How to Report Malware or False Positives to Multiple Antivirus Vendors 6 years 1 month ago yvonniewu

Hi Chiron,

Roboscan/AlYac Internet Security has a report form for users to report malware of false positives.
Check the link here from Roboscan's website: http://www.roboscan.com/support/virus_report.aspx

If you're currently using Rooscan or has Roboscan installed in your PC regardless lifetime free version or paid Pro version, there is a "report" function available on on the lower left the configuration.

Site Suggestions and Feedback 4 years 8 months ago yyyy

Hello, Thanks for all the hard work. But,... I'd like something more.
I like pages like this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_computer-aided_design_editors
I can make my own religion based on the features listed. I'd love to see more tables of that type when reading from Gizmo's. Sometimes, features that look important to the editor might be pointless to me, or the opposite.
It also would be nice to be able to fill in that type of table collaboratively.

Want To Learn Hacking? Hacking For Dummies Book Is Free 2 years 6 months ago zachw

Just downloaded. It's more of a general overview book with very little specific hacking information. Searched for "sql injection" and there were two matches with no explanation of what it even is much less an example! Mentions in one sentence that you can encrypt your messages with PGP (which almost nobody uses these days). A very short paragraph on honeypot, but zero info on setting one up, just a reference to google hack honeypot. Indeed, the entire book seems to be mostly a reference for software tools. Just reconfirmed my low opinion of the whole "For Dummies" genre.

The Best Photo Viewer I've Seen In Years. And It's Free. 5 years 2 months ago ZacWalk

I am one of the developers of Diffractor. There is just two of us and we are only volunteers. We both have day jobs. This is a hard review to live up to but we will do our best.

Gizmo readers have been amazing and provided a lot of great feedback. If you find bugs or have suggestions please help us to make Diffractor better by reporting them at http://www.diffractor.com/help

It is expensive to run such a project and the sponsor payments are far from covering our costs. Custom indexed of folders are the only feature that is limited; 99.9% of our active users are using it for free. We have to reward supports somehow.

Diffractor is designed to take advantage of your graphics card. There are a lot of different hardware and drivers out there. We try to support as much as possible including all sorts of old Windows XP hardware. If you see problems please give us details.

There are a lot of great venerable image viewers out there. We have nothing against any of them...use what makes you happy :)

Best Free Digital Image Viewer 5 years 3 months ago zdub

I've tried most of these over the years. For a long term irfanview was IT. Then switched over to xnview. But for the last couple of years I've migrated to Zoner almost exclusively. And very frequently. It's a great photo/image manager. (I rarely use the editor in favor of more dedicated programs.)

However, I'm currently at version 14 Build 5 from 2012. The latest is version 16 something but I hesitate to update because of some horror stories regarding the latest version "hijacking" of image registry settings, and other intrusive behavior.

It's impossible to find version history on this product.

So what's the deal? Is there an advantage to v16? Is it as intrusive as some folks say? I hate being a guinea pig if I was so warned...

view

Thank you for such a detailed response. It's sometimes hard to separate the horror stories of inexperienced users who blindly click Next during an install and suffer the consequences of crapware (especially, as you noted, when using cnet packages) versus truly intrusive behavior.

Based on your experience, I'll give the latest version a go!

Yeah, me three. Been using Avast for years on a number of computers and nothing extra has ever been installed by itself. The popups are slightly annoying but are occasional and no real biggie. The only thing you have to watch out for, besides the Chrome install option (and even that didn't show when I installed it yesterday via ninite.com) is that during upgrades it's easy to click install for the paid version.

While it's not usually THE top AV solution in the various AV comparisons, it is usually ranks near the top, and has a reasonable memory footprint.

Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program 6 years 5 months ago zdub

Just updated Freemake to 4.0.0.1. I didn't see any OpenCandy stuff bundled with it. However, they have now disabled drag & drop from the initial screen and instead have replaced it with a big button to get you to install Gold Pack by either donating or changing your Home Page/Search options in your browser. After doing a conversion, you can drag & drop (as long as you don't close the converted files info, in which case the screen reverts back to the Gold Pack install button.)

