Tried Vivaldi last night and was impressed while setting it up, most importantly because it allowed tabs on the bottom. But then... I decided I wanted a decent speed dial, so I looked for one to rival the one I use in FIrefox, and it doesn't exist, though I did find a couple that seemed moderately useful. HOWEVER, you don't appear to be able to get rid of the one that's built into the browser, and it seems both simplistic and incredibly annoying. Looking online, some people said they're "working on" being able to change it. WHAT?

view
A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago kronicmage

Just wanted to let you know that I had the same problem at first, and that I had found a workaround:

Since you're probably using a chrome extension for your speed dial dashboard, and these chrome extensions change the newtab for *chrome*, just set the new tab page in settings to chrome://newtab (by default it is vivaldi://newtab). Works great for letting me use Momentum (new tab replacement extension) in Vivaldi.

I detest smarmy, simplistic, Chrome
I like Vivaldi -
- Has Menus
- Lots of options
- A smart human chose the default settings. Perhaps they employ Analysts(which is very rare) to make decisions, instead of programmers.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention,
Rob
PS Google pays scant attention to Windows conventions with it's installers
Here is where Vivaldi (ver 1.0) installed it's EXE in my Windows XP 32bit -

I want to thank you for the tip. I was looking in "Startup," and your solution is in "Tabs." So now those people who claim that Vivaldi is working on the fix are all wet, and I almost gave up. Thanks again, all the best.

uMatrix is similar to NoScript, but has a steeper learning curve.
When I upgraded to Vivaldi 1.7 uMatrix lost some functionality, so I went back to the earlier version until they fix it.
I went from Chrome to Vivaldi when it first came out, & it is my browser of choice as it has many more options than Chrome.
I also use Firefox occasionally, & wouldn't run it without NoScript.

'have a lot of ads which pop up'?
If you have the proper extensions, you should have no ads or popups.
Depending on how you set up Vivaldi, your settings, history, bookmarks etal, are available from the panel on the left.
You'll see a bar with an arrow along the left edge & a small rectangle in the lower left corner.
left click any of these & the panel will open.
Look for the gear icon in the lower left corner & it will open the settings in a new tab or window (depending on how you set it up).

Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out (I'm in ver 1 because I use XP)
I am amazed that many people browse the web without something as protective as FF + NoScript
(For those that give it a try, and get annoyed with multiple clicks to allow scripts to run, there is a setting 'Cascade' that makes it a single click)

I have been running without any antivirus for a couple of months now (Avast was slowing things down)
The combination of FF+Noscript plus some care in my emails has kept me safe so far.
I use that XP pc 95% of the day
For really dangerous surfing I use my W10 Pro PC, with Avast enabled, and of course FF+NoScript

I'm not having much of a problem with ads with UBlock Origins, just pop-ups which are terrible. Since Vivaldi doesn't have a native pop-up blocker which one do you recommend? It's what is preventing me from making it my primary browser.

view
A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago jonny5tails

'Vivaldi doesn't have a native pop-up blocker'
Go to "vivaldi://settings/content" -similar to Chrome.
Scroll down & you'll see the pop-up blocker.
As far as extensions, I use: UBlock Origin, Disable HTML5 Autoplay, HTTPS Everywhere, LastPass, Flashcontrol, uMatrix & Privacy Badger.
uMatrix is similar to NoScript, but has finer controls with a steeper learning curve.
The latest Vivaldi update (1.7) broke the uMatrix interface & I haven't been able to find a workaround.
It might be something I'm missing in the update.
I rolled back to my earlier version.
Hope this helps :)

I wouldn't use that program either (the anti-virus). May I suggest, from a very reliable site: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/panda_cloud_antivirus.html

This one doesn't get in your way and there is a way to turn off the ads (popups).

I've been using them for several years now. But keep using VirusTotal for anything you download otherwise.

Good luck.

