Using Firefox? Update Now 2 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

You're more than welcome. A clean install seems to make Firefox run faster too. I haven't had many issues over time. I export my bookmarks and copy the .xpi (add-ons) files to a folder though my Firefox account will restore preferences and add-ons etc. if I log in. It appears to keep the about:config changes I make as well, but I have them in a text file if I need them.

I'm still running Firefox out of habit. I've been with it since god knows when but I'm using it less and less. That I'm using FF at all is due to add-ons I have that I can't find for other browsers. The other browsers I use are Opera, Pale Moon, Epic, and on occassion, Chrome and IE.

That sounds frustrating, I'm sorry your experiencing that across different browsers.

Thanks rhiannon for the tip-off.
I adopt much the same procedure as yourself for updating and have only had problems once.
They were almost identical to those described by Bobcat 2015.
Since then, OK.

From my perspective, Firefox started trashing and thrashing things after Ver. 56.0. I'm still unable to get to authenticated website I've been going to for years. Now I use 3-4 different browsers every day to be able to access site I've been accessing for a long time without problems. FF used to have everything under control but after 56.0 they started to backslide and are still doing it.

Is anyone keeping Windows 7 past the 14th? Have you discovered any good ways of protecing yourself?

It was a quick update, though that might be because it was discovered so quickly. Mozilla is usually good at patching vulnerabilities pretty quickly.

view
Using Firefox? Update Now 2 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

I'm sorry you had that happen.
I've never had any trouble with updates either, though I usually do a clean install for most of them. I keep things backed up too, external hard drive and USB stick.

When Firefox went from version 70.0.1 to the next version, it totally trashed itself. Tons of complaints on the Mozilla forum. For me it destroyed my userChrome file by ignoring it altogether and my user interface was completely changed tabs, color, everything. I always have updated with no problems until then. I disabled updates in the registry and will not ever update again until they hire some people that know what they're doing. I now keep all important stuff on an external hard drive and it only gets turned on if I need something and I get it and shut off very quickly.

It's not something I would have thought of either, but there seems to be inconsistencies across systems running Windows 10 that are perplexing. Sorry to take so long to get back to you, it took a bit to track down.

Thanks again for bringing it up so it could be addressed. If it doesn't happen on either of my systems but happens to others I don't know about it unless I come across it being mentioned when I'm researching or someone here brings it up.

You didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for letting me know.
The registry key that needs to be modified might not exist in the registry, so it can't be modified. That's what you ran into.
I tracked the issue down and edited the article to include directions if the key isn't there.
Thanks bunches. :)

Let me clarify something, if I may. I mentioned in the article that the site has the directions to reverse this, and I was assuming you went to the site, used the directions, and it still didn't work? If I'm off track then may I suggest you use the process on the Trish Tech site to reverse the process?  Here's the directions to reverse the process from the Trish Tech site (link in the article if you'd rather get them from there):

How to Restore SearchUI.exe Back?
Many people have asked how can they restore SearchUI.exe back. In order to restore it, you have to rename the SearchUI.exe file back to it’s original name.

  1. Start elevated command prompt. In order to do so, press the Win+X key combination and then choose Command prompt (Admin) from the menu that shows up on your screen.
  2. In the command prompt window type this command and press Enter:
    cd %windir%\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
    rename SearchUI.exe.001 SearchUI.exe
  3. Restart Windows and SearchUI.exe will begin working again.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure what that's about.
I have this in place on my desktop and laptop and any searches from the Start Menu are unchanged, pressing the Windows key opens the Start menu. Searches from Windows File Explorer are intact, searches using the Win + R keyboard shortcut are working....all that occurs at the moment is to make sure Search is running in Task Manager or Services. That's the only thing I know of that would cause this, but there could be other causes I don't know about.

I agree Astrolabe.

As with many things it’s a given the media will make the most of any natural disaster for their own purposes so we should always expect sensationalism and exaggeration to be part of their reporting strategy.

I’m originally from the UK and as a keen angler I hated it every year when the rivers were dredged and the weeds cut making these areas un-fishable until everything had moved downstream. Now this doesn’t happen anymore because it costs money. Over the same period thousands of houses have been built on flood plains and the combined effect with the lack of waterways maintenance has made the annual flooding worse, but still it always happened naturally. Just look at the locations of the affected areas and you see places such as ‘Water Lane”, “Bankside” and “Riverdale” etc. These names have been in place like for ever and were originally chosen for a good reason. :)

Now I’ve been living in Brazil for the past 16 years and every year we have the ‘fire season’ in the Amazon region. Almost certainly human intervention has conspired to make this worse but it’s still a natural event although you would never know that from the international press reports and ‘celebrity’ lectures. Here also they allow properties to be built in high risk areas for land slippage and yet it’s a ‘major disaster’ when a few hundred slide down a mountain or a poorly maintained dam bursts.

This is not to diminish in any way the pain and loss caused to those affected but the reasons why and potential preventative measures are highly complex. Unfortunately most of the more effective potential solutions are also the most costly and approval for this level of expenditure is never going to get passed by any mainstream political group. I don't think it will be any fun in South Eastern Australia right now but I do so wish you people would stop using the term "unprecedented". These fires are absolutely not unprecedented. It is so easy to check and see there have been devastating fires just about every decade in recorded history. What is likely to have led to these seeming to much worse is the mismanagement of the National Parks, something not being readily reported in the mainstream.
Just stop and consider, the eucalyptus has evolved to thrive as a result of wild fire. This evolution has occurred over millions of years - hardly as a result of human intervention.

