AOMEI Backupper 3 years 4 months ago BuckSkin

I recently used AOMEI Backupper to clone a working HDD in one machine onto a new larger HDD to replace a corrupted O/S in another machine; the process went off smoothly and the target machine booted right up and all programs and processes worked fine.
It took just minutes to swap out the drive and be back up and running.
If I can do it, anybody can; AOMEI is very user-friendly.

I backed up my old laptop with AOMEI Backupper - no problems. I then tried to transfer the backup to my new computer. I wiped off everything from the new computer, Windows 10 OS, files, apps - the lot. Is there any way I can recover my lost OS and other contents of my new computer - an ACER ?

I grabbed the free copy and took a look at it. Seems pretty straightforward with the exception that if you want to make a bootable clone, you have to buy the Pro version.

@AndyR: why is your preference for AOMEI? Sure, it's pretty good for free, but without the (paid) feature of managing backup schemes, it's crippled almost beyond use. [commercial references removed as per site rules]

Please: do NOT utilize it. After some usage it REQUIRES to buy the licence. Moreover during the uninstallation process (by using Revo Uninstaller Pro) I had some issues (even if I'm not fully sure it is just an AOMEI issue). Windows was not anymore able to boot. I had to restore the system to a previous Restore Point.
Finally, to fully remove it, I had to utilize Total Uninstaller with a valid license to (hopefullly) completely uninstall it (still NOT 100% sure): even if the Installation Directory was there, and I can see uninst000.exe, by double clicking on it the system says it is no there !!!
Alternatively, BEFORE installing it just google "AOMEI how to safely uninstall/delete".
Worst experience ever. Marco

There are 3 major problems with AOMEI Backupper 5.6:
- It cannot back up an Outlook PST file (this is mentioned in the manual's FAQs). So none of my emails will be backed up!
- If a backup is in progress, you can't reboot. This interrupts the shutdown after all the apps are closed, so you can't cancel the shutdown and continue. The only option is to force a hard reboot. The backup program should be capable of suspending the backup and resuming after the restart.
- The free version does not allow filters, so I can't tell it not to back up the 8GB Windows.iso file. This causes a LOT of unnecessary junk files to be backed up.

This is a great program. Just be sure to download the "lite" version which is free of any adware. There will be several choices for download, but make certain "lite" is one you download. I have used it for quite some time and never had a problem....plus it's very reliable for update info.

There are options which allow you to chose to include "Beta" if you wish. Check out the "Tools" tab and make sure you chose the ones which will accomplish what you wish to do. You can "ignore" programs if you feel they don't need to be updated -or you can "skip" updates for a week, month, etc. There is also an "Options" tab which can help you set the program up as you wish - like start with Windows, etc.

Also, if you feel an item is reported in error, you can right click it and report "error" or "Beta" if you wish. I recommend it - Kyle Katlin is very responsive to notifications of errors, etc. Thumbs up!

I believe you are incorrect. The "lite" version as opposed to the "RK" version which your are discussing above.

From the KC Softwares Site:
Download Regular installer. May contain sponsors like Relevant Knowledge and/or Somoto.
NoRK NoRK installer. Does not contain RelevantKnowledge but may contain Somoto .
Lite Lite installer. Does not contain any sponsor.
Zip Portable (Zip). Does not contain any sponsor.

I run Windows Defender, MalwareBytes Pro, HitmanPro and never have had any malware indicated from the site (in over 3 years now - Windows 7 and Windows 8). There is NO opt out in the "Lite" nor are any toolbars installed.

Please check it out and let me know if you find something else. Thanks

It is full of malware and viruses according to Avast when I installed it.

view

Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago original_steve

I'm not sure if you're replying to my post or the one that said Avast flagged it, but if extract the setup file yourself, you'll see that a file called itdownload.dll is included in the lite version and a script for Relevant Knowledge is included in the install script, regardless of what the software vendor states.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago original_steve

Just to correct Rob Schifreen's instructions, the Nork version also includes the Relevant Knowledge script and the itdownload.dll file that's in the lite version as explained here:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/another-program-check-software-n...

The only one that doesn't is the portable version and once again, we don't know what code is in the main program exe file that might phone home and download some "goodies" at a later date.

I'm surprised to hear about hitch-hikers on the Lite Version of SuMO. I have use it without incident for quite a while -- earlier, I had used the "NoRK" version, watching the install sequence very carefully.

Sumo is good, but takes a bit of getting used to. It updates almost weekly (so the install version is significant). You will get a few false positives, as well as suggested 'updates' for files embedded in other programs that are inaccessible. When I DO find an update, paranoia requires that I go directly to the program's own site.

