Updates To My Favourite Disk Space Finder 3 years 10 months ago jms319

Hi,

Thanks for the update of TreeSize. I have used TreeSize in the past but switched to WizTree for the previous years and also tried out some other programs to achieve the same. I found that for me, the two next programs are most valuable. So, I have two other recommendations that are about similar (view where you can gain most space by finding the largest files). I like these two gems because they clearly show where your space has gone.

WizTree 2.01, which is a portable gem, small in size but very fast in finding the biggest files on your PC. It has been reviewed here in 2013 but has recently updated (June 2016, from version 1.07 to version 2.01). It is freeware (as expected on this site) and can be downloaded from: http://antibody-software.com. If I need to know where my disk space has gone, I use this portable gem to find the top 1000 largest sized files.

Folder Size 2.6 (from Sourceforge.net) is another option but it is integrated in Windows Explorer. In XP it worked much better than on 7+ since it showed an extra (optional) column in Explorer (like the columns for filename, time, file size, date, etc.), but with the sizes of the folders in the directory you're browsing. Great to be able sort the size of your folders! Folder Size is not portable. In Windows 7+, Folder Size is also added to Windows but now opens an extra window (on Windows 7+) that displays the size of the folders and files in the folder you explore. This is a good option to implement Folder Size after Windows XP! You can download this gem and try if it works for you from: http://foldersize.sourceforge.net

I'm sure these programs are well worth investigating if they work for you (I guess they certainly do!).

Best regards,

jms319

Excellent article. Looks like it's more useful than EVERTHING by Void Tools which is/was my favorite until now.
Of course searching inside articles (Grepping) is WAYYY better than searching only Filenames. I have been using the MS ability to use 255 chrs for a filename to put key words in it, but now I can look up Paprika and brown sugar and get the BBQ recipe at once. Time? I got plenty of time to wait for it to search and not me. Thanks, Rob.

How does this compare to Agent Ransack? I've been using that for a good while and it does what I need, though I only use a fraction of its functionality. Would this be better for simple text searches in groups of files?

Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 4 years 10 months ago Bruce_Fraser

Rob,
Great find... but what's the problem with search tools which index the hard drive contents? You mention "saves on hard disk space usage" -- surely in the age of TB hard drives, that's not an issue. The benefit of indexed contents is that searches are instant. Really: the answer is there before I even finish typing the search!

Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 4 years 10 months ago Frank D

Its utility for me is reduced to zero by the fact that it doesn't do Boolean searches (e.g., this AND that, this OR that, etc.), so it's limited to either single word searches or you must type in exactly what you're looking for. Adding or omitting a comma, for example, will totally negate the search. I use DocFetcher for searches like this.

view
Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 4 years 10 months ago texaganian

This and everything do completely different things. Everything can find files _by file name_ and using regexes if you wish. It is blazingly fast and yet doesn't have to build or maintain indexes because it uses the one maintained by NTFS itself. Brilliant concept, extraordinarily well done and massively useful.

Astro Grep, on the other hand, like any grep variant or descendant, searches flexibly for CONTENT in files. I haven't looked at this package yet but if it doesn't support booleans that would make it much less flexible than it should be and a deal killer for me.

But there are LOTS of Windows greps out there. I use Bare Grep extensively, though not for the exact same use case as the OP does.

view
Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 4 years 10 months ago David Roper

I tried ASTRO GREP and I can say, I finally found the Boolean part to use, so it DOES have Logic for the words. I still like putting key words into the filenames and using "Everything" for searching. YMMV. I'm off to find and try your "Bare Grep". Thanks.

view
Updates To My Favourite Text Finder 4 years 10 months ago swfan1963

Using the regex below I did a comparison of AstroGrep and Agent Ransack against the same folder tree / number of files, and Agent Ransack is dramatically faster. AstroGrep's results presentation is much nicer, and it saves unprintable characters when saving all result lines to a file. I do lots of FIX log searching, and that's a nice feature. However, for complex searches AstroGrep is so slow it's essentially not usable. Sigh. On that note, jko, have you figured out how to get Agent Ransack to use boolean operators? I've never been able to get it to work (short of using a regex similar to below).

