32 weeks 3 days ago How To Fix “BOOTMGR is missing” Error in Vista and Windows 7 Alienrio

This document pertains to HP and Compaq desktop PCs that came with Windows 7.

The following error opens when attempting to start the PC:

BOOTMGR is missing
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the PC

If you recently installed an additional hard drive, turn off the computer and remove the drive before using the
following steps:

1. Open HP System Recovery:

CAUTION: Do not perform a system recovery! Stop at the first recovery screen.
Press the F11 key repeatedly while the computer is starting.

If you have a recovery disc, turn on the PC and insert the first recovery disc into the drive. Use the disc to enter the system recovery.

2.
Select Microsoft Startup Repair tool and wait for repair to find and fix errors. When finished, restart the computer; even if the startup repair tool finds errors but cannot fix them.

3.
If the error message persists, open the recovery manager screen as was done in step 1.

4.
At the recovery manager screen, press ALT + D.

5.
Enter the following text at the command prompt: bootrec /rebuildbcd

6.
If bootrec displays "Add installation to boot list?", press y .
After bootrec completes successfully, the computer displays "The operation completed successfully".

7.
To close the command prompt, enter the following text: exit

8.
At the Recovery Manager screen, select Microsoft Startup Repair tool (again) and wait for startup
repair to find and fix errors. When finished, restart the computer.

9.
The error should no longer open. If it does, perform a system recovery, making sure to backup
important files.

If you removed a hard drive before using these steps, replace the drive. If the error occurs again, make sure the additional hard drive is not set as an active drive. Only the main bootable drive should be set as active.

@detailer:

Microsoft's .net framework has been a great and successful attempt from Microsoft to move past the age-old Windows API. For those who know programming realize to every inch how cumbersome Windows API was and how good .net is. Windows API was developed in days of C, while .net uses modern programming languages like C#.

If Microsoft continues to use Windows API, people complain that Microsoft is not innovating, and that the newer OS's from them are still based on Windows 95/NT from mid 1990's. When they innovate, people like you refuse to adopt.

One of the best things that can happen to Windows is for them to remove not .net from it, but the underlying Windows API rather. Kudos to them that they support the older stuff so as to keep existing programs working.

So please get over this and move on. If anything, you should embrace those applications that are written in .net, not the other way around.

1 year 19 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

This article should point out that one needs to install one of the Office programs it recommends BEFORE installing Oracle PDF Import Extension. Otherwise, Oracle will not install. Likewise, for clarity, it would be helpful to list the hyperlinks at the end in the order in which they need to be installed, not the reverse.

view
1 year 19 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

Be warned, when I downloaded OpenOffice, all the WordPad documents I had saved on my hard drive were automatically converted to OpenOffice. Not exactly what I had in mind! I'm sure there's some default setting I can change to fix this, but I was not presented with this option in the process of downloading OpenOffice.

Also, as an aside, "losing" was misspelled as "loosing" in the article.

view
1 year 19 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

I'm not so sure that if I were reading the article for the first time, I would gather from the new sentence, "[w]ith the Oracle PDF Import Extension installed on top of LibreOffice or OpenOffice, it produces a hybrid PDF / ODF file" that a user must have one of these Office programs installed before installing Oracle. I think that that point would seem obscure to me partly because this sentence is focused on trying to make another point--namely, what kind of file is produced; and partly because the term "installed on top of" sounds vague to me, probably simply since I'm not a techie. I guess it just depends on how broad an audience you're trying to reach! I do thank you for being so quickly responsive, though, and marking the Office program links as "Requirements" at the end does help (though I think listing these first would be even clearer). Oh my, I fear that too much editorial blood is coming out in me here...sorry!

view
1 year 19 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

I just opened up a copy of my Adobe Acrobat-created resume through Oracle PDF Import Extension added onto Apache Open Office, and the formatting came out severely messed up. How disappointing! Is there something else I can do to actually obtain the 100% layout accuracy touted here?

Or, if I were to fix up the resume's formatting in Oracle, and then edit it, is it possible that the formatting would at least stay the same when the resume is opened again in Adobe Reader? I'm trying to be able to edit my resume at home as needed and send it to prospective employers in a form that they'd be able to view perfectly formatted, without my having to buy Adobe Acrobat or MS Word. I only have WordPerfect at home, and usually, that's all I need. I've tried translating the resume all sorts of ways and into various forms, but every time, the formatting seems to get messed up--even from Word Web App to Word.

Is there some better solution?

