Wow Gizmo, I've been following you for ... very very very long, I don't even have an idea how long already, but I'm speaking decades... And you always treated us with great content. Thanks for everything, and for making sure the service remains alive. You really left a mark in my life. Enjoy your retirement with your wife, and perhaps discover other great things to do. You're never too old (unless maybe for bungee jumping)!

Open Source is great stuff. But I cannot condone software distribution that does not include everything required to install and run it. This program requires Java runtimes. I get that these cannot be distributed with the software due to license issues perhaps, but other software with the same limitations have the installer program actually go and get the required additional items making it EASY for the person installing and wanting to use the software to actually accomplish that task. Call it lazy, or careless programming maybe? It just makes for a poor end-user experience. If you are going to do something, then do it fully, IMHO. Moving on to some other program that actually works after I complete the install.

i've read few articles about those two and some others before. but forgot on which sites.
i think much of the content on both ptio and priv australia are quite similar. what Panzer said could also be noted.
the site that Panzer gave the link is also quite good.
i believe that in the end what matters is what do you need and want in certain level, according to situation and condition.
there's no such thing as too much too many as for security and privacy.
sometimes we can just utilise few things for daily basis activities. sometimes we put on more from the arsenal.
these more and updated info could be integrated into Gizmo's Freeware's Security and Privacy List also.

thanks to the team, for all the effort to collect and provide us these info for us to read and learn.

The end of an era. I remember when you first started with your freeware newsletter Ian and the TechSupportAlert site was little more than a basic repository for your newsletter archives. Although you probably won't remember, you and I used to communicate occasionally via email back in those days. I used to show people this website all the time when I was working retail and helping people with their computer and electronic purchases. Sometimes they would come in looking software to do specific things and I would show them this site and tell them to see if they could find what they were looking for. Words really can't explain how valuable this site has been to me over the years. Enjoy your retirement and thanks again.for all you've done.

I have a paid version of Machete that I have used for several years but just recently came across a limitation: it doesn't handle large files well. Each .avi file from my 2001 Sony MiniDV camcorder is about 25 GB in size. Machete will allow edits (e.g., trims along key frames) but it cannot save the modified file. It goes into a 'non-responding' state. Freeware LosslessCut handled the same files with no problem. Support from Machete acknowledged the problem and recommended that I split the files before trimming. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a user-friendly lossless editor!

I enjoyed listening to several of the forest sounds since they loop/repeat. It's pleasant background sound. Some were distinct enough that the repeating sounds bothered me a bit. If your ear picks up repetitive patterns easily the site may not appeal to you. As Sturgeon General mentions, you may enjoy my Noise, and there are many good collections of nature sounds on YouTube.

view
Listen to Forest Sounds Around the World With Tree.fm 3 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

You're welcome. I prefer my Noise to other sites like noisli.com. You have to create an accout there and the sounds on the the free plan are limited. I agree, my Noise is hands down the best noise generating site I've come across, paid or free.

view
Listen to Forest Sounds Around the World With Tree.fm 3 months 3 weeks ago Sturgeon General

These recordings vary in length as you describe, but 'loop'. They are meant to be a soothing background (white) noise for relaxation rather than a full length movie. You may be more interested in an earlier posting also by Rhiannon from back in June...
https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/find-200-best-ambient-and-white-noise-sounds-site.htm
Here you find quite possibly the best sound generator period. I had my doubt to begin with, but this is the one!! You will not need any others after this one.
Thank you Rhiannon!!!

I used Everything for a long time. But, a few years ago I found Wizfile https://antibody-software.com/wizfile/ It indexes the entire disk in a coupla seconds. It won's search across disks, which I think Everything can do. But, it's so fast that that doesn't really matter.

The same company also has Wiztree, which replaces windirstat. Same thing, just a few secs, and it's done.

Both are fully functional shareware, so free to try out.
