But I've also used Raymond's MD5 & SHA Checksum Utility which has a better interface. But the free version is, from memory, limited to checking files one by one.

How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 5 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

Whether you want to limit the information on you that's available or aren't concerned with your data available is a personal choice for most of us.
For some of us, having the data available for anyone who wants to pay for it can have a high price. Women are often at risk in cases of domestic violence and stalking (though it's not limited to gender). Having your current personal information (which often contains information about family and friends) available for sale to anyone who wants to pay for it has very real consequences.

Some or most of these companies have policies in place for these types of situations - and you still have to contact each of the data brokers and request your data be removed. That presumes you know your personal data is being collected, can identify which data brokers are collecting it, know how to contact them, and have the time to request removal from all of them.
Having requested removal of my data from several of these services in the course of researching this article I'm having nightmares of the endless CAPTCHA's that would appear trying to remove myself from all of them.

I know someone who has never had a computer, has never been on the internet, and doesn't have a data plan with their cell phone. They exist in public records, and there's a ton of information about them and their family and probable acquaintances on the internet (I checked). I'm just saying that not using the internet will not stop your personal information from being collected. :)

view
How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 5 months 3 weeks ago gruff

Personally, I'm not that concerned with my data being out there. It would take far too much time and effort to prevent my data from being collected. Basically I'd probably have to quit using the Internet ... which I refuse to do. But I do object and object strongly when one of these data pigs begins to harass me and then refuse to remove my data ... like MyLife did for many months. I finally sent them a long email threatening in detail how I'd take them to court in my state and sue them for invasion of privacy, harassment and other assorted charges, noting that Arizona loves to chop down data hogs with huge awards. At that point they removed all my data and I've not heard from them since.

How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 5 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

I understand your point. It's possible that some of the services are on the shady side, but they wouldn't last long, and in this field, trust is everything if you want to stay in business. There may be some fly by nights that come and go, but overall the larger services are interested in staying in business and most seem to take security and personal data seriously.

I haven't checked thoroughly just yet, but I believe that joindeleteme and deleteme are the same company - that would be Abine. They've been around a long time, I would trust them with my data and to handle keeping up with data reappearances if I went the paid route. I don't mind doing it on my own, and have been doing so a few years. I rarely see my name come up in most data broker sites when I check back. FamilyTreeNow has deleted and then published my data a twice so far, I keep an eye on them.
Abine has developed one of my favorite add-ons, Blur, which provides masked address to sites that want an email address. It stores them in your account so you can reuse them again and keep track of what any given masked address was used for.

They also provide a service that generates temporary, one time use credit card numbers for the dollar amount you specify that can be used anywhere so your credit/debit card data isn't used at a site.
I don't have a need for any of their premium services, so I stay with their free service.

Yes, they store your credit card data, so does privacy.com, which also provides single use credit card numbers.

I'm familiar with the privacy.com people from some years ago, when they first started talking about creating privacy.com.
I trust both services with my data. That said, they've been vetted by people who know much more than I do whose judgement I trust implicitly - they've gotten thumbs up and use both services.

I encourage anyone to perform due diligence before making any choices or decisions when handing over critical personal data - by that I mean critical financial data as that has the largest impact if it's breached.
Don't take my word for it, check out any service you might consider using so you have first hand, current information.

Speaking of breaches, I keep wondering where the data from the Equifax breach is. To my knowledge it hasn't surfaced anywhere, which is unusual. It's one of those things I wonder about on a regular basis. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid, but these 'deleteme' type sites that charge you $100 and up to delete your information on all other sites that may have your data ... they remind me of the old senior scams that conned old people who'd been conned by other companies by promising to get their money back for them. That con ripped off billions till the Feds shut them down a while back.

Download or Listen to Boston Public Library's 48,000+ 78rpm Collection 5 months 4 weeks ago kilgore54

This is AWESOME! Here's why...

The year was 1965. I was 12 years old and about to start the 5th grade. My parents bought an old hand-cranked Victrola at an auction. It had about 100 78 RPM records with it. That summer I played, and played, and played those records and there were so many of them that I loved. A few years later we moved out west and they sold everything, including the old Victrola and the records at an auction. As I recall, they got $1.50 for the lot.

