A Freebie that Integrates Gmail, Yahoo Mail into Windows 5 years 11 months ago Soundfx4

"If you right click on any file and select "Send to mail recipient" then Affixa automatically creates an email in your webmail account drafts folder with the file attached. You can then open that mail and send it whoever you want."

While this is better, it certainly is not the solution I'm looking for. When I right click a file > send to, Ideally a Gmail compose window would open up with the file attached and uploading. That's what I'd really like :\ does anyone know of a solution that can do it this way?

Thanks rob,

another case of "just what i needed !"
My son emailed me six videos of a walk-around-virtual tour of the interior of his new house. They are about 12 hours drive from here so we won't be able to get there any time soon to see their house.
.... anyways, the videos that he took using hi phone or ipad were all upside down so I've been turning my computer monitor upside down on the desk to view them. LOL
Yeah, I know that it could have been fixed easily but I'm a tad over the hill (LOL again)

Your nice freebie did it so well !

This is handy since most people (for some unknown reason) hold their phone vertically when shooting photos and videos instead of horizontal like most wide screen TVs and monitors are oriented.

A Friendly Mac-Like Program Launcher For Windows 3 years 3 months ago crosseyedlemon

I'm a hardcore minimalist when it comes to computer desktops and want nothing more than a recycling bin icon on display. Using the start menu and taskbar I can generally accommodate a couple of dozen programs I use frequently. I can see this having benefits for those who like to access accessory folder or system tools quickly though.

view
A Friendly Mac-Like Program Launcher For Windows 3 years 3 months ago eikelein

I understand crosseyelemon's comment #(126181) above. But my spine is curling.

Background: Way too often, especially when a customer called me and we want to begin a remote support session, I ask them to start a specific program. I say something like "Please start Teamviewer, that is double click on the Teamviewer icon on your desktop". BTW "Teamviewer" is used here only as fairly well known stand-in, it actually is something else!

As far is my request to click on a *named* icon on the desktop and the limits of phone calls are concerned I get back the equivalent of a blank stare.

IMHO way too many people DON'T EVER actually read the text under an icon, that is for me the name of the darned thing. They seem to intuitively go only by colors and shapes; okay, that is their unconscious choice not wanting to know the name of the program they will be starting or the thing they will be handling.

But even more of this IMHO "dumbing down" nonsense? I am glad that I will likely not be around any more when that one day has become the accepted norm - and yet that day may come way to soon for my liking. :-((

As usual, this only IMHO and YMMV.

view
A Friendly Mac-Like Program Launcher For Windows 3 years 3 months ago yogi22

Re: eikelein' comments, I sympathize entirely! My way around the problem of the "blank stare" is to say,
"Tap on the Windows Key - bottom left between Ctrl & Alt"
"Tap on the T Key - now the E Key - now the A Key, etc., etc." (until TeamViewer or the desired program is completely typed)
"Left-Click on TeamViewer in the displayed results" (or the desired program)
Then starts the fun of getting their username and password

Advice: If you've never encountered cryptics before, find a description of how the clues are constructed and how to solve them.

I tried this and it seemed to indicate that two out of the three exe files had a Trojan. Scanned the files with three different AV scanners all which showed no trojans present. Not too sure about this.

view
A Gem of a Free Tool to Check Out a Program Before You Open or Install it 5 years 5 months ago v.laurie I am afraid I am not sure exactly what you are describing. Do you mean that you scanned three different exe files from other programs with this utility and it indicated they were trojans? Or do you mean you sent the files to VirusTotal using PeStudio and got a trojan report? PeStudio itself does not report trojans per se. view

Vic, thank you for this post.

I am sorry to be nitpicking but this forum is read by some people that are not geeks; they mostly have limited or no knowledge of technical intricacies but are here to search for advice and information. I believe we need to be very careful to express ourselves correctly.

You write "The file being analyzed is never opened"; that is impossible. It most certainly must be opened to be read and to analyze it's content.

You certainly meant "is never executed" or in layman's terms "never run".

