I'm strongly dissagree, if you have high quality sound system foobar200 is only viable choice because foobar2000 mandates sample-exact seeking for the sake of accurate timing and processing. BTW with that kind of audio system you will be able feel the diference on your own. Free sowtware doesn't mean that it will be play on 10-cent headphones ) musicbee even can't play .iso.wv :( foobarr and AIMP can.
And about AIMP insecurity...Really ? Because it made by russian developer and hosted there :)
for example vanilla winamp can't separate tracks from .flac.cue ) AIMP can ) and new AIMP version (4.0) is really great.
And one feature that i really appreciate - AIMP has built-in-out-of-the-box-one-click ability to record streaming audio, for example internet radio ) with user defined save_format and split_track options. English translate included.

ps. I often use your site for choose some software, and always your ranking was well grounded, but not this time :)

Best Free Antivirus App for Android 7 years 2 months ago skittleys

(1) Where's MalwareBytes?! This list was updated December 12, almost 2 months after its long-awaited arrival in Google Play.
(2) You have done an excellent job highlighting apk scanning, privacy features, and various utilities. However, you touch very little on the biggest malware threat of all: those embedded in pdfs and other common files. Many of these apps do not offer real-time scanning of new non-apk downloads. And several—including your new favourite app, 360 Mobile Security—offer no file scanning capabilities at all. At the very least, this should be added to the "con" list. This is a much more critical feature of any antivirus app. While phone finding, RAM monitoring, and backups are wonderful, they are not a necessary component of an anti-malware solution, and there are many excellent free apps available that provide these services. I—amongst others, I imagine—would rather use an app that provides full anti-malware protection and no other features, as opposed to a security "suite" that provides many services but no protection against documents etc. Thankfully, there are quite a few apps that offer this protection, but this list is more or less ignoring this aspect.

I have been running BOINC since 2008. Please educate yourself before making such statements. There are many more projects than SETI@Home. Some have more merit than others. SETI is simply the most well known and has introduced most users to the BOINC platform so is the most often cited. BOINC is open source freeware that has nothing to do with any government. Idle computer time can be used to help find cures for AIDS, cancer, ebola, etc. or help study the orbits and properties of near Earth orbit asteroids, find prime numbers... There are literally dozens of projects to choose from. Not to mention a friendly and active online community with users willing to help with issues far beyond the scope of BOINC itself.

Best Free Download Manager 7 years 4 months ago skross

Free Download Manager(FDM) was top rated and i was looking to increase my download speed, so I installed it.
In chrome, the Win7 iso download (3.1gb) was varying from 250 -400k/sec download speed, with an estimated time of 4 hours.

FDM was moving at a snails pace of 70kb/sec with an estimated time of 14 hours.

I installed UGet and its running super fast at 1.9M/sec with a total time of 29 minutes.!

Perhaps there's some tweaking that can be done within FDM to improve its performance, but straight out of the box, in my situation, UGet is vastly superior.

Fyi I have Cable Internet 30Mbps service.

Best Free Digital Image Editor 7 years 5 months ago SkuterB

I have used this site for a couple years and have been very pleased with it.

Finally registered today with an FYI and a question.

I have used Photoscape for awhile for a couple of its features.
Today it prompted me to download a new version 3.6.5 which I did.
After downloading I scanned the file with my anti-virus and Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes gave a warning that it contains OpenCandy.

I re-scanned the last version I had downloaded v3.6.2 and it does not contain it, so it appears it has been added recently.
I know there are different views on OpenCandy and I understand that.
(My opinion is I don't look for trouble.)

My question is has anyone installed the newer version and does it give an option to opt-out?
Thanks...

AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News. 6 years 8 months ago SkuterB

I'll second that mouse53, with 1 clarification, I do understand that freeware creators need, want or hope to make money on their software and I will help them when I can.

It always seemed simple to me, IF an adware or toolbar developer is truly proud of their software, all they have to do is add a little blurb during the freeware installation telling you it is available and what it does and then have an UNchecked box where I can opt-in if I am interested.
Having a hidden or difficult to find box that is already checked and I HAVE to opt-out to avoid is underhanded no matter how you look at it.
IMHO That includes Adobe w/McAfee.

I also appreciate Gizmos giving me a heads-up when a program is infected with un-necessary and probably unwanted add-ons.

HxD 4 years 6 months ago SkuterB

I'm confused.
I have been using the installed English version of HxD since 2010 v1.7.7.0
It's the same version that is available now.
I have compared what I downloaded then and what is available now and they are identical.

All the file features still work fine, including the compare feature.
I see no mention of a trial or Pro version on the site.

Also (from the review), I have never had any problem over-writing a file.
After I complete any changes it asks if I want to save them.
If I say no, original file is unchanged.
But I always backup prior to changes just in case.

I tried the portable version today and it works the same.

I have never needed the Disk Editor or RAM Editor, so I cannot comment on them.

