I haven't seen anything official from Microsoft about that, but it's been mentioned in several blogs, so I don't know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The shrug is a unicode emoji (U+1F937). As far as I know there's no way to reproduce it easily in
Windows since it makes use of a character on the Japanese keyboard. I've looked high and low for a way to reproduce this in Windows, if you find one, let me know.
You can use an AutoHotKey script or other text expander to insert it, but I just insert it from the clipboard utility I use.
You can copy and paste the one above, or you can find it some places on the internet where you can copy and paste, like this site: https://emojipedia.org/shrug/
Or you can search for shrug emoji. :)

I also recall reading at some point that Win10 would have this feature. None of my Win10 PCs, however, actually have this feature. I have used WizMouse for years for this reason and have always been very pleased.

I use AlwaysMouseWheel for several years now. It didn't let me down... until recently: The last two versions (4.08 & 4.11) don't work in Edge (at least for me). So I stayed with (portable x64) version 4.04 (until that get fixed)

Odd. I did remember it being listed as a Win10 feature, either in the original release or an early update.
And after seeing your article, I checked several windows on my desktop PC and they all scrolled without changing focus and with no additional software.
Also works on my laptop with mouse.
What I'd really like to know is how you do the mouth and the hands in the shrug: \_(" )_/

I'm not sure. I read that it was, but when I uninstalled Wizmouse on my laptop that runs Windows 10 (build 1803) it didn't appear to work even with a reboot. I reinstalled Wizmouse and it works fine. I use a mouse with the laptop. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Isn't this already a built-in feature in Windows 10?

It is similar and I haven't tried it for some years. I've used it and KatMouse before. I ended up staying with WizMouse because there were windows that the other two programs wouldn't activate when scrolled and I had to click to change the focus. That may have changed in the intervening years, I'll have another look at it. :)

Have found that my computer's worst enemy can be me as I do not always understand complicated directions to fix/change things...or think I understand and cause a bit (?) of trouble. Altho I have come quite a ways in understanding I do have quite a ways to go...better to be safe than sorry. As for those first times cleaning the Registry, I did not know about backing things up, so there was a bit of cleanup after myself and thank goodness for those few at the MS Forum who helped me straighten everything out. I think I will stay safe for a few more years and not mess with the Registry...Thanx to you who replied.

Over the years I've heard various knowledgeable people say "don't use a registry cleaner" and "yes it's ok to use a registry cleaner". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's always good to use the backup option in Ccleaner or back up the registry before using another registry cleaner.

I like to use the free version of Resplendence Registrar Registry Manager if I'm making changes in the registry. I'll add that unless you're using a known registry hack that can be undone or know what you're doing it's best not to make any changes in the registry.

view
Windows Registry: What it is, and what you can do with it 7 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

It's a good idea to leave the registry alone if you're not comfortable making changes. It can cause problems. :)

view
Windows Registry: What it is, and what you can do with it 7 months 3 weeks ago gizmofan1248

It's probably a good idea not to let any "registry cleaners" touch your registry database. Years ago they said CCleaner was conservative and safe to use (also regarding the registry cleaning part), contrary to some other registry cleaners that are more aggressive. I have used CCleaner (generally and the registry part) for years without any problems (as far as I know ;-)). In CCleaner there is an option shown before making changes to the registry - to backup your registry. I always use that option now.

view
Windows Registry: What it is, and what you can do with it 7 months 3 weeks ago classicggma65

I have had my hand slapped by the Windows Techs when I allowed my CCleaner to clean the registry. Had not idea what it was or what to do with it so just allowed it to be cleaned...and I deleted a couple things that caused problems in my Win7, my Media Player and IE. Since then I do not clean it and do not touch it. They told me there should be no reason to clean it or change anything in it unless I really Know What I Am Doing. Needless to say, I still am a bit tech challenged and will never attempt to change anything in it. Some of the items listed can be changed elsewhere in your settings. Thanx for the info on exactly what it is and does Rhiannon.

