Best Free File Copy Utility 7 years 3 months ago Stereoeggs

Hi, all....

The revue of FastCopy mentions it can be used without being installed. Boy, do I feel dumb for asking, but could someone tell me how I go about doing that?

Also, I have an older rig running WinXP 32-bit Pro that seems to have caught a "virus" (that somehow got by my always-updated, real-time-scanning, McAfee anti-virus software) that won't let me connect to the internet, won't let McAfee run a virus scan, and won't let me copy any files (the "Copy" command is there, but the "Paste" command is absent after I highlight files and click on "Copy").

Given the situation above, can anyone suggest how I can copy the files on my C: hard drive to an external hard drive, in an effort to save them, before I (apparently have to) re-format my C: drive?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, guys.

Hi,

Also when you are short of USBs.
e.g. A laptop with 3, one is busted, the 4-in-1 units don't work.

You need to use the 2nd USB for a backup unit, or anything.

Replace the keyboard with onscreen, and you can function pretty much normally.

One bottom line is that some systems of the grandmothers, or anyone less tech-savvy, gets trashed.

Look, they wanted to foist a Uniblue registry product on you, a registry cleaner that has trashed systems for years.

The small benefit you might get (product A instead of B) is at the expense of the freeware community as a whole.

Two New Ways to Boot into Safe Mode in Windows 8 6 years 10 months ago stevenamills

I've been working with MS stuff more years than I care to remember and they still don't get it - AT ALL. Most of the time you need Safe Mode it is because normal mode won't work, so method 1 is worthless and Method 2 will gradually fade away.

Probably coded by the same genius that removed the repair install.

I couldn't agree more. Sadly, when these sites keep hiding behind a wall like this, it's frequently because they spent way too much time trying to monetize and way too little time on useability. I have nothing against making a buck, but authors / site owners need to get priorities straight. I won't be giving it a try either.

Using Windows 7 And Linux On The Same Computer 1 year 3 months ago stevenfbtube

I would install Ubuntu using the 'something-else' option, specifying your partitions & ensuring you don't have the 'format' check-box ticked.
This will wipe system directories, install then restore any additional programs you have installed (if from Ubuntu repose only). If your 'breakage' is in $HOME (a user setting) then the breakage will likely remain as that file won't be touched. Of course backup first (we make mistakes, and the format-checkbox is kinda small). Best Free Instant Messaging Client 7 years 3 months ago Stilez

Gizmno - you might want to consider Jisti (https://jitsi.org) as a very strong contender. Things I like:

Free/open source
Very actively developed (as at 2013) and dates back to 2006 ish so a decent history
Cross platform (including x32, x64 and msi on Windows, which suggests devs have care and forethought)
Very wide range of protocols
IM, file transfer, voice, video
Appears mature

And as extra bonus features, it's just streets ahead on core infrastructure:

IPv4/IPv6 automated
NAT traversal
DNSSEC
About the only IM client to support open encryption standards built into the base code - OTR is often a plugin but here it's built-in, and Phil Zimmermann's STRP/ZRTP - about the only really secure standard for VoIP - is also built in.
Video/voice conferencing
SIP
A load more.

You might want to review and include it.

view
Best Free Instant Messaging Client 7 years 3 months ago Stilez

Also worth considering:

It won't matter to all users, but it's worth considering how much an IM client mitigates or exposes private data. An IM provider stores IM's and contact details they 'see', but a multi-client whose provider logs extra data exposes the user on all their IM systems, not just one.

In this area, Trillian keeps a copy of the user's contact list in plaintext. The contact list is used for sync purposes, so it's legit, but it's not encrypted on their servers as (say) logins are. So contact renames, groups, etc are vulnerable. They may change this in future, but at the moment it's worth an observation as strong security is a good thing.

How to Check for Hacker Activity in Your Microsoft Account 6 years 5 months ago stratos

It won't help you. Think about it: no one is going to find out your password by guessing, there are simpler ways (I'm talking about phishing, etc.). And changing password now and then ain't gonna help. So if someone really needs your account, you will not know it by checking "recent activity". You'll end up just being unable to log in.