Also, is there a quick way I can get all my WordPad documents, which automatically converted into OpenOffice Rich Text documents when I downloaded OpenOffice, back into WordPad form again?

view
1 year 19 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

Jojo, thanks for the edits. Things are much clearer now. Part of the problem, I think, is that you are explaining something that is inherently quite complicated and confusing. Thanks for your patience! I don't think I have the courage to officially do that kind of editing right now! ;)

Thanks, too, for the timely tips. I would've given up by now without you! I see that I got confused into thinking that "100% layout accuracy" was being promised for any PDF files that one imports into, as well as exports out, of Oracle/Office, rather than only for documents that someone makes from scratch in the latter and then exports. It sounds like another reader or two may also have fallen into that trap; it might not be bad to emphasize this distinction in the article. Unfortunately, "keeping only basic formatting in a file" is something that I just can't afford to do with a resume, in which looks count for so much. Otherwise, I would just make an RTF version and call it a day!

Anyway, I started following the steps listed for creating a hybrid file, but the "Create Hybrid File" did not come up in the PDF Options window. I know that Oracle PDF Extension is installed on my system, because it is listed in the Extensions Manager of OpenOffice. Could you please tell me how can I get this tick box to show up?

Also, this is confusing to me: "If the PDF file is exported from LibreOffice/OpenOffice Writer, it opens directly in Writer." In other words, if the file is exported out of the location, it winds up right back in there? I guess what you're saying is the PDF version goes out and the ODF version comes in. Is that right?

It seems hard to believe that documents imported from Adobe into Writer/Oracle can become mangled in their formatting, but not the reverse. Anyway, I will try and see for myself, if I can get through the "Create Hybrid File" problem. Thanks!

P.S. Too bad that some of the formatting features I would want the most in OpenOffice are grayed out--I guess because I'm using the freebie version. It's easier for Oracle to promise "100% layout accuracy" when there are minimal layout features available in the program it supports! However, note to the wise: I was able to get horizontal lines for my resume in OpenOffice by copying them from my Adobe Reader version and then doing a lot of hand tweaking.

view
1 year 18 weeks ago A PDF File Allows Editing in 100% Layout Accuracy Altinkerer

By gum, I think I got it! I created a file with this extension/suite using a bunch of varied formatting including lines, bolding, different font sizes, and bulletted items, saved it in the way you described, and was able to open it unchanged in Adobe Reader. The one thing I realized (which I guess should have been obvious to me from the start) is that one must export it this way each time directly prior to its being opened in another PDF reader. That is, it's not enough to go through these steps once and then just save from on, expecting the program to continue saving all the new material you create in hybrid form.

I think my main confusion with the concept "If the PDF file is exported from LibreOffice/OpenOffice Writer, it opens directly in Writer" is that to me, the term "export" means that something is sent out, whereas in this case, the "exported" file is just being converted into a different form and then reappears in exactly the same place that it came from originally. But I guess that's the software's terminology problem, not yours. Or maybe I'm being too much of a narrow-minded literalist!

Anyway, having achieved victory, I can overlook the weird sideline confusions. On to creating some targeted resumes...and the next step: employment!

Thanks,

Altinkerer

I finally followed through your instructions for changing my WordPad docs that became associated with OpenOffice, back into WordPad-associated files. I was just curious why you suggested opening one of these RTF documents in Windows Explorer. Instead, I simply right-clicked on one of the documents (not "in Explorer"--I don't even know what this means or how one would do it) and then followed the rest of the procedures you mentioned, after which all my RTF docs changed back into WordPad.

At one time I used to say that about my programs as well. Then I humbled myself and grew up a bit and realized that the only bug free program is a trivial one that does very little, and even that could have bugs depending on the language, 3rd party libraries and OS.

That said, I am not commenting on the web site or application, I have not yet tried it yet. I may have to, just to experience the first bug free program of my life. :-)

Having played around a bit, I will say the concept is good, and the app does seem to work very well. Not as flexible and intuitive in initially playing with it as I expected, but it is interesting.

Moving from one building to another at work, I have an office to myself once again. I may get the office measurements and play with this a bit just for fun to see how I could rearrange the office if I wanted to. Visio would work too, but this is easy to use even if I am limited in furniture.

What would be nice with this would be to take it further and give it Google Sketchup like capabilities where it could become much more 3-dimensional and allow different views. Maybe that's already there and I just have not yet discovered it - or maybe have limited access since I did not feel like registering to use it.

Hi MC

Just because you have IE10 does not necessarily mean that previous versions of IE files are removed from your computer. Microsoft's mediocre attempt at developer tools "F12 Developer Tools" for web developers are installed by default since version 9. They allow developers to switch IE to use the rendering engines of older versions. I'm guessing that such functionality is not necessarily built into >= IE9 but instead flips those versions of IE into using older versions of mshtml or what not.

