The best photo/picture editing software I ever found was Microsoft Digital Imaging 2006, but they had to get rid of it and replace it with a lot of expensive garbage!! I am trying to find a program that does the same thing DI 2006 did without having to use stupid "overlays"!!!

Good tip, I always check that first.
If you use Chrome, the latest release (75) has added Reader view but there are a few steps to access it.
Type: chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode section into the address bar and enable the Reader Mode option.
Restart the browser (required).
To use the reader mode, click the top right dropdown menu and select the “Distill page” option.

rhiannon:

In trying to use this app in firefox on the Washington Post website the following occurs:
I click on a story and immediately get a notification that covers about 1/3 of the screen saying I am using an ad blocker. I am using u-block origin. I turn off u-block on the site and still get same notification and can go no further. Any further actions I can so to remedy this? Thanks.

I ran into the ad lock notification, and after disabling uBlock Origin I could read the article.
You re-loaded (Ctrl + F5) the site after turning off Ublock and the overlay still appears?
An odd thing on my end right now - I closed Firefox and shut down the system. I turned my booted my desktop today and I'm on the site with uBlock re-enabled, have 4 different articles open and there are no ad block notifications. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only thing that occurs to me might be an add-on conflict.

Yes, incognito or Private windows worked for some time, but as you say, more and more sites are cracking down on that.
For some time you could access articles at the Washington Post and other sites using Google as a referrer - search for the article title, find the result at the site and you could read it by clicking the link and going to the site. That's being disabled more often as well. Using cached pages in Google Search was an option for a time, but I think most of the paywalled sites have disabled that.

Depending on where you live, sometimes your local public library offers access to some of these paywalled publications, and lets library cardholders access these sites from their home computers. Check with your local library to see what services they offer in this area.

I remember going on a tour of NASA's JPL a few years ago. It was a very informative visit, which included live views of current spacecraft construction from a viewing gallery, entry to the control room from which current active missions are being monitored, the launch tracking room from where actual launches are tracked, and of course a lot of spacecraft history. Quite fascinating!

I'm glad you found it useful.
It is a work in progress, the paywalled sites change things regularly to make access more difficult so the dev has to keep up. Washington Post in particular is pretty aggressive in maintaining restrictions.
It's completely understandable, the print side of news is dying and revenue needs to come from somewhere. I have no problem paying for something I use regularly, but most of these I never visit and the few I do, I don't visit often. I'll drop my ad blocker while I'm at the site, but it's not economically feasible to pay for a yearly susbcription when I visit a site two or three times a year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Mr. George J.

Dear Mr. George, you write "Portable installer".
That is an oxymoron.
If it has an installer it ain't portable, if it's portable it doesn't need/have an installer.

But more importantly and seriously:
Why are you clameing to look for on-demand scanners only?

Emsisoft full version and Malwarebytes can in their paid-for versions run as full resident AV programs. And they both are WAY lighter on system resources than the functionally overburdened McAffee, Norton and so son crap programs (IMHO at least).

I regularly clean up lots of older machines and see it all the time that slow and sluggish systems start to run "nicely" the moment any of these "big name" systems are finally removed.

And you write about Malwarebytes' "nag screen". Heck, Malwarebytes need to make some money, right?
Had you taken the time to look through the settings you might have found the switch to tell it NOT to start with every Windows startup. So the user gets ONE reminder to upgrade to the for-pay version when he/she starts the on-demand scan once a month. Small price for the fastest and in my experience currently by far best malware scanner out there that never ever has conflicted with Windows Defender and/or MS Security Essentials. Again, only my experience.
YMMV

view

As far as I can make out this is the freeware link and I've also changed this in the product details. MC - Site Manager https://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Zemana-AntiMalware.shtml
"The free version of Zemana AntiMalware isn't exactly packed with features, but the upside is that new users should have no problems figuring out how everything works. A scan can be launched in just a few seconds, and it will be over almost as quickly. No scanning options need to be configured, as one click is all it takes."

view
Best Free "Second Opinion" Malware Scanner 5 months 1 day ago George.J

Zemana has a portable version for v2.74 and an installer version for v3.0. I have reviewed v2.74 in this article because it's better than v3.0 which removed some cool features of v2.74, and their creator has left the company, I believe.