The only reasonable part of this tip is the one about 2-step verification.

Download A Full Diagram Creation Program For Free 4 years 1 month ago stretcharm

Yed is an amazing free that's made a few appearances in the techsupportalert pages over the years.
It can do Business processes (BPMN), organisation charts, network diagrams, flow diagrams, UML, entity relationship and organisation trees etc etc etc. It's also is easy to use, supports custom icons and has superb export options.

I've been using it for over 5 years after trying to find something I can use to quickly create diagrams that allow me to change nodes around without losing the links or spending ages formatting.

So much quicker than Visio to create and prototype diagrams giving you the power to shape your brain dumps.

Added bonus is the layouts. Where it automatically makes your diagrams look good.
It's particularly good at BPMN with swim-lanes

I have Visio at work, but if I need to do a quick diagram that others don't need to edit I'll always go for Yed.

Underneath the diagramming is graph data so if you need you could import a large excel document to model thousands of interconnecting nodes. Each Node and edge can have properties that can be used to set the visual properties.

It's also free for commercial use.

Heartbleed Effect: Passwords You Need to Change Now 6 years 2 months ago stubbyd

Surely with the way the bug works that it actually makes sense to hold off changing until the affected sites confirm they've fixed the bug?

If you change now you run the risk of being caught out by the bug... It's a catch22 situation really.

view
Heartbleed Effect: Passwords You Need to Change Now 6 years 2 months ago stubbyd

Yes I saw that - but I think you missed my point entirely. Your article advocates updating passwords at infected sites - I'm saying that's a catch22 if they are affected by the bug because there's a chance you'd have your password stolen due to the bug. Not only would you then have to change it again when they do fix the bug you may also have lost your access.

view
Heartbleed Effect: Passwords You Need to Change Now 6 years 2 months ago stubbyd

However - the issue was that you sidestepped what I said, then added to your original article with the comment rather than either agreeing with me or completely disagreeing (I'm a big boy, I can handle someone not agreeing).

I suspect it was a case of you rushing your answer rather than just (dis)/agreeing that this is the case and then pointing out the link, etc ...

Still - I guess this will get deleted as you have been rather heavy handed with moderation. And I thought gizmo's was all about discussion ... I'm sure Ian wouldn't have shut this conversation down....

However, the best thing about GoogleReader was the ability to share and/or comment on feeds (in FeedDemon) and share to subscribers via GoogleReader share. GoogleReader deleter the share feature for new users some time ago, but the oldsters still got to share.

So, what will replace sharing feeds with others? (via an RSS)?

Sharing to those specific sites means someone has to have an account to see the article shared. Will any provide an open feed to the shared content, like GReader used to? I would post the shared feed to my websites and folks could subscribe from there or in their own reader to my shared reads.

Feeddemon allows sharing by email which means a Wordpress or Tumblr could provide the library location (post by email) and those have feeds of tagged posts.

Sounds like a hassle...

Best Free Notes Organizer 6 years 10 months ago substorm

I have searched the entire internet to find a notes organizer with the following features:
- Search as you type (find all word instances just like in CintaNotes and ResophNotes)
- Rich Text support including images
- Flagging
- Alarms/Reminders like in Pnotes
- Re-arranging of notes in a list using shortcuts or dragging
- Category folders (could be in a folder tree)
- create notes from clipboard
- offline
- portable

The closest is Evernote but with their enforced cloud approach it won't work for me.

If ResophNotes could store images, I would be set. I find ResophNotes much better than CintaNotes since ResophNotes just works. For instance, try searching in CintaNotes for a repeating word in a large note. It displays the found instances in the preview but once you open the note, you only see the first found instance. A huge bug!

If you know anything that has similar features, please let me know.

When you say "Windows' sort of clumsy basic method...", are you referring to the Snipping Tool? In Win10, it has matured a bit and allows delayed screenshots.

