SecureAge APEX is an anti-malware scanning engine powered by artificial intelligence and as such is about as useful as a paper bag in a thunderstorm. Sangfor Engine Zero uses the same technology. The CrowdStrike Falcon ‘detection’ is based on a confidence of 60%. You will need to read their TOS to determine exactly what this means but usually it indicates that cloud based engines have not before scanned the file or website in the case of a URL. Webroot is the only known name among this bunch and like the others is also riddled with false positives, this being one. A ‘.Gen’ detection is generated when the scanning engine detects nothing but assumes it might be malicious because it behaves like some other malicious software. In all the years I’ve been doing this I’ve yet to understand why folks will actually pay to install stuff like this. MC – Site Manager.
It doesn't compare to Irfanview, it's an image viewer, not an image editor. It's similar to the Windows Photo Viewer that's been around forever in Windows. View images with very basic editing such as rotating images.
Enlightening to know this is safe and to better understand VirusTotal weaknesses. Any further discussion about VirusTotal usage problems please post links. Thank you for find.
Yes, I mentioned in the article that VirusTotal flagged it. I also mention that other sites that do the same thing as VirusTotal say it's safe, but as always use your own judgement. I've also run it through my malware program on my system and ones online and it came back safe. Again, use your own judgement.
As MC mentions, not all the companies that VirusTotal sends files to are accurate in their assessments. Anti-virus software is known to produce false positives, and some vendors are less reliable than others. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
FWIW, I *always* test software in different types of online security sites and the malware program installed on my system.
If something is flagged on VirusTotal from obscure vendors, and the software is rated safe in other places and programs, I conclude those are false positives and I mention the flags from VirusTotal in the article in case they are a concern to anyone.
VirusTotal is the most well known service, but it produces false positives from certain vendors on a regular basis, as MC mentioned. It's why I test software at sites that are similar to VirusTotal.
Sorry, I didn't read the other comments before submitting the last comment.
They fully answer the question ;-)
Thanks again for another interesting app!
When trying to run the installer, a message like "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented a non-approved app from starting. If this app is run, it can put your pc in danger" (translated from my local language).
Speaking only for myself, I disabled Smart Screen long ago. It flagged too many programs that I had been using for years and some that are widely used as threats.
The program was labeled as being free of malware from the sites and programs I use to test software.
As always, if there's any security concern, check the software using methods and sites you trust.
Thanks again for the additional clarification.
In the article it states"VirusTotal displayed two flags from less well known companies. Other sites found no issues". Per my results it found 4 detections (Not two (2) ), which raised an alarm. In any case, glad to better know how to interpret these scanner results. If there is a REVIEW that discusses this further please post sometime.
Why do you think new antivirus products keep appearing or the established ones think up fancy new ways to describe what theirs does? The answer of course is always money since enough Windows users will buy this stuff to make them feel better. The OMO you use today for instance is no different to what it was 10 years ago in terms of performance but by tweaking the formula and promoting it through advertising new customers will buy it and existing ones will stay happy. A ‘blue whitener’ must be good right otherwise they wouldn’t put it in there? Your Nike socks will still come out grey like they did 10 years ago but you’ll be ecstatic with the result. This type of marketing tactic works wonders except for people like me who stopped wearing socks 30 years ago. :D
For Windows 10 users nothing additional is needed above what Microsoft ships with the system. People using obsolete systems such as 7 and XP have a risk level no amount of additional software can protect them from.
In broader terms all the antivirus vendors promise a lot and then disclaim it all through a mountain of small print no one bothers to read. In terms of threat assessment considering the high number of ‘generic’ detections often searching the various security forums will give a better indication than VirusTotal but as with everything it’s your mouse finger that controls your threat level. MC - Site Manager.
Indeed there were two flags. You saw more today. Another analysis of the file may return one or none or more at another time. The vendors, as MC mentioned, don't use the same methods or standards as the better developed products do. As MC said, one of them uses a 60% positive rate - that's pretty close to maybe there's an issue and maybe there's not. About as much chance of being right as flipping a coin.
I'm not aware of a review regarding this. False positives aren't unusual, but they happen less with companies with products that are reliable. You may want to look here for more infrmation:

To be honest I switched to Linux many years back but kept the newsfeed because gizmo had provided me some wonderful gems in the past and I often passed the info on to friends and family who still used windows. I contributed $15 as my way of saying Thank you for the work you do.
Hey Gizmo's Freeware crew,
Have you considered using Transferwise as an additional donation method? Their fees are less than Paypal.
I'm involved with another website/forum which relies on donations and the owner tries to encourgage people to use Transferwise due to the better fee structure.
It might also be better option for those who don't like to use Paypal.