Thanks for this article!
When I opened Gizmo's site, I was met with this message:

"Oops, it looks like you are using an ad blocker.
We work hard to provide you our software news and we keep our ads non-intrusive.
Please support us keeping our content free by disabling your ad blocker."

I'm using ABP - Ad Blocker Plus - for Chrome, but I thought I had deactivated it for Gizmo's site. Well, it was easy to deactivate it (again). You just have to click on the ABP icon, then click on "Trust site". You don't have to disable your ad blocker completely, you can do it just for this site (and other sites which you want to support). Other ad blockers may do it differently, but I believe all have the option of "white-listing" sites.

Get the classic Windows 7 and 8 Calculator in Windows 10 7 months 4 weeks ago Australia

A calculator without brackets ( ) is not very useful imho
Apart from functionality, the key feature of a calculator for me, is large buttons, to prevent eyestrain
No point having a calculator with buttons so small you strain your vision everytime you use it !

During my search for a simple free Windows calculator over many years, I was surprised just how many poorly designed calculators there are
And surprised how few good free calculators there are

My recommendation first appeared in 2014 in TechSupportAlert, in the "Best Free Calculator" section
My preference is 'eCalc', which has two Windows versions, a basic calculator, and also a scientific calculator
Both versions are simple to use, with a good layout, and each can do more than just add, subtract, multiply and divide
Google: eeweb .com tools download

In 2014, I recommended both ECalc and Moffsoft FreeCalc (Google: moffsoft .com freecalc)

Both recommendations were free Windows calculators with noncluttered interfaces, and just as important: clear, LARGE BUTTONS, to protect your vision
As with all my recommendations over many years on TechSupportAlert, I have no affiliation to the recommended freeware

You'll find it as soon as you try it. They only seem to really offer the platinum version now... trial version (no key) only does 5 minutes of video. There may be special circumstances, like for you to do a real review, to get it for free, but the average joe, nope. pay for a license that may die one day as it forces you to upgrade to a version you need a new key for.

I still use a calculator program that doesn't include brackets because it works in RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) in the same way that early Hewlett Packard hand-held calculators worked, back in the 1970s. If you got used to using RPN (not everyone did), it was much more consistent than other manufacturer's systems with brackets.

Clearing history is user-definable but the default settings include cookies and active log-ins so unless the user changes that then I think it's possible that simply opting to not remember history might prevent them being set, or atleast interfere with proper functioning.

LastPass Not Working in Firefox? It's Not Just You 8 months 1 week ago Nodrog

Hi Rhiannon

The LastPass extension sets four cookies, has its own cache and uses a "hidden" cookie-type file under a GUID to store user preferences and probably the trusted device details, so setting the browser to block or remove history and site info would, I think, be bound to interfere wth LastPass functionality.

view
LastPass Not Working in Firefox? It's Not Just You 8 months 1 week ago rhiannon

That's interesting. I have remember history enabled.

I don't have any idea why history would be need to be enabled for LastPass to work. Maybe someone has an idea?

I'm using Firefox 62.0.3 (64 bit) on a Mac laptop running High Sierra. I was getting this same issue where when clicking the Lastpass icon in the top right you should see a menu expand. It was not expanding and only showed a small white box.

I noticed that I had my browsing history set to Never Remember history in Privacy & Security settings. This turned out to be the issue. As soon as I changed to Remember history Firefox asked me to restart. Once Firefox had reopened Lastpass was working fine just like on Chrome.

Has anybody else had this? Why would Lastpass require the browser to remember history for the application to work?