Using Firefox for about 3-4 years now, very good.
But, what really disappointed me is that Firefox always hang when Flash contents are loaded. Flashblock can no longer block Youtube on latest Firefox 21 beta.
Internet Explorer is a very good option, with its deep integration with Windows 7, and is the first browser that I had ever used and know, and seems most friendly with screen readers.
But, IE has limited number of add ons, and I need to use third-party programs to back up my profile!
Chrome looks interesting, but screen reader, particularly Jaws, does not work too well with it, but at least it does not hang when Flash contents are loaded, and like FF it has dozens of extensions, the combined address and search box is very cool (IE has it too), the sync feature rocks, and starts up very fast.
Now I don't know whether to remain using Firefox or go back to IE. I will have to leave Chrome out until screen reader support has improved.

Oh wow, it worked! Thanks very much for this tip! I didn't even know that this feature was there!
Mozilla should make it visible to normal users though, since normal users would probably not bother with about:config thing; rather, they will probably look under Firefox options window.

I would agree on those points, but I think the reason for Firefox's slow startup is because it have to load its components, while with IE some components of the browser is already loaded along with Windows.
Now I'm using IE, and I like its Windows intigration features, but too bad few sites took advantage of it.
I do still like Firefox for its customization and no rebooting the system when installing, and also of its huge add on directory, and also its rapid development cycle compared to that of IE.
Also, IE have 1 very annoying problem, and that is it loads some unnecessary iFrames and adds, even with the 'do not track' feature enabled, while Firefox didn't and so thus loads a bit faster.

After my try with Avira, I am now considering whether I should change my AV. I like MSE for its non-intrusiveness, but the new versions rarely get released. Avira, on the other hands, has new versions more often, but it may have some annoying popups that I may not like too much.
I'm on a core I5 with 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate X64, and MSE didn't seem to eat too much resources, but I've heard from some of the comments that Avira doesn't use up as much resources as MSE.

Rocketdock is great, but after I reformatted my PC, I felt too lazy to install it, Windows 7's superbar is great with jumplists similar to OSX's dock (although less customizable). For me the Windows 7 taskbar is more than enough, the higher your screen resolution is, the more that can fit on the taskbar.

I have to agree with those points. Rocketdock is indeed the greatest, as I've seen it featured in almost all Windows - Mac transformation packs/tutorials.
Also one unique feature is that I can pin specific files to Rocketdock while the Windows 7 taskbar can't!
Although, I may decide to install Rocketdock later, if I feel that I want something cool for my desktop.
One question, are any of these still in development? Rocketdock I think has no updates for several years and it kinds of becoming outdated.

What about Bitcomet? I had not tried it, but it seems to be a clean install without toolbars, according to my latest install in Sandboxie.

The statement that Foobar 2000 cannot convert files is not true. I've tried and I was able to convert .m4a files into .mp3 ; although you need the Lame binaries though for it to work, but it's very good - it preserves embedded album images when converting, unlike NCH Switch Sound File Convertor.

How To Write Down Your Passwords Yet Remain Secure 7 years 1 month ago supanut

Good idea,
But what about those visually impaired? They can't physically write things down; me included. Using Keepass is good idea, but if they, like me, have long passwords and they need to show the actual password to let screen readers read to them, then that's not safe, since everyone in the room can hear the actual password being read out loud.

Google Keep is also good, most important for me is to keep notes across all devices, I just keep random notes, copy web snippets, reminder, alarm, etc. don't need editing, so Keep is perfect for me.

Re Mobysaurus

Anyone planning to run the above on a Win 7 64bit or higher machine needs to download an updated DLL file in order for it to work. I couldn't find much on it other than an obscure post by the developer himself.

After installation the current "dc_lic.dll" needs to be replaced with the updated one.
Download the above named file & then paste same into the Mobysaurus directory which will replace the origional 32bit dll. After that it should work fine.

Link to the developer's note is here : http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=18066.0;wap2

Link to the updated version of said file is on the page.
[Moderator's note: Link to direct download of file edited out. Not allowed]

Copy & paste the new "dc_lic.dll" into :

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mobysaurus Thesaurus

Cheers