If you set yourself an account up let me know. I'll be your first donater;)
It's (ad nauseam) an interesting idea but after looking around at the thin info on this app I'd prefer the "show 'em a brickwall" approach. Note as a matter of interest - IMO it is a plus that they are banned from the Google store.....anything that G doesn't like may have something going for it where we mere mortals are concerned.
There is a companion extension to AdNauseum (AN), called TrackMeNot (TMN) - that does the same thing, basically, to Search Engine Tracking. They are made by the same developer - with the same purpose - to give you a way to fight back (Passive-Aggressive ... tweak their nose a bit ... ).
https://adnauseam.io <---- according to this page they are PROUD that Chrome banned them! (Must have Tweaked their nose pretty hard: to get banned. LOL!!!) Darned 'Ankle Biters' drew Blood ... Ha-ha-ha!!!! It validates the AN extension's idea ... kinda proves it works ... and annoyed Google enough: that it tried to swat them the way We would swat a pesky Fly. (FAIL)
My 'search history', and the 'ads I've clicked on' list, are thoroughly poisoned beyond their repairing now ... I'd rather corrupt what they intend to collect - than try to stop them from collecting it in the first place (good luck with THAT).
(I'm so pleased to see that Google TRIED to keep the AN extension OUT Of Chrome. Thanks for pointing that out ... knowing about it makes my day. You are right ... it is a GOOD Omen - for Us. I'll bet that the TMN extension isn't in the Chrome extension store either.)
I use Firefox: with both the AN, AND The TMN extensions ... and the default Firefox "anti-Fingerprint" protections switched on ... I sleep well at night. ("I'm not the WO-man they think I am, at all, no no ... " [Rocket Man] )
I, and I assume everyone, would like to know the Fund Raiser Target, Numbef Donations Received and the Total Amount of Donation . This information would help us to determine how you did and how much more we have to do in order to fully finance the day to day operation of Gizmo and additional ventures.
I am a fixed income pensioner and not in a position to finance the outstanding amount but would like to know what you need and see If I can help more.
I am not a big user of Gizmo but would hate to see it disappear as it is a perfect example of people working together and sharing.

Thank you again for your priceless website
Due to my economic circumstances I have donated as much as I could
TechSupportAlert must not be allowed to fade
An oasis of information in a desert of soul-free and biased software sites
Didn't know you were in financial trouble. Unfortunately, I'm in the same sort of trouble, but I could happily donate five bucks.
Keep up the good work, take care!
I agree with other comments above about conflicting reports from anti-virus scanners.
I decided to run the setup exe file anyway!
For the record, here's what I found:
I checked the link on Module Art's website to download for Windows,
Dr Web noted that the setup link redirected to a different address on github.com, but said it was Clean.
VirusTotal said of the setup link that 75 engines said "Clean" and 7 said "Unrated".
Then, of the exe file itself,
VirusTotal said of QuickPictureViewer-Setup.exe (v2.2.6):
"4 engines detected this file"
They were:
SecureAgeAPEX
CrowdStrikeFalcon ("Win/malicious_confidence_60% (W)" )
Sangfo Engine Zero, and
Webroot (which reported "W32 Tojan.Gen").
Two engines timed out, and four said they were "Unable to process [that] file type". [really? an .exe file?]
However, the other 60 said "Undetected".
They included Microsoft, but did not include Windows Defender...
==============
Using Windows 10 Home, v2004 (19041.630) I got this when I tried to run QuickPictureViewer-Setup.exe:
"Windows protected your PC
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognised app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
Run anyway Don't Run"
==============
I then used Malwarebytes Premium (as installed on my laptop) to scan the .exe file, which reported:
"Scan complete, no threats detected."
==============
I guess that when self-styled experts disagree, you have to make up your own mind, as rhiannon says.
I ran the setup file with no apparent problems.
I hope to comment on the app, Quick Picture Viewer, itself, later.
Thank you for sharing the results of your exercise. Something else I've noticed over time is the same scanner(s) on VT corresponding to the AV product(s) you actually have installed on your PC don't flag something the installed system does or vice versa. Maybe we're meant to be confused then we don't challenge the results. MC - Site Manager.
I can't open QPV now, so how can I contact the developers for help?
My first use of Quick Picture Viewer (QPV) was a little difficult.
I wanted to view 2 files which needed rotating to read the text which had been photographed.
The Edit/Rotate Counterclockwise turned it 90degrees OK, but when I saved the image, it looked in File Explorer to have been rotated the opposite way.
So I rotated it 180degrees, and saved it again. OK.
Next, I set Windows to open *.jpg files using QPV by default.
