Still My Favourite Free Office Software Suite 4 years 2 months ago seahound88

For over a decade, the Calvinist in me saw the use of free word processing software. They all drove me nuts, every single one falling over - frequently, across an array of top-end laptops. I moved excitedly from one different brand of word processing software to another to another.

In the finish I gave my money to Microsoft for their Office Suite. What heaven. Rock solid Word and XL. Worth every cent. And the amount of Google help for Word and XL is vast; plus a million macros. Heaven.

I have been a devoted supporter of Gizmo Richards since the days I excitedly looked forward to his monthly newsletter. He has kept me at the leading edge of software for at least a decade. The biggest of thanks and a Merry Xmas Gizmo.

And to Gizmo's helpers like Rob Schifreen, also the biggest thanks. Your guidance is invaluable.

How to Get Help with Windows 8.1 Upgrade Problems 7 years 3 months ago SeamusH

I had no dramas upgrading on my desktop but my netbook, an older MSI, didn't have sufficient screen resolution to open the App Store. While I accept that Windows 8 wasn't recommended for the netbook, I do find it a ludicrous situation whereby your screen resolution prevents you from downloading a file - why can they not provide an alternative link to access via the browser? Why must it only be done through the app? In the end, I got around it by connecting my desktop monitor and, while the download was very slow (6 hours or so), it ran okay thereafter.

BTW, app/screen-resolution issue aside, I can highly recommend running Windows 8/8.1 (with Classic Shell) on a netbook - boot-up times are way faster than XP, although, who knows, maybe it'll fry my CPU one of these days :)

After reading several positive reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials, I decided to give it a shot thinking that my PC would be well protected.

I then came across this article today which I think should be shared will the readers of this forum who believed in MSE. After reading it, I quickly removed the product and switched to Avira Free for now which no longer has the nag screen.

http://dottech.org/130828/microsoft-admits-microsoft-security-essentials...

Since there is now so much controversy, imagined or real concerning MSE and its effectiveness, I think Gizmo should remove MSE as a recommended product until we learn more.

I did read the comments, and the person to who you refer in your quote is different than the one in the quote I mentioned.

Regardless, if Microsoft Programming or Software Managers cannot get their stories straight, they both seem contradictory to me, I would rather deal with a product that is more proven and established as effective.

view
Best Free Antivirus Software 7 years 4 months ago searchlight

If you like MSE, then stick with it. It is just a matter of opinion.

view
Best Free Antivirus Software 7 years 4 months ago searchlight

If you look closely at the articles, these are not examples of media manipulating readers but contradictory quotes by Microsoft's own people. That being said, Microsoft should be making one consistant statement across the board regardless of test results or efficacy debates.

If a company cannot, will, or appears not, to stand behind their security product, then I personally am not comfortable using it.

Like I intimated earlier, useage boils down to personal preference.

Not for nothing, could you elaborate on how Windows Defender improved in Windows 10 despite the bashing it still, and always gets?

If it is better, why are others still not using it? Or is it the negative, or maybe proven hype?

Thanks

The Simplest Way To Improve Your Web Browsing Security 5 years 9 months ago searchlight

Beware when installing and/or purchasing a VPN of the limitations imposed by the software vendor. I purchased [edited], and discovered to my dismay that they block outgoing gmail as their VPN was used by spammers. I tried establishing Gmail as an exclusion within the program but that did not work, either. Could not send any outgoing smtp emails using Thunderbird configured for Gmail unless I turned [edited] off.

This was a hassle, so I uninstalled the program, and received a refund.

I am trying VPN browser extensions as a substitute.

If you want something that will work in the interim for your desktop, there is a Gmail Desktop app called GMDesk which you can use instead of your browser.

Since it is direct to Gmail there is no security setting difficulties.

However, it is not a traditional email client.

Here is the link: http://robertnyman.com/gmdesk/

I finally enabled Thunderbird to work with Gmail Enhanced Security. I enabled two-step verification on my Gmail account.