Icecream Screen Recorder 8 months 1 week ago anothersoftwareuser

Their website did not have details i needed, so i emailed and said i wanted to show an action on one monitor with the result on another to show the instant results. Could this program record two monitors? They emailed "Yes", so i bought it. Turns out it records one at a time, and you can't switch midstream, you have to specify which monitor when you start recording. VERY MISLEADING! Although i asked for a refund within a very short time ( less than 24 hours ) and offered to do whatever they needed (including sending a screen shot of my SnagIt registration to show i was using another product ), they replied QUOTE "we reserve the right to decline refund requests if user requests a refund due to absence of features which are NOT in software's features list or description on our official website. " A political answer right up there with the best of them!

Conclusion: buy SnagIt ... way easier to use, AND more powerful, for pretty close to the same price.

Don't Like the MS Office Ribbon? Bring Back Proper Menus. 8 months 1 week ago DonRS

Microsoft seems to think "progress" and "innovation" has been changing the names of functions and moving the icons from a familiar menu to some unintuitive new menu!. The ribbon, truly a new innovation, but was so poorly thought out and "user tested" as to be almost UNUSABLE. What a disaster. After 20 years training their customers to a consistent Menu driven system, they leap to the horrible ribbon to attract new customer, screw the millions of current customers.

The new name they are giving for a RETREAT from the disastrous ribbon, "Fluent Design", is their attempt to disguise they are trying to remedy their terrible mistake, but they are too ARROGANT to admit they made a mistake!

The VP of Office at Microsoft should be looking for another career!

RadioSure
http://www.radiosure.com/
also available from MajorGeeks.

Large database of global stations can be searched, sorted by language, country, genre and title. A Favorites list can be created. If you can find the stream URL for stations you want that are not in the large database, you can add them manually. Several of the available skins have regular and collapsed mini-mode bar-type interfaces which can be always on top or normal operation. There is a record button and the output folder for the capture file is user definable. Can be muted without stopping the stream connection, which makes restarting much faster. This is helpful when switching between another source. Low drain on resources. Does not conflict with other programs. Can be run as a portable program.

This excellent player seems to be more or less abandonware. The last version update was 2013. But as part of my daily W7-SP1 set-up it has been a champ for the last four or five years. (even works well on XP)

÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷

Playlists of radio stations can be created and kept in the Media Library of VLC. This requires, of course that you suss out the stream URL for each station. This can be easy or not, but generally if a station has a live listening page, you can grab it from a link or the page view-source. VLC, while an excellent media player that can render just about anything, is a larger program, requires greater resources and does not have a database of global broadcast and internet stations, but if you have favorites that you need or chose to access through a player it is a good alternative.

Best Free Desktop Search Utility 8 months 2 weeks ago zeocook

The list is too old since 2017, and the desktop search tools list should be updated. Such as TextSeek, Lookeen, etc. new software should be included, those new ones imposes many new features.

TextSeek can perform search character-by-character with no omission, which is quite different from common indexing technology. Its UI is most like to Google Desktop Search tool, and render results like Google.

Lookeen can perform email content search and support common Mail System like Outlook.

How to get rid of the volume pop-up display in Windows 8.1 and 10 8 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

It's present on Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. It doesn't happen on all systems. It showed up here a few weeks ago. I'd never seen it before. I hadn't made any software changes or changes to Windows, and no recent updates. Strange. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Google is forcefully signing users into Chrome 8 months 3 weeks ago Australia

Thanks Rhiannon for all your work informing us about how to avoid being spied upon.
One of the most worrying aspects of computing for some, has always been how Google wants to review everyones internet browsing, and push targeted advertisements. The extension of this, as we all know now, is brainwashing by the pushing of distorted news items and political influencing.

Anyway, many do use Google for their searches, yet there is hopefully an option of not signing in to a Google account
The search results in Google, are often better than those of DuckDuckGo (which doesnt spy)
Wonder if Google still spies on users without a Google account, through their IP address. Probably.

Please continue to advise us how to avoid being spied upon.
To everyone. NEVER use an internet browser that forces you to log onto it to use
Such privacy breaching behaviour is UNACCEPTABLE in 2018

We are now in the era of cyber crine and identity theft. How can large IT companies be so blase with our privacy, its just staggering