If my hypothesis is correct then Belarc is right to say that you need to patch the older files.

I thoroughly check Backup Maker and I am very disappointed with the product. For one thing, it refuses to execute the backup of my program files in the computer.

Programs are supposed to be user friendly. If it is not user friendly, it will easily confuse the novice user. If Backup Maker refuses to backup, then there is something wrong with the program or it is really not user-friendly.

Also, I can't seem to uninstall it. One un-installation file is missing.

I also suspect Backup Maker to contain malware. But I do not know whether the malware comes from Backup Maker, but from my experience, if a program refuses to un-install, it is usually due to malware.

I will see if FBackup is better. EaseUS Todo Backup does not backup on USBs that is why I cannot use it although it seems to be easier to operate.

I hope this comment will be instructive to you.

The original KM Player developer left the project and created his own player which, in my opinion, is much better. It is featured on this site as the top choice for the multimedia player section:

I switched to FortiClient a few weeks ago too. The signature updates are automatic.
By default the software itself will only display an alert when a software update is available, but there is an option in File > Settings "Automatically download and install updates". Note that this option does not refer to the signature updates--which are always automatic in my experience--but to FortiClient itself.
So far I think FortiClient is worth a look - high detection rates, fairly lightweight and needs virtually no user interaction. The web filter is a nice bonus too. But I would like an option to not install its VPN component because it's useless for an average home user and it installs unnecessary virtual network adaptors.

In the current version of FortiClient (5.2.0.0519) the UI has been changed so that there is no longer an "Update now" button. Version 5.0 also updated automatically for me though, except when my firewall (Privatefirewall) blocked it and needed some configuration to allow the various FortiClient processes.

I don't think that there is unfortunately. At least not for the free FortiClient.

I don't know, sorry. I couldn't see it on their website. You could try asking at the Fortinet forums.

I used to use FreeFileSync, but with a large number of files it took forever estimating how much time the backup would take! I now use Create Synchronicity (http://synchronicity.sourceforge.net/) which is small, portable, and fast. It hasn't been updated for over a year, does not have a fancy interface, but it does what it's supposed to to in an easy and fast manner.

Looks great. I nearly rejected it thinking it was not portable, but this link tells you how to create a portable copy: http://www.mytreedb.com/view_blog/a-30-how_to_make_portable_version_of_t... . The notes don't tell you that you also need to manually copy over the folders in \AppData\Roaming\TreeDBNotes 4.

Love my Google Chrome. Been using it for over a year now and other than the obvious uses like Netflix, Google Play etc I find I use it most to turn my fancy Home Theather Surround sound into a wireless bluetooth audio system using Sonza (my Fav), Pandora or other chrome cast enabled apps.

The only bummer is that it won't work on most hotel wifi systems so unless you bring your own portable Wifi Hotspot that both your phone and the chrome cast dongle can connect with basic wifi connection your out of luck.

1 year 44 weeks ago Best Free Email Software andw99

My personal preference is back with Opera Mail. I tried Opera in the latest version this month, and I have to say I am impressed; it offers fast / seamless IMAP and is better than anything I have tried past or present.

Some background... I have tried all of the above, and some not listed here (Zimbra amongst others) - and have (unfortunately) always ended up using the web based offerings of Google and Microsoft and for a long period have done so; but recently they "improved" their offerings to be so "feature rich" that they are too slow to load and use, and now have strange quirks in their UI that cause many a frustration.

And then we get to Thunderbird; for me I find it surprising that this is at the top of any review list - large footprint, slow / cumbersome to use / setup and frequently unreliable. An example, I contracted at a business in recent years where it was used as the primary for the email system; where it did a fantastic job of frequent corruption of its own email database and was almost impossible to restore. Following many wasted hours and lost emails, Thunderbird was dropped and the Linux equivalent of Outlook (Evolution) put in place with much improved reliability.

I have personally tried and re-tried Thunderbird on occasion over the last 4 or 5 years; it keeps coming on top of reviews so I keep hoping it has made the improvements that make it worthy of such a spot; but the end result for me is always the same - I un-install it.

I would advise, to try the following:
- Opera Mail (latest version is very fast, small, reliable and seamlessly integrates with the what is likely the fastest Windows browser available)
- Dream Mail (also very fast, small and reliable; but it doesn't have IMAP)
- Evolution (has everything including Exchange support - but is only a Linux client; its worth running a Linux VM just to use it and get rid of Outlook - it really is very good)

In my experience, too many of the clients are unreliable / slow or are trying to be "clever" when all most users really want is simple, reliable and fast email.

