Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 5 months ago tedwest

One thing I forgot to mention that could be very important. Some sites see Pale Moon as a very old version of Firefox and so they won't give you access.

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 5 months ago tedwest

Thanks so much for the tip. I've activated "native" mode, but I don't really have the problem since I switched browsers. However, it would seem that Pale Moon's developers share the view you seemed to express that it is somebody else's responsibility, either the user or the site, to solve this and probably other problems, and in this particular case the question immediately arises: why is it in Firefox compatibility mode in the first place if it's actually not compatible on some sites and they know it? Though such sites may be few, for me, those sites were important ones like banking.

I just saw an update listed on Major Geeks for Basilisk that says, "Basilisk is a Firefox-like web browser from the Pale Moon team that is based on the Goanna (Gecko) layout and rendering engine," and it irritated me not only because you'd steered me onto the fact that Gecko is a compatibility option for Pale Moon and why is "the Pale Moon team" devoting time to another browser as Pale Moon wallows in obscurity despite being noticeably, significantly faster than Firefox and the developers offer a dearth of extensions on a page you can't even search while, relatively recently lot of Firefox extensions became inoperable necessitating the need to find alternatives and live with outdated ones that will never be updated? This Basilisk thing gives the impression that Pale Moon teeters while the developers consider at least the possibility of pursuing another direction. In any case, no one can argue that Pale Moon development seems vibrant.

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 5 months ago tedwest

I believe you've inadvertently made my point, and a late development make's Pale Moon's predicament even less tenable. I know far more about these sorts of things than the average person, and I'm not willing to go searching for a solution to an obscure problem unless I have no alternative. Furthermore, I have never had the problem in question with any other browser, and there are several that are very nearly as speedy as Pale Moon and all have features Pale Moon doesn't. So the only reason to use Pale Moon is for speed and/or because it may have a specific feature(s) that you like that cannot be acceptably replicated in other browsers. But since this problem has been unique to Pale Moon, it dwarfs any minor inconvenience I might encounter with another browser.

Also, and I repeat, the fact that Pale Moon is not compatible with some sites (that the vast majority are compatible is insufficient) and that developers know it, coupled with the fact that a site can report that I'm using a version of Firefox that's too old and the developers must know that and haven't rectified the problem (possibly as simply as upgrading the version number) feeds my contention that development is not as responsive as it should be.

Now the late development... I decided to use Pale Moon tonight using a different compatibility mode, and I immediately found that a site I visit everyday gave me a generic error message before even starting to load the page. Only when I used Firefox mode would the site load. So as a result of our discussion, not only has the problem with Pale Moon been validated, but the proposed solution rendered it less usable for me, and it points up the fact that there is no real solution available. The average user is not going to devote the sort of attention I have when there's a simple solution - use any other browser.

A Browser That Blocks Ads, Downloads Videos, And Is Portable. 2 years 5 months ago tedwest

As I said or indicated on my comments about Pale Moon, Slimjet is THE best browser and it has few peers, and I'm familiar with more than a few browsers, and it's portability seems in keeping with my overall assessment... except that since I last commented, I discovered that portability is a bit of a misnomer - just last night I decided to use mt Slimjet setup on another machine, and the browser worked fine, but none of my extensions did. Worse, when I opened the extensions page none of the extensions were even listed.

So I copied the extensions again, opened the browser on the new computer, and... nothing! They copied because I saw them in explorer, but they were gone after I opened slimjet again, and I haven't been able to solve this problem. I've been backing up slimjet along with everything else, and I had the same result when I tried to run the backup copy - nothing but the browser itself worked. It appears I'll have to manually set up everything on my other computer. So from where I'm at, Slimjet is portable in that it doesn't require much setup or write to the registry, but it won't work properly when you try to use it elsewhere. If anyone has a solution, it would be most welcome.