Present day: Thanks to this article and the link I went to the Boston Public Library site and got to here so many of the old tunes from my childhood. For a short time today I was twelve years old again. It made me sad because my parents are gone but it also made me very happy to hear these songs. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your kind words.

I uninstalled it from Chrome so searching for it using the steps you mention gave no result, I installed it again and a search using the same search method displays the NoScript extension. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Huh, that's puzzling.
The link to the NoScript extension in the article resolves to the Chrome web store here:

And a search for NoScript in the Chrome web store brings up NoScript, Strip Nag Screen and Script Safe as results.

Get Microsoft's Edge Browser for Windows 7 and 8 6 months 2 days ago Krunk

Yeah, I searched for, and found IE where they hid it after moving to Win10 years ago. The only feature I initially liked in Edge was you can create a Start Menu tile from a webpage. On the other hand, I'll frequently drag a URL from the address bar to my Desktop to create a temporary shortcut using the other browsers, but weirdly, Edge won't let you do that.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm a Firefox user since they were a twinkle in Mozilla's eye years and years ago. I use other browsers but Firefox is my day in, day out get stuff done browser.

Internet Explorer is based on the Trident engine, earlier versions of Edge are based on the EdgeHTML engine. It was developed by Microsoft for Edge. It's mostlyis Trident with updated code. The new version of Edge is based on Chromium, which is the engine that Google Chrome is based on, as well as Opera and Vivaldi.
The new version of Edge is basically Chrome with some things added and some removed. It performs much like Chrome.

There isn't anything particular about the new version of Edge that appeals to me other than it's much faster than Internet Explorer and previous versions of Edge. I use few Microsoft services so the features that integrate into that ecosystem aren't an attraction. I like the use of Material Design in Edge. There are some extensions that I like and use that are available for Edge. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If yanyone wants Internet Explorer 11, it's included in Windows 10 by default. Directions on how to access it are here.
I'm including it because I've been asked more than once why Internet Explorer was replaced by Edge because someone wants IE11 back. It's still there.

Things seem very murky right now about Windows 7.
Microsoft has stated that they are considering paid support for Windows 7 past the end of life date, but I haven't found anything solid or recent enough that I would say yes or no.
It's likely from what little Microsoft has said that they would limit paid support to Enterprise versions of Windows 7.

I think they are offering Edge for Windows 7 and 8.1 because they would prefer people run the newest iteration of Microsoft's browser, from a security standpoint it makes sense.

It's fine with UBlock Origin in Firefox.

In Vivaldi and Opera, it will install - though it will ask for permission to reload so it can work on every tab you have open after you install it.

If you open a new page it seems to function normally. I haven't tested it more than minimally on Chrome, Vivaldi, and Opera. UBlock Origin is installed on Vivaldi and Opera, though not in Chrome (I rarely use Chrome, usually for testing so ad blocking isn't installed).

It's still in beta, XSS (cross site scripting) isn't available and I'm sure there will be hiccups as it heads toward a stable release.

I just downloaded it.
Been in Australia for last 69 years.
Been retired for last 19 years.
I would have registered sometime in the last 19 years, SO NO COMPANY.
I used my normal (NON company) email for the download link.
I cannot find on TradePub's web site where I can peruse my membership details, but I reckon I would have just placed my name in the company name's box.
Rob
PS I was not going to download, as my earlier very brief investigation of developing a web site, got frightened off by the lack of cheapness (hopefully nearly free), and the lack of security in having such a web site.
So probably won't be reading the downloaded PDF book.
So I have done all of this for all of our non US members.

Good suggestion. :)

You would still need an amazon us account to download books.

I suggest you use a browser like EPIC which allows you to specify what country you are coming from. It's free, based on Chrome code and is a useful addition for when you want to do this kind of thing.

You're in luck - Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series is FREE here: https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20080401.

For current books, still within copyright and by authors who are still alive and need to eat, please consider buying an ebook once in a while (and then use Calibre to remove the darn DRM), or just check out what your library has to offer.