Thanks for your patient indulgence of my rambling.

view
A Gem of a Free Tool to Check Out a Program Before You Open or Install it 5 years 5 months ago v.laurie OK, "never run" is perhaps better if you consider reading the contents of an executable file to be opening it. view

Hi. When the files scanned with PeStudio, the Virus Totals showed trojans, AdWare.Win32.Popupguide!O and PAK_Generic.001. There is no help file with this, so I took it to be that it reports a trojan/virus if it finds one. If I'm wrong I stand corrected.

view
A Gem of a Free Tool to Check Out a Program Before You Open or Install it 5 years 5 months ago v.laurie As indicated in the article, PeStudio has an option to send files to VirusTotal that can be turned on or off. If a file is flagged by VirusTotal, you have to look further to see if it is a false indication by a few of the many programs that VirusTotal uses or a real indication. Does this program have an instructional manual or other site to understand how to best use this?
I have checked the installation setup executable of a known good program SuperAntispyware Free yet it leaves some question (probably false) that this program may be suspicious.

Among the results in the main page are:
For File Description,SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition Setup

Under "Indicators" 16/28 are "redflagged.
The image contains 86 Blacklisted Strings
The image imports 5 Library(s) detected as Blacklisted
The image imports 108 Blacklisted Functions (API)
The image Imports 4 Anonymous Symbol(s)

The ACTUAL program application executable 'red flags' the below among others:
MD5,6C12BD722FFC94584348DD34F4059FC5
The image contains 189 Blacklisted Strings
The image imports 11 Library(s) detected as Blacklisted
The image imports 175 Blacklisted Functions (API)

Also, under "Imported Libraries 11/20" which were blacklisted:
When a red highlighted (blacklisted) [*.dll] file was automatically sent to VirusTotal nothing could be found. I did not think that VirusTotal would scan a *.dll file; this should be sent to another site for analysis; program needs to be fixed in this regard.

There needs to be better guidance on how to use and interpret this program. Any references?

5KPlayer installed Apple's Bonjour service without asking if it was OK to do so. When i ran the program, I got an alert from Windows firewall, asking what types of networks it could connect through. Not happy about either of those surprises.

view
A Great Free Media Player And Youtube Downloader In One 3 years 10 months ago crosseyedlemon

I would suggest a free program called Unchecky for the problem Gil encountered. Many downloads today try to sneak unwanted toolbars or extras past you so a program like Unchecky that prevents that is very useful.

view
A Great Free Media Player And Youtube Downloader In One 3 years 10 months ago Gil Mensch

I'll take a look at Unchecky. However, I'm always alert for sneakware. The installer for 5KPlayer didn't offer a "custom" install and didn't give me an option to opt in or opt out of any part of the installation (other than accepting the EULA of course).

From Wikipedia: "Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records." So, Bonjour is part of 5KPlayer's feature set. My problem with Bonjour is that it wants to run all the time as a service, whether I'm using the app that needs it or not. My experience with Bonjour is that it, like the Adobe updater task, keeps trying to reactivate itself even though I want to deny it permission to run.

If I'd known ahead of time that 5KPlayer uses Bonjour, I wouldn't have installed it.

I was mainly interested in this program for the YouTube downloading capability. When I discovered that it doesn't download in my preferred format (AVI), I uninstalled it. That's when I discovered another negative surprise: 5KPlayer grabbed all the media file associations for itself, again without asking. After I uninstalled, I discovered my mp3, ogg, flac, mp4, avi, flv, et cetera, files are now unassociated with anything. Yes, of course I can reassociate them how I want, but that should not have been necessary. I'm quite happy with MediaMonkey as my music player and VLC as my video player. New apps should not automatically grab file extensions for themselves.

AlphaGo's record now is 9-1 after defeating European Go champion (5-0) last year and now LeeSedol (4-1).

I suspect that, inevitably, any rules-based contest between a wo/man and a sufficiently-fast, programmable calculating machine will result in a win for the machine. Only for a little while longer will humans' "unexpected moves" (a function of our limited memories, imperfect recall and limited processing power, not to mention our imagination, 'soul/spirit' , insanity) pose real problems for our machines that play games with us.

Anyway, thanks for the further info.

I assume ExMerg must have access to your data for the commands to work. Doesn't this present some risk to the safety of your data, whether personal or business related?

view

I have to say that I'm a little surprised a website like this is being touted on Gizmo's. There is no privacy policy to speak of and yes, your data is being uploaded to a complete strangers website based out of Slovakia. They also state, "We carefully use sample data from our users to test algorithm improvements." Tread very carefully with this site..

view
A Great Reporting Tool For Excel Power-Users 5 years 1 month ago endriju

Hello,

ExMerg author here. Your assumption regarding the commands is correct - let me explain. To provide functionalities like data merging, data are being processed on the server. Personally, I would also preffer client-side processing, but we're not yet there - web applications still have its limits. This is of course improving over time, and I really hope that future version of ExMerg will not require workbook upload.