I tested them all and I like to say that I like:
- FreeCommander XE
- xplorer2 Lite
- XYplorer Free

Because they all do FAST text-file-like preview pane. This is very handy to browse/peek through lots of text files.

NEVER use IMGBURN! I just tried it based on this sites recommendation. It hijacks your home page and search engine with "White Smoke" and is a pain to remove. Completely UN-recommended!

I recently started using a Chromebook (and look forward to any tips/tricks/cautions you publish about them!) and -- having been used to using Paint.net for my image-editing needs -- was scratching my head when it came to how I would do so on my Chromebook.

I Googled around and stumbled upon Pixlr for Chromebook: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pixlr-editor/icmaknaampgiegkcj...

It is, as best I can tell, "just" a webpage that functions like an online image editor, but so far, so good.

Hi, Thank you for your input and suggestions, you make a valid point regarding if the backup files will still remain or not after uninstalling the software as I do recall one I tested a couple of years ago actually deleted the backed up files though I do not recall exactly what its name was / is offhand.

The general guideline for any form of sensitive backup data is to keep it off the main system as in use a removable HDD for example to store the backups. However in most cases the software will create it's own file type extension that is not compatible with similar software, there are way's and means around this in certain circumstances but that is not for me to advise here as you can get in a very big mess real quickly.

Hi crombierob, You also have the option to create a Linux based boot CD / ISO though the Win PE CD / ISO is much more comprehensive (as in you have almost all the same options available to you, as you have discovered) what I tend to do is have the Win PE ISO stored in the same location as my current weekly backups and use EasyBCD to create a boot from ISO menu entry for it, so I have two boot options Win7 and also Aomei Win PE, whilst this method has its advantages and disadvantages depending on what it is you wish to do and should not be used as your only emergency recovery method, though for day to day use I find that method is more convenient for me personally.

Hi Remah, I was thinking that also, however said review is quite dated as Aomei does allow you to select files and folders now for backup, though it is primary an imaging program. I am in the process of rewriting some of the reviews and will more than likely move aforementioned program to the appropriate category, Thank you for pointing this out.

Ok, rather than duplicate the content I shall make a reference to it in the other section outlining the basics, they actually have another imaging product out now that is in essence a very simplified recovery solution for the novice user that I shall be reviewing once all the beta bugs are ironed out.

With AOMEI doing an incremental backup seemed to take in the region of two mins longer than a full backup for me at least, however as I am sure you guys are aware this is all subject to many different factors, over all system speed, how much data has actually changed in the incremental backup and so on.

free file sync now has that ability however it is very basic and does slow down operations slightly when your accessing said folder.

Hi morring, thanks for your comment. 11mins is impressive though the speed does depend a lot on the CPU and RAM you have installed I would imagine your hardware is quite recent in order achieve that in such a short time. I am curious though as to why you were unable to use Acronis ?

Hi GoustiFruit, Thank you for your information, funny you should mention it as I have just finished repairing a Gateway laptop (10 years old)and installed Win 8 on it more so out of curiosity to see if it would take it... and yes it did working perfectly... Now I always create a recovery partition in conjunction with my own scripts in order to initiate a "recovery boot process" if the user so needs it said image is always made with AOMEI though on this occasion after running the recovery process the image deployment started and yes it took about 30 minutes plus ! my thoughts were something is not right here... it should take 6 mins max normally... the result was a broken operating system once it did finally boot after looping several times during the POST (Power On Self Test) 100's of corrupted files, I was not happy to say the least, time is money after all... I have contacted AOMEI concerning this problem with Windows 8 the actual problem lies within their boot loader and I have suggested a fix for it although my workaround would have to include a GRUB loader so its not actually a true Windows PE environment... I am quite sure AOMEI will fix this problem ASAP and when they do I shall update this post to reflect that fact :-)

Very sorry for my extremely late reply to your post, I blame it on old age, it has nothing to do with the alcohol consumption that is just a myth... Thank you for the additional information. I think possibly the problem may well lie in the actual BIOS of your system since you have placed a new HDD into an older system it may well not be detecting it correctly until Windows actually boots and loads up the correct drivers for said HDD... that is just an educated guess ! don't hold me to my word on that, as I have seen the same problem myself within some laptops if you place a high speed 7,500 drive into them the BIOS can detect it yes however it does not really know what the heck it is until the drivers are loaded... *shrug* I know your using a desktop system but the same would apply I imagine...