A double-click on a file opened QPV, but left it as an icon in the Taskbar. No attempts with left- or right-click could get it to open the app fully.
Using the desktop shortcut produced the same results.
I uninstalled QPV (using its unins000.exe) and re-installed it.
Again, all I could get was the shortcut and the Taskbar icon, but it wouldn't open for use.
That's a really good overview of your experience, and yes it's a good idea to contact the developer and let them know. Their email is at the bottom of the page, scroll to the bottom: module.art.team@gmail.com
Files in Explorer use the orientation in the image itself. It's not unusual for images to show different rotations in Windows File Explorer. It's enough of an annoyance that I found and use this program:
Thanks for the thorough description, it's good to see other's experiences.
I may be wrong, but last I checked Smart Screen flags anything it doesn't recognize. What it recognizes as safe seems to be very narrow. It will trigger even on digitally signed apps.
It's hurting a lot of developers whose apps are safe. Most people think whatever Smart Screen flags is malware of some sort, instead of something it doesn't recognize - they don't differentiate between "I've never seen this before" and "This looks like it contains malware".
There is no absolute safety on the internet. I test software to the extent that I can to determine if it's safe before it shows up here.
VirusTotal regularly throws up false positives, where no other sources I've used see any issues. I include that in the article so you can use your own judgement. I urge everyone to test for yourself using a few different sources whether something is safe or not.
I take it as a given that a percentage of the time, VirusTotal will throw false positives on something I know is safe. It uses many vendors whose methods and products are unknown or questionable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As always thanks Rhiannon for another great Windows freeware option. I like the Slideshow function
My preference is Universal Viewer, also reviewed on TechSupportAlert
- the advantages include a portable version, no reliance on NET Framework, and option to remove the menu bar and status bar
WHAT!! No way. These two are probably my top 5 games of all time. They are both critically acclaimed and a classic FPS that focuses a lot on story, humor and gameplay. Sadly, they are not as popular as they should be. I could possibly write a big review on these games if time permits. I will be updating this list soon to include these FPS in a category where story based freeware FPS are limited.
As of 11/20 MANY of these links are dead (generate 404 error message). Some good sites, but it's a lot to wade through to find them. Thanks for the effort in compiling the list--but removing dead links would make site more usable.
I've been using this for a few years. It's excellent except that support has lately fallen right off in quality: people answering questions you didn't ask and not answering the ones you did. Latest annoyance; an account stopped accessing server. Support didn't consider possibility of smtp settings changing. The problem existed for a few weeks and I only discovered it by accident on, in despair, deleting the account and reconfiguring it from scratch. The right settings had to be input manually even though the provider was on the list of auto-configure providers. Apropos of which that provider, disroot, seems to be getting dodgy too. Why arbitrarily, without notifiying people, change smtp settings. They're also currently blocked by microsoft to my intense irritation.
One other tiny bugbear about Bluemail- text doesn't reflow, so it can be quite hard reading mail.
Is there a cataloguer specifically designed for music collections. MAC (MP3 Audio Collection) was great but no longer seems to work with large collections. When I last used it a couple of years ago it handled 120GB OK but now it just hangs after many hours. It was last updated in 2003, so the problem may be with current Windows versions.
Thanks for letting us know. I've taken out a total of 28 links which either return a 404 or where the link still exists but no longer has ebooks listed. MC - Site Manager.
I like BlueMail and is probably one of the best email apps out there along with Edison mail. However, none of the free eMail apps gives me a good mobile view and I find myself regularly zooming in to view eMails as mail contents look extremely small in 1080p screen for 60% of eMails. Increasing font size doesn't help, most of the times I have to do it for individual eMails or if I keep it as universal font size it doesn't look good for most eMails. I feel that it's mostly because they utilize the webview of GMails or even Outlook and doesn't have a dedicated mobile view. So I'm stuck with one of the 2 commercial apps that gets mobile view right.
This article update shows 25 Nov 2020. Thanks and great article. The comments are pretty old but I'll post anyway.
Ive.been using Sandboxie 5.33.3 for some time on windows 10 and all has been ok until recently. With a recent Firefox update to v83 Sandboxie doesn't run with this error: "The procedure entry point ?CreateAndStoreEarlyBlankWindow@mozilla@@YAXPEAUHINSTANCE_@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.
From the comments below the real question is, where do I go to get the latest stable version of Sandboxie that works with Firefox and I guess Win10, tho' I don't see Win10 as part of my problem.