For me, a true backup solution is one that fully satisfies your "File Location" criterion by letting me back up files and folders in place rather than forcing me to dump them into the backup application's dedicated virtual black hole. I am amazed at how many online articles on online backup fail even to mention this criterion. Online storage is not the same thing as online backup. When you get an editor for this category, perhaps he or she could take a look at Syncplicity (10GB free) and Memopal (3GB free).

"Konvertor" contains viruses, according to Panda free AV, which even made me reboot my computer to clean them.

view
Best Free File Manager 4 years 7 months ago TekKing

I downloaded that file from the Konvertor website above without issue. I installed it. When I clicked on the Desktop shortcut, I got a Windows error, can't access. When I closed that message, the shortcut disappeared. Panda said nothing. I figured it was a Permissions thing. So I went to the program folder, and didn't see Konvertor.exe, as I guessed, but there was Kconvert.exe so I ran it. Same thing, no access, file disappeared, except Panda popped up and said "Virus", reboot. So I tried to uninstall, same thing. Panda has these three files in quarantine (I scrubbed the rest):

KonvertorFM.exe
Kconvert.exe
uninstall_konvertor.exe

view
Best Free File Manager 4 years 7 months ago TekKing

I thought it was the other way around, Panda quarantined them so Windows couldn't access them. Anyhow, I've never had this problem before, and I just installed and ran a few of the other file managers here without issue. Thanks for those reports. It looks like it's been a few months since those files were scanned. I don't know if these files are newer. Anyway, do with this information what you will, I just hope nobody gets burned! Sleipnir does seem worth trying! however upon trying it I was prompted to install a media player and it recommended VLC. All sounds well and good until it installed the player and tried to get me to accept about 5 changes to my computer search and browsers and I don't know what all. I refused all and it still screwed up my browser and search. Guess the relationship going forward is a bit too pricey for me and great text will have to wait until the price isn't too high.
I lost a lot of work and it left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Discover What Data Your Web Browser Is Broadcasting About You 3 years 2 months ago Tenta

Hi Rick, the data should be accurate, but if you see any discrepancies, please email me at hello@tenta.com with details and I'll investigate.

So although other sites may show some of this information, most are not mobile-friendly at all and outdated. We strived to make a responsive customizable web app designed for modern devices. For example, we're using service workers and smart caching so that results load faster.

Another unique test that this web tool offers is advanced DNS results. Your average DNS leak test site may show the IP, location and provider, but our API also delivers a more complete picture of your DNS privacy/security settings such as checking if DNS over TLS is working. Or if DNSSEC is enabled or "Checking Disabled" is true or false.

How to reinstall Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 and keep your data and programs intact 1 year 7 months ago TerraEyes

This article is Incorrect. Windows 8.1 has Refresh & Reset. Windows 10 has Fresh Start which keeps the users personal files and some settings and clean installs Windows 10. Windows 10 offers 2 (actually 3 but only going to cover 2 here) types of Reset (1. keep all personal files) and Reset (2. remove everything and reinstall Windows). System Restore does not restore your system to an earlier point - it merely reverses any settings changes, programs installed/uninstalled or registry changes made since the restore point used was created. Any documents, photos, or other personal files are not changed.

I recently dumped Avast after many years simply because of the annoying advertising pop-ups. After reading the recommendations by Chiron for Comodo, I installed it and have had it running for a few days now. No problems with it except for the deceiving tactics by Comodo during the install process.
Despite selecting "custom install" and unchecking the boxes that I didn't want, Comodo ignored that and installed everything.... I had to manually get rid of geek buddy and the Comodo browser.
How can this forum recommend software that continually breaks the rules ?

Best Free Antivirus Software 5 years 3 months ago terrawarra

G'day Anupam,

When I first installed Avast about 3 years ago, everything was good.... it was quite unobtrusive and yet quick to strike on any bad guys.

