Jojo, I know I'm not supposed to waste bandwidth to thank people, but without your post I would still be without it.

I was too embarrassed to admit that I didn't have it and I didn't know what to do.
I certainly didn't want to admit it on a technical blog. A man and all that...

NOW, I HAVE IT Thanks to you. You must have read my brain waves somehow.

I wonder why it isn't checked at the factory. i also wonder why MS wants to hide extensions as well. I have mine showing because in the old days of 8.3 it was important to know.

MS "may" fix the Start button with the new 8.1 upgrade.

As soon as they came out with 8.0, I installed "Classic Shell" and "SkipMetroSuite".

No time to wait for MS

Very happy with results!!!

Seems far simpler just to check the .NET folder in the Windows directory or to check the currently installed programs (Add/Remove Programs). Installed versions are all listed there.

May I suggest an even better way to do it!
If you are using Revo Uninstaller which is free it wiil display icons for your installed programs - just hover your cursor over the icon and it will display the details for you.
I have been using this program for a number of years and it has been most useful as it is an excellent uninstaller that will also scan for left over entries after the program has been uninstalled.

Thanks for the tip, Vic.

As usual when using the command prompt, you can use 'switches' for the MS-DOS program being run. To see the list for any particular command add the switch " /?" to the end of the command like:
"DIR /?" [no quotes when typed]
Often one or another of the possible switches provide useful info or formatting.

You can also pipe the output into a file with " > filename.txt" or to your printer with the " > PRN"

So the full command line with pipe would look like:
dir %WINDIR%\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v* > C:\Net_Versions.txt

Program works on my Windows 7 64bit system
Be careful during installation, the software offers to also install Babylon 9, a translation program (which is probably shareware)
No problem, I chose "No" for that additional program, during the installation process

Notably, when you start the program, sTabLauncher is almost invisible
When the program is started, the launcher appears at the top of the screen as two almost transparent tabs
Orginally I couldnt see these near invisible tabs, and thought the program wasnt functioning !

The program uses 34MB of memory on my system - so I will compare this memory footprint to other launchers I already use
There are a number of options, including having the launcher at the top or the bottom of the screen (I prefer the bottom, so not to blend in with internet browser and other application tabs)
I found the launcher was getting hidden by other programs, including Firefox, so I went to Options/Advanced, and selected "Always on Top", and "Stay on top of Fullscreen windows"

Interesting utility, thank you Rob

Untangle UTM marks this as malware. Be careful.

view
Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago Remah

No, I don't think there is a need to be careful. One undefined and unsubstantiated report means little if you don't provide the details of the actual malware report. Other malware detection doesn't find a problem:

view
Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago whitedragon551

Do you know what Untangle is? Its an enterprise level firewall and threat management appliance.

Untangle uses more than just Bitdefender. It also does web filtering based on heuristics and categories similar to OpenDNS.

Flagged as:

Host: www.stablauncher.com

URL: http://www.stablauncher.com/

Reason: Spyware & Questionable Software

view
Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago MidnightCowboy

It uses a wrapped installer in common with many other freeware apps. Some download sites such as Softpedia classify it as "ad-supported" for this reason. This is not malware but a PUP (potentially unwanted program). Most antivirus programs no longer flag these, with the possible exception of OpenCandy, but as Australia says, whatever else is offered can be declined during installation. For anyone not paying attention during the install, please see here. MC - Site Manager.

Hope I dont get crushed again for making a simple suggestion. To keep things simple, I just make a "Stuff" folder on my desktop...in that I have shortcuts to any and all programs that I like to use. That keeps the desktop clutter to the minimum and doesnt load up my computer with unnessary programs. But then some users like a lot of programs.

I've used Rocketdock for years now. It's freeware and very configurable. https://rocketdock.com/download.

Here's the blurb from the website:
RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.
Now with added Taskbar support your minimized windows can appear as icons on the dock. This allows for better productivity and accessibility.

