I prefer creating my own wallpaper categories and searching for nice images to fit them. The personalization option in the confrol panel of Windows 7 allows any folder to be used for desktop backgrounds and the images chosen can be viewed as a screenshow at intervals ranging from 10 seconds to a day.

Fascinating stuff, thanks for posting.

The coffee map (No.28) surprised me a bit, and the Chinese names for countries (No.39) are entertaining. Can't make out what they call Slovenia though, I'll have to look that up.

No.1, Google Street View, is nonsense :-) Our town is well within the marked area and we definitely don't have it.

These are mostly romance novels. I'm interested in freely downloadable epub mysteries by John Dickson Carr, Ross MacDonald, Ngaio Marsh, Leslie Charteris, P.D. James, and about detectives, such as John Cardinal, Harry Dresden, Salvo Montalbano, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Elvis Cole, Alex McKnight, Logan McRae, Armand Gamache, John Rebus, and Lord Peter Wimsey. I've already got all of Agatha Christie's works.

Much of these books are garbage romance written by women. Even free they are overpriced because they would take up valuable space on your device..

You're in luck - Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series is FREE here: https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20080401.

For current books, still within copyright and by authors who are still alive and need to eat, please consider buying an ebook once in a while (and then use Calibre to remove the darn DRM), or just check out what your library has to offer.

Huh. I'm not sure what genre or category (on the left side of the screen) you were looking at, but the categories I checked before posting this had no romance books. I looked at these genres and their categories: Computers and Technology, Travel, Arts and Photography, Reference, and Biographies & Memoirs.
The landing page has a lot of romance novels though, that's for sure.

I think their classification system is jumbled, but the categories and sub-categories are more reflective of the topic.

You could check the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category for some of those authors, but I'm not sure that any of them would ever show up in the free category. Lee Child (Jack Reacher), Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch) and Robert Crais (Elvis Cole) are all popular authors. I've don't think I've ever seen popular and best-selling authors in the free category, and I've seen only a few authors at that level show up in discounted books. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Amazon's eBooks are downloaded in their propietary format, though they can converted to ePub on the web or using a program like Calibre.

IMO it's unfair to list as a con what "spam" comments that nor YouTube or content providers have no reasonable control over. Spam was first used to refer to unsolicited email. By posting comments for public consumption or post original comments to the content one is in essence soliciting responses. Googles/youtubes attempt to encourage/force the use of real names on YouTube had the potential to move abuse from inside the web into the world where people actually live. A crank angered by a John Doe on the web is likely to harass every John Doe they can find a phone number for. Actually comment on YouTube are some of the most useful on the web, particularly since YouTube got rid of the character limit and allowed inserting of all URL'. Yea you have to ignore the stupid crap, but that's a small price to pay for free. tmy gmail account associated with YouTube isn't my primary email account. The only time a make point to visit my gmail account is when I'm expect something from the google help staff or from the google/YouTube forums. Generally I scroll through the mail and based on the subject mark expect email to be moved to a folder for reading, the remainder is block deleted. I rarely engage in YouTube comment peeing contests

view
5 Best Free Video Streaming Sites 3 years 7 months ago usadoug

One doesn't have to use Google+ to use you tube, why not setup G+? When using YouTube I given the choice to use my long time anonymous YouTube user name of my G+ name. In the event the ability to comment is so important to anyone they should decide to stop viewing YouTube content after telling the google/YouTube and the content providers of that decision, and carry through with that decision. Clearly YouTube's hope was to clean up comments by having comments associated with what are thought to be real names civility would ensue. Did take sever exchanges with someone at YouTube to discover how I could still use my long time YouTube user name at YouTube, not my G= associated name. Sometimes getting what you think is right takes effort, and patience. Yes policy can change tomorrow. I'm ready to be allowed to watch the videos without commenting, or walk away from YouTube, I doubt few others are ready to do so as well. Anyway not in enough numbers to influance policy.

Hi usadoug, thank you for the comment! You make a good point. I am the same way! rarely will I spend time actually reading comments. YouTube also allows the uploader to disable/remove comments. However I think sometimes comments can border on abusive and/or irrelevant to the video completely. And if something can be done to filter comments more, it should be done. Wouldn't you say?

You mean that by using Feedly (Chrome extension) I do not need to download anything from Google Reader before it closes?

Thanks and regards.

6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago DavidFB

I don't make heavy use of RSS feeds but have found Firefox Live Bookmarks fine. I sort same into their own folder and they can be viewed in the sidebar when I want to do a larger review.