I am currently using 5.43.6 64-bit with Win10. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/sandboxie-technologies-sbie-open-source.428156/page-24#post-2956457 At about six blocks down you can see the different versions as stated at that time. There's a bunch of stuff going on; technically a bit difficult for me to deal with. Since I always keep an array of portable browsers handy, I just use whichever works with whatever version seems to be doing well at the moment. Firefox is always sort of my main goto. Bo Elam is shepherding one fork and David Xantos is doing another. I admit I've never tried the plus fork. Added bells and whistles are usually not for me. Hope this helps in some small way
Appreciate the feed back Mike C. I'm not going to assume that the Sandboxie/Firefox difficulty I'm having will be cured but I will try the newer version of Sandboxie.
Thanks again
Did you look at the latest Messages app from Google? A separate app is needed for backup, but it supports the latest SMS standards and has a ton of other great features.
How beautiful is the nature... why some people look and see nothing? And so, give no value?
Thank you, rhiannon! For bring us the beauty and the great value... always! :-)
Many thanks for pointing this out. Unfortunately it does happen since there are hundreds of links to keep track of. This one has now been removed. MC - Site Manager.
There is a problem in the Free Windows Desktop Software Security List - System Hardening and Protection section. I was looking for an antilogger and in the Key scrambling subsection when clicking on the "NextGen Antikeylogger (FF,IE,OB)" link it redirects to [sex site link removed]
That may be an option for most people if they don't like or don't want to start using a product. If you work at an organization that allows only certain programs used on their computers, it's not an option. Might as well do what you can to make it work for you within those confines. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks for the details. What stayed with me was the volume of commentary that anyone should have to pay to use a browser. I was puzzled by it. If someone develops a program they can charge for it, or these days sell subscriptions to use it.

Years ago i had a tool that ran from the context menu, It ran on your machine, not online.
It did one thing and it did that very well - resize JPG files without significant quality loss.
I'm pretty sure i found it somewhere on this site; can't remember its name.
It used an image of {i think} a Hindu god for demo purposes.
Can anyone suggest what it was?
Should there be another persuasive post you can share next time, I’ll be surely waiting for it. facebook
Thanks! Excellent results. I made a few colorizations with very good results.
Peter
That's wonderful! I was impressed by the results across a lot of subjects. Definitely a keeper.
As always thanks Rhiannon for another great Windows freeware option. I like the Slideshow function
My preference is Universal Viewer, also reviewed on TechSupportAlert
- the advantages include a portable version, no reliance on NET Framework, and option to remove the menu bar and status bar
I have updated the link for SORR. Let me check for the other two.
Little Fighter 2 requires MS VC 2005 SP1 to work, I will try it out in the coming days.
There's an open source version of Lugaru that I have updated in the links, will check out if it's fully free.
Thanks and happy Thanksgiving
Nice find. Thanks
How beautiful is the nature... why some people look and see nothing? And so, give no value?
Thank you, rhiannon! For bring us the beauty and the great value... always! :-)
So i went there.
I created an account.
Nowhere did i see anything that resembled a way to create a font...
What am i missing?"

My pleasure, and thank you for the kind words. :-)
Golden Axe myth is gone ...
so is Blue Lacuna.
Thanks, links fixed
Very nice as always, many thanks
You're very welcome. :-)
There is a problem in the Free Windows Desktop Software Security List - System Hardening and Protection section. I was looking for an antilogger and in the Key scrambling subsection when clicking on the "NextGen Antikeylogger (FF,IE,OB)" link it redirects to [sex site link removed]
This requires Windows 10 Pro.
nice media players
Better method to avoid the problem:
Don't use Edge.
That may be an option for most people if they don't like or don't want to start using a product. If you work at an organization that allows only certain programs used on their computers, it's not an option. Might as well do what you can to make it work for you within those confines. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, there's that.
But i haven't used an MS browser since i discovered Opera - back when it fit on a single floppy.
I remember when Opera first came out, didn't people have to pay to use it at one time?
Not at first. And when it did start costing it was $35 for a lifetime license.
And it was the only truly standards-compliant browser at the time.
The link for "Gizmo's Security Wizard" is no good. Get an "OOPs, This Page Cannot be Located."
i created a open vpn on pf sense for a testing purpose give a solution for download exe file. export the certificate is not possible
Thanks for the details. What stayed with me was the volume of commentary that anyone should have to pay to use a browser. I was puzzled by it. If someone develops a program they can charge for it, or these days sell subscriptions to use it.
Ms. rhiannon,
again a BIG thank you for an excellent find!
You're very welcome. :-)
that site is oddly very similar to this site; https://www.privacytools.io
which has been around for years.
Good resources, thanks Panzer.
Oddly enough I updated the link to that site in this article yesterday. :)

I used to use Zedge almost exclusively for ringtones and other sounds for my Android until they started charging for simple sounds.
Not any more. I have found, although with a good deal of searching, a number of sites that will give me the sounds I desire.
