"Everything" search tool is a keeper. Why couldn't MS include something like this in W7. Forget so many bells and whistles and make things work and hassle free. Boy did MS really screw this feature! should have left it the way it was in XP. If you can't improve on it, leave it alone!

Apologies if anyone has already mentioned this, but there are two free version of PhotoFiltre.

The one reviewed here is the "lesser" version, PhotoFiltre 6.

The other, PhotoFiltre 7, additionally supports layers, though saving them only in its own ".pfi" format. It is available from the commercial "PhotoFiltre Studio X" website.

You enter the site on the news page, which has the following info at the top:

"The 3 versions of PhotoFiltre

PhotoFiltre Studio X : The most complete with layers, animated gif, 8BF, vectorial path

PhotoFiltre 7 : Version (freeware) with layers but more limited than the Studio X version

PhotoFiltre 6 : Basic version (freeware) without layers"

Hope this is of interest to PhotoFiltre fans - I was glad when I discovered it.

Happy 2014.

A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 8 months ago SimpleMikey

I just checked the EPIC browser website, and see that it DOES NOT include a built-in VPN. What it DOES include is an encrypted proxy. This seems like a good idea for private browsing, but you will have to provide your own VPN if you want that additional level of privacy. The EPIC website mentions what they consider to be security failings of VPNs. If that is true, then EPIC with a VPN might be a very good idea.

Google Removes 'View Image' Button from Google Image Search (and what you can do about it) 2 years 8 months ago SimpleMikey

Using "Open image in new tab" has been working for me, but I will try the extension you mentioned.

No one has mentioned the other change that I find more bothersome: Google has removed the ability to search for alternative sizes of an image. What is offered by Google Image Search is most often not the largest version. I used to click on the size of the image to open a page with all the available sizes. Really useful if a thumbnail image just won't do the trick.

Best Free Email Software 7 years 4 months ago Sinbad25

Having twice in the last two month had the mail in my inbox just completely disappear, I find the endorsement of Mozilla Thunderbird as the best choice quite questionable. A check on the web indicates this is quite a common problem.

Coupled with Mozilla's recent announcement of the cessation of further development of Thunderbird has persuaded me that it's time to move on. So I'm open to suggestions on a reliable free or fee PC based email client. (Which is why I came to this site in the first place).

For those persisting with Thunderbird, I suggest they move the contents of their inbox to local folders on a frequent basis. But with caution.

In fact it was in the process of doing this that I lost my inbox contents. I had sorted just over 100 emails into sender order and had transferred a group to a topic specific local folder when zap!, the rest of the inbox disappeared.

Caveat emptor applies even with freebies!

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 5 years 10 months ago sir walter

The dangers of these types of programs is very high. Computers users may not be easily categorized but I would offer these general categories; very Knowledgeable, knowledgeable, casual, novice (in terms of computer knowledge). It seem easy enough to say that the this web site and these comments come from knowledgeable computer users, but this group is in the minority. The vast majority of users (probably world wide) probably cannot detect, grasp the nuances and avoid installing OpenCandy and its ilk. Which means that in spite of an intellectual debate that informs us enabling us to make knowledgeable decisions(like this particular discussion) the vast majority of users will unknowingly install Opencandy. How many millions of installations is that? 1,10,100 million or more? I worked on my Grandmother's PC that had slowed to a crawl and hundreds of these types of products infesting her pc, slowing it down and doing who knows what. It is this defenseless group who form the vast majority of users who will end up with this program. They are the prey. I acted in her behalf to warn her, put some protections on her PC and to give some good general advice. I think it is an obligation of the knowledgeable users to act on the behalf of those less capable, think of it as a civic service. This program should be banned because the majority of those who end up with it, were targets and not capable of acting in there own behalf.

Free Ransomware Protection Utility 4 years 6 months ago sirpaul2

It's better than most, but I wouldn't rely on it. Go to YouTube and watch 'More fun with ransomeware part 4'.
It's virtually impossible to stay ahead of malware due to security always being at least hours behind new exploits.
A recent (unplugged) disk image/disk clone is still the best defense against ransomeware.

Anything's possible with a delayed attack. One would hope that anyone who creates a disk image would also make sure beforehand that the original image isn't compromised, as there is no ability for devices on opposite sides of the "gap" to communicate - but that discussion is for a different article.