Apache OpenOffice & LibreOffice ( they are related in an historical way) never appeared to get their acts right
LO forum was not easy to use, especially for novices. AOO forum was far more user friendly.
Its a shame they went their own separate ways.

For a few years I used [ Free Softmaker Office ] they didnt realy nag, just the occassional new product push.
Then in Nov-2018 Softmaker offered their office suite for $25 aud (about $20 usd at the time) which was at about a 75% discount.
I jumped at the opportunity.
Over the years I have found German software (not all of it) to be very well planned and documented. Yes I am a DE fan.

[ Free Softmaker 2016] was adequate at the time and being forced to register to use it, paid off in a significan discount.
Softmaker serves my needs well ... I would be over the moon if my 2yr build Addon for Excel would play with "Planner" :(

Permanent might be too much to hope for. I ran the batch file last year, but I checked today after reading your article and found the old renamed file but also a new instance of searchui.exe. I am guessing that it is something that is reinstalled occasionally when Windows is updated. I have a script that I run at start up and will add a line to check if the file exists. Thank you much for the reminder, and thank you much for the many helpful hints that you have shared over the years.

So, this is your idea of a review summary? On this page (techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.html), you list 5 programs, one with 5 stars, two with 4.5 stars, and two with 4 stars. I followed the link from the program with 5 stars (Read Full Review) because I was interested, and it took me to a page that repeated the same summary info on the product with a few more fruitless links and no more detailed info. How are your readers supposed to make informed decisions when links from "summaries" to more detail produce nothing?

Thank you Gizmo!

Although humanity's outlook is (as you rightly pointed out) quite bleak, as long as there is life, there will be hope.
This helps me to overcome paralyzing pessimistic sentiments.
There is no denying that we are heading at an ever-increasing pace, to a stronger tyranny led by the powers that be.
But as with any mafia, there will come a pivotal time when they will battle amongst themselves and unfortunately, the ordinary population will suffer the consequences - but a new day will come out of these ashes!
Common good and respect for the rights and dignity of each person will prevail!

Prayers for Australians and others who suffer such atrocities you mentioned.

I didn't know you were from Australia . Everyone in Canada that I know is wishing Australia well. The two biggest problems we all face today is climate change ( man made or natural) its still a serious problem . The second problem is the uneven distribution of wealth which is causing political problems just about everywhere,
and some climate deniers will use the second issue to do nothing about the first . One day hopefully reason will return .

Best VPN Services for 2019 3 months 4 days ago Anderton

Bit of a sweeping statement, that: "there are no free VPN services". Oh really?
Canadian VPN Windscribe, which has racked up some pretty good reviews over the years it has been in operation, provides a stripped-down free VPN service. I'm using it right now here in the UK. Choice of countries, even choice of servers in some xcities (I can pick from 3 in London) and 10GB a month allowance. Which isn't as good as unlimited, but then you're not paying anything for it. The premium service is good value compared to the large amounts of money being asked by other providers, and Windscribe is the only one -- or so I believe -- to have a special facility, Windflix, to get round Netflix locational problems. It'd be nice if people checked their facts before posting seemingly definitive statements about "no such thing as a free VPN". PS: I've used the annoyingly cutesy Tunnelbear before, but time after time its software created various problems on my PC and had to be uninstalled. PPS: you can actually get a much enlarged Windscribe allowance by browsing the 'Net for Windscribe promotions. Look for any where the voucher code word is COMPUTER, as that is a recurring Windscribe free offer.
** By complete coincidence, one of Windscribe's regular 'special offers' cropped up while I was penning this note. As a former subscriber (the subscription lapsed 3 months ago; I've been using the free service ever since) Windscribe offered a 'Christmas present' of 12 months' subscription for a mere 20 $USD. I'm in the UK, and according to PayPal's quoted exchanhge rate at the time of this offer, the £GBP cost was only £16.27p. I'm amending this post to make it clear that I'm now not on the free Windscribe service and to demonstrate that this company certainly offers excellent discount deals on a regular basis. Other than being a satisfied customer, I have no connection with it, but I do think it'd be worth incorporating in any extended TSA review of VPN services in future.

Prevent Microsoft from Installing Edge Chromium on Windows 10 3 months 1 week ago rhiannon

Good question. :)

It's not important that Edge be blocked per se - I like it and use it and think it's coming along very well as an alternative to Chrome. I like that it uses Google extensions, and Microsoft has started the process of giving developers the ability to create extensions for Edge Chromium so it looks like they'll have some of their own from outside sources.

What's important is that people don't have a new browser installed without knowing about it, and depending on what browser is used, being caught out with a new browser they didn't know about and may not have wanted set as a default. Internet Explorer 11 is still available in Windows 10 (for now) and people still use it.

I know several people who've used Firefox for many years that upgraded to Windows 10 and had no idea Edge was a web browser. They didn't know what it was so they never used it. I don't think Microsoft will set the new version of Edge as the default after it's rolled out as a Windows 10 update, but I don't know that they won't. Windows 10 has changed defaults for other things on my system (and others systems) without warning, sooooo.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Microsoft has released early builds of Chromium Edge for Windows 7 and 8.1 so earlier Windows versions will run Edge, but it would be a voluntary download for earlier Windows versions. The previous version of Edge wouldn't run on Windows 7 or 8.1. This Chromium based build will - giving people on earlier operating systems an alternative to Google.

Prevent Microsoft from Installing Edge Chromium on Windows 10 3 months 1 week ago Mike29322

Why is it so important to block this update. From the post above, it sounds like a solid alternative to the presently existing Edge and other broswers, especially for those of us for whom the word "Google" leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