Saves having yet another tool open all the time.

view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago DavidFB

You need to migrate your feeds before it closes, wherever you choose to. Some of the tools allow you to import from GReader directly but it has to be done. Once its closed, your saved feeds will be toast.

view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago DavidFB

Oh sorry - you need the Feeds Sidebar extension to view them in the sidebar ;-)

view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago rhiannon Hi Peter, Correct. After the Feedly extension is installed Feedly will show a pop up window asking for permission to access your Google Reader account. Allow access and it syncs your Google Reader account with Feedly. Feedly is working on a clone of the Google Reader API and say it will be done before Google Reader closes and all your feeds will transition seamlessly. Just in case I keep a backup of my Google Reader feeds. You can do this through Google Takeout mentioned above, or through Google Reader itself. Going through Google Reader uses Takeout as well, so either method works. For both Firefox and Chrome I logged in to my Google Reader account - a good idea if you have more than one account. All my feeds and folders imported easily, nothing missing as far as I can tell. Out of the two I like the Chrome implementation better than Firefox. They've set up a Tips for Google Reader users migrating to feedly that's helpful. view

Personally, I'm never a happy camper when one service/company wants my login for another service -especially when that other service includes many other things than just a reader.

It's one thing to log into a service and then allow access. It's another to give your credentials to another company.

view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago rhiannon DavidFB; Good point. It certainly pays to be cautious in these types of exchanges. This is one of the few I've allowed, only because I have a long history with Feedly. view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago mrnukem

Feedley is what I ended up going with. it easily imported my Google Reader Subscriptions, no problems connecting to their servers and they give you various options for sharing links from your feed straight to facebook, twitter and google +.
The deciding factor to go with feedly though was the different layouts. I just do not like the Magazine style layouts for my reader and with the different layout options on feedly I was able to get it looking a lot like my google reader layout with expandable listings in the side window and main window, also the single Index feature it really nice as well. So far I am pleased with feedly, almost feels like Google Reader with a skin and extra options

I've also gone with Feedly, mrnukem.

The Old Reader might be an option if they develop a mobile app, but I'm still in a queue of thousands waiting to import my feeds, so I don't even know when I'll be able to try it out properly, (although the queue is now down from 18,000 yesterday to 4,000), and it does seem a bit light on for options.

Netvibes doesn't even have "search" (within feeds), which pretty much rules it out, and it also lacks customization tools.

That's what has sold me on Feedly. I've found I actually prefer the Index page you mentioned to having to scroll through my Google Reader list of about 200 feeds. And being able to customize each individual feed is great. I really like being able to set News sites as Titles, General sites as Magazine, Mosaic or Cards, and Photography sites as Full Articles. I'd say within a day or two I'll have every individual feed customized exactly as I prefer it. The Mobile app seems fine too.

So, while I was as shocked as many to learn of Google Reader's imminent demise, for now at least, it seems like I've found something even better.

6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago rhiannon Michael 2007, What kind of customizations in Netvibes are you looking for? It's extremely customizable, down to see your content similar to Google Reader. The customization tools aren't readily apparent, I've had to look up something that I wanted to do more than once over the years. That said, I consider Netvibes more of a start page than an RSS reader, especially if you have a lot of feeds. I too like the various layouts in Feedly, and you can customize the colors to some extent to make reading text easier. view
6 Free Google Reader Alternatives 6 years 4 months ago rhiannon sjaves, I've used Feed Demon for years. Sadly, it's dependent on the Google Reader API and is shutting down. Nick Bradbury: The End of FeedDemon view

I use Feeddemon to actually add and read feeds. However, the best thing about GoogleReader was the ability to share and/or comment on feeds (in FeedDemon) and share to subscribers via GoogleReader share. GoogleReader deleter the share feature for new users some time ago, but the oldsters still got to share.

So, what will replace sharing feeds with others? (via an RSS)?

Del.icio.us dumped my previous library and accounts when they became delicious.com. Connotea is no more.

Sharing to those specific sites means someone has to have an account to see the article shared. Will any provide an open feed to the shared content, like GReader used to? I would post the shared feed to my websites and folks could subscribe from there or in their own reader to my shared reads.

Feeddemon allows sharing by email which means a Wordpress or Tumblr could provide the library location (post by email) and those have feeds of tagged posts.

Sounds like a hassle...

I'm now a Feedly convert. Seamless migration from Reader, plus very flexible viewing options that can be set for individual feeds and folders. It has occasionally been unavailable (only displaying a blank page!) because of all of the additional users that they now have.

Folks should note that The Old Reader only receives feed updates about once/day, which is why I gave it a pass when checking out alternatives.

Include supported browser versions. At my workplace IE 8 can only be used. Some of these alternate readers do not support IE 8, only 9 or 10 (2 recent versions). Registered on some of these but none display correctly, so I had to cancel the account. Had used Bloglines in the past and it had a feature for user to retain certain feeds (like the Starred Items in Google Reader) but that feature no longer exists. Also, Bloglines uses Netvibes like a "back-end" - the two are very similar.