In the past year or so, with the regular updates from Avast, it seems to have become bloated and whilst I was still very happy with the protection it provided, it did become intrusive , the constant pop ups telling me that there were X amount of problems/issues with my PC seemed like a ploy offered by many shonky software programs that diagnose your PC, find many problems and then offer to fix them for a fee of course !
The Avast pop up invited me to click on a button to fix the issues with my PC and instantly I was greeted with a new message advising me that it would cost for the premium features to carry out this task.
Doesn't matter how many times I declined, the pop ups kept coming.
Bottom line ?..... yes, the pop ups did start to annoy me.
I know that Gizmos site does not endorse any paid-for commercial product and I believe that the free version of Avast is pushing the boundaries here with its constant nagging to upgrade to the premium version.
Meanwhile, I have Bitdefender free version running..... it's so unobtrusive and sometimes I wonder if it's doing anything but it has detected and quarantined 6 items since I installed it about a week ago. The only thing missing from it is email scanning but that doesn't bother me.

Not too sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here goes.

I recently downloaded the free version of "Malwarebytes Anti Exploit free" purely because of the good reputation of their free "Malwarebytes Anti Malware" which we are all familiar with.

This new offering, "Anti Exploit" is working as an add-on with my SRWare Iron (Chrome) and the only time I know that it's working is when I open my browser, a small window on the task bar tells me that it's operating.

Do any of you have experience with this ? .... and if so, can you tell me how it works ?

To me, it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all and I'm left wondering if it's smoke & mirrors.

Thanks Anupam,
I may try Avast again sometime in the future and give it another chance.

We are indeed quite spoilt with so many quality freeware anti virus products out there.

Best Free Drive Cloning Software 6 years 2 months ago terrawarra

I've been using the free version of XXClone for about 6 years now,... I'm amazed at how it makes a bootable working copy of my main drive onto a second hard drive. It saved my bacon a few times on the old XP computer and now that I've graduated to W7, I plan to use it again. The only difference between the "paid for" and the free version is that the freebie does not do incremental.
Not a big deal for me... as long as I have a mint condition of my OS, that,s all that matters.

Just downloaded an archived version of Adobe Flash but after reading a little more on various forums, I've decided to hold back on installing until I can be sure that it wont stuff up Nexus 7.

I have the latest version of Android which I believe is KitKat.... too many comments advising against making Flash work with it.

another great little tool for YouTube is the add-on known as "YouTube Centre"
available here for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/youtube-center/gabnjlibfmlilpl...

We all know that the latest versions of YouTube have changed so that when you pause a video, it also pauses the buffering which is a pain if you need it to buffer due to slow internet or simply a slow PC.
By using the above add-on, and unchecking the "dash" box in settings, it will enable the buffering to continue when the video is paused

Like the vast majority of comments here, you and the Tech Support Alert mob are truly respected.
I liken "techsupportalert" to Robin Hood and his Merry Men... and Women of course.
Taking from the rich and giving to the poor.....in the form of free technical advice, free and unbiased opinions on software and best of all, the best freeware !
Most of my computer skills and tech savviness (is that a word) ?... can be attributed to this site. Not only from Robin Hood & Co. but the many readers, regulars and contributors that add to the mix.
So.... to you Gizmo and your team as well as your readers, I say Happy New Year to all.
Cheers from Bundanoon, Australia.

AVG Free Antivirus Gets A Smart New Look 2 years 6 months ago terrawarra

Thanks rob,
It's been a few years since I last used AVG as my default anti virus.
For the past few years, I've been using Qihoo 360 and although it's quite good, I do get the odd false positive which is frustrating.
After reading your views on AVG rob,
I'm going to divorce Qihoo 360 and hop into bed with AVG for a fling..... yep, it's time for a change.
As for AVG being flagged as a nasty...... you don't get to stay in business for more than ten years as they have, if it's not good.