This is a great little program. I don't use it a lot,
but when you need something fast & easy, nothing else will do.
Just use VERY carefully.

Windows 10 Editions and Upgrades Announced 5 years 9 months ago skwirlinator

AndyR, Thank you for the KB #s, I will check...
I started my Win 7 PC this AM to an icon on the clock task bar to reserve my Win 10 free upgrade. I tried to quickly dismiss it but there is no ready option. So I clicked it and watched the screenplay.
There is nothing that appeals to me at all. I don't like Win8 or 8.1 and I am quite happy with Win 7.
I purchased my PC because it had Win 7.
Part of my updating routine is to always update my software. Now, I can't even trust that.
Is there a way to tell right off, if MS is infecting my PC with updates for Win 10?

Windows 10 Editions and Upgrades Announced 5 years 9 months ago skwirlinator

v.laurie, First, Thank you for this article!

I use my Win7 WMP extensively. I purposly converted my entire CD collection to electronic and sold my CD player and gave away all my CDs.
I have WMC for my X-Box 360. The thought of having to use WinAmp is not appealing to me. I want my WMC.
Since it seems the trend is pushing toward cloud computing I figure Microsoft's solution will be to sell an app for your WMC online. This is speculation on my part but I see something like that happening. It seems like everything is moving to mobile computing. I'm not interested in paying more money to enjoy something I already paid for.
As for the replacement of WMC, I believe MS will have it all sent to a cloud. The player app will access the cloud for the play files and you will get slanted advertisements. You will see ads based on your photos, videos and music selections.
Microsoft couldn't pay me to upgrade to Win 10

Hi Gizmo Gang,
Gizmo has been my favorite source for information and freeware for a very long time. Kudos!

Might I suggest an article that tells how to Prevent a Win 10 upgrade and how to remove the KB files that Windows Update presets on your system.
I've learned my lesson with the common piggyback ware from freeware installations but I used to trust MS to only update the OS. The days of blindly clicking update are gone. I have already set Windows update to 'ask me before installing' but do I have to research every single update now? There must be a better way?

This Amazing PDF Reader Is Portable And Tiny 7 years 7 months ago SmAppsFan

I am with you on incomplete uninstall routines. They annoy me too, and I will search the Registry and file system in order to manually wipe out the vestiges of old installations. Call me compulsive. There is a portable version of Sumatra, downloadable from http://portableapps.com/apps/office/sumatra_pdf_portable, already referenced above by another reader, which gets around that. Obviously it will not help with the differential rendering quality you experience.

My default viewer for well over a year has been PDF-XChange Viewer, link http://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer, also previously mentioned and which also has a portable install available. It does not open as quickly as Sumatra, but in my experience it is quicker than Acrobat or Foxit Reader.

Some Notes On Trying Out Metapad 6 years 6 months ago SmAppsFan

I have been using Metapad for over a decade, as a Notepad replacement rather than as a serious editor. Have never felt the least desire to change editors, in that limited context.

For most editing of larger files you will want code highlighting and the ability to configure keyboard shortcuts.

For pure load-and-search operations on large files I usually use WinVi (http://www.winvi.de/en/). WinVi also has a Hexadecimal mode.

Will take a look at the most recent incarnation of EmEditor, which I used to use at version 1.xx, because it could hot link http://... text before that was routine, and Glogg.

I consider this exceedingly poor behavior on the part of any installation. I undid those associations and then wrote the company and told them as much.

Do not know if anything has changed since then -- version 5.5.

Thunderbird:
+Like the idea of mail+RSS feeds in one place.
-Managing subscriptions is not well thought out. For example: Can't create a new folder in "Managing Subscriptions". There's also some funk stuff it does when moving folders. There's a lot of steps involved to do other tasks.

Best Free RSS Reader-Aggregator 6 years 6 months ago snakyjake

QuiteRSS has SOCKS proxy support in v0.16.2 (18.08.2014)Revision 3378, which is in beta right now.

QuiteRSS is very fast and light weight.

I'm running a portable version.

QuiteRSS has some RSS formatting issues that I'm trying to work out. Right now it strips out the formatting while other RSS readers will show me the RSS feed's posting with full format. There is an option to see the feed post as a complete webpage, but that's the entire full framed webpage. Other readers do a better job. But this may be an option I can't find, a bug, or a future enhancement.

view
Best Free RSS Reader-Aggregator 6 years 6 months ago snakyjake

RSSOwl does require the Java runtime. But it does appear RSSOwl runs binaries, hence the .EXE as I see in my folder.

What I meant by "no Java problems" is that I haven't noticed any Java performance issues. I know nothing regarding potential Java security issues.

The advantage is the OS portability. I can run RSSOwl on my Windows machine as well as my Linux machine. There's also OSX, or running with Eclipse. There's also a non-installed/portable version if you want to run without installing.