Google Updater.
Runs as a service, that's why you see it running all the time.
I use Process Hacker instead of Windows Task Manager, it has much more functionality.
You can stop the service & set Google Updater to manual.
Then update Chrome from the browser itself.
The closest thing to an antivirus I have is Spybot Search & Destroy & Winpatrol Pro.
I use Spyshelter Firewall (paid) & VoodooShield (free, for now).
These two programs will let you know something is trying to run (even if you are updating an installed program).
You can allow, block, quarantine or delete.
Vivaldi does have the option for a regular menu bar.
"vivaldi://settings/appearance/" -choice of Horizontal Menu or Vivaldi Button.
Hope this helps :)

vivaldi://settings/content -NOT the settings in the side pane.
did you try going to this address (copy & paste in a new tab or highlight, right click & ' Go to vivaldi://settings/content'?
As I said earlier, I rolled back to version 1.6.689.34 & it works for me there.
I didn't have 1.7 installed long enough to try it.

view
A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago Rev_Don

Nope, not there in the latest version, 1.6.689.40, or 1.6.689.34 (I haven't updated all of my computers yet). Tried vivaldi://settings/content in the address bar and it just takes me to the middle of the settings menu with no Content heading or tab.

I realise this may sound a bit lazy but very busy on the weekend with PC work & cannot afford a glitch if Vivaldi doesn't "play fair" on my PC.

So, can anyone advise if Vivaldi cures my number one peeve with a Chrome based browser, that you have to wait forever for it to open if you retain a stack of tabs's (15 odd) from the previous session? Firefox only opens held tab's when you (re)access that tab but chrome insists on accessing all tab's on the open which kills it for minutes for me. Could never find a fix just lots with the same problem.
Thanks in advance

Update, got the bookmarks working,it seems you need to double click on bookmarks to open them unless you tick a certain box.

view
A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago Rev_Don

It's not as slow as Chrome is, but there is some lag with a lot of tabs. It would also depend on what page is in the tab. I have about 9 that open and it doesn't make more than few seconds difference, but none of the tabs are video heavy (one of the things that tend to slow it down the most). I also have an ad blocker which helps a lot. The only way to know for sure is to try it with your specific set of tabs as there are just too many variables.

view
A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago Rev_Don

Tried that and there is nothing about a pop-up blocker there. I did find out how to get to it though. You need to go to chrome://settings/content, not vivaldi://settings/content. But from all indications from the Vivaldi Forums it doesn't work worth a darn. Since it shows as already enabled on all of my systems and I get constant pop-ups I'm inclined to agree with their assessment. I;ll continue to use Vivaldi for some sites where pop-ups aren;t an issue, but I'm sticking with Firefox for my main browser primarily for it's vastly superior pop-up blocker.

TAB STACKING/Grouping ! Something that if Mozilla were smart they'd incorporate in Firefox.
Another + is that from day one the devs have communicated with and responded to users suggestions at their Forum/Blog....nice 'community' there.

Thanks Rev. I've now installed Vivaldi and the ezLinkPreview extension. Exactly what I needed. Wake up Firefox!
Besides hovering over link, It puts a button (top right). When clicked, it splits the window into two panels. On the left is the website, the Right side panel shows the contents of the links you hover over in the Left panel.
Awesome! I'm sold.

FWIW

Was using a Chrome clone previously (SRWare Iron) so cannot compare it to Chrome directly, only to SRWare Iron.

That said, way faster to open (though it appears to do a lot of its work in the background as it is slow to actually appear though Task Manager shows it as running, still, as I said, "way faster" overall).

Memory management infinitely better, Iron had a memory leak, this doesn't....or if it does is very slow. With Iron I needed to reboot every 5 days to reclaim full memory - I'd get a windows has run out of memory warning.

Cons - need to learn/do a new settup & configure routine.

On initial use, though I asked for settings to be preserved on restart, my opened tabs were all gone in close and reopen of Vivaldi (used CTL H to access history and open them again as needed). So maybe install a Session Manager type extension when setting Vivaldi up if you're a tab freak. After that initial reboot it has rebooted flawlessly.

In short, thanks for the headsup on this one. It appears to be a keeper.