As Midnight Cowboy also points out, Untangle does not clearly indentify it as malware - spyware is not automatically malware. If it were actual malware then BitDefender is able to provide a much more specific report than the URL and name of the product.

Your insult intended to denigrate my knowledge/expertise is wasted because the original issue is that you misreported "malware" and failed to provide a report that is complete enough to identify the actual issue.

For the record, Untangle has the option of a free version which loses most of the useful paid features. which is why it is eclipsed by free products like pfSenseDansGuardian, and Sophos UTM. Of these Sophos UTM is the only one I haven't used.

view
Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago whitedragon551

Bitdefender is not what flagged it. The web filtering flagged it as shown by my post. You were the one who came in to denigrate the report from a well known security appliance vendor as if you knew more than they did.

You attacked my original warning first by saying I didnt post enough evidence and when evidence is posted you say you are attacked. Clearly you are incapable of having a conversation online. Im sure there are safe corners available.

view
Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago Remah

You're original report was misleading and unhelpful so I told people that based on your initial comment there was no need to be careful. That assessment has proven to be correct. You cried wolf stating that the software was malware when it was not. The category of "Spyware & Questionable Software" does not make it "malware".

I did not say that BitDefender flagged it. I said that BitDefender, as the main antivirus/antimalware component in Untangle, does not flag it at all.

I said nothing against Untangle which I have high regard for. But our focus is on free software so I provided information about better free alternatives.

There's a really easy way to group frequently used programs for quick access without needing to go to the desktop or use a program like this one. You can make new toolbars on the windows taskbar and put whatever shortcuts you want there. It's like your own quick access toolbar or toolbars. I have a couple, one with program shortcuts and one with folder shortcuts.

Good Call. I do the same. One for work, bills, photos, rarely used shortcuts, music and misc. Not sure I see the advantage of using a third party program to do that. RocketDock works on my Windows 7 64bit system
It is mainly useful for opening programs and folders via File Manager
I set it up to dock on the right side of the screen, and to Autohide so it doesnt obscure the screen
I also turned off the fancy animations, as they arent helpful for me
It uses 25MB of memory

Advantages: As stated, launcher for programs and folders. Nicer design than sTabLauncher, looks like Apple OS
Disadvantage: Lets you launch an internet browser, eg Firefox, but does not let you open with a specific webpage address

sTabLauncher allows you to open an internet browser, and to specify the webpage opened, eg a news website
RocketDock uses less memory, but because it doesnt launch a browser and a specific website, its less versatile, but is still a great simple and elegant launcher, and I use it now for basic utilities. I use sTabLauncher as a launcher too, including to quickly launch Firefox, opening on specified websites

Both launchers are great, for different reasons

Tidy Your Desktop With A Tabbed Launcher 3 years 8 months ago Australia

Its excellent you have found what works for you, and thats all that matters

For me, on an average day, I use around 25 programs.
Having all these programs as shortcuts in a folder or folders is not a good option for me, as the programs are displayed alphabetically which doesnt suit me, and I dont want to be clicking through the different folders
I like a visual launcher, which groups similar programs together, eg Office programs in one group, internet related programs in another group,

How large are these "snapshots"? Keeping seven backups would have to be quite a lot of space if it's essentially an image? Does it slow down even higher-end PC's?

I have had a most unfortunate experience with this product. There was not enough space on the drive for a snapshot and the drive was corrupted. CHKDSK was triggered and tried valiantly to recover. On reboot after recovery I got the blue screen of death. Fortunately I had a recent image back up. I would recommend caution using this product if your don't have some such backup.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago bernardz

It could have been a hardware error. As a rule, never run chkdsk before doing a reboot. Sometimes what happens is a controller has a faulty moment, the chkdsk if allowed to run can then cause this error.

Having sad this, I tried installing this program, and it failed. When I asked them why? They brushed me off saying they do not know and did not seem to care. If that is their attitude, I do not want their program.