Meanwhile, let me assure you that security is and will be top priority at ExMerg. We have no intention of threatinng the reputation of this service (which we love to develop) by any means - and as a Java developer with background from banking and corporate environments, I personally take care of the security related code.

If you would have any questions regarding the security or any other topic, feel free to contact us via our website.

Thank you for your feedback and best regards,

Hello,

ExMerg author here. Thank you for your feedback.

The development of ExMerg is being done in Slovakia, however the service is hosted at Amazon AWS cloud. Anyway, I think that this fact should not matter from the data-safety perspective - services are being developed and hosted all round the globe, and it's really not about the location, but rather about the people behind the service.

Regarding the sample data - these are being irreversibly obfuscated before any usage in our development environment.

Best regards,
Ondrej Sevce

To rob.schifreen

I will not discuss ExMerg, but I want to say this:

1. Do you really think that VLOOKUP is so "notoriously complicated"? Strange opinion for the person who writes articles about Excel.

2. Few minutes ago, I read your another article - http://techsupportalert.com/content/best-photo-viewer-ive-seen-years-and...
Really and truly, is Diffractor the best viewer you've seen? In years. Then maybe it's the only viewer you've seen.

You have any idea what you're talking about? Sorry for my English, but I think it's much better than your knowledge of Excel and image viewers.

view
A Great Reporting Tool For Excel Power-Users 5 years 1 month ago sharphawk

@Neifer: I am not sure that getting aggressive or pointing at so called "lack of knowledge/experience" lead to any positive thinking. Of course we agree that we can disagree i.e differences of opinion should be encouraged, this is not my point. Moreover, I am not moderator in here and I do not want to be.
Anyhow, this being said, allow me to suggest friendly that statements like "You have any idea what you're talking about?" and others on alike tone, do not bring anything positive. In addition your English is good enough to understand the fact that questioning competence of anyone can not be considered quality arguments.

I agree with zepe. Tree style tabs is The Correct Way to present this information.

There's a newer Tab Tree add-on for Firefox. It's unclear if it will continue to work after the changeover. I haven't installed it, yet, to see how it compares. The author states that it's more efficient.

I also agree that the Chrome extension is cumbersome and awkward to use. Apparently, tree style tabs used to be built into Chrome, and they took it out. And, the hooks needed to do it right in an add-on aren't there. Disappointing.

As long as your recognize that proceedings and conferences are not peer reviewed and should not carry the same weight as an article in a peer reviewed publication.

view
A Handy Tip To Help Find Useful Online Information 4 years 9 months ago NICKM

One thing I did learn from grad school when I got my MA: In many cases peer-review means that you must agree with the philosophy of the editorial board, or you won't get published. In many many cases this means that top-notch scholarly research with valid conclusions goes wanting. Peer-review can be indeed helpful, but you'd better understand the bias of those who sit on the editorial board. Many make the error in presuming that peer-review equals objective evaluation. Often, it is anything but.

My own impression of your post is that you do not discount presentations that are not peer-reviewed, but you feel that we should be suspicious of such publications. I would disagree - Take the presentation or paper on it's own merits and investigate on your own. Just because it's peer-reviewed, in many cases, means little. I have no ax to grind because I have never been published or turned down by various peer-review pubs. I have not tried nor do I care to be published in my field (counseling).

That's my 2 cents worth. Don't want to start a major debate or argument, just expressing my opinion...

Yes, I agree-- the limitations of the peer review process are all too prevalent in so-called 'prestigious'and objective medical journals where the editorial boards are heavily influenced and populated by employees of pharmaceutical companies. Any new or contradictory information that's not in the financial interests of Pharmaco is usually ignored, refuted or actively attacked.

1) Thanks Rob for all of these tips about available, but little known, free programs.

2) If one checks around the web and talks to music hounds--as I have been doing for the past 12 months, foobar 2000 has a reputation for being very complicated to set up correctly and is rather high maintenance. Furthermore, many times it requires searching out and installing a special plugin in order for it to play a certain format. On the plus side it is often one of only two or three programs that can play (usually with a special plugin) certain more obscure formats such as DSD types.