I only use whatsApp because some of my adult children live half way around the world, I refuse to use Messenger which was the one prior to that that they preferred to use- phew!
However from the time I knew FB acquired WA Ive been using it less and less and wanting something totally unconnected with Google, FB et al.
The trouble isnt finding one so much as trying to get family who are quite happy with the convenience and so-called encription of WhatsApp that they show little to no interest in movinng on:/
People just get lazy about actively pursuing 'safer' ( hopefully!), alternatives even though they often complain about the obvious intrusiveness etc of most of the stock IM apps.
I myself admit it becomes tedious sometimes when you finally find something that delivers on the requirements you're looking for but sooner or later gets picked up by the big multi billion $ companies and becomes just another like the rest of your blacklisted ones.
My want of my legal rights to privacy is still more important to me so I soldier on no matter what.
I just wish my family/friends werent mostly the 'bury the head in the sand' types who say that 'it's too late now anyway'. They do have a point however that doesn't take into account other very serious privacy invasion issues that we will be dealing with in the very near future!
I seriously don't see how WhatsApp can be seriously offered on techsupportalert as an alternative IM in this day and age, but that's just my opinion!

1) Thanks Rob for all of these tips about available, but little known, free programs.

2) If one checks around the web and talks to music hounds--as I have been doing for the past 12 months, foobar 2000 has a reputation for being very complicated to set up correctly and is rather high maintenance. Furthermore, many times it requires searching out and installing a special plugin in order for it to play a certain format. On the plus side it is often one of only two or three programs that can play (usually with a special plugin) certain more obscure formats such as DSD types.

Just a heads-up so others will know.

I've used Foobar2000 for years and it would take a major earthquake to get me to change. It does need some setting up and it's a bit quirky in the way it does it, but some spectacular results can be achieved. Once set up, it's definitely not high maintenance.
A few points that may be of interest:
1) As is the case with some other software packages, you may need to tell it where your copy of LAME is installed to play or rip mp3s. Ditto other codecs, such as FLAC.
2) It includes a very effective and fast ripper for any format whose codec you have installed.
3) It does play by directory, as well as by album/artist/genre/year, provided the necessary data is present in tags.
4) There is a huge range of plugins and extensions available from Hydrogenaudio. Some, like lyrics display are very simple to install and use; others are more esoteric.
5) There are a number of good android control apps available (notably FoobarCon). Once foobar is running you can control playlists etc. via your phone or tablet.
6) Windows only, sadly. I'd love a native Linux version.
7) Actively developed and supported - I think I first used it on XP and it's still going strong. Latest version 2 Nov 2015.

As long as your recognize that proceedings and conferences are not peer reviewed and should not carry the same weight as an article in a peer reviewed publication.

view
A Handy Tip To Help Find Useful Online Information 5 years 12 months ago NICKM

One thing I did learn from grad school when I got my MA: In many cases peer-review means that you must agree with the philosophy of the editorial board, or you won't get published. In many many cases this means that top-notch scholarly research with valid conclusions goes wanting. Peer-review can be indeed helpful, but you'd better understand the bias of those who sit on the editorial board. Many make the error in presuming that peer-review equals objective evaluation. Often, it is anything but.

My own impression of your post is that you do not discount presentations that are not peer-reviewed, but you feel that we should be suspicious of such publications. I would disagree - Take the presentation or paper on it's own merits and investigate on your own. Just because it's peer-reviewed, in many cases, means little. I have no ax to grind because I have never been published or turned down by various peer-review pubs. I have not tried nor do I care to be published in my field (counseling).

That's my 2 cents worth. Don't want to start a major debate or argument, just expressing my opinion...

Yes, I agree-- the limitations of the peer review process are all too prevalent in so-called 'prestigious'and objective medical journals where the editorial boards are heavily influenced and populated by employees of pharmaceutical companies. Any new or contradictory information that's not in the financial interests of Pharmaco is usually ignored, refuted or actively attacked.

I agree with zepe. Tree style tabs is The Correct Way to present this information.

There's a newer Tab Tree add-on for Firefox. It's unclear if it will continue to work after the changeover. I haven't installed it, yet, to see how it compares. The author states that it's more efficient.

I also agree that the Chrome extension is cumbersome and awkward to use. Apparently, tree style tabs used to be built into Chrome, and they took it out. And, the hooks needed to do it right in an add-on aren't there. Disappointing.

I have to say that I'm a little surprised a website like this is being touted on Gizmo's. There is no privacy policy to speak of and yes, your data is being uploaded to a complete strangers website based out of Slovakia. They also state, "We carefully use sample data from our users to test algorithm improvements." Tread very carefully with this site..