I critically depend on RSS feed readers, and RSSOwl is my top choice (SOCKS, open source, features). Though QuiteRSS might replace it if it can properly format a feed. I like my RSS feeds with my Thunderbird email, but the RSS management is miserable. Additionally, it might be better to keep the email/rss separate so I can have the freedom to choose which ever application is best at what it does.

2) When OpenDNS blocks a site, I'm giving the domain, but I'm not given the full URL. This is a problem because when I'm doing a search, I open a bunch of tabs, then I look through the tabs to read. But when OpenDNS blocks a site, it doesn't give me the full URL. So when I do bypass the site, I have go back to my search and fetch the results again. Encryption is Not Enough 5 years 4 months ago snakyjake

My main concern is on a Windows machine where other people have sys admin rights to read the user directory, malware, etc. All the tools I've seen have you decrypt the volume, which means the information is now vulnerable. For example, I have my USB drive encrypted, but I decrypt it so I can use my portable email client or RSS reader. But this also makes the entire volume vulnerable since it is decrypted. Ideally I want realtime encryption/decryption where the storage remains encrypted, but opened decyrpted at the time needed, and not decrypted for any other user or unauthroized use. The workaround is multiple encrypted containers: some decrypted full time, other decrypted only when needed. Another workaround I'm looking into is a virtual machine where I have more control.

view
Encryption is Not Enough 5 years 4 months ago snakyjake

Yes, you understand correctly. I'm trying to evaluate some folder locking/hiding utilities to see if those kind of apps can keep other people from accessing my data. When I attach my USB drive (using VeraCrypt or similar), I don't want to automatically expose all my data to everyone that has access to the machine. I also don't want search indexing the drive/folder. I want my data to be only my data.

view
Encryption is Not Enough 5 years 4 months ago snakyjake

I've done some more product evaluations. Volume/container encryption makes data 100% vulnerable when the volume is mounted. It simply looks like an unencrypted drive when mounted. I'm still trying to find a solution that won't leave my data vulnerable when I'm using my data.

I'm looking for a utility to validate the integrity of my archived photos and detect bit rot. I'd like the program to store the checksum in the file properties, unless that would invalidate the checksum. If it does invalidate the checksum, then simply saving to a new file. The next feature is to run validation tests on a schedule, detecting bit rot and alerting me. The ideal solution will also have parity information so the photo can be recovered.

Photo bit rot of archived photos is a big concern of mine.

Thanks. Jake.

Alternatives:
FileVerifier++
wxChecksums

I'm looking for something that uses better algorithms; MD5 is real slow.

Most of the suggestions require some sort of dependency on someone else. I prefer CryptSync to avoid dependencies.

Increase Your Browsing Speed And Privacy With Ghostery 6 years 6 months ago snakyjake

"some sites won't show content until some elements are turned off"

I'm giving Adguard a try because the problem mentioned above. Not sure if AdBlocker is working better or solving the problem...but it sounds like it.
"Adguard can handle Anti-AdBlock scripts. You won't have to turn off the AdBlocker anymore to be able to visit the websites that are using such scripts. Just send a complaint to our tech support and we'll handle it."

Protect Your Online Privacy and Speed up Browsing with Privacy Badger 6 years 4 months ago snakyjake

I read the privacy statement on Google Chrome Store. I've become paranoid of what capabilities extensions are allowed to do. I feel like I'm inviting the trojan horse.

1) Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
2) Change your privacy-related settings.

I always wonder if or how much better a paid product is by comparison. I wouldn't mind paying a small amount for a much needed feature that doesn't exist in the free/open products. This change is welcomed.

This Privacy-Oriented Browser Blocks Ads Too 5 years 5 months ago snakyjake

The forum owner isn't very active, and a lot of user posts are ignored.
The browser isn't portable or self contained (typical of Windows apps).
The browser has a lot of potential, but want to see it better supported.

New Chromium-Based Browser Includes Add-Ins As Standard 5 years 4 months ago snakyjake

My major concern is privacy. It may not be sending info back to Google, but is it sending info to someone else?
Like there's a portable and contained version.

I've been noticing changes to the toolbar that have included Amazon and Ebay. I didn't add them.
The probability of Slimjet (or anybody) doing something completely for free (zero money involved) is not likely. Slimjet is motivated by something.

Is there a reason why EFF's own Privacy Badger fails to protect me from their own test site? Doesn't give me much confidence in Privacy Badger.

I'm leaning towards Opera or Epic for the VPN. But I assume the VPN is tracking me for advertising purposes, but better than my non-anonymous ISP, with my identity, tracking me.

Bitwarden - All the password management you need! 2 years 2 months ago snakyjake

I don't want to create a Bitwarden account, it turns me off.
I don't want anything that can possibly be between me, my data/info, and the site I visit.

Is it better to have Malwarebytes collect my browsing habits, or these sites with unwanted content?

I don't like this idea from Malwarebytes:
"Communicate with cooperating websites".