Zemana like other Second opinion scanners here doesn't have real-time protection, which is why it's listed as trial version in download page with an option to upgrade. However scanning and removal of malware is totally free.

Do you have any citations for that information? I would appreciate it if you know where you saw it and would pass it along.

My understanding is that Google Drive and Google One are two different services.

Google Drive is a free storage service provided to anyone with a Google account and isn't shutting down according to Google.

Google One is a paid subscription that gives you more storage across Google services and isn't being discontinued as far as I can determine.

Google Photos is not closing or shutting down according to Google.

Google Plus recently shut down. Photos there needed to be moved to Google Photos or downloaded before the April 2, 2019 shut down date if you wanted to retain them. All other Google Plus data could be download via Google's Takeout. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How To Change The Windows 8 Background Colour 4 months 3 weeks ago Stan Schultz

Here's how I controlled the brightness on my laptop's screen, running Windows 8.1.

WARNINGS: While this may differ slightly with other versions of Windows, it should at least give you a starting point. Note that this trick doesn't require fiddling with the registry. Remember: It's always a good idea to create a new restore point and backup your files before making changes to your system! Your mileage may differ.

In the list that follows, the first word or phrase for each paragraph indicates a choice or option you should select. The following text offers comments or elaborations.

Control Panel. If all else fails, try pressing [Windows] + R and typing "control panel."

Power Options. This should load the "Choose or customize a power plan" window. Ignore the screen brightness slider control at the bottom. (You can experiment later at your peril.)

Create a Power Plan. Look along the left margin.

Plan Name. Look for the box towards the bottom. Surely you can be more creative than "My Custom Plan 1!"

Next. (Duh!)

Create. This is at the bottom of the resulting window, "Change Settings for the plan: XXXXXXX." You needn't waste your time fiddling with their pathetic little adjustments on this page. (Why Microsoft thought this page was necessary instead of showing us the whole shebang up front will forever remain a mystery.) This should drop you back to the "Choose or customize a power plan" window with the radio button next to your new power plan ticked.

Change plan settings. Look to the right of your plan name. This should return you to the "Change Settings for the plan: XXXXXXX" window, only this time there's an added link at the bottom.

Change advanced power settings. This should present you with another box/window ("Power Options") with a whole list of power settings. (You can experiment later at your peril.)

Change settings that are currently unavailable. Why Microsoft thought this step was necessary will also forever remain a mystery.

Display. Scroll down to the bottom of the list. Click the little box.

Display brightness. From here it's more or less self-explanatory.

Apply. BE SURE TO CLICK THIS OPTION BEFORE YOU EXIT! Clicking "OK" usually also works, but after all your efforts, why take a chance? (Potentially, some custom Windows' installations made by OEMs - not pointing any dirty fingers here - may change how this works.)

OK. (Duh!) Your power plan is all set and running. Probably no need to reboot. (But if you feel compelled to, be my guest!)

Note that this doesn't change screen color or any image on the screen, only its brightness. And once you learn this trick you can readjust screen brightness and a bunch of other power consumption issues just about anytime it's convenient or necessary.

I presume, because I've not tested this, that this will also control a monitor connected via a VGA cable. However, if you've connected a flat screen HDTV via an HDMI cable (as I have), it will work on your laptop's screen but it may not have any effect on your TV. Control your TV's screen brightness by using the "Menu" or similar button on your TV's remote.

I hope this helps.

What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 4 months 3 weeks ago Australia

Great article. It relates to the "top row of Function Keys" on the top row of most keyboards

However a lot of laptop keyboards also have a Function key "Fn" usually next to the Ctrl Key on the bottom row of the Keyboard
This additional Function (Fn) key, adjust laptop settings including volume, screen brightness, and so on, usually used in conjunction with a F1-F12 key

There is no mention of this laptop related Function (Fn) key in this article, so things are a little ambiguous

What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 4 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

Thanks for your comment. :)

I didn't mention the function keys were on the top row of the keyboard, I'll amend that when I get to my desktop.