All that said, it is an excellent program, especially when augmented with Ninite, FileHippo, and PSI.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago MoisheP

The app correctly found about a score of programs needing update, though I thought I had carefully kept my system up-to-date.
Thanks, Gizmo, for the adware warning -- the portable Zip version shows no issue on VirusTotal,MalwareBytes or Avast! BTW, all the .SPK files except your own language may be eliminated.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago JohnBurns

I am only speaking from actual use of this app - and I have not experienced what you stated when using the "Lite" version. I am not arguing with you - just stating my experience over the last 3 years backed up by MalwareBytes scans, HitmanPro Scans and Windows Defender Scans. I agree the other versions contain some undesirable toolbars and files. I will continue to use it - with my selected settings.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago George.J I don't think VirusTotal reports are helpful in this case, because the standard installer and NoRK versions shows clean for me on Virustotal Standard: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/a30f945e95d23935d2566589aff2de526aed0... NoRK: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/a7caf79c377d40fc34351dbcfc741bac0c205... Only behavioural blockers will be able to identify such adware, I think. view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago original_steve

I didn't intend for you to think that I thought you were arguing. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. My opinion of these programs is that if one is going to use them, you're better off getting a good unpacker like Universal Extractor, updating it's individual unpackers, and extracting all programs if you can. In this manner, you can remove the offending ad-ware and run the program as a portable.

My policy is if I can't extract the setup file, I don't use the program (unless it's something I've actually paid for, which is rare these days). Even if buy software, it's always free after rebate.

I tried out the portable version and was surprised at just how many apps seemed out of date, which I found odd because I do weekly checks.

So I decided to check a few against the official sites and the very first 3 that I checked all confirmed that I was using the latest versions, despite Sumo stating that there was an update for a version that the developers themselves had not released.

This raised warning signals for me to wonder whether these supposed updates are hacked and could include malware.

It's my understanding that Secunia PSI only lists updates where there is a security problem fixed, not just bugs squashed or extra program features added.

Unfortunately I have to report that Avast went apeshit during installation. Reported 55 "Threats". I installed the full version but declined the additional software. Avast kicked off at the final stage of installation. I uninstalled it immediately after it had finished installing.

I've seen the other posts about only installing the 'Lite' version and I may give that a go but KC software do state that any additional software can be "....easily rejected during installation and/or removed using Add/Remove Software control panel afterwards, independently from KC Softwares products."

I just came across this website. I found free software monitors are reviewed here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-software-update-monitor.htm
Then I found this article, which seems to add nothing to that. So why this duplicate article? What am I missing?

Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago original_steve

What you're missing is that in the comments to this article, the statement in the previous one you referred to that the "lite" version is free of ad-ware is erroneous. The author in the article on this page corrected his original recommendation to reflect that the lite version has Relevant Knowledge ad-ware after he read the comments I posted.

Here's the paragraph from the software update article you linked to:

"WARNING: Should you decide to download SUMo, please ensure that you download the "Lite" or ZIP/7z version...The full version comes with a program called Relevant Knowledge, which is detected by most security software as spyware. The "Lite" version is identical to the full version, only without the spyware, and therefore deserves to be on this list"

That part of his article is inaccurate as the lite version is packaged with Relevant Knowledge and has the same toolbar file (itdownload.dll) that's in the Nork version. For more details see http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/another-program-check-software-n...

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago Bork

If you say so. I'm not sure how well served readers are by having conflicting information on different pages of the website, by overlooking serious issues with the software, or by ignoring reputable competitors. That's why I think the reviews and comparisons are so much more valuable than promotional blurbs like this one.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago original_steve

If anything, the comments have turned the review of the program into a reason for not installing it, and if it must be used, to choose the portable zip version rather than the "lite" installer.

view
Another Program To Check For Software That Needs Updating 6 years 2 months ago Samui Ian

Further to my earlier comment regarding Avast's reaction to this program my computer has now serious startup problems. My system will not start so I have to manually close the power button and retry, second time I start I am obliged to run system repair. After doing this the SUMo desktop icon keeps reappearing despite my identifying all remnants of this program and deleting it.

My experience tells me that this program is extremely infectious and aggressive, I would advise avoiding this program at all costs.

The trouble with services like these is that all too frequently they don't work with all videos, or they suddenly stop working entirely. (For a while there were a bunch that apparently required running a local Java applet, which were kind of creepy.)

Another Great Free Survey Creation System 3 years 8 months ago oblivion

I like Limesurvey. It's more complex than most of the free offerings out there but it supports decision-based surveys (eg "ask this question only if the answer to question x was y") and can also handle groups of questions as a unit ("ask this set of questions only if the answer to question x was y".)

You can install the complete survey engine on a webserver and it's completely free; or you can develop a survey and have them host it for you -- which costs money, but the first 25 responses in any given month are free and responses beyond that still very reasonable.

Compared to trying to make complex surveys work in a basic list of questions (via page skip logic) it allows you to design a more functional and understandable structure relatively easily and also provides detailed reporting of the results. Limesurvey has a bit more of a learning curve and you need some html skills if you want to go beyond the basic templates that are already included, but the product is absolutely excellent.