Doesn't work for Australia - keeps transferring to Australian Amazon site - even though US site says ships online to international. Australian site does not have any free.

Huh. I'm not sure what genre or category (on the left side of the screen) you were looking at, but the categories I checked before posting this had no romance books. I looked at these genres and their categories: Computers and Technology, Travel, Arts and Photography, Reference, and Biographies & Memoirs.
The landing page has a lot of romance novels though, that's for sure.

I think their classification system is jumbled, but the categories and sub-categories are more reflective of the topic.

You could check the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category for some of those authors, but I'm not sure that any of them would ever show up in the free category. Lee Child (Jack Reacher), Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch) and Robert Crais (Elvis Cole) are all popular authors. I've don't think I've ever seen popular and best-selling authors in the free category, and I've seen only a few authors at that level show up in discounted books. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Amazon's eBooks are downloaded in their propietary format, though they can converted to ePub on the web or using a program like Calibre.

Sadly, that is often the case. :(

I'll amend the article, thank you for mentioning it.

Much of these books are garbage romance written by women. Even free they are overpriced because they would take up valuable space on your device..

These are mostly romance novels. I'm interested in freely downloadable epub mysteries by John Dickson Carr, Ross MacDonald, Ngaio Marsh, Leslie Charteris, P.D. James, and about detectives, such as John Cardinal, Harry Dresden, Salvo Montalbano, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Elvis Cole, Alex McKnight, Logan McRae, Armand Gamache, John Rebus, and Lord Peter Wimsey. I've already got all of Agatha Christie's works.

Best Free Firewall Protection 6 months 3 weeks ago Grey Luddite

Your analogy is akin to "If you can't work through the electronics interface in your 2015 Impreza, you would be better off trading in for a 2019 Volvo." That is, trade the limited sequence of options to set and learn (and then decide whether to keep) a basic FREE Firewall, versus making an entire continental leap to a potentially advantageous OS, but with well-known HUGE learning curves, that in the end might or might not solve networking or security issues, but which will definitely result in weeks if not seasons' worth of effective computer down time while you laboriously and tediously try to figure out the damn Linux galaxy.
I have found it far easier to just use Free Macrium Reflect image software to back up my entire Drive, at least the OS related partitions, then try stuff out without worries. Windows system restore is notoriously inconsistent, regarding what does and does not get properly restored. FWIW, I'm about to dump the Online Armor Firewall I've used to protect an old XP machine, because it unchecks the Trusted box of my Broadcom ethernet controller with every reboot, and constantly pops up alerts about program behaviors that are impossible to distinguish from valid, necessary ones. SpyShelter is another overbearing, overprotective layer that constantly invokes paranoia, without meaningful differentiation regarding actual threat levels from myriad processes. I last paid for a firewall and backup software when tape drives were the benchmark, and both failed when needed. VPN or hardened firewalls may be necessary when using a PC on public WiFi, but for home use within a router-based personal network, Windows Firewall and Security Essentials have worked fine for Win 7 going on ten years.

Check the link for the 'GetDeb Repository' - It's broken. Plus, the web site is really weird - It looks like they transferred a lot of old entries to make it look like a well established blog. There's a recent entry about a new browser called Flock. Flock was a Firefox fork that died a very long time ago.

Have been an ardent user of WinPatrol for decades. However, the program is still available online, but has not had any updates or support since 2018. Still a useful tool for controlling startup and monitoring your system, but not sure how effective it will continue to be going forward with newer malware and OS changes. There is a performance hit as well, but varies with newer systems.

As with the others that wish you well, I'd like to add my meager but heartfelt thanks for the superlative contribution you've made to the world of computing. For a generation that preceded PCs, your site provided guidance that allowed us to comprehend the vast array of software that was out there, what it meant, and how to use it. From the earliest days, your contributions have been a guiding light for the uninitiated, and your creation has allowed many of us to acquire skills that we would never have earned without the overview you presented, and the software we could learn how to compute with. Thank you, and may your life be blessed with happiness and love.

I also find overlays and elements such as "We notice your using an ad blocker" annoying. I've discovered the STYLEBOT addon is pretty useful for hiding many of these types of distractions and showing only what I want to see on the page.