It's not clear exactly what these snapshots consist of, and how large they are.

I use RegBak to automatically back up my registry every morning. 95% percent of the time when something 'weird' happens, restoring the registry will fix it. For the other 5%, I've got disk images, and daily backups of important files I'm working on.

I concur, this appears to be an imaging program through a different set of glasses. I will stick with Macrium Reflect for imaging (which has a free version and drive mounting), Windows 8.1 System Restore and File History. I also use FreeFileSync portable between computers (as yet another backup). Might I add, Macrium Reflect has been solid and reliable on Win XP, 7 and 8.1; and I have no doubt will run fine on 10.

Kurtis from Horizon Data Sys here.Your largest snapshot will always be your installation snapshot, as it's capturing the whole system into that snapshot. When you create a different snapshot, it will vary in size depending on the changes made to the computer. Some snapshots will inevitably be bigger as they are post-disk defragmenting.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago KurtisHDS

Kurtis from Horizon Data Sys. It's not quite imaging software. It doesn't create an image file. It's unique in that it takes a snapshot of your system and stores it on the sector level of the C: drive. So you would still want to use a disk imager.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago KurtisHDS

Kurtis from Horizon Data Sys. Generally the snapshots should take up 10% of your hard drive. With the Home Edition I may even estimate that it could be less than that. It's not quite an image file. First snapshot (Installation) is your base snapshot, that's your entire system. Every snapshot afterwards is being measured by changes. So if all you do is add a notepad document or two it would be pretty small, but running disk derangement and uninstalling a lot of programs would be substantial change.

It shouldn't slow down your PC, if it ever does you could submit a ticket with us and our Tech's can look into it and see what we can do to speed things up :)

Kurtis from Horizon Data Sys. While I respect your wanting to educate people, we are still evaluating the SSD issue. As it stands now, you can install RollBack Rx on an SSD, it's the Trim function that may cause an issue. Even then, it's not conclusive either way.

"Stores it on the sector level of the C: drive" ???

All the files on a hard drive are stored in disk sectors. That statement is meaningless. You should realize that many of the people here are tech experts, and you can't baffle them with meaningless jargon. Attempting to do so shows bad faith, and something to hide.

Personally I would never use any software from a company which is afraid to explain exactly what their system does.

Not to mention all the comments here by people who say they've had bad experiences with it, and no help from support.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago KurtisHDS

I wasn't doubting anybody's tech knowledge, rather I was making the differentiation between imaging software (which you can the image file put on a USB device, network drive, etc) and our snapshot software. Perhaps you jumped the gun on judging me ;)

I have no problem explaining what the software does. It's snapshot software, so the program itself exists in the pre-OS partition (MBR or GPT Partition) and is the first program that your computer boots into, even before Windows. You can take a snapshot of your system, and those snapshots are taking a system-wide capture of your system. It then stores those on the sector level of the hard drive. Again, quite different than imaging software ;)

If people have bad experiences with Support they should mention it to me in private and I'll look into it. We expect a high level of quality from all of our teams, including Tech Support. So if someone has an issue they should mention it with me and I can rectify the situation.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago GreenWyvern

Well, that settles it. I really, REALLY don't like software that messes with my disk drive's MBR - especially when it doesn't explain that on the website.

Your description of a what a 'snapshot' actually consists of is still as vague and meaningless as ever.

And your attempts at damage control on this site show an incompetent level of product support, and no connection with users.

There is absolutely no way I would ever download this product, or advise anyone to use it.

"We don’t want people to be left out to dry,” Patel said."

Or is it because Rollback Rx is not compatible with Win 10, which everybody will soon be using, Win 7 and 8 will be useless as a viable revenue source after 29 July therefore might as well make it free to flaunt it now while you can. If true, and when it is compatible with Win 10, then we can assume people will once again be "left out to dry".