(?=.*sfe)(?=.*mapper)

Finds lines that contain both "sfe" and "mapper"

StartPage is great and I use its Advanced Search page as my home page. However, I also use DuckDuckGo for a lot of my searches. Despite its funny name, DDG likewise searches without tracking, so I have it as my default search engine in the Search field at the upper right of my Firefox screen.

Google may have the big name, but my privacy is not negotiable, so StartPage and DDG keep me blissfully Google-free.

StartPage is excellent. If you want to use other search engines anonymously they also offer Ixquick https://ixquick.com/

It is well worth reading the Settings section as you can enable or disable various filters. These can be saved via a URL without using cookies if you are particularly paranoid.

The slight problem with DuckDuckGo is that they use Amazon servers, it's up to you to decide whether to trust them.

Some of the search settings have drop down menus which are easy to change, however, many settings show two or three options but how you select them beats me! I have tried every way I can think of with no success. I finally gave up and emailed them asking how to do it but nothing heard; shame because if I could skin it the way I want I would have used it.

I started using StartPage a year or two ago because I had become exasperated with Google's constant tweaking of the interface and with features (autocomplete, Google Instant, Google Preview) that slowed the search results and weren't the least bit helpful. I use Startpage for about 90% of my searches. Even though it uses Google, the results aren't the same, so sometimes when I don't find what I'm looking for I resort to Google. StartPage is a good search engine. The fact that it's anonymous is a bonus.

Cynical Concerns:

Any free site will require some revenue stream to exist. Without collecting personal data to sell to advertisers, how do they fund themselves...including startpage itself?

Yes, startpage offers an anonymous search. But once you click on a result, don't you "go public" via that site to your ISP, as well as to Google, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on your choice of browser? And if you have to register to use a site you find via startpage, aren't we "uncloaked" that way as well?

Or am I missing something?

view
Use the Search Engine Called StartPage to Protect Your Privacy 6 years 10 months ago v.laurie Look, you can't go on the Internet without some sort of risk. Nor can you use your phone, your charge card, or drive a car totally risk-free. If you are really concerned, maybe you should try anonymizer services. Testing out Google, Yahoo and Bing search compared with Stat Page they rank SP, Google, Yahoo, Bing. A few things are missed out in Start Page but Google is become messy with advert stuff where SP seems to have less than Google. So strangely I do find SP to be more relevant in my searching.
The more I use Start Page, the better I like it. I use my Google mail for junk and as old friends contact me on Gmail, I have them move to my new, non-Google mail
- mail.com is what I use.
One hundred percent Google free I want to be.

This is a great (and currently relevant) topic. I've provided "support" to many family members over the years and have tried a bunch of different products. For our small business and home we use Zoho Assist which is free for "on demand" support which allows you to connect to another computer or the other user to connect to you. It's an enterprise level product that has worked well for me. Many of our business clients have Apple laptops and desktops and I can connect to them for training as easily as a windows computer.

Used to use TeamViewer, was great. Now its limited to 5 minutes per session if you dont pay. I dumped it.

2 alternatives that Ive tried: Google remote desktop if you are just going into your system remotely or have a google pw on the receiving machine. Smooth operation once you get in. But doesnt work well for support because there still are a lot of people that dont have a Google account.

The other comes standard in the OS from MS: Quick Assist. Its a 2 way auth tool that gives you total control of the users screen. Ive used it several times with very new Win 10 users and with a bit of coaching, get in with no problem. Note that the user must input a code and then in the 3rd part of auth, they must allow you access, so you cant use this without user assistance at the keyboard. Its a me, you, me, you thing. Dont know when it started showing up in Win 10, but its in the latest 2 versions. Not sure about older ones.

Try Quick Assist, its working for me.