Just a heads-up so others will know.

I've used Foobar2000 for years and it would take a major earthquake to get me to change. It does need some setting up and it's a bit quirky in the way it does it, but some spectacular results can be achieved. Once set up, it's definitely not high maintenance.
A few points that may be of interest:
1) As is the case with some other software packages, you may need to tell it where your copy of LAME is installed to play or rip mp3s. Ditto other codecs, such as FLAC.
2) It includes a very effective and fast ripper for any format whose codec you have installed.
3) It does play by directory, as well as by album/artist/genre/year, provided the necessary data is present in tags.
4) There is a huge range of plugins and extensions available from Hydrogenaudio. Some, like lyrics display are very simple to install and use; others are more esoteric.
5) There are a number of good android control apps available (notably FoobarCon). Once foobar is running you can control playlists etc. via your phone or tablet.
6) Windows only, sadly. I'd love a native Linux version.
7) Actively developed and supported - I think I first used it on XP and it's still going strong. Latest version 2 Nov 2015.

I only use whatsApp because some of my adult children live half way around the world, I refuse to use Messenger which was the one prior to that that they preferred to use- phew!
However from the time I knew FB acquired WA Ive been using it less and less and wanting something totally unconnected with Google, FB et al.
The trouble isnt finding one so much as trying to get family who are quite happy with the convenience and so-called encription of WhatsApp that they show little to no interest in movinng on:/
People just get lazy about actively pursuing 'safer' ( hopefully!), alternatives even though they often complain about the obvious intrusiveness etc of most of the stock IM apps.
I myself admit it becomes tedious sometimes when you finally find something that delivers on the requirements you're looking for but sooner or later gets picked up by the big multi billion $ companies and becomes just another like the rest of your blacklisted ones.
My want of my legal rights to privacy is still more important to me so I soldier on no matter what.
I just wish my family/friends werent mostly the 'bury the head in the sand' types who say that 'it's too late now anyway'. They do have a point however that doesn't take into account other very serious privacy invasion issues that we will be dealing with in the very near future!
I seriously don't see how WhatsApp can be seriously offered on techsupportalert as an alternative IM in this day and age, but that's just my opinion!

But I avoid other Google programs like the plague, as the Google updater has slowed my OLD PC to a crawl on at least two occasions.
It was so bad the first time, that I was sure I had a virus, and I lost a weeks work by restoring from a week old image.
The 2nd time, I investigated and found it was the Google updater. Uninstalling that was not simple.
Since then I never install anything Google.
Perhaps that will not be a problem with Vivaldi , as presumably it only has it's own updater ? ?

The other thing I dislike is Chrome's minimalistic interface (aka 'good luck finding the option you are looking for')
Does Vivaldi have the ability to use menu's (the way God intended) ?

Sorry to look a gift horse in the interface or updater,
Rob

PS I only feel safe browsing with NoScript in FF
Does Vivaldi have an equivalent ?

Just FYI, I run all browsers in Sandboxie. I've just installed this. So far it's been smooth. Any criticisms and I'll post again

Howdy,

Does it have a traditional menu bar?

I don't mean the 'gear' or anything like that.

I mean the bar that has "edit, view, History, Bookmarks, Tools" etc.

As an old fart I need this.

Cheers,

Paul

Yes it does although you can choose to hide this if required. MC - Site Manager.

crombierob, yes you can enable a menu system. Vivaldi can use any Chrome extensions available from the Chrome Play Store. I see No-Script Suite Lite listed there.

I've been using it since the first stable version. It is fully customizable and so far it works great.
Two problem I've encountered so far:
That when I run a full screen applciation such as a game or a media player, after some time I find out that Vivaldi has closed or crashed without any warning and I still haven't figured out why does that happen.
The second is that some rare times it may stop youtube videos (the video area goes green and it need reloading).
However, these days a newer version has been released (v1.7.735.46) and it contains lots of new features and fixes, so I can't confirm yet if the above problems still exist ro not.

Just tried this - seems to be ok, but sure does have a lot of ads which pop up.
And HOW can its 'history' be erased??? CCleaner does not clean it; Chrome has the same problem, but at least it has a findable history tab
Hoping someone will respond anon.

Article doesn't give me a single reason to investigate Vivaldi other than choice of color scheme. What makes it better than Chrome other than possible performance?
