s) and keep it running smoothly. Will it be mandatory to use the service, or can anyone opt to not allow Microsoft configure your computer?

With the recent reveal that microsoft plans to start testing monthly subscription charges "currently only for business customers"....yeah CURRENTLY....I wouldn't be so quick to give up those win 7 and 8 versions.

LastPass Not Working in Firefox? It's Not Just You 1 month 6 days ago rhiannon

Good catch. Thanks. Fixed it. If you knew how many times I proofread that you might think I couldn't read. :)

I've been using the latest updates for a bit now, sometimes it works fine, then an upgrade, then it's repeating the previous behavior. That includes a clean Firefox installation with no other add-ons. I'm keeping an eye on it.

[of course the hamburger' symbol is the set of three *horizontal* lines near the top of our browsers, unless it's been gender-modified]

With a little persistence, Lp will behave and heal itself now, mid-2018, even if it appears flawed at first.

Ed tested it out some different computers with success. After the official date the offer stopped, Microsoft kept the option open for anyone who used any of the Ease of Access tool. If you used the magnifier you qualified and got the free upgrade.