I think this line in the first paragraph addresses laptops: "They are often combined with the Alt and Ctrl keys to do certain tasks, and on laptops, can also have dual functions like turning the volume up or down when used with a designated key, usually the Fn key."

What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 4 months 3 weeks ago Krunk

My problem is with a wireless keyboard that came with an HP desktop. The Function keys don't perform what you would expect to be the default---as you outlined above.
Instead, you have to use the Fn key along with the Function keys to rename, refresh. etc. Otherwise they act as "action" keys to change volume, display brightness, et al. There is no keyboard lock/unlock toggle for the Fn key. I learned that on some laptops, you can change the setting in the BIOS---System Configurations, but there is no such setting on my desktop (probably because the keyboards on desktops are interchangeable).
Any thoughts?

view
What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 4 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

I'm not sure about changing keyboard settings the BIOS, I'm not familiar with the options that HP uses in whatever BIOS flavor they use.
I'm assuming your keyboard doesn't have any software that would allows you to make changes like Logitech or Razer keyboards do that let you customize the keyboard.
Outside of getting a new keyboard, I would give SharpKeys a try. There's an installable version (MSI) and a portable version (EXE). I'd go with the portable version.
There's a good how-to at How-To Geek on how to use SharpKeys, it's a few years old but it covers Windows from Vista to 10.
Map Any Key to Any Key on Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista.

If that doesn't work, my last suggestion would be AutoHotkey, it's a great program but there's a learning curve if you're new to that type of software. It would allow more extensive keyboard modification. The link to the How to Remap Your Keyboard How To in the article above has some good AutoHotkey suggestions.

Someone else might have a suggestion and chime in as well.

view
What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 4 months 3 weeks ago Krunk

Thanks for the response, rhiannon.
No the keyboard didn't come with any software and not even the flimsiest documentation.
But I will definitely check out your suggestions when I get some time. My immediate reaction, though, is to wonder whether it's possible to assign--let's say--"reload" to the F5 key when that's not a primary key function like SHIFT or ENTER or SPACE or a specific character.
Incidentally, one of my favorite Function key combinations is SHIFT+F3 which toggles selected text through CAPS, LOWER CASE & SENTENCE &/or TITLE CASE (though it doesn't work in all applications).

Wonderful find Rhiannon.
I much prefer standalone utilities to online services.
Windows freeware can be used indefinitely.
Online services can be taken offline without warning, and have no guarantees that your documents are treated with privacy

All computer users have files and documents and PDFs and images that need editing and adjustments and management.
Utilities like this one are really invaluable.

Thanks again for a very useful find

Hi Rhiannon

You should have a look at PDFSAM Basic ( https://pdfsam.org/pdfsam-basic/ ), which does have a split function along with merge, rotate, alternate mix, extract, split by bookmarks and split by size functions. I have used this program for years now and am very impressed with it.

Split function is operational as explained in Help and in Readme.pdf. Enter desired subset of pages in the "Pages" column.

rhiannon,
i lived on Maui and hiked through haleakala several times. this photo leaves me wondering if it is haleakala crater or one of the cinder cones within the immense crater??
where are kaupo and kulau gaps?

Thank you. :)

I missed it when I read the PDF. I got to the license section and didn't see it. I've amended the article.

I don't know 100% that the image is in Haleakalā. Outside of the link above, I sourced the image at these three sites to see if the image is accurate:

https://matadornetwork.com/destinations/north-america/united-states/hawa...

https://pixabay.com/photos/geology-volcano-crater-haleakala-1836353/

https://unsplash.com/search/photos/maui?photo=sfgH9dXcMRw

I'm assuming the birds and clouds were added in a photo manipulation program before being uploaded to the wallpaper site.

I don't always know if an image is where it says it is. I do the best I can to verify, but other sources may not be accurate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice find Jojo. I installed it, and like it. Good features for an app which is free and ad-free too.

Also, it's from India, which makes me quite proud :D.

I have Rocket Player installed too, which is another music player that I like. Offers good features for free, and is simple too.

Thanks for this, Jojo. Pretty impressive considering no ads or in app purchases. It's very good :-)

Dropbox is now limited to three devices.
There is no indication that your files have NOT been backed up - for whatever reason.