A Great Reporting Tool For Excel Power-Users 6 years 4 months ago endriju

Hello,

ExMerg author here. Your assumption regarding the commands is correct - let me explain. To provide functionalities like data merging, data are being processed on the server. Personally, I would also preffer client-side processing, but we're not yet there - web applications still have its limits. This is of course improving over time, and I really hope that future version of ExMerg will not require workbook upload.

Meanwhile, let me assure you that security is and will be top priority at ExMerg. We have no intention of threatinng the reputation of this service (which we love to develop) by any means - and as a Java developer with background from banking and corporate environments, I personally take care of the security related code.

If you would have any questions regarding the security or any other topic, feel free to contact us via our website.

Hello,

ExMerg author here. Thank you for your feedback.

The development of ExMerg is being done in Slovakia, however the service is hosted at Amazon AWS cloud. Anyway, I think that this fact should not matter from the data-safety perspective - services are being developed and hosted all round the globe, and it's really not about the location, but rather about the people behind the service.

Regarding the sample data - these are being irreversibly obfuscated before any usage in our development environment.

Best regards,

2. Few minutes ago, I read your another article - http://techsupportalert.com/content/best-photo-viewer-ive-seen-years-and...

@Neifer: I am not sure that getting aggressive or pointing at so called "lack of knowledge/experience" lead to any positive thinking. Of course we agree that we can disagree i.e differences of opinion should be encouraged, this is not my point. Moreover, I am not moderator in here and I do not want to be.
Anyhow, this being said, allow me to suggest friendly that statements like "You have any idea what you're talking about?" and others on alike tone, do not bring anything positive. In addition your English is good enough to understand the fact that questioning competence of anyone can not be considered quality arguments.

A Great Mind Game You Can Pick Up Quickly but Challenges You Forever 4 years 7 months ago jmjsquared

Nice recommendations. Thanks. Go is really lots of fun and challenging, especially for players of chess used to its "ad hominem" -based strategizing.

You're welcome jmjsquared. Indeed, knowing the master behind the game is one of the top strategies.

The grandmasters ("neural networks") behind the supercomputer AlphaGo seem very strong despite "having a problem with unexpected moves" pointed out by LeeSedol in his Match 4.

AlphaGo's record now is 9-1 after defeating European Go champion (5-0) last year and now LeeSedol (4-1).

I suspect that, inevitably, any rules-based contest between a wo/man and a sufficiently-fast, programmable calculating machine will result in a win for the machine. Only for a little while longer will humans' "unexpected moves" (a function of our limited memories, imperfect recall and limited processing power, not to mention our imagination, 'soul/spirit' , insanity) pose real problems for our machines that play games with us.

Anyway, thanks for the further info.

5KPlayer installed Apple's Bonjour service without asking if it was OK to do so. When i ran the program, I got an alert from Windows firewall, asking what types of networks it could connect through. Not happy about either of those surprises.

I would suggest a free program called Unchecky for the problem Gil encountered. Many downloads today try to sneak unwanted toolbars or extras past you so a program like Unchecky that prevents that is very useful.

I'll take a look at Unchecky. However, I'm always alert for sneakware. The installer for 5KPlayer didn't offer a "custom" install and didn't give me an option to opt in or opt out of any part of the installation (other than accepting the EULA of course).

From Wikipedia: "Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records." So, Bonjour is part of 5KPlayer's feature set. My problem with Bonjour is that it wants to run all the time as a service, whether I'm using the app that needs it or not. My experience with Bonjour is that it, like the Adobe updater task, keeps trying to reactivate itself even though I want to deny it permission to run.

If I'd known ahead of time that 5KPlayer uses Bonjour, I wouldn't have installed it.

I was mainly interested in this program for the YouTube downloading capability. When I discovered that it doesn't download in my preferred format (AVI), I uninstalled it. That's when I discovered another negative surprise: 5KPlayer grabbed all the media file associations for itself, again without asking. After I uninstalled, I discovered my mp3, ogg, flac, mp4, avi, flv, et cetera, files are now unassociated with anything. Yes, of course I can reassociate them how I want, but that should not have been necessary. I'm quite happy with MediaMonkey as my music player and VLC as my video player. New apps should not automatically grab file extensions for themselves.