One has to enable two-step verification, and establish an application specific password that you substitute for the regular Gmail password that you inserted in your email client.

I found this link helpful in resetting Thunderbird. Now it works like a charm.

After using 2-step verification with App Specific passwords for several days, I decided to turn it off, and enable access for less secure apps again.

The reason being that every time I went to access Gmail/Google Account with my Desktop at home through my browser, I would receive a call or text for the verification code, even when I checked remember my computer.

At this point, simply a PITA but great if you are rarely home, and on the go, and need to access your account through smartphone or public facilities.

Best Free Folder Synchronization Utility 6 years 1 month ago Seb

I tried Allway Sync a few years ago and found that it strewed database files all over my hard disk. As a means of keeping track of files in each folder and helping to manage collisions etc it creates a database of all the files, dates etc and stores this database file in each folder.

At the time I decided I didn't want that so I didn't use the software. I am interested to know if it still works in this way.

Best Free Firewall Protection 7 years 8 months ago securityanalyst

Just an FYI about my experience with PrivateFirewall. I run XP Pro SP3 and installed this app b/c I needed to block an app that I bought from checking for updates. I used it for about a week and it hosed the IP stack. I was able to to fix the stack by using an uninstaller that I use to uninstall PrivateFirewall, and then did a system restore to the point before I installed it. Needless to say, I will not soon use another firewall app. Because like an idiot, I installed it on my production PC. I should have ran it in a sandbox but forgot about it. But I also did want to say that the write-up on this app was stellar, and spot on!! Sometimes of course, this sort of thing will happen. But I do know that the IP stack was healthy before I installed the firewall. Thanks for the great site Gizmo!!

George.J: Thanks for your good work. I like PotPlayer very much, especially the easy to use key controls for playback. But you say under Pros & Cons that 'default 'automatic' video renderer not the best.' For the benefit of those of us who aren't super video geeks, it would be helpful to know what is the best renderer to use?

I'm currently using the instructions from the SVP Wiki [Smooth Video Project] to configure video playback on PotPlayer. I'd appreciate input from those with some video expertise as to whether that is a good way to go? Here's the link to the PotPlayer configuration page on their Wiki, which is more than 2 years old so the configuration pages don't match exactly with the current version:

Agree on all points made by wildweasel, including Web of Trust which I don't bother looking at anymore. It *may* be okay for tech stuff, but gets wildly skewed by trolls on topics where people have strong opinions, e.g. politics, spiritual paths etc. I appreciate the efforts put forth by those reviewing new freeware, but don't want to waste time testing every new program that comes to someone's attention when what I'm already using, e.g. TeamViewer in this case, is as good or better.
I'd suggest including a clear reason[s] in these recommendations why someone might want to switch software.

According to personal experience, the best computer clock synchronization utility and Windows Service is NTP.

In the install program GUI you can choose the time server(s) that will be used for synchronization. You can later update the time server(s) in the ntp.conf file, which is located in the NTP program's ETC folder. You can do the update using Notepad or Notepad++ programs.

You can download NTP install program at the following web page https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/sw/ntp.htm.

Best Free Antivirus Software 7 years 4 months ago sepulchre

Hello,

I've used Avast for years with good results (no viruses - good protection, etc.) but I've become disenchanted with them. Lately, the last year or so, they have become more and more involved with Google. That's okay I suppose except that the last time I updated the program it installed Chrome on my machine without giving me a choice. As far as I'm concerned that's tantamount to being an invasion - the very thing the program is supposed to protect against!

Also, it has become harder and harder to do manual updates. Automatic are fine, until the day you are recording a guitar part and in the middle of the best take there comes a "update successful" voice. Yes, the audio can be turned off but I don't want Anything going on while recording. And it's constantly nagging to turn auto-update on.