Best Free Folder Synchronization Utility 7 years 7 months ago skan

Hello.

Can any CVS software (kind of Git, Bazaar, CVS...) be used for the same?

I've being trying all the applications you say in the article and I prefer Alway sync, though is not perfect, I don't like the double scrolling system.

They are not intelligent enough.
I would like some app that show everything as a tree and able to detect not only that something exist in the other folder but also able to detect that a whole subtree/branch/folder with subfolders has been moved to a different place.
Instead of that this applications tell you that something is missing from one place and something is new in some other place but you have to figure out the relations.

There are many others, such as Freemake, Any Video Converter and Mediacoder.

Sometimes I use Mediacoder because it lets me to choose frame rates as low as 1 fps. Sometimes this is good to highly compress some tutorials or "still image" videos without loosing resolution.
It has a drawback though, an annoying ad.

One thing to be taken into account is that the fast GPU compression that many programs offer dont's produce a good quality output, even with larger files.

Best Free Media Player 6 years 1 month ago skan

Hello.

What program/settings is the best option to play high quality avi or mkv videos on an old computer (with Windows)?
Now I'm using a old laptop. Potplayer, VLC or mediaplayer work well with movies up to 1000kbps.
But if I try to play anything aboce this or 720p all I get is image problems, interruptions, pixelation and desynchronization, no matter the settings I use (even with lav filters...)

Is there any program able to play 1080p movies in a old computer?
I don't mind not having special effects, perfect image... only need to get a lower resolution image without problems

view
Best Free Media Player 6 years 1 month ago skan

Hello and thank you for your advises.

I already tried the overlay mixer setting before, and in fact is the best option so far, though not enough for all videos.

I will also try the "reset video" option you suggested. ¿Are you sure that won't need even more resources to make an extra conversion?

It's my girlfriend's laptop, an old Samsung R20, Celeron M dual core 1.7Ghz.
with a Radeon Xpress 1300M.
The dxva setting doesn't make any difference. I guess this card is not powerful enough.

And I don't know why the task manager only shows one core even though the computer is supposed to have 2.

So far the best option I have found is SMPlayer. It allows to skip some frames to allow better synchronization. Does Potplayer (or the LAV filters) have this option too?

BTW with that kind of audio system you will be able feel the diference on your own. And about AIMP insecurity...Really ? Because it made by russian developer and hosted there :)

And one feature that i really appreciate - AIMP has built-in-out-of-the-box-one-click ability to record streaming audio, for example internet radio ) with user defined save_format and split_track options. English translate included.

Best Free Antivirus App for Android 6 years 10 months ago skittleys

(1) Where's MalwareBytes?! This list was updated December 12, almost 2 months after its long-awaited arrival in Google Play.
(2) You have done an excellent job highlighting apk scanning, privacy features, and various utilities. However, you touch very little on the biggest malware threat of all: those embedded in pdfs and other common files. Many of these apps do not offer real-time scanning of new non-apk downloads. And several—including your new favourite app, 360 Mobile Security—offer no file scanning capabilities at all. At the very least, this should be added to the "con" list. This is a much more critical feature of any antivirus app. While phone finding, RAM monitoring, and backups are wonderful, they are not a necessary component of an anti-malware solution, and there are many excellent free apps available that provide these services. I—amongst others, I imagine—would rather use an app that provides full anti-malware protection and no other features, as opposed to a security "suite" that provides many services but no protection against documents etc. Thankfully, there are quite a few apps that offer this protection, but this list is more or less ignoring this aspect.

I have been running BOINC since 2008. Please educate yourself before making such statements. There are many more projects than SETI@Home. Some have more merit than others. SETI is simply the most well known and has introduced most users to the BOINC platform so is the most often cited. BOINC is open source freeware that has nothing to do with any government. Idle computer time can be used to help find cures for AIDS, cancer, ebola, etc. or help study the orbits and properties of near Earth orbit asteroids, find prime numbers... There are literally dozens of projects to choose from. Not to mention a friendly and active online community with users willing to help with issues far beyond the scope of BOINC itself.

FDM was moving at a snails pace of 70kb/sec with an estimated time of 14 hours.

I installed UGet and its running super fast at 1.9M/sec with a total time of 29 minutes.!