Quick followup. Looks like the main screen gets rotated a bit; sometimes it's a bit annoying, but I guess the authors have to monetize it somehow. Overall I'm quick happy with this options & the ease of use for this program. For a more sophisticated converter, folks should try MediaCoder. The number of conversion options can be daunting, but there is a large support community,

The Best Photo Viewer I've Seen In Years. And It's Free. 5 years 2 months ago zdub

I tried it and it does look pretty cool. However it must be classified as crippleware since certain important features are disabled unless you sponsor it for 10 bucks. Nothing against this in principle, but since I can't find any compelling reason why I should use it instead of (or in addition to) my current fav, Zoner. Fast? Yeah, but I haven't found speed to be an issue in ANY of the popular photo viewers; they are all pretty much instant. Metadata support & search? Zoner does it. Editor? Zoner is MUCH more capable. Audio & video support? I really don't care about this in a photo viewer, but again, Zoner does it.

So I'll pass.

CryptoLocker Encryption Cracked. How To Get Your Files Back. 5 years 6 days ago zdub

No, that's not the end of it. FireEye and others got lucky in that they were able to grab a copy of the cryptolocker database.

Look at CryptoLocker as V1 of a "product" that's only going to get better and better, both in the delivery techniques (which will likely continue to rely on social engineering) and in the encryption process. Decryption (without the DB) is all but impossible without quantum computing, and will become even more "impossibler" with longer keys.

There are enough people with inadequate controls and inadequate backups to keep these crime syndicates rolling in dough for a long time to come...

view
CryptoLocker Encryption Cracked. How To Get Your Files Back. 5 years 5 days ago zdub

If your backup drive is sitting next to your computer it is sufficient if the primary computer HD crashes or has an unrecoverable virus. But it certainly ain't good enough for disasters such as fires. External backups are fine if combined with an offsite plan, but most people don't do this. That's one major advantage of cloud backup

If you actually DO open up 100 tabs (!) you'll have a hell of a time figuring out how much memory Chrome actually uses since each tab is a separate process. It does use more RAM than FF but releases it more quickly when closing a tab.

That being said, Firefox is no memory lightweight either and has long suffered from memory fragmentation. Here's an interesting site that has monitored FF memory usage over the years https://areweslimyet.com/

The problem occurs because some companies install executables in the user's AppData directory. Google update even does this. Is Moving From Windows to Linux The Right Choice For You? 4 years 6 months ago Zebedeeboss

I have to agree with Jorpho on this one. I have distro hopped for the last 2-3 years trying to find the right "Linux" that just worked.

Quote "Speed. In general, most Linux systems run many times faster than Windows."

This is the single statment that got me to write a reply. In my findings this is so NOT true. Yes Linux works, and now days it works generally well. Day to day use it is no quicker than a typical windows 7 setup on an average i5 machine.

Now this is just a view point - I have no proof of timings or fabulous screen shots of "Top" etc showing use of resources etc. Why? Because I dont care. I am not one of those who tweaks and fixes and tunes to get my machine to run using just 384k or some other arbituary low figure. i5 with 6gm Ram... what do I care if my machine uses 5.7Gb as long as it works and works well. If it starts to "lag" I usually say - ok what don't I realy need running and start to close things down and this happens more often with Linux than it does Windows. In my experience.

I too leave my machine on 24/7 so not fussed about start up times. I just want to be able to work/play - do multiple things at the same time and not spend hours on a forum trying to find a fix for something that gets broken when an update occurs.

For me... Windows 7 just simply works. It does everything I want. That said - I am a glutton for punishment and I love "playing" with Linux to see if I can conquer it. and conquer is the apt word (sorry couldn't resist that one). I have to fight - tweak - configure - groan - start again - until I get Linux the way I like it.... then BANG!!!! it all goes pear shaped after an update... Sigh!!!

If you simply want a machine to go on the internet and surf Facebook etc - do e-mails and a few documents then Linux can work for you. There are now some truly lovely Distros out there.

But when I need to do something and and do it NOW... I reboot to windows. OK rant over. Its a good informative article (if a little biased). A good example of why I always refer people To Gizmo's site. With the comments section you get to hear for and against, presented in a professional manner to allow you to make your own mind up. Keep up the Great work.
ps scuse typo's and gramatically incorrect punctuations etc :)

Is Moving From Windows to Linux The Right Choice For You? 4 years 6 months ago Zebedeeboss

@eikelein

These are purely my choice as the ones that gave me least trouble installing and configuring to my needs. The fact that they needed minimal configuration make them my current working installed favourites.