That's really why I'm here; to find a different AV that won't become a virus itself like one of the big names did. (Thought I'd never get that off my machine.) So maybe Avira. Guess I'll give that a shot.

view
Best Free Antivirus Software 7 years 4 months ago sepulchre

Okay, after 2 1/2 hours of struggling with Avira I never could get web protection to work. So I went back to Avast. But now they charge for features I used to get for free... I mean I got those features 3 hours ago and now they want to charge.

Oh yeah, and they installed Google Chrome again without even telling me they would much less giving me a choice!

So maybe I'll just have to pay for protection (though until a few hours ago I got the best I ever had for free . . except for the Chrome thing). But you can bet I will NOT get Avast. [Commercial reference removed]

But it really stinks that the guys I used to trust are trying to stick it to me now. I guess Google bought them so the good times are gone.

I've only just started using it myself so I'm not sure I can help further, I just thought I would post about pages 12 & 16 (see also p23) as I had just been reading them in the manual. The manual is 62 pages long so you might find a reason in there why its not working for you.

I'm using PF on Windows 8 pro 64-bit so this is a difference but PF should support XP as well.

If You're Using Windows XP You Need To Read This 6 years 12 months ago severn

Over the years I've prolonged the life of a number of old computers using Linux. Currently I have two laptops still in use that way.

So if you have a very old machine running XP that you don't think has the specs for Windows 7 or 8.1, why not consider that option?

To use an analogy that I guess is meaningful only to UK readers, switching to Linux is a bit like going to Aldi after Tesco: you can get most of what you want but most of the brand names are unfamiliar. If you don't use the machine to run any very specific Windows software, then you can still have all the common uses of a typical computer.

I had some problems switching to Linux Mint, but Ubuntu has never given me any problems.

I'd also add that I have two laptops running Windows 8.1 (they both came with v8) and this is truly dreadful after Windows 7. One had to be completely reinstalled after 6 months. Avoid Windows 8 if you can.

Reclaim Some Of The Disk Space Which Windows Stole 6 years 5 months ago sewerurchin

I don't mean to be rude and I understand that some people are working under severe restrictions. But for the most part, I think that if you are so tight on disk space that you are trying to squeeze out an extra few gigs of storage then you would be better off just upgrading your hard disk or adding another. Disk space is cheap and I doubt that this sort of cleanup is going to have any significant positive effect on the system. Maybe you just like to tweak your system - that's fine. Just my two cents...

Speed Up Your Hearing 6 years 10 months ago Seymour Cat

[quote]"To change the speed you need to select the whole file (represented as wav peaks) and go to Effect > Change Speed…... I dragged the blue cursor up so that I was changing the speed by about 50%. I find that to be a reasonable increase while still being able to understand the words. You could play with the speed to see how fast your file needs to go."

“If you play back your file as is, you’ll find it fairly difficult to understand because of the chipmunk element, it also sounds pretty funny. Go to Effect > Change Pitch…. Drag the blue cursor like for the speed, but this time take it down about 30%. I find with a 50% increase in speed, a 30% decrease in pitch makes the speaker sounds fairly normal.[/quote]

That's not needed. If you select "Effect > Change Tempo" instead of "Effect > Change Speed" you can speed the audio up without changing the pitch of the voices, saving yourself a second round of audio processing to fix the chipmunk element.

Want The Latest Winamp? Get It While You Still Can 7 years 3 months ago Sgluber

This news makes me so sad as I felt when I read about M$ buying Skype, years ago. After, the "end" of MSN...

It's realy a pity to see that so many good and useful softwares, full of pleased users, are being aquired in a moment just for disband competing companies, control of market and accumulation of money. Times later, the "dreams are abandoned" and the softwares are simply throwed in trash by the buyers...

The users and fans? "Let's look to the future!"

A number of companies insist on saying that the users are their biggest patrimony and their number one objective, but, in practice, they make exactly the opposite.

Many times, stay with XP is not just an user choice. Especially in the companies.

I know "thousands" of people who will continue using XP simply because in their jobs XP will continue to be the used OS.

In other words, no matter if people like XP or if people have no choice: the better way is TEACH they to continue using XP with security, regardless of the M$ support.