Perhaps there's some tweaking that can be done within FDM to improve its performance, but straight out of the box, in my situation, UGet is vastly superior.

I have used this site for a couple years and have been very pleased with it.

Finally registered today with an FYI and a question.

I have used Photoscape for awhile for a couple of its features.
Today it prompted me to download a new version 3.6.5 which I did.
After downloading I scanned the file with my anti-virus and Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes gave a warning that it contains OpenCandy.

I re-scanned the last version I had downloaded v3.6.2 and it does not contain it, so it appears it has been added recently.
I know there are different views on OpenCandy and I understand that.
(My opinion is I don't look for trouble.)

My question is has anyone installed the newer version and does it give an option to opt-out?
Thanks...

AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 4 months ago SkuterB

I'll second that mouse53, with 1 clarification, I do understand that freeware creators need, want or hope to make money on their software and I will help them when I can.

It always seemed simple to me, IF an adware or toolbar developer is truly proud of their software, all they have to do is add a little blurb during the freeware installation telling you it is available and what it does and then have an UNchecked box where I can opt-in if I am interested.
Having a hidden or difficult to find box that is already checked and I HAVE to opt-out to avoid is underhanded no matter how you look at it.
IMHO That includes Adobe w/McAfee.

I also appreciate Gizmos giving me a heads-up when a program is infected with un-necessary and probably unwanted add-ons.

HxD 4 years 1 month ago SkuterB

I'm confused.
I have been using the installed English version of HxD since 2010 v1.7.7.0
It's the same version that is available now.
I have compared what I downloaded then and what is available now and they are identical.

All the file features still work fine, including the compare feature.
I see no mention of a trial or Pro version on the site.

Also (from the review), I have never had any problem over-writing a file.
After I complete any changes it asks if I want to save them.
If I say no, original file is unchanged.
But I always backup prior to changes just in case.

I tried the portable version today and it works the same.

I have never needed the Disk Editor or RAM Editor, so I cannot comment on them.

This is a great little program. I don't use it a lot,
but when you need something fast & easy, nothing else will do.
Just use VERY carefully.

AndyR, Thank you for the KB #s, I will check...
I started my Win 7 PC this AM to an icon on the clock task bar to reserve my Win 10 free upgrade. I tried to quickly dismiss it but there is no ready option. So I clicked it and watched the screenplay.
There is nothing that appeals to me at all. I don't like Win8 or 8.1 and I am quite happy with Win 7.
I purchased my PC because it had Win 7.
Part of my updating routine is to always update my software. Now, I can't even trust that.
Is there a way to tell right off, if MS is infecting my PC with updates for Win 10?

v.laurie, First, Thank you for this article!

I use my Win7 WMP extensively. I purposly converted my entire CD collection to electronic and sold my CD player and gave away all my CDs.
I have WMC for my X-Box 360. The thought of having to use WinAmp is not appealing to me. I want my WMC.
Since it seems the trend is pushing toward cloud computing I figure Microsoft's solution will be to sell an app for your WMC online. This is speculation on my part but I see something like that happening. It seems like everything is moving to mobile computing. I'm not interested in paying more money to enjoy something I already paid for.
As for the replacement of WMC, I believe MS will have it all sent to a cloud. The player app will access the cloud for the play files and you will get slanted advertisements. You will see ads based on your photos, videos and music selections.
Microsoft couldn't pay me to upgrade to Win 10

Hi Gizmo Gang,
Gizmo has been my favorite source for information and freeware for a very long time. Kudos!

Might I suggest an article that tells how to Prevent a Win 10 upgrade and how to remove the KB files that Windows Update presets on your system.
I've learned my lesson with the common piggyback ware from freeware installations but I used to trust MS to only update the OS. The days of blindly clicking update are gone. I have already set Windows update to 'ask me before installing' but do I have to research every single update now? There must be a better way?

For those of you who want to remove OpenCandy from Axcrypt:

Extract the Axcrypt Installer with OpenCandy Offer using 7-Zip.
Open the extracted folder and delete $PLUGINSDIR.

This should remove the OpenCandy junk from the installer.

The malware included product is Free make video conversion. I found the other software but its misleading I will partially take that back. It says Review to see the others what??? It should say other products or something other than making the user think its a review of that software. It makes itsound like you are downloading or reviewing what is listed like WOT or Kasperaky TDS Killer.