Best Free Reminder and To-do List for Android 6 years 2 months ago tesla33

I am desperately looking for a Task/To Do List that can do these three things:

a) attach a photo as a note to a task, and
b) attach a Call Button/Contact Button to a task.
c) Have a proper task widget to add and complete tasks

As incredible as this may seem, there is not a single app (I am aware of) that can do all! Please, somebody tell me I am wrong.

P.S. I realise that Any.Do may actually be able to do that. But Any.Do can't do... uhmm ... anything else :) Others?

P.P.S. Good list, good write-up BUT as a Task/To Do List, I personally find isoTimer a really poor choice. The Task widget is useless, adding and handling of tasks and navigation in general is really convoluted and visually... well, the early 2000s called, they want their calendar back.
Also, not allowing tasks without due date is simply unacceptable.

Thank you for the reply. To be fair, a task list/to do is an app where a lot of personal preference comes into play and I think I need to make clear that while I personally would not use iso timer it is neither a bad or a broken app :) I tend to forget that my personal priorities are not generally applicable.
I will keep looking and - if that is ok - put my experience in the comments here.
Cheers ;)

How I Set Up a Home File Server For Free - A Review of FreeNAS 4 years 8 months ago Tesla6c

The latest (v9.3.1) "FreeNAS requires 8GB of RAM to run properly" - could you state which version you used and the hardware you installed it on? This information will be useful for those trying to use their old hardware.

You may want to add one well-made Android app, R-HUB TurboMeeting for web conferencing, HD video conferencing, remote support and remote access. It is inhouse, secure and fast. Supports PC, Mac, iOS and Android. It provides access to unlimited users.

There's still a good way to avoid annoying banners and at the same time comply with the law. Not applicable to all the services of course, but may be a good solution for visitors tracking and analytics for example: https://about.xroom.app/en/privacy

Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 5 years 1 month ago texaganian

This and everything do completely different things. Everything can find files _by file name_ and using regexes if you wish. It is blazingly fast and yet doesn't have to build or maintain indexes because it uses the one maintained by NTFS itself. Brilliant concept, extraordinarily well done and massively useful.

Astro Grep, on the other hand, like any grep variant or descendant, searches flexibly for CONTENT in files. I haven't looked at this package yet but if it doesn't support booleans that would make it much less flexible than it should be and a deal killer for me.

But there are LOTS of Windows greps out there. I use Bare Grep extensively, though not for the exact same use case as the OP does.

Best Free Streaming Media Recorder 7 years 1 week ago texasbigbird54

I just finished testing Jing, CamStudio and Debut (free version) for use in recording streaming videos to save on my computer. I have a Win 7, 64 bit machine. In my opinion, Debut wins hands down in this regard for ease of use and video quality while keeping the file size small. I had a lot of problems and errors with CamStudio 2.7 and became frustrated after tinkering with it for most of an afternoon. I got great results using their lossless codec, but the file sizes were astronomical, and using other codecs resulted in poorer quality than with Debut. Sometimes after recording I could not save the file to disk as I would receive an error and the recording would just disappear. The program was just in a word...clunky. Jing was a total waste of time. I should have read the fine print, as a five minute recording limit is worthless to me, so I immediately uninstalled it without further use. Otherwise, Jing may be a good program if short video captures is all you would need.

Best Free Memory Optimizer 6 years 6 months ago texastechy

CleanMem - very useful. I waited too long to install this since reading the "Special Note" near the top of this article... about windows 7 optimizing memory well, and third party Ram managers not being needed. (not true)

I'm happy to report that my Ram use after installing CleanMem on my Win7 64bit PC has shown a marked improvement. Now that I have 8 gb of ram it's not the issue it used to be. But it's always irritated me that certain programs use so much ram and don't seem to release it. Before installing CleanMem my free ram would remain in the 3-4 gb range. Now it's staying in the 5+ gb range even with many apps running. Apparently CleanMem DOES make a difference. I'm not going to tell you it's needed. You'll need to decide that. But it does work if you're looking to free up Ram use.