Doesn't matter, I will l buy this product if have to because it is damn good product.

view
Time Machine For Your PC Protects From Mishaps And Malware 5 years 4 months ago Gildawie

I installed Rollback RX to try it out soon after reading the June 12 article.
Rollback ATE the free space on my C: drive! From 114GB free space out of 234GB, over a few days after installing it dropped to about 3GB.
I could not regain any free space by deleting files - in fact the free space dropped to 2.05GB before I realized that Rollback was the culprit.
The original "snapshot" was reported by Rollback as 196GB (greater than the total used space) and 4 subsequent snapshots averaged around 10.5 GB each for a total of close to 250GB (this on a 234GB volume?)
BTW that's well over the 10% estimated by the Rollback representative in an earlier post.
It took an uninstall and two reboots before getting back to normal. Good idea, perhaps, but it's not worth the waste of space.

Personally, I got rid of "Dropbox" a long time ago, for the same reasons I ditched "facebook". But the main reason I came in here is to comment on "Rob's" contributions to what was once known as "Support Alert", now known as "Gizmo's Freeware" which is misleading because it is so much more than that.

I came in here to read "Rob's" article and after reading it the first thing I noticed is some nit wit's "one rating" of the article. I mean com'on; his articles at least rate a "three" for the time and effort he puts into them, and in many cases the research that goes into them before he writes them. Have I seen anyone else contributing? NO! But, time after time I come in here to see someone giving his articles the thumbs down.

I've found most of his articles informative, even if I'm not really interested in the program or topic he's writing about. I believe his effort deserves at least a three to start with. As for this article I believe we all need to be reminded from time to time about our passwords. And "Passwords" are something that do concern a large cross section of all the people who read these articles. While other articles may not be something that interests everyone that's no reason for a low rating. I think many of us lose track of what the rating system is for, not only here,. but across the NET.

If I wasn't a caretaker of handicapped/disabled, which consumes large chunks of my time, honestly just about all of my time, I'd be in here writing about different subjects of my limited knowledge so someone could give me a "one" rating. I'm sure my comment will get low ratings. Oh well. . . . . .

The red box download link doesn't go anywhere. Too many ads to contend with. This seems to be a big pain.

A browser's ability to navigate links (in Windows at any rate) is dependent on how you have it configured, what add-ons might be installed, what third party security software you have, and how those are configured. If you don't want to see ads, please download an adblocker extension for your browse. AdBlock Plus, and ublock origin are two really good ones. It's a must nowadays.

As for the download page, here it is:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

When you scroll down the page, you will see two choices from where you can download the ISO. One is P2P, which is for downloading via torrent, and for that a magnet link is provided. Rather than the suggestion provided there of utorrent, I will suggest Tixati, which is clean and free.

Second option is of Mirror Sites, from where, you can download the ISO normally. Remember to click on the first column of the table, which contains "iso", with an icon of download, which should start the download from any of the sites.

Edit: I have added the above information to the article, for convenience of others. I hope Robert is fine with it.

Is it appropriate to ask here which one of these sorts of programs is the best one that will go on a USB stick. I'm running into a lot of computers today that do not have optical drives.

Ultimate Boot CD also supports creating a bootable UBCD memory stick Prof. Jewell. Check out "Making UBCD memory stick" on this page: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html

Thank you. One should also be aware of this note from their website though:

"Note that booting a USB memory stick requires BIOS support and is only available on newer machines. You can also expect to encounter more compatibility issues compared to booting from a CD, and *some tools may not work properly when run from a USB memory disk*."

It has been more than ten years since USB memory sticks first became bootable. So in the unlikely event that your computer is so old or simple that it doesn't have BIOS support for booting from a USB memory stick then there are free programs to help provided you have a bootable removable drive like an optical drive (CD/DVD/BD) or floppy disk.

Forgive me for saying so, but I believe you are being overly anticipatory and cautious. Why don't you go ahead and boot UBCD from a USB drive and proceed from there? No harm would come from it. If you encounter any problems then we will deal with it from there.