Hello Sir,

You have my profound respect for this tool. Every where I end up seems to have it lying around.

I'm an old COBOL programmer, re-invented as a PHP5 web coder, who remembers good old Jackson Structured Programming and still thinks there's a limited place for this inside OO Methods.

Is there anyway to conjure up new symbols: a tiny circle or a tiny star in the North-East corner of a rectangle; plus some square braces big enough to contain a rectangle with an indefinite number of vertical arrows beside the rectangle?

Warmest regards,

Chris

Had a quick browse of this site and could not see an article listing more flow chart programs for Windows (apart from the Vector page).
I am looking for something that would allow me to enter single line captions, and connect them.
The single lines means I can get a lot into the page.
Behind the scene for each caption there would be a paragraph or two of text, that could pop up when I click (or mouse) a caption.
I have a large VB6 program, written when I was less 'brain dead', and I sometimes need to map a flow of logic, to remind myself what was the logic behind some function.
Perhaps being 'brain dead' I am looking for the incorrect category.
Is there some other category of software I should be looking for ?

Rob
PS Selecting the correct installer for 32bit XP Windows, is not easy for the 'brain dead'
It says -
"For installation on Windows XP, you can use the installer without JRE"
But it is not clear if that is a choice when installing that one ?
Or are you meant to choose one of those lower on the page ?

Wow, that's hard core. It actually modifies the registry so that files types now have handlers? Hard core. And is FileMeta also the handler, or is the handler already built into windows, and File Meta is just enabling it for other file types.

When i click on properties -> details of a .txt file withOUT FileMeta, i see properties like name, type, size, date, owner. None of them are editable. I dont see comments, nor tags.

So does FileMeta also add some new propteries, or just make them editable. I assume it does not make the pre-existing ones editable, like eg size; it just makes new ones that it adds editable. Can you add your own fields? Or does FileMeta add certain, pre-specified fields.

You have great tips. Thanks! Keep them coming!

I used Swiftkey for a long time. It had one serious flaw, that it would not always maintain it's status as the default keyboard. You'd have to reset it as the default keyboard after every power-off or restart. (Yeah I tried all the reinstalled and other tricks for months.) When I talked to the developer, he/she gave some excuse about Google not storing programs consistently in the same place. (Blamed Google, oddly while Google kept Swiftkey in "editor's choice" status on Google Play.) When I pointed out that no other keyboard I've used (or continue to use) has ever demonstrated this same problem of loosing it's default keyboard status, he/she kept blaming Google. I even offered to help diagnose the problem, with a very unenthusiastic response.

I do admit that SwiftKey has an uncanny way of predicting the next word, and often remembers a sequence of words from a previously typed sentence (convenient if you forgot to copy in order to paste), by way of next word prediction.

To be fair, with a respectful nod to Gizmo and the good stuff they've sent me, I just gave Swiftkey another try.

2 restarts and 1 power-off with NO FAILURES to maintain default status. Now, this is my first run with Swiftkey on a phone that's less than a month old. It wouldn't be the first time two Android programs didn't get along in my experience, so it's a pity the developer didn't enthusiastically accept my offer to help diagnose the problem. Or, maybe the developer finally stomped the bug. We may never know for sure.

YEAH! The Android L keyboard works perfectly. Couple it with the 'material' skin and it's a winner. The swipe input method works great and there are lots of customization options.

A much better option than AOSP Keyboard or Google Keyboard. And it's free! FY!

Now have a 4.3 Jellybean on 2Gb / 1.7Mhz / 8 core and Swype still Good but Limited / Swiftkey I found just didn't get get the words right without precise finger control plus I didn't like only 3 options / Niveker suggested below TouchPal X Keyboard & I find it the nicest (miss a line of just number keys.) Android or Google Keyboard Themes are poor so prefer Touchpal..... Keep trying things but best keyboard is the Voice Recognition button .. It does really well and typing is becoming a thing of the past as it should be :)

The MS description is somewhat confusing. Where is the PDF guide you mentioned?