In no particular order - Voyager - LXLE - PeachOSI - Netrunner - Mint 17.1 KDE.

Harder to set up (for me) but still work well - Manjaro - Salix

I am more familiar with Debian/Ubuntu based systems as I have "played" with them more. I emphasise the word play as I am just a pc user and by no means an IT Guru.

After using Freemake for quite some time, and being pleased with the results, I finally consented to an update that they had been nag screening about for months. Big Mistake. Along with the update came a vicious piece of malware/adware
called "Express Find". It caused a black rectangle to appear at the bottom center of my (FF) browser screen which protruded about 2" from bottom and about 4"wide. There was an "X" in upper right hand corner but it did not close the rectangle. When clicked it redirected my browser to some very shabby websites. (per WOT) . Got rid of it by running avast scan which picked it up and deleted it. Beware

Update:

Just ran an MBAM scan. It found and quarantined 15 items classified as "PUP's" all connected to "Express Find" although previous to this scan browser appeared to be running cleanly.

Create Random Files For Disk And Internet Testing 4 years 5 months ago zep321

Hi Rob,

Downloaded the portable (no installer) version of this app.
Unzipped and attempted to execute. Avast blocked execution and gave
me a message that the file was infected with "DS#DynaGen||algo:"
MBAM however gave it clean bill of health.

What do you think?

Thanks,MC

Guess it was a false positive. Puzzling, but it looks safe based on other sources cited.

Thanks George.

That sounds rather benign but why would Avast actually block execution of the program and yet give it a clean bill of health per the virus total website? My question is, of course , rhetorical , but it's still a puzzle to me.

How to Get Your Previous System Back After You Have Upgraded to Windows 10 4 years 2 weeks ago zep321

If you pass the 30 day limit to revert and wish to downgrade back to win 7 can I use my system image of 7 made just before upgrade? If so
do I use the win 7 or 10 recovery usb or can it be done after booting into win 10?

Best VPN Services for 2019 2 years 11 months ago zep321

Hey WykydWytch:

thanks for the tip re AirVpn. I had recently purchased a one month sub to ExpressVPN. Express works very well for me but is a little pricey($100 Yr vs $60 for Air). Both perform equally well as my main concern(besides privacy, of course) is download speed as I do a lot of bittorrent downloads. I will keep using both this month but probably decide on Air.
Express is a little more user friendly but I think I'd rather save the $40 per year.
Thanks again,

No mention anywhere of IP Vanish, After trying a handful of VPN's (Both paid & free), settled on IPVanish. It did not reduce my download sped and has been utterly reliable. It's about $80 a year (paid annually).

Any one else out there tried it?

This Second-Opinion Malware Scanner Is Free Now 3 years 5 months ago zep321

Signed up for the 30 day free trial. Very impressed wiih this software, Using it on 2 desktops with win 10 home 64 bit.
This program detects tracking cookies where mbam displays or deletes all cookies unless you go through a laborious sorting process
or uncheck the "cookie" box for each browser.
Is there any other freeware that isolates the tracking cookies for removal?

Tails. For The Ultimate In Online Privacy. 3 years 4 weeks ago zep321

I want to give this a try. I'm a little confused about the process. Can I just burn this file directly to my flash drive without using a program such as "Rufus" to create a bootable drive? That seems to be the implication. Thanks in advance for any help

Tails 3.5 Released. The Ultimate Free OS For Privacy. 1 year 6 months ago zep321

Rob:
Great little O/S, thanks.
Here's what happened with me. Downloaded Tails ,created bootable USB as instructed. I have 3 computers, all Acer . 2 desktop,1 laptop.
Attempted to boot Tails to my laptop ,got security lockout because the BIOS is UEFI. One of my desktop PC's is older with legacy BIOS,
Booted with no problem.
Changed my laptop BIOS to Legacy and I couldn't even boot to internal Windows 10. I fixed that problem but Tails will not boot to my PC's with UEFI BIOS.
What do you guys think?

Very Realistic Oil And Watercolour Paint App. Free From Microsoft. 1 year 6 months ago zep321

I haven't tried this yet but I've been using an app called "FotoSketcher" This app is very versatile and produces dozens of special effects applied to photos,
Also is only an 8mb download vs 124mb for "Fresh Paint".
